    Fantastic video! I never realized that there was a seventeen year interval between the Riddler's first appearances and his sixties breakout! Although the Riddler has had some times when he was marginalized he is such a classic rogue that his place as one of Batman's greatest foes can never be denied! Looking forward to More of these rogue histories! Thanks Gotham Rogues for a great new series!

    I love this series already. Series like this have been done for heroes before, but I cannot recall any that focus specifically on the villains.
    As for my favourite Riddler, well it's actually the reformed version from Paul Dini's run in the 2000s, which really should've stuck, though If I was going to limit myself to the villainous versions of the Riddler, I would go for the DCAU version.

      I think Comic Drake has done something sorta like this for Riddler, although honestly I never watched the video, so it may not be that similar.

    Excellent, super informative video. I'm a big Riddler guy but I've never read or seen anything that offers his real-life history in such a complete, comprehensive way. This is the kind of well-curated perspective you don't get by going to a wiki page that's just a badly-edited rundown of an insanely convoluted fictional biography. Thanks for this, I learned a lot. Please do more!

    As Danny Buckle said earlier, we have had videos like this before on other channels, but not nearly as in-depth, at least to my knowledge...at least, not for the villains. I can see why this video took you so long to make, and it's clear you put a lot of effort and research into this. I like how you tried to take a look at not only the character's history in the comics, pointing out a few key storylines along the way, but also looked at some of the versions in other media briefly. Given how much this took, I'm not sure what plans you have for future episodes of the series, but I'm curious to see more.
    As far as my favorite version of the Riddler: in the comics, that's really, REALLY tough to say, because the comics are ever-changing. But in terms of other media: without a shadow of a doubt, it's Frank Gorshin. As I've said before, I feel the Riddler essentially has two sides to his personality: the calculating criminal mastermind, and the wily and whimsical trickster. Some versions focus on one side more than the other (Jim Carrey vs. the Arkham version), but Gorshin felt like a perfect blend of both. He had his infamously manic and wild moments, but there were also moments where he could be incredibly cold and seriously sinister. As a result, he remains my definitive Riddler.

    • @mr.rogues4145
      @mr.rogues4145  6 лет назад +3

      Indeed, it was quite daunting work.. I wont be able to do these too often, BUT, I will atleast do Scarecrow and Two-Face as well. Probably Penguin also. I want to do Joker, but considering his countless number of appearances that would be like trying to climb Mount Everest.. Not sure I'm up for that, for my own sanity's sake.
      I think you've got a good point there about Frank's version, and it's probably why I like it so much too. I'm still not entirely sure if I could truly call it my favorite Riddler though.. Actually not sure which one it would be..

    You sir have earned a new subscriber today thanks to this excellent video ! And btw I love the stuff on your channel ! Keep up the good work !
    You made me realized how much the Riddler was underrated for several decades, such a shame for this great villain imo. Now I understand better why was he portrayed the way he was in the Secret Origins Special ; it get over my head at the time...
    Since you are so dedicated to bat villains my advice for you is to read the collections of short stories published in the 90s called The further adventures of the Joker and the further adventures of Batman : featuring Catwoman/the Penguin. You can find them almost for nothing and some stories are worth checking out. It's no comic book but, just like movies and animated series, it's an other take on the characters, with each story having it's own atmosphere. Some would make great BTAS episodes ! Unfortunately not all villains were featured into these stories but I definitely recommend them to you !

    Firstly, let me tell you that I already LOVE this series, it clearly shows your esteem for each rogue, also I have to say this is a magnific video, as always.
    Personally I believe my favorite incarnation of The Riddler, besides the comics, must be the one from the Arkham series or from the DCAU.
    As for my favorite Riddler comic it might be Questions multiply the mistery, or Dark knight, Dark city.
    Lastly I wanna leave an enigma, it's a modification of a riddle I read in a comic.

    Sorry of bad english and little vague language. I really like this idea Mr. Rogues. It helps to understand the evolution of rogues. Like how they were percieved during the times and what they did in order to preserve. Also this is very good at covering some overlooked little facts, which really help to fill some blanks.
    I think this format best suits rogues that are "seen rather black and white" (Riddler, Penguin, Bane), the ones who change a lot during the years (The Joker) and long-time rogues that remain secretive despite their significance (Hugo Strange.)

    great video, the Riddler is my favourite Rogue of all time! as someone who started getting into the comics recently (Gotham made him fall in love with the Batman Universe), this was an incredibly interesting video :D
    and I agree on your arguement about him not bein prominent/interesting enough in the movies. back when WB announced Gotham City Sirens, I was hoping that Ed would appear as a supporting character (because I'd love to see more of the reformed Riddler), but it looks like they scrapped that idea...one can only hope that he'll have an interesting role in the DCEU (or the animated movies!) in the future.

      Joe Chill I love how he's a villain that battles others through his intelligence and not physical strength. also, he's an incredibly arrogant person who's repressing his inner need of love and attention, that can create quite emotional moments when his fears and weaknesses are revealed.

      Severus Snape yes, great reply! my favourite comic version of the Riddler so far is the reformed Riddler - but to be fair, I haven't read a lot of the comics. Gotham is my fave version of the character (bc that's how I got introduced to him and started liking him) but The Animated Series and the Arkham games are also up there! he also seems interesting in the 60s show, saw a few eps of that one.

But I'm actually not sure about Joker and Selina; I WANT to do them, but they've made sooooo many appearances throughout the decades that it would seem like a really daunting task..

Riddler really makes you as the reader invested in figuring out his puzzles just as Batman is doing the same ! He’s really great for engaging the reader

    I actually found Jim Carrey's portrayal of the Riddler rather interesting. He was an interesting combination of obsessiveness, intelligence, insanity, and even a little humor thrown in for good measure. I definitely wouldn't say he's my favorite depiction.
    I can't exactly narrow down a particular depiction as of yet. But I definitely prefer the more suave and sophisticated Riddler to the can't be cartoony version.

    I think you underestimate the impact Frank Gorshin's performance had on the Riddler, who pretty much rewrote the character to his vision, even redesigning his costume from the classic tights to the Gorshin preferred suit and bowler. The Riddler is also the first villain of the Silver Age, which would keep himn in memory even if he never emerged from his early banishment and malaise.

    9:20 I honestly thought those were fake/made without permission. I'd have to say my favorite version is from Batman the Animated Series, I think that's the one that introduced me to the character, and the goofy Riddler from Batman 66 is fun to. I do like the idea of this series, and I hope you do more. Good video Mr. Rogues.

    Okay, from this video I've realised we need a new Ben Affleck batman trilogy about these villains once humiliated by past interpretations of th characters. Forget deathstroke, a need The Riddler, Mr Freeze and poison ivy in their own respectable movies, they can't be secondary appearances or side villains, MAJOR characters! Do it dc! DO IT!

    • @mr.rogues4145
      @mr.rogues4145  6 лет назад +3

      Yeah I never was very keen on a Batman movie with Deathstroke anyway. I mean sure, he can be IN it, but not as the main villain. He's not even really a Batman villain, but a Teen Titans villain if anything.
      That said, I don't mind if they recast Affleck. I'd actually prefer if they made a Bat-trilogy that's almost separate from the DCEU. They can mention the Daily Planet or Central City or something, but that should be about it.

    • @scotia7326
      @scotia7326 6 лет назад

      Gotham Rogues I agree, I heard a rumour of different people such as Jake Gyllenhaal from nightcrawler being cast, maybe he could work but I would prefer someone like Michael fassbender (?) Or Tom hardy (?) Or even Chris Pratt as batman if they recast him. I actually recommend they make a batman beyond movie, because that way they can cast a real life Kevin Conroy as an old Bruce Wayne, true he's only like 55 or something but he looks the part and the villains of batman beyond deserve to be spoke about more than they are. Thoughts on recasting? Will you talk about batman beyond villains at some point?

    • @mr.rogues4145
      @mr.rogues4145  6 лет назад +1

      Honestly I don't really know who I'd like to play Batman, or any of the villains for that matter.. I've had some ideal choices in the past, but they're all either too old (Willem Dafoe as Joker), or even dead (Bob Hoskins as Penguin). Alec Baldwin and Karl Urban could've been great Batmen, but they're too old now. Waaaay too old in the case of Baldwin.. Sure they could perhaps play and older Batman, but what I think we need now is a younger bats, after Batfleck and old-man Bale in TDKR. I'd say a guy in his late 20s, early 30s. Maybe a relative unknown, as in the casting of Bale, and Reeves as Superman. Someone who hasn't done a big blockbuster yet.
      As for a Beyond movie, sure that could be interesting, but I want proper Batman movies as well. They could make them both I guess, without interfering with each other.
      I will probably do a video on the Beyond rogues. I was thinking of a 'top 5 best beyond villains' video.

      @@mr.rogues4145 I don't know, Deathstroke as a villain in a Batman movie, that I'd see since Deathstroke lost an eye to Batman during the events of "Year One", but of course I'm all for a Batman movie, most likely one that would have Dick Grayson in it as the first Robin, I'd even feature Bane in it with Kane playing him, it'll even include a post credit scene where Damien Dahrk and Tony Zuccho's son steal the Red X costume, something that would lead to the Teen Titans' big due in the DCEU, featuring Danielle Panabaker as Poison Ivy in the movie's prologue, there will even be other villains that would deserve their due

    I love the riddler I see Riddler as a top tier batman villain that on occasion fits as a b string villain of given the right story, and others as the main mastermind. Batman has sooooo many good villains its hard to stay on top forever unless your joker. Even Twoface who is my favorite is rn not where I think he should be ranked. He hasn't had even the love Riddler had lately.

    Great new series, although the part with the 60's Batman TV series has made me realize something that I don't think anyone has brought up before.
    Given that he was the first villain used in the show, and that he had the most appearances of the villains in the first season, 8 in total, Riddler's technically the main antagonist of Season One. While Pengiun, Joker and Catwoman had more appearances than him overall, his more prominent stance in the beginning of the show made him Batman's primary arch for that season.
    Same could be said for the Penguin, and to a lesser extent the Joker. Penguin would the main antagonist of not just Season 2, being the most recurring villain of the season, and one of the two main antagonists of Season 3, tied with Joker for the most episodes, five each, but also the series as a whole since he had the highest number of Bat Rogue appearances, 20 altogether, and served as Batgirl's archenemy in Season 3.
    While the Joker is Batman's archenemy and had the second most appearances of the villains, 19 in total, his actual title of archenemy is dwarfed because of how every villain is treated as arch-foes in that series.
    What do you think?

    • @mr.rogues4145
      @mr.rogues4145  6 лет назад +1

      I agree. Batman didn't really have one arch nemesis in the 60s show, they were all equally big (well atleast the main four). That's another aspect of the show that's so great.

Do you have any idea when his suit costume was first used in the comics? I know it first appeared in media in the 60s tv series (I think Gorshin came up with the design) but I'm not sure when it was first adapted to comics.

    • @mr.rogues4145
      @mr.rogues4145  6 лет назад +1

      I'm pretty certain the suit first showed up in the comics in Batman #362 from 1983, although only very briefly. He wears a green pinstriped suit and bowler hat in a couple of panels, only yo quickly discard it and reveal the standard spandex outfit underneath. The next time he wore a suit was in the 1989 Secret Origins Special, and I guess that can be counted as the first "real" appearance of the suit in the comics.
