Julia Holter: Tiny Desk Concert

- April 22, 2016 by LARS GOTRICH • Julia Holter's music exists in tiny universes, colliding in torch songs and bits of cosmic cabaret that are as reverent as they are perverse. The most minute details and the plainest words suddenly form a grandiose spectacle. Last year's Have You In My Wilderness saw Holter playing with subtle songs that unraveled more with each experience; in the NPR Music offices, those songs were given quiet and bombastic arrangements that felt close and distant at once, with a throwback to the bouncy "In The Green Wild" from 2013's Loud City Song.
Holter is joined by Devin Hoff (bass), Corey Fogel (drums, vocals) and Dina Maccabee (viola, vocals), and herself plays upright piano, which is a rare treat live. On tour, her keyboard allows synthetic textures to accentuate her clear voice, but when she hits the chorus in "Sea Calls Me Home" here, Holter floors the sustain pedal and pounds atonal chords with wild abandon as she sings, "I can't swim / It's lucidity / So clear!" The solo highlight "Betsy On The Roof" also benefits from the upright, but is quickly joined by light viola and bass as the song builds to a dramatic climax that has no choice but to fall apart in broken chords and desperate pleas.

That was a killer version of Green Wild. She's so cool and sincere and is always surrounded by fabulous musicians. 10/10 Great artist.
Always worthwhile to listen to Julia Holter. She's a really good musician, constantly moving forward, never repeating herself, getting freer with every record. The audacious type of artist. Great!
Love it! Have You In My Wilderness is definitely one of 15's best
Agreed. Has been on constant rotation since September last :-)
what an incredible Betsy rendition!!
Every track from loud city song is legendary
I love everything about her
Loved the instrumentation and performance here. The warm subdued piano and bass.. the dragging drums... viola player doing a bang up job.. ornamentation and all.
I would kill to see her live hhuhuhuhhu love you Julia Holterrrrrrrrrrrr
This music would make an awesome soundtrack for a film
Or trash particle.
My exact thought, honestly.
4 years later, she made the soundtrack for Never Rarely Sometimes Always!
Holy wow i love her!!! those lyrics and compositions are mastery!
0:00 Sea Calls Me Home
3:16 In the Green Wild
7:31 Betsy On The Roof
Her smile at 6:25 after she says the "lalala" part from in the green wild is so ADORABLE
When I first heard this performance, over a year ago...all I did was play it on repeat...for months. Surprised by all of the comments. I thought it was great.
Fun Fact! Devin Hoff, the bassist, was actually on Tiny Desk before, way back in 2010 with The Nels Cline Singers!
these versions of her songs are nuanced in a different fashion than the recordings, its almost as its gratifying to reinvent old things as an artist. who'd a thought
such a delightful violin!
At first, I thought the music was horrible, but as I continued to listen, her uniqueness began to grow on me. I enjoy this.
Reminds me a bit of Joanna Newsom!
Amber Dawn her music is seriously fantastic. It did take me quite a few months of coming back to though, in order to actually fall in love with it. Once you can follow and sing along to her melodies, it's wonderful.
Wow, the second song was especially incredible
This is great! All amazing players
Essa melodia me remete a tempos vividos com muita paz e tranquilidade.
I like that second song. Regarding her singing style, it is very rare for something so different to be this entertaining. She is truly an artist. I like the bass player too.
Amazing! What a voice!
Great! Thanks for the music
'In the Green Wild' is too sexy for this world.
same, except it's one of the most of-this-world things I've ever heard.
In The Green Wild is properly hypnotic.
She is babe, went to her London gig on Feb, it's amazing
God, i love this weird girl
Thanks for awakening my spirit.
Wish she played Feel You
i feel as it progressed it got much better. sea calls me home was a little shaky, but betsy on the roof was awesome.
Wish there was some more reverb on the microphone, but otherwise great performance
Wow!!! I loved her ... Why did I just discover her now???
6:22
i love this.
And i love the little writeup in the description box.
I have to say, very interesting... There's a strange attractiveness to it. A little odd, but it works that way.
Thomas Kittock Same thing here. Feels like something's wrong, but that is right this way and shouldn't be corrected.
+Thomas Kittock I agree. Every aspect is odd. But it draws you in and, dare I say, mesmerizes. It's like there is a purposeful fermentation. Like wine.
Avant - garde.
So good
she's so great, her lastest album is very nice.
Wow. She beautiful
so amazing
Digging that violin in the second song.
That's a viola amigo
my god this version of betsy on the roof is even better than the clock tower one
i wanna see the gig just for the drummer. Coolest.
The piano reminds me of Brian Wilson.
+Mark Lucio It reminds me of Regina Spektor
There are some definite Pet Sounds vibes
you should hear the album version ... even more so
I'm ur #1 fan, I swear
-_- no I am
So many complaints and comparisons to other musicians in the comments...
I don't understand why they comment that she sounds like Regina Spektor and Joanna Newsom.
I think we do it subconsciously. Searching for points of reference we feel more comfortable with.
Me encanta es estilo de esta joven
I lost it at the wala wala... 😂.
Why are people extra critical on tiny desk shows? Lol
+Paul D Hipsters like to be critical
This is terrible, though.
@@cl8804 I'm curious to know what about this performance you think is horrible
@@yahstino Sea Calls Me Home is poorly performed, in terms of vocals. The real problem is the mix, though-again especially the vocals are awful.
@@cl8804 I strongly disagree, to me her vocals nearly on par with the studio version. But hey, it's your opinion. Thanks for sharing.
The floor reminds me of a floor which i saw somewhere before
I hear so much Regina Spektor in this and I love it
❤️
7:00 min. she shows the best of her amazing instrument.
Cool
crazy violin player!
this music must be influenced by the luo reed era...nice lowwww whistling
she was a bird....
10:35 derp face lol
great performance otherwise
g heybriel
Bwahahaha! Can’t stop laughing now.
HAHAHHAHAHAHA FUCK
4.18 + twins peaks majesty
159 people accidently hit dislike??
167 people with awful music taste. I see no other explanation
Vocals a bit reminiscent of dresden dolls!
interesting…not sure what it is but there is something missing….
+Sean Meister It is as if the instrumentation doesn't tie together that well (live).
+Sean Meister True .. just listen to the official videos and you'll find out what it is. The only thing I like in this "unplugged" version is the Violin.
WLOMA ahh yes, it all makes much better sense now, thank you!
I feel the same... Probably like the description said, it's piano, not a keyboard
+Sean Meister Its a lack of reverb.
NPR IS THE SHITTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reminds me of Regina Spektor :)
Viola is good. Why does she sing like that? Is this her new thing?
Wow, Jojo Mayer on drum! Ahah!
that aint jojo
Intvite them please :)
Whistle game was weak.
It wouldn't exactly make Andrew Bird blush
Damn. Harsh comments! You'd probably hate it if someone said something similar to you.
lmfaooo
it's purposefully like that
reminds me of laurie anderson
Getting a serious Regina Spektor vibe from her
+[seasquare] Yeah, sounds a lot like early Spektor for sure.
+The Fourteenth Ward nothing to say about this, but I don't see why her liking someone she's being compared to matters.
+The Fourteenth Ward: Give this person a break, she reminds me of Regina too. It's her emotionally free styling unattached voice that reminds me of Regina. Obviously she isn't exactly the same, that's what's cool about music is that it's all going to be unique to the person creating it.
Regina Spektor is EXACTLY who I thought about when I heard her too. Just saw her (RS) a couple weeks ago in Chicago.
dresden dolls!
I wish she’d sung the titular line of In the Green Wild the same as on the record. It sounds a bit absurd with that melody added to it.
Who ever wrote the sentence above, "Julia Holter's music exists in tiny universes, colliding in torch songs and bits of cosmic cabaret that are as reverent as they are perverse..." should be rigorously spanked. BAD JOURNALIST. BAD JOURNALIST.
gorgeous and true and you need help
Hm..
Ah ok
She's cute
Frank`s band.
Yea I've watched several of her performances and it's just not doing it for me.
Reminds me a bit of Joanna Newsom
hmmm... something's off. Can't put my finger on it.
you
@@jalanxx4702 Man 7 years ago! Geez. You successfully got me to listen to it again... Yeah something is off about it. The uninspired sing-talking. The awkward background vocals. Bass is pretty good. But not my taste, glad others enjoy it though.
I REALLY don't like new music. FEW of these new bands are very worth listening to. God take me back to the good old days. 1965-1985.
we rly don’t gaf you don’t have much time left and you’re using it to hate on a great auteur
they do drugs what the heck
Too indie for me
Anyone else feel put off by her lack of appreciation? The way she introduced her last song while saying 'thank you' in such a flat tone felt distasteful.
Otherwise, I really did like the last song!
She said in an interview that she has trouble connecting to the audience while talking
DEFINITELY DEMOCRATS. HAHAHAHAHA NO ONE CAN TELL WHEN YOU MESS UP WITH THIS KIND OF MUSIC.
hot mess
DRAB.
too goofy. & nothing really sticks out aside from the atonal noises.
Atonal, dissonant, avantgarde justification of a method to downvote the same video more than once. Clicking thumbs-down repeatedly feels satisfying till you realize the number doesn't increment each time.
awhh and what have you done that’s 1/100000000th as beautiful as betsy on the roof?
dafuq
She's only 32 and her hair is already full of gray hairs o_o
She was actually only 31 in this video. Yeah seems like she is going gray early but it's the hip thing to do now. Many millennials going gray are just letting it go versus dying it like their elders did.
horrible!!!!
rubbish music!! waisted my time!!
small brain
She is a copy of Regina Spektor
I love Regina Spektor and I like Julia Holter...
and I disagree
I don't think Spektor is as innovative.
She's so much better
hydrogen bomb (julia) vs coughing baby (regina)
