    My wife, and her sister are mirror image twins. My wife has been vegan for 26 years. Her sister has eaten the standard american diet during that time. The difference between their health, and physical condition is very dramatic. My wife is still slender, and very active. Her sister is over weight, has lost height, has lost mobility. Numerous health issues. Neither of them have ever smoked, or drank. Considering that 37 years ago when we got married the two girls looked so identical. Today they barely look like sisters. Diet sure make a huge difference over time.

      @courag1 4 года назад +58

      Complex Carbivorous I can certainly see where the twin who was vegan 26 years would love to be on the podcast. But the question is what would motivate her twin-Standard-American-Diet, want to have a session of "true confessions". She can look at her twin sister and should have seen the difference for years and she did not change her lifestyle. Obviously she is in denial, she is probably addicted to cheese -- and parading her failure in front of the world does not seem likely.
      Even posting the image of the overweight twin might be problematic legally. In the end unless the overweight twin came to one accord with her sister, it would create such family problems and hard feelings which no amount of "gee, I'm sorry", will make up for. The Vegan twin would of course want her sister to solve her health issues but the one who is not on board is highly unlikely to reveal her lifestyle caused the problem.

      @@courag1 You nailed the situation perfectly. My wife's sister has always been the type to be in denial. She make excuses for all her problems. It’s not something anyone can change. Obviously her sister is very aware of their physical differences and how similar they used to be. Sometimes the less said the better and she might reach out to her and consider being vegan one day. My twin sister and I are fraternal twins so it’s not the same but she has had health issues on keto and I went vegan. I don’t want to fracture our relationship by trying to convince her any more because she is convinced she is doing the right thing and that I am not. I do worry about her.

    • @micahgourley7984
      @micahgourley7984 2 года назад +22

      Me too, we should find multiple identical twins willing to do this, as it would be highly intriguing. Going from the SAD diet of highly inflammatory veg. oils, fried foods, and processed foods etc. is definitely going to be a step up to anything else, but what is most viable and doable long-term, and without needed supplementing? And what intrigues me a lot is that we do have data from millennia ago in the form of paleopathology (studying ancient tooth remains, etc.), which is basically CSI-ing which diets potentially caused one civilization to live longer than the others, and I found it very intriguing that the ancient Egyptians had gynaecomastia and heart disease and ate a high-grain diet. That's not to say that all plants are bad, but we should follow and test such findings.
      I've heard multiple former long-term vegans say they quit because they started to get cavities and tooth erosion, for example, so I'm curious on that front as to why it's so, and other variables on how other vegans make up for that. To its benefit, veganism definitely is great for those wanting gut distension from all of the fiber, as Dr. Greger has pointed out, citing how it's mostly undigestible fiber that brings satiety, but what about long-term issues? With that said, I realize many vegans have reasons beyond paleopathology and have dearly held convictions, which I respect, and am happy for someone if it works for them, because after all, aren't we all in pursuit of the same thing in wanting to see people live healthy, prosperous lives? (Just thought I should add that in case I sound like a snarky know-it-all lol) :-)

      I think that to see the efficacy you are talking about, you would need to test a set of triplets: one on a plant-based diet, one on a SAD and one on a carnivorous diet. Because the bottom line is that the SAD or standard way of eating in the west is the problem: full of saturated fats, full of sugar, full of random crap and fairly low in variety and fresh goods. If you are suggesting that a meat-only diet would be healthier, I think you would also need to compare it to a PB diet to see the implications going either way. There are also so many variables: are the vegan products organic? locally grown? seasonal? Avocados, tropical fruit and plants flown in from around the world? What meat is it? Something free of hormones, reared in a humane way? Is it local to the region or flown in from somewhere to give the meat eater more variety?
      A lot to consider.

      If the other twin could lift as much, and had more energy than his twin during and after sessions, why does it matter if he gained less muscle? Strength and size, while they have some relation, are not necessarily directly proportional. And muscle and health are definitely not proportionate. There is a long list of body builders that have died young and were muscle bound way beyond the norm. Muscle doesn't = health, though of course it is good to have functional muscle.
      If all one cares about is looking big/getting swole, yeah, eat your meat heavy diet and/or juice, but for me, health is a priority. I don't eat vegan btw. While my diet is mostly plant based, I incorporate a little bit sardines, egg yolks, low fat yogurt, etc.

      Some ppl dont produce the enzymes to make vitamin k2 and other nutrients that are nearly impossible to get in a vegan diet meaning large portions of our ancestors definitely ate animal products or they could not of survived so our ancestors were without a doubt omnivores.

      Sugar is the natural compound found in fruit. It is not "poison" it is made out to be. Getting yourself some extra sugar is comparable to finding a very ripe nice fruit in a natural setting, and there is a good reason our bodies crave it and even get addicted to it (they don't really crave fat that much, as far as I can tell).
      The evolved way for our body to function is to stuff itself full of sugary fruit while it is available, perhaps gain some body fat in the process, and then lose it again when winter, the time of starvation and suffering comes (gather some nuts in advance so you can outlast it).

I am 125 lbs. I would like to just vegan or maybe just do vegan part of the week. I do eat smaller portions. I never get sick anymore. Before every year I had infections: lungs, sinuses and ear. THe guy on the meat diet ate sugar and drink coffee, that is where his highs and lows came from. secondly I went on a keto diet and felt a whole lot better. No highs and lows and felt good all day long (I am almost 74 years old). My body does not like or process a lot of plants, I get stomach cramps and surprises. On the keto diet my stomach has been calm and everything running smooth. I was on a microbiotic diet years ago in my early 40's, because of stomach problems, but the diet was mostly rice and soy not vegetables. It did cure what I had at the time but after about 2 years I started to return to my old diet, after about 5 years I was completely off of it, and did very well, there was absolutely no kind of sweets on this microbiotic diet and that included honey. I have more problems with grains and legumes and vegetables. Different kinds of lettuce and spinach I do well on and can even eat celery but most everything else must be cooked well and even then my stomach may complain. I think that there is not a diet that fits everyone. These young men were not working a hard job day in and day out like being a lumber jack. Being in a gym is a whole lot different than the real world where you may be sweating profusely and fighting off bugs and danger and really using your body in all kinds of angles. This vegan thing started with the eastern religion and most of them live where it is very hot and humid, and a meat diet could be way to hot. If they lived where there is constant cold and not a whole lot of time to grown all those veggies like the arctic, and did not live in a controlled modern environment, your body would have different needs. The Bibles says all things are good to eat, for it goes thru the body into the latrine, but it is what comes out of you mouth that can be deadly, because that comes from the heart. I am not a Hindu, which have millions of gods, so I will follow my body and my genetics and of coarse the good Lord . The real key is is not to eat all the junk food we are being fed in the groceries stores and fast food places and also not to eat ten tons of sugar. We are hunter gathers and can eat a variety of things that nature provides , it is in man processing the foods where it becomes adulterated and is not recognized by our bodies and so our bodies reacts to it. Such as the way they process milk products, homogenized milk is the worst thing you can drink, drink raw milk because the body can recognize it. These young men need to redo their test and the meat diet should not contain sugars and coffee. I did not hear the other guy saying he was eating sugar and drinking coffee. Please do not forget that all those vegans who think they are doing good ,will be cutting down more forest and killing more natural environment and using way more water in order to grow all those veggies. Everything should be in balance, not too much one way and not too much the other way. People are too far removed from nature and do not understand how it works. There is a reason why some animals eat meat and some eat vegetation and some do both (like us). Reading books cannot tell you how nature works you have to be in it and I don't mean with you big camper and with all those conveniences. Listen to your own body, it is a product of millions of years of genetics. If you eat sh** that is what your body will turn into. If you eat what God made for us to eat without it being adulterated , you will be fine. Don't follow trends. Think about what you are doing and what kind of impact it could have on other living creatures who share this world with us. Get the facts not the fads.

      There are no important nutrients, which you cant get on a plant-based diet. F.e. supplementing Vitamin B12, which is made by bacteria, is recommended. (we live in a steril world) Though omnivores can have a deficiency for various reasons too btw.. Also you should take Vitamin D depending on where you live, because it mainly comes through the sun.(f.e. during the winter) Therefore it applies for everyone.

    Lots of the language used by the twins suggests that the psychological element would be:
    Vegan = placebo
    Control = nocebo
    The interviewer’s questions aligned with expectations that the vegan diet would be superior and the twins clearly primed with media that focused on performance benefits of a plant-based diet. As a plant-based athlete myself, I am sympathetic with this, but from the perspective of generating evidence for either diet it is garbage. Placebo/nocebo effects swamp most treatments in sports nutrition because of the powerful influence of confidence and stress in athletic adaptation.

    If diet is strictly the only thing you're looking at, veganism is the healthiest period. It's already been scientifically proven. That doesn't mean however, that you can't lead a generally healthy lifestyle consuming meat, so long as your diet is balanced with whole foods and sugar/processed foods are limited or cut completely and you don't have significant health issues/dietary restrictions. This video missed a huge opportunity to compare two balanced diets with one containing meat and the other being strictly vegan. Comparing tests between the two, as well as before and after pics would've been largely helpful. If there's a way to make that happen with a set of twins, I think that would be incredibly insightful for more people.

    Now you both can go and get blood tests done specifically checking all interleukin inflammatory markers, Lp-PLA2, HS-CRP, TNF-Alpha, OxLDL, MPO, CardioIQ Panel, CBC, and CMP for starters. I bet any money that the plant based diet will show significant better blood test results vs the meat diet. How do I know? Because I'm a health professional with nearly 27 years in the business with a specialty in functional medicine and I've seen countless blood test results from meat eaters and plant based dieters and plant based always comes out on top! Not trying to debate because I do eat meat myself, but I just limit red meat. What I state is fact based on my own experience and if you want to debate because you grill a ton of red meat then go do the blood tests I have outlined, especially if you are over 40 and you will see for yourself. Younger guys under 40 can get away with eating rocks if they want, but as you get older the body starts to break down and health problems arise starting with hidden inflammation and then symptoms, and then disease. Catch it early by doing the blood tests I mentioned because only 2% of physicians will check what I have outlined and most people won't do anything until symptoms appear or they have a heart attack and by that time it could be too late. Good luck!

    • @Total_Body_Fitness_USA
      @Total_Body_Fitness_USA 3 года назад

      @@johnc.8298 Of course. People who ate meat with bad carbs, sugars, etc. had worse blood profiles and in worse overall health. Those who ate plant based diet also had issues as well as those who ate all meat (carnivore). People who were extremely overweight did very well for the first couple of years following a ketogenic diet. They dropped a significant amount of body fat and their entire blood markers improved across the board. However, some of those people had issues with inflammation and we had to change up their diet. The meat is not as much a problem as the source. Is it grass fed, no hormones, preparation during packaging, how it's prepared before cooking, how it's cooked, etc. all play a role in oxidative stress. Most people have no clue where to start and that's a huge problem. I've also had vegans that ate dairy, gluten, potato, breads, etc. and they were overly fat compared to muscle. Some had full blown diabetes. A lot to this, but in my professional opinion most people who are serious about their health should consult with a professional to get a diet and exercise program that is tailored to fit them based on their blood tests, DNA, health issues, etc.. This is truly the only way to get the best results when it comes to you.

      @@Total_Body_Fitness_USA Thanks for the time you took to write such a well detailed message. Your approach is of course sensible, how could it not be? It's difficult to separate one variable from a host of variables. The one point many people make, keto, vegan, etc. alike is that the Standard American Diet is the worst of all and any "diet" seems to be an improvement. Cutting out the junk and processed food industry "food" is the best start. Thx. again, J.

    • @Total_Body_Fitness_USA
      @Total_Body_Fitness_USA 3 года назад +2

      @@johnc.8298 Yes, any diet is an improvement over eating a bunch of processed junk foods high in sugar and bad fats/carbs. Good fats are not a problem as long as you don't combine them with bad carbs, sugars, etc.. Doing this causes a significant increase in triglycerides and weight gain in the form of body fat. Also causes insulin resistance and a lot of other health issues long term. Some people need to be careful with the amount of fat they eat regardless of type because they have a genetically elevated Lp(a) and they need to do everything they can to decrease total LDL. Some people can eat all the fat they want and their LDL never changes or sometimes it decreases. However, is some people a high fat diet significantly increases LDL which for the most part is not a bad thing considering the triglycerides are below 100 and the HDL is preferably above 50, AND they don't have a genetically elevated Lp(a). This is why it's so important for people to do blood testing to get a baseline. Go on their diet and then check blood again in 90 days to see the changes. Most people don't do this and they end up in trouble down the road. Take care!
