These books were insane. I remember my kindergarten teacher read the book to us and everyone lost their mind when David striped.
I got it read to me in first grade and I remember it so vividly everyone erupted into giggles and lost their absolute minds

Around 2009-2010 the author came to my school and read a few of the books to us. He ended the visit by drawing a giant sketch of David, which would then be framed by my school and hung in our library. I’m in college now but I wouldn’t be surprised if my elementary school still has it hanging up
Choopo, have you ever heard of Liberty's Kids? It was some animated PBS Kids show that depicted the American Revolution where we followed a few OC's who never aged and managed to come across almost every major historical person who was in America at the time.
It's one of those shows a lot of people remeber watching in school or something but its left peoples minds since then waiting to be reminded by some rando on the internet.

I hated David not bc of the content in the book but because of the art style I thought it was so nasty and it scared me 😭😭

jokes aside, i'd forgotten how genuinely unsettling the art in these books was to me, probably explains why i never touched them as a kid. especially Stripes, visually impressive and delightful as an adult, terrifying as a child.
Back in 2008, when I was but a youngster, I visited a book signing where David Shannon shared his new book "Too Many Toys". For some reason he had us kids in the audience collectively design a new toy. Well, when it was my turn, I chose what was obviously the best thing to come out of 2008, and said our exquisite corpse should have "a WALL-E arm". Oh, how WALL-E consumed my life that year. But David, in perhaps his most heinous act beyond those of all the books, claimed that "some people might not know what that is" and went with "a robot arm" instead. How could he? How could any child in 2008 not know WALL-E? Even the literal baby who was there would have known.
This immediately soured my opinion of David and his books, and after that I was no longer fond of them as bedtime reading. For _shame,_ David. For shame.

What makes it scarier its that, despite being realistic, theyre still as pitch black as in his stickman form. So what kind of strange creature is Choopo in reality? We may never know and perphaps we are better off that way.

I swear every time the kindergarten teacher would pull this book out I would feel an impending sense of dread, wondering what horror and chaos this boy would do in every new book.
This brought back memories I unknowingly suppresed. I remember how David creeped me out and you know what... He still gives me chills with his souless eyes and sharp teeth

I'm not sure when I read these books, maybe early 2000s or 2010 but I recall a storybook about a kid being super scared of his teachers, I remember there was a gym teacher one as well. At the end, he realizes that they're actually people and are super nice. The art style was sharp, it had somewhat dull colors, and also had some interesting looking monster designs ( again I don't remember at all, this could be wrong) and there were spinoffs too.
This video reminded me of that series alongside a fly guy book and Magic Treehouse Series (which would be a banger video).
Maybe it's the Black Lagoon series? I remember the title format being "The Teacher from the Black Lagoon" and so on. Weirdly enough, your mention of Fly Guy reminded me of the series because I always thought there was something similar between the two art styles.
You're right@@moss-upon-a-rock2836 I did have to put "Black Lagoon -manga" but it's there. It's "Black Lagoon Adventures" and the author is Mike Thaler and is illustrated by Jared Lee (which has been a series where an old lady swallowed things whole???)

the most surprising thing in this video is that David from bfdi was included on the list of David
When this guy started talking about being wary of Davids in general, I immediately thought BFDI David and was so very pleasantly surprised to see he made it into this video.
Other than that, I only had one David book as a kid and even them, knew how much of a gremlin he was and tried not to act like him (especially after seeing him tip a fishbowl). On the bright side, I really did enjoy the art style of the books, very colorful.
