Fun fact. Burgess Meredith actually HATED smoking. He'd given it up 20 years prior to the role and found the cigarette smoke extremely irritating for his throat, ironically resulting in him developing the iconic "quack quack quack" laugh as a means of hiding the constant coughing.... Actually, this fact's not very fun is it? Just makes you feel sorry for the guy.
My favorite Burgess Meredith "Penguin" moment happened in the 70's. Meredith was co-hosting a series called "Amazing Animals", and one episode featured a small colony of Penguins in the studio. At one point Meredtih told the Penguins to follow him, and he'd "teach them to waddle like the Penguin do..." and he walked out in the penguin walk he'd made famous during the Bataman series, and when the penguins followed him it was priceless!
I actually enjoy the fact that the Penguin had to struggle so much to survive, since it allowed us to get so many different takes on him, and there seems to be something to enjoy in most of them, different as they are. For me, the defining trait for the Penguin is his giant and frail ego. He wants to fit into society... well, high society at any rate... but he also has the need to be notorious. Basically is mantra seems to be "Why can't people just accept me for who I am? Their superior!"

This is such a great video on this character. Like, realy good. You should make an add on video or update. Hes had some pretty epic appearances since this video. 👏🏽
While the Joker really doesn't deserve one of these, I really wish you'd make one of him. I think someone needs to make a really concise and well documented analysis of how he rose from clown prince of crime, to the edgelord of comics. He's a character that really is just pandering to the general audience
Brilliant video! No one does these character histories better than you! I hope you will take a break and then once rested and interested try another. I would love to see you trace the history of the Scarecrow, the Red Skull, or Nightmare! Thanks again for all your great reviews!
TheVetoSkreeemer Just checked and didn't see a character history for Scarecrow. Mr. Rogues has a lot of great Scarecrow videos but I didn't see his complete history for Scarecrow.
As much as I love Batman Returns and Danny DeVito's performance in it, I never cared for the "freak" version of Penguin in anything else. My personal favorite version of Cobblepot is the second Batman TOS version, where he runs the Iceburg Lounge but has the classic personality and look. Batman TOS had the best voice for him too.
The Penguin in the Arkham Games is imo the best version, but I love Burton's creative take. The only issue I have with it is that after the initial scene with Max Schreck, he loses his intellectual threat and becomes Shrecks pawn. A tension between Penguin and Shreck would have made the character seem stronger.
One of your best vids. If you ever have the time to do another one do so please. Very facsinating that fans seemed to revolt against the Penguin. I loved him in the Arkham games and feel that he should and could be elevated a bit more as a threat in the comics.
The Penguin has always been my favorite and this video is great because it's hard to get a lot of info on the character. A video/list of stories in which he appears would be awesome!!!
This is such a great vid! Thanks, its a video the Penguin needs! I have always loved the Penguin, and have always felt he was # 2. Donald Pleasence, Anthony Hopkins, and Ian Holm should have been the wobbling pompous, with an umbrella. Just think of that.
He should have been. Could you just imagine. It should have been Jack Nicholson as the Joker, Donald Plesence as the Penguin, Robert de Nerio as Two-Face. And Willam Dafoe as Aquaman. Lol. That would have been so perfect. Where do you find all this info for doing these videos. You do a great job. I know you are into horror films as well. I highly recommend two: Silver Bullet, and The Night Flier. Both are by Stephen King.
I love the joker but tbh the penguin is my favourite batman villain. I grew up on the danny devito and the animated series versions of the penguin and i recently started watching gotham. Robin lord taylor is fantastic but danny devito is still my favourite. I cant wait to see colin Farrells interpretation of the character.
I think penguin isn't very popular at the moment because most people don't know who he actually is. There are no mainstream comic accurate depictions of him right now.
Awesome video! Really went in depth on penguins growth and change throughout cobblepotts time in comics. I was wondering, could you do a Gotham video? The show is ending soon so I think it's the right time too😂. Gotham's version of him is my favorite.
Great rundown as always! For some reason this was the one I wanted to see the most of any of them. What can I say, I just have a soft spot for this character! Lol If you do continue however my gut instinct recommend Mad Hatter given that he’s another classic villain whose popularity has fluctuated significantly including having a phase of mockery like Penguin, Riddler, and even Scarecrow all got to some extent. Because they’re not as “Extreme” as guys like Ra’s al Ghul, Black Mask, Bane, or Hush I guess? Haha But naturally the problem with Hatter would be that he doesn’t have the longest history, especially due to the whole impostor switcheroo with a character you’ve already covered. I mean as far as the golden oldies go there is The Joker and Catwoman I guess, but of course due to pretty much always being popular and front-and-center up to today they probably have been covered more heavily and don’t have as much of a rollercoaster with the fans or publication. Maybe Mr. Freeze or Poison Ivy could be fun. Lol So the last guy I can think would be Hugo Strange. I don’t remember you covering him yet, and he gets dragged out every several years like the cicadas too much to technically classify as forgotten. Eh, whatever the case I trust your judgment! Haha
@Mr. Rogues: Great job on the video! My favorite version of the Penguin is the one from the Batman Arkham games. Also, have you thought about maybe covering the history of some of Spider-man's rogues?
For me, Penguin is n:o 1. Like most versions I'm familiar with a lot (very much including Gotham and Batman Returns), though the one from the animated "The Batman", I don't know... Fun to see "Snow and Ice", which I feel like we must have read the same Swedish translation of. Cheers, thanks for the video!
"...The Batman Telltale Game, which featured a very, very boring-looking Ozzy..." I laughed so hard I literally had to stop the video. That caught me off-guard for some reason, but it also made me happy, because that is so completely true, and it's honestly my biggest problem with that version. As always, a very in-depth and interesting look at Penguin's history as a character. I also couldn't help but sort of smirk with pride at the mentions of Broadway Bates and the story "Oswald Who?" ;) Like you, I agree that the Penguin needs to reappear in a film as something closer to the comics depiction. There was actually a fanfic, of all things, that I think presented a very plausible idea: in it, Oswald was shown as an arms dealer in league with the mob, who hid weapons in umbrellas and kept a shotgun umbrella as a personal weapon. He was an eccentric sort - they described him as wearing the classic top hat and monocle - but was a lot closer to something out of the Arkham games (though the fic was set in the Nolanverse, for the record). When a bloody fanfic can do better work with Penguin, in a way that fits the comics but also fits what I think mainstream people SEEM to be looking for in cinema, and said cinema hasn't done that? Yeah, something is seriously wrong. Don't get me wrong, I DO like Danny DeVito's Penguin, but I've always said that I swear Burton and/or the screenwriters must have read a Killer Croc story at some point, because you could have made that character Waylon and almost nothing would have had to change. (There's another idea for a fanfic...TO YOUR KEYBOARDS, WRITERS, IF YOU HAVE READ THIS!) ANYWAY, as far as my favorite version goes: I love Burgess Meredith as much as the next self-respecting non-IGN-member of the Bat fandom, and Gotham's Penguin is easily my favorite character in that show, and the only one who I feel has been consistently well-handled throughout its run, even if it took me time to warm up to him. I also love The Batman's version and the Arkham version. However, in my book, my favorite version of the Penguin has to be the one from the DCAU: the one from TAS and TNBA. First of all, Paul Williams and David Ogden Stiers are almost always the voice(s) I hear when reading Penguin (sometimes Meredith sneaks in there), and second of all, I honestly just feel that version of Pengy had a little bit of the best of both worlds, in terms of how the character has been portrayed. In TAS you had the more monstrous design popularized by Batman Returns, but the personality and types of crimes he pulled were closer to the classic depiction of the Penguin. In contrast, for TNBA, as you say, you had a classic-looking Penguin in a more modern style, setting up at the Iceberg Lounge. So if you like classic Pengy, there's plenty there, but if you like more modern versions - such as Returns or the "mob boss" now prominent today - there's stuff for you there, too. I happen to like all three, so it makes me VERY happy indeed. XD As far as continuing this series: I have a suggestion. Perhaps you could do these as a special event. Doing one a year (presuming things continue as well as they have), or perhaps one every six months, or something like that. Since they are longer and take much more work, they make great "special material," in my opinion. But, again, this is just a suggestion; you can take it or leave it. I'd love to see more of these, personally, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that, but I completely understand your reasons for being torn. I'm curious to see how one for Sinestro would pan out...speaking of, I should probably make a list for Mr. Purple-Face-and-Yellow-Ring, shouldn't I...? (adds that to my to-do list) Oh, and if you SHOULD decide to do something like this again, and want to turn to Bat Rogues once more...perhaps one more neglected and thus easier to sum up would be desired? As well as being less work for you, it would also be a good way to get that character into the spotlight more. I of course have my own biases towards certain subjects, if that's the case... (eyes a folder labelled "Jervis T.", and hides it under my desk)...but I digress.
That's right, YOU informed me of those facts ;) and they're very important facts too. I don't know if I'd been able to discover them on my own, as there's so little information on the net. Kinda weird that no one's documented just exactly where Ozzie got his name. The only part that's well known is the one about kool cigarettes - Bob Kane himself even says it in one of the Batman Returns documentaires. Well, we'll simply see what happens with this series; once a year isn't such a bad idea.
Most of the time wherever the joker appears the penguin is bound to arrive there eventually I’m really happy about that as he’s one of my favorite Batman villains alongside scarecrow and clayface
I think the current #2 is Bane, which is honestly disappointing since he's so new. Every debate over this I read however, always comes down to Bane, Ras al Ghul, and Two-Face. Ras is kind of boring and Two-Face has a TON of untapped potential, so he could probably swing back into #2 once he's written correctly more often. Oh and when they stop saying Bane is smarter than him. His plan was very basic and simple, and the way he finds out his identity was dumb. He's highly intelligent, but there's nothing to say Dent couldn't do what he did if he ever tried.
I would absolutely LOVE a Complete History of Ra's al Ghul. But I kind of doubt Rogues will do it since he has said several times that he doesn't even really like Ra's that much.
His brief presence in Beware the Batman intrigued me. Yeah, it was just a small cameo and some references, but Beware liked to foreshadow upcoming characters like that. So, maybe they had plans for Oswald in the second season they never got to make.
In the comics Penguin looked like a Comedy character for a while. But its actually a good irony. He looks more bizarre than most of Batman's villains. But he is actually one of Batman's most ordinary enemies. He wasn't dumped into a vat of acid like the joker. He isn't an Eco-terrorist like Poison Ivy. He was bullied as a child and became a gangster to make money and take revenge on the world. He shows that something can look fancy but still be utterly common and pedestrian. But the irony also goes the other way. If The Batman who Laughs is telling the truth, then he is the last rogue to fall to Batman in most universes. He looks silly. But he is actually Batman's most recalcitrant enemy.
There’s an upcoming Batman mini-series coming out featuring Catwoman, the Penguin, and the one and only great and intelligent Riddler teaming up to pull off the greatest heist in history. I can’t remember what the name of series is. I think you would like “The Joker Presents: A Puzzle Box”. It’s a mystery involving multiple rogues including the Penguin, Two-Face, Black Mask, the amazing Riddler (who is a focus point of the series), the Mad Hatter, Scarecrow (who beats up Bane like it’s nothing in the latest issue, they decided to go with a stupid Bane unfortunately of course this is being told to us through the Joker’s point of view so I’m a little ok with that portrayal), Killer Croc, and many more. It involves Commissioner Gordon and Harvey Bullock investigating the supposed death of the Riddler with the only one at the beginning willing to talk being the Joker, who isn’t the most trustworthy narrator. As the series progress and more rogues are interrogated it is shown that things aren’t what they seem. Featuring the rogues planning something as a subplot while incarcerated at the GCPD.
My favorite version of the penguin is definetly gotham's one, cause it's the one that truly shows how oswald cobblepot became the penguin, in most versions they show him as the king of gotham but how did he make it there, only Robin Lord Taylor can answer that
When I was a kid, I dismissed the penguin. No cool powers or unique skills, and just a dumpy little guy with umbrella gadgets; not even a cool crime gimmick. Several years of growing up, and the existence of one Batman : TAS later, I have more respect for the Felon of Feathers. Heck, I don't like 'The Batman' much, but happily admit the Penguin was well played and made for a charming villain in both comic relief and primary antagonist roles.
I always though that Penguin would make a good freelance spy. Selling information to the highest bidder. He could also so have a love/hate relationship with Catwoman.
NIce history video man, peguin is my favorite batman villain for his style an that fact he isnt crazy,i like my peguin in the middle he is a mob boss who runs the iceberg place, but he uses trick umberalles an still goes whack whack whack an has a peguin fetish.
Please continue these series. Catwoman is certainly one to consider. Ivy another. It's not like you're doing egg head, false face. Louie lilac, tut, and clock king. Catwoman, bane, ivy, are 3 to consider
dixons version is my favorite i think him being the kingpin of Gothams underworld works so well and the batman Arkham games adopted this version to and he's one of my favorite villains in the game series

Slade is not a Batman rogue. He us a TT rogue.
especially now in gotham's final season, oswald really is the 'emperor penguin' and has evolved into the fully formed rouge that we all know and love
14:30 I personally hate both villains of Batman Returns due to their being portrayed as crazy, as Catwoman and Penguin are suppose to be the most sane of the Rogues Gallery!
We need MORE of those historical videos! Great job!
"You'll never get away with this, FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT!", lol
This is such a great video on this character. Like, realy good. You should make an add on video or update. Hes had some pretty epic appearances since this video. 👏🏽
I’m enchanted by Penguins portrayal in the TAS the most of all the others
The hellish hexagon of rogues wouldn’t be complete without history videos for Catwoman and Poison Ivy ❤️
Don't forget Deathstroke

Thank you for this history of Penguin.
While the Joker really doesn't deserve one of these, I really wish you'd make one of him. I think someone needs to make a really concise and well documented analysis of how he rose from clown prince of crime, to the edgelord of comics. He's a character that really is just pandering to the general audience
"The edgelord of comics" hahahaha so true
Amazing video! Keep up the good work!
Brilliant video! No one does these character histories better than you! I hope you will take a break and then once rested and interested try another. I would love to see you trace the history of the Scarecrow, the Red Skull, or Nightmare! Thanks again for all your great reviews!
He alrwady did the Scarecrow, check that video.
TheVetoSkreeemer Just checked and didn't see a character history for Scarecrow. Mr. Rogues has a lot of great Scarecrow videos but I didn't see his complete history for Scarecrow.
@@scottfree2248 Look on his video lists, it is there along with the.Penguin,Scarecrow and Riddler.
TheVetoSkreeemer Found it! Thanks!
@@scottfree2248 Enjoy!
This is my favorite series of yours! I'd love to see you do more, but you should certainly do what you feel is best.
Exactly
One of your best vids. If you ever have the time to do another one do so please. Very facsinating that fans seemed to revolt against the Penguin. I loved him in the Arkham games and feel that he should and could be elevated a bit more as a threat in the comics.
The Penguin has always been my favorite and this video is great because it's hard to get a lot of info on the character. A video/list of stories in which he appears would be awesome!!!
Well, I did do a list of his 5 best stories a long time ago, if that's any help.
This is such a great vid! Thanks, its a video the Penguin needs! I have always loved the Penguin, and have always felt he was # 2. Donald Pleasence, Anthony Hopkins, and Ian Holm should have been the wobbling pompous, with an umbrella. Just think of that.
Thanks! Yeah, now that you mention it, Pleasence would've been a perfect Pengy back in the day.
17:15 -- Probably didn't help that this version looked like an evil Glenn Quagmire :(
One thing I forgot to mention, with the appearances of people like Sammo Hung, Penguin being able to fight isn't as ludicrous as it seems.
Nice video dude
I love the joker but tbh the penguin is my favourite batman villain. I grew up on the danny devito and the animated series versions of the penguin and i recently started watching gotham. Robin lord taylor is fantastic but danny devito is still my favourite. I cant wait to see colin Farrells interpretation of the character.
*THIS*, is a "Best Review"!😉
Great, another history video. I love these.
How cool would it have been if Penguin was randomly added to MK11 instead of Joker... Push Penguin, damn it!
your stuff is consistently great. i love it, keep it up!!!
oh robin lord taylor's penguin is the beeeeeeeeeeest
A GREAT and cohesive video♥ The penguin is my favorite and it feels like he's been ignored, but I had no idea how popular he was/is?.
I think penguin isn't very popular at the moment because most people don't know who he actually is. There are no mainstream comic accurate depictions of him right now.
I actually enjoy these, please make more, Hell I'll help research it.
Awesome video! Really went in depth on penguins growth and change throughout cobblepotts time in comics. I was wondering, could you do a Gotham video? The show is ending soon so I think it's the right time too😂. Gotham's version of him is my favorite.
Thanks! I will do a Gotham video, once I finally watch the rest of the seasons... :P
Mr. Rogues awesome! The premiere was really good, I was a little surprised on the you know what.
Drinking game: take a shot each time Rouges refers to The Penguin by some form of tiltle.
That k .G. Bird is always a classic
Great rundown as always! For some reason this was the one I wanted to see the most of any of them. What can I say, I just have a soft spot for this character! Lol
If you do continue however my gut instinct recommend Mad Hatter given that he’s another classic villain whose popularity has fluctuated significantly including having a phase of mockery like Penguin, Riddler, and even Scarecrow all got to some extent. Because they’re not as “Extreme” as guys like Ra’s al Ghul, Black Mask, Bane, or Hush I guess? Haha
But naturally the problem with Hatter would be that he doesn’t have the longest history, especially due to the whole impostor switcheroo with a character you’ve already covered.
Lol
So the last guy I can think would be Hugo Strange. I don’t remember you covering him yet, and he gets dragged out every several years like the cicadas too much to technically classify as forgotten. Eh, whatever the case I trust your judgment! Haha
keep this great work, that's just perfect
"aliens, robots, rainbow creatures, giants, dragons, aliens, and *more* aliens.Did I mention aliens? Yeah a whole lot of aliens"👽
*¯\_(ツ)_/¯*
Of the choices you gave, TAS was the best. Late 80s to mid 90s comics had the best penguin in my opinion, even if they didn't sell as well.
Paul Williams/Batman TAS Pengy FTW. Danny Devito was born to play him, but Tim Burton mucked it up. :(
"...The Batman Telltale Game, which featured a very, very boring-looking Ozzy..."
I laughed so hard I literally had to stop the video.
(There's another idea for a fanfic...TO YOUR KEYBOARDS, WRITERS, IF YOU HAVE READ THIS!)
ANYWAY, as far as my favorite version goes: I love Burgess Meredith as much as the next self-respecting non-IGN-member of the Bat fandom, and Gotham's Penguin is easily my favorite character in that show, and the only one who I feel has been consistently well-handled throughout its run, even if it took me time to warm up to him. XD
As far as continuing this series: I have a suggestion. (adds that to my to-do list)
Oh, and if you SHOULD decide to do something like this again, and want to turn to Bat Rogues once more...perhaps one more neglected and thus easier to sum up would be desired?
9:18 yes and it was supposed to called the League of evil which would more bat villains but instead they had to call them the legion of doom.
How I missed those videos. The best rogues videos belongs to the one and only
Oswald Cobblepot aka PENGUIN is a version of Rudy Guilani Blessings and HUGS! 👑💜
I'm a 90's kid so the Animated series is by far my favorite.
If you do another of these Ras would be fun to learn more about.
Tas is my favourite penguin.
I don't like so much penguin because he is only a mafia boss
@@nevermind-9630 you are WRONG, he is an antisocial expert thief who wants to defeat the Batman and be respected by high society
My favorite version of the penguin is definetly gotham's one, cause it's the one that truly shows how oswald cobblepot became the penguin, in most versions they show him as the king of gotham but how did he make it there, only Robin Lord Taylor can answer that
My favorites 1st to last is: Scooby Doo, Lego Batman, The Batman Cartoon, and Batman Returns.
When you feel bad for a villain, thats when you know its a good character.
7:18 Look at the Penguins face right here
Needed this info for an animation because I want to use penguin but don't actually know what he does
I think The Batman's version of the Penguin is my favorite. It was also one of the first pieces of Batman media I've ever seen.
Penguin is one of my top ten Batman villains!
His trick umbrella fits in with the spy theme, as apparently spies in the past actually used secretly weaponized umbrellas.
NIce history video man, peguin is my favorite batman villain for his style an that fact he isnt crazy,i like my peguin in the middle he is a mob boss who runs the iceberg place, but he uses trick umberalles an still goes whack whack whack an has a peguin fetish.
Well is it too late to say "Happy new year"?
Please continue these series. Catwoman is certainly one to consider. Ivy another. It's not like you're doing egg head, false face. Louie lilac, tut, and clock king. Catwoman, bane, ivy, are 3 to consider
You should do the history of Posion Ivy and the history of Hugo Strange.
dixons version is my favorite i think him being the kingpin of Gothams underworld works so well and the batman Arkham games adopted this version to and he's one of my favorite villains in the game series
I think the Arkham games version is kind of bland though. They should've kept the gentleman gimmick rather than just making him a generic thug.
