Yes, this performance has become a classic on its own. Here, Angelina, at 9 yrs 2 mos old, has captured the essence of the original song by Screamin' Jay Hawkins in 1956 in her arrangement. In the intro you can see her writing out and passing last-minute changes to the arrangement to a member of the band. They may have gone in that day and been taken aback by playing for a nine-year-old, but by the end of the day they were calling her, "The Boss." After auditioning for Norway's Got Talent at seven and winning it at eight, she was literally a professional by age 9! Now, at fifteen, she has written 5 songs, sung two written for her, and covered about 135 other songs of 70 different artists. She is signed to Republic Records as a highest priority new artist. Her recent releases of originals and covers are beyond superlative. Angie's musical abilities are beyond mere mortal understanding! She is the real deal.

The paper is her 'wishes' for the band. She always arranges her own vocals. You can't teach that!

As to the note she gave to the director. Rusty shackelford (sp) believes it to be changes to the piano. Though she followed the lyrics she positioned the words and arranged the instruments. She had just turned nine when this was produced so it can be assumed she was probably still eight when contemplated. One day a biographer may be able to tell us. She is truly historical. One day her history and music will be taught at universities music schools across the world. You and untold others are witnessing history being made. The only human I know of who has a chronological record from the cradle for all to see.

The clarity and purity of her voice always shines through. In everything she sings. A couple of other notes to add to your terrific comments are: While the band had the spotlight you can see Angelina looking over to see if everything was what she expected. And, at the end, she raised her arm up and laid it on a ledge, with no smile visible, seeming going over the production to herself. Indeed, she was a master at the age of 9, for sure.
PS They probably had to cut one of the sessions short because Angelina had to go home and study for her 4th grade arithmetic test. OMG! Yes, OMG!
    Thanks, see you soon.

Yup she is arranging this song and paying Homage to Screaming Jay Hawkings. She started singing at 18 months of age. Her 1st studio session was at 6yrs and you can google it She was sing I Who Have Nothing. She gave her shoes to a poor girl and vowed never to wear shoes until every child has shoes. She wrote a book and is the youngest author in Noway. She won Norways Got Talent with her songs by Holiday and the such. Summer time is wonderful oh there are so many covers and she writes her own songs. 7th Heaven is on and is wonderful just like she is.

Some additional context: Angelina is the youngest Norwegian citizen to have written a book and have it published. She was nine years old when her book was published. She also wrote four songs and recorded them by the time she was twelve years old. She was six years old when she experienced her first studio recording session. What makes this session so astonishing was seeing her reading the advanced level lyrics, in English, while she was singing.
Several of her videos show Angelina reading the lyrics from her ipad as she is singing.

The final section is a tribute to the fact that Screaming Jay Hawkins was a trained opera singer. "Watch out!" is an imperative phrasal verb. Those four "I love you"s, which to me are the centre of the song, are carefully timed (not equidistant) and does not expect a response. I'd hate to be on the other end of that! This is indeed powerful magic.

You have a new subscriber, but BEWARE! This is a long comment. I hope you have the patience to read to the end. From your remarks, I gather you are already aware of Angelina and have now decided to react to her videos. Congratulations and thank you for doing so. It is a decision you will never regret, and her fans will be delighted.
As you know, she was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, an American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody.
As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured. She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener.
In this video, you did you notice that Angelina finishing some notes and handing them to the pianist, who smiled as he read them? They were her wishes (instructions) to the band how she wished therm to play the music. There was then a brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, a well known and respected Iranian artist, who is also Angelina's maternal grandmother and the person who encouraged Angelina in her love of music, especially jazz. You recognised the features of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on the candle Angelina was holding. But, did you notice how the "performing" Angelina, singing at a level of maturity far beyond her years, suddenly became a 9-year-old child almost instantaneously once she finished singing. From the time I first heard Angelina, way back at her first audition on Norway's Got Talent, she has amazed me.
My introduction to Angelina was on her first appearance at Norway's Got Talent and I didn't expect much from a 7-year-old. Just a cute little girl, all nervous, rushing the song in parts, hesitating and then stumbling over or forgetting her words and generally acting her age and doing her best to get through a childish song like "Twinkle, twinkle little star". Well, it was a seven-year-old child who appeared on the stage. She was small and had wild hair and gaps in her mouth, where there once were baby teeth. My first surprise was how she confidently answered questions put to her by one of the judges. She showed no signs of nerves and when she was asked what song she was going to perform, she declared she was going to sing a song by the legendary Billie Holiday. Then she gestured off-stage for the technician to start the music and started singing. Yeah! The body of the 7-year-old child was still there, but the voice wasn't. It was that of a 40-50 year old black woman who had been singing for decades. That first moment of surprise has been experienced many times since then.
I have followed her career since I saw that first video on RUclips and in the years she has been singing publicly she has mastered many musical genres, including Blues, Country, Disco, Jazz, Pop, R&B and Soul, EDM and Rock and covered songs first performed by many famous singers, like Adele, Whitney Houston, Nancy and Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Lana del Ray, Avicii, Bill Withers, Gloria Gaynor, Andy Williams, Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong and many others: in total over 120 different songs and 82 different performers. She takes ownership of every song she sings while still paying respect to the original. She never goes into unnecessary theatrics. Never sings those high or low notes unless they are absolutely necessary. Never projects herself in any performance which says "look how good I am". She just sings the song as she feels it is meant to be sung. She has the innate ability not only to sing a song as emotionally as the song deserves, but to be able to communicate those same emotions to the listener. When you listen to her, there is the feeling that you are the object of her attention. She is singing for you alone.
I have listened to every interview she has given and every documentary about her and every performance she has ever given. What I will never understand is how a very shy and humble girl in her normal life, can be transformed into the perfect vehicle for the song she has chosen to sing, once she starts to sing.
Although the gift of singing and all her performances appear to be effortless, Angelina works very hard to ensure that the one she is going to record reflects what she sees as the correct way to meld both lyrics and melody. If you go to ruclips.net/channel/UChM_lpT4shdnsez93QMJPig you will find many rehearsals where, not only do you get to see her rehearsing but being the "ordinary" girl she is (if indeed one is able to apply that adjective to her). Most of her performances are recorded in her home studio, either with backing music or a single guitar. Most are done in one take. She treats the whole thing as a hobby. As we would have said when I was young. "There is no 'side' to her" She is completely transparent to the world.
Perhaps you would like to go back a few years and work forward. By doing so, you will come to the realisation that she is "unique" and I don't use that word loosely. There is truly no other singer who has her versatility and sheer ability to communicate the emotions of a song to her listeners. I doubt there is another singer who works so hard to ensure that, when she sings the song, it is sung in such a way that her listener becomes enmeshed in the emotions

Angelina resurrected this long-forgotten song. She brought it back to life after the many dull interpretations following Nina Simone's version. Broken somewhat by Creedence Clearwater Revival in the late '60s or early 70's. This is the best version of "I put a spell on you", better even than the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins' interpretation which I personally found ridiculous really with that voodoo style. This is just my personal opinion.

Yes she did arrange it, also when she says,” hey hey hey watch out” she’s the one that told the musicians to put that little trumpet blast at the end of her “watch out” to give it a little more kick or feeling.

Angelina's work effort makes this appear easy, her talent and musicality makes it look like magic. It is neither. What it is is a masterpiece where she repackages all of the crazy in Hawkin's original (including many of his vocal embellishments) into an updated one-of-a-kind jazz performance of the highest order.

    • @krissysteel1

Music is magical. No doubt. In that it's totalety of a song always equal more than each part. The magic that appears between the notes, in in the pauses of the rhythm. Music is actually magic, when done properly that is. Not to mention how Music, (when done properly,) convey emotions. It's not about the sound per se. It's all about emotion.

I consider AJ's version to be far more like Hawkins' original composition - this is how the composer would have played it those first times. He certainly didn't compose the song as he performed it in those later years - he had to be envisioning something closer to AJ's version... he just didn't have her vocal tools.

To me, Angelina has the ability to 'smooth the edges' of anything she sings. There's a version of this that Jay sang in later years that's very close to this one but this just seems 'smoother' for lack of a better descriptor. She kept the original but blended a bit of Nina Simone's version and even smoothed it out more. I saw a comment once that said Angelina sings in 'verbal cursive'. I'm beginning to believe they're onto something. Lol!

Angelina is one of the most addictive singers I have ever listened to, & one of the very few, that can pull you right into the song, making you feel, every word, every note, & every emotion. ❤️💙 I always have this feeling that Angelina is not only channeling some of these late great singers, but that they also pass through her, when she is singing their song ❤️💙 A rare beauty, in every sense of the word ❤️💙 Whether you are a believer in reincarnation or not, I find it very intriguing that Lou Rawls, the American Jazz & blues singer legend, passed away only a few days before Angelina was born 😊 Loved your

I appreciate the honesty in "confessing" that you have watched the video several times. Fake reactions are easy to spot. Some people will "perform" during their reaction.

I’ve screen shot this and contrasted it and it’s the order of words. Jay Hawkins played with this song overtime, adding and taking. He’s the only one I’ve heard say, hey hey hey watch out. He didn’t have the little brass backup on it though. He also has that bit she does at the end, but I don’t think it was at the end, and not with the dramatic pause or phrased quite the same. It’s Hawkins and not Hawkins.

David it's logical that she works with the musicians or the musician, in preparing her versions of the songs she chooses, (even if the testimonies of her guitarists say that the choice and the way to perform it is essentially her, they follow), but sincerely I very much doubt that any arranger could convince a 9 year old girl to be so inclusive and persuasive in singing a song like this, it can only work if the same vision of how to arrange it's part of her creative process, otherwise she might not be so perfect in execution. 🤗
Furthermore, I find it incredible to say the least that such alternative versions of the songs she covers, are made by other arrangers and created just for Angelina, after decades of replicas of the same songs by the greatest performers. I think this is only possible if she collaborate with fantastic arrangers who are very shy and who come out only with her ... ❤️ 😂
