I'm always finding my way back to this channel trying to figure out these things, and it's the most concise and helpful instructions every single time. Thanks man.
TIP: For anyone who doesn't want a 60gb+ download or 7000 games that you won't play, you can cherry pick zips of the web , and use MameUi's 'audit' tool (right click once your roms are scanned) on each rom to find what other files/ roms that game needs for it to run. HOWEVER, you will need to find the roms and dependent files from the same set, and ideally need to find said zips from a set/source that is the same or later than the version of mame you are running. Older roms will run if they are unchanged but you have no way of knowing that without keeping up with the update news, so just try them. This obviously takes time, but is far smaller and efficient than the All or nothing method. (my (non-chd) collection is 140 games @ 1.4gb btw).
Hey I'm just showing how I did it, and it worked. It was quicker than waiting for 60+gb to come down. Your method might be ok if you already run mame and know what to do, but it's its certainly not beginner friendly. Also clrmame's page has gone, it doesn't let you audit problems like mameUI, and by the time you've learnt how to use it, found the correct dat files etc, it's certainly no quicker . romlister doesn't do anything launchbox doesn't do on import, and it certainly doesn't curate 'good' games. just playable ones. you're still left with 1000+ games you'll never play.
Exactly. I need a lesson. That's my point. Whereas anyone can go to a good rom site (especially the one that lists the parents etc), find the game (they actually want), use mameUI to find the other files and run it through launchbox. done. Romlister still leaves me with 20 street fighters. I just want turbo, and super, and have no way of knowing if i delete the others what will stop working. All I'm saying is it was quicker this way if you want to "Cherry pick" like I originally said. Romlister is fine if you want a full set without the majongs and weird controller games, but it can't actually curate a set of just games you want.
This is the best Mame tutorial I have ever stumbled upon. Great video man and great taste in games, The main reason I wanted to set up Mame is to play the Simpsons arcade game which I loved to play when I was a kid :-)
ETA if you would make an updated version of this, it'd be amazing, especially considering the mame cores now in RetroArch. Thanks for all your hard work over the years!
Great content... Am I the only one who cannot find the two up-coming videos mentioned in this video? The CHD and home computer systems videos. Thank you for your effort Sir...
Much better than using the new mame import tool. I only have 200+ mame games so there is no need to use the mame tool that automatically downloads every damn graphic for every mame game. Thanks for the tutorial.
TIP: if anyone wants to user this emaulator but store the roms in another directory, on lanchbox, when you configure the emulator, add on the field "command line parameter" (the one under the path to the emulator executable) the folowing parameter: -rompath PAHT-TO-YOUR-ROMS , example: -rompath c:\temp oms\mame
yea its fucking bullshit i spent 12 hours today on the dummies guide. it literally lets you down load a pre configured mame set up from google drive and then lists exact sites to down load roms and the bios and shows exactly where to put them and whether zipped or unzipped. did one game work? NO
@@davidherron9151 Did you check the version of you rom set, with the MAME ver? and if your rom set, its the full build or just the update one? if yes, idk what maybe happening there.
@@marcelomaltapp I went decided to down load mame 2020 and the newest possible rom set and it just worked immediately .....with out any of this . David Herron bro I gave up as well I downloaded the old version and everything and nothing works but seeing you downloaded the 2020 version can you link me where you downloaded mame and what version you are using and the full romset?? Please
Done and done, it works like, but I needed to use the split rom pack as the merged version didn't start any game. I think there is a problem between the keyboard and the chair and it didn't understand the merged part. But still the plit pack works and I'm a happy man now. :) Thansk for your step by step and I'll hit that red button right away :)
I think it's important to note that I chose the option to move the files into Launchbox. After which I received errors saying that files could not be found. Seems Mame couldn't find the roms after LB moved them. So I had to launch Mameui and then go Options > Directories and then click the Insert button. I added the LaunchBox\Games\Arcade folder. Then when I launched within Launchbox they worked.
The Indie Diary I good mine off of cool roms just make sure you make a folder name it mame then extract it from there so file won’t be all over the place
some us my self included are not supposed to use computers..been trying to get a game working for 7 years lol...my mate can do it in a few seconds. but after i had to re set windows....yea its all gone haha
There are guides out there for reducing the file sizes DRAMATICALLY for these things btw... Idk if ETA PRIME has covered it, but basically you can just separate the games you want (probably removing a lot of clones, Mahjong games and other junk) and then you can just keep those games and delete the rest to save yourself like 90% of the hard drive space... Unless you like the clones and Mahjong games that much... God there's so much Mahjong...
Sorry not start over: Here is what I Have I have a arcade I built 2 players. control panel has joystick and 6 buttons each side. A player one and player two button. Two buttons for coins that are also hocked up to a coin box. Track ball and hooked one button for that. A sniper as well. Oh running windows 10 using Mameui64 and fond the split rom set. and using LaunchBox 10.7 All my roms are in my mame roms folder. Games load up in BigBox. When I get into the menu for the controls it will not recognize button, trackball or spinner. Dose this work with windows 10 from my laptop using a flash drive? Can you help? This is the best video so far every thing worked except the control panel. I like use the videos instead of reading. I see a lot of people say this is not working for them. Does any one have a running Arcade using mame, LaunchBox and windows 10 that has been works all the time?
got it working my first try. it's pretty amazing. great instructions. besides all the cool box art it seems like it has a lot of bezels too. now i need to know how to get chd and bios files in here. thanks.
To play a CHD game in MAME, place the CHD file in the appropriate folder. Within the "Roms" folder in MAME, create a new folder that uses the same name as your CHD file. For example, if the file name was xxxx.CHD, the new folder would be called xxxx. Place the CHD file inside of the folder; once the game is launched within MAME, it automatically detects the CHD file in the folder and your game will load.
Could you, or had anyone else, done a video on getting the Tiger Electronic hand held games going in MAME? I know they are not the greatest ever, but it would be neat to give it a try. Thanks for another great video.

Guys get mame4droid if you have android, and download Roms that are labelled mame 0.139u1 roms. They all work with it, it’s the easiest method to get most of the good games like simpsons, aliens vs predator, cowboys of moomesa, Bucky o hare, final fight, metamorphic, ect.
I have a quick question for anyone who could help. Most of the file sets for mame that I have found on archive .org were stated as "(merged)". Are these sets useable? Using the steps in this video leads me to having a library of one title being the culmination of all of the individual files. What step or steps would I need to take to get the files working as intended?
I attempted to pull the individual files out of the collectively zipped folder that looked to do the trick and now MameUI can't run any of them stating that certain portions are missing and that there was a fatal error causing it to force close the game's window. What am I doing wrong? I purchased mame arcade mainly for the cabinet, controller, screen, etc. The PC that was running it was old and pieced together with hard drives just taped haphazardly and a cd drive covering one of the main vents. There was no airflow in the tower taking into account the cabinet also has little ventilation. The thing was also using GameEx as a front end while I prefer the set up to be using Launch Box. So I am using a more up to date secondary PC to attempt a rework. Sadly I either can't find a working rom file set or I am missing something, because this isn't working.
make sure roms are in the rom folder of mame and I found out that the zipped roms need to be in the root directory of the the roms folder not a sub folder inside the roms folder that was my major mistake inside mame you than refresh roms in the start menu it should than pick up roms in your folder if any one was having trouble shoot issues.

Hello, I have a little funny question I have not finished arcade cabinet + minipac or keyboard encoder and if I set the buttons everything is ok but if I come back to play in time I need to set the so-called buttons again I set e.g. kbd 1 W, A, S, D pare days later i had kbd 2.3 and today i have kbd8. It irritates a bit that I have to set the buttons every now and again because the kbd (i.e. the keyboard) changes what it depends on and whether it can be assigned rigidly, I have 1 normal keyboard, 1x ipac and one mini bluetooth keyboard which is used only in the evening if I want to change the movie etc. Mame ver.185 but it doesn't matter on every version it's the same . I hope I explained ;)
Can anyone please help me to get the games running. I have launch box set up and says I have games but when i load the games it says loading but never loads. When I downloaded, I never saw a folder called ROMs in .0196 extras. Please advise

Why is it some MAME emulators (old as new) regonize the zip game and others dont (those that dont work says CHD files missing, but its the same Zip game file) I really am so annoyed of this NEED HELP
my ROM zips are in folders do they need to be out of folders??? when i copy them out a couple have similar names. I did the 85 with the zips in folders i couldnt get them to play in MAMEui, could with them out either I think.
The link for roms didn't work for me. I tried finding Joust and it was not available, tried the same with centipede, no luck. I have a crazy old version of mame from 1999 and it worked great but over the years it's gotten very unstable. I am trying to start over using mameui64
For some reason, I’m trying to play the games that I’ve imported onto LaunchBox from MAME and when I do so, instead of the game opening, I’m asked to extract the 7-Zip game file. Even when I do extract it, I try to open it again and it continues to ask me to extract it. Is it because I didn’t copy or move the ROMS over to LaunchBox? Edit: Nope, that’s not it. I need help
Love your vid's !! Just a little question, If you're using Launchbox, why do you use MameUI instead of Mame cli ? Anything you can recommend in MameUI version over Mame cli ?
wait where the hell did u get that rom set? the link is not in description unless its within one of those links which is for the other stuff u mentioned
I'm confused and would appreciate any help. Just tried importing my roms into launchbox and the transfer seemed to be okay. However, when I double click a rom to play it, I'm prompted to extracted it into my Downloads folder. Why is that?
Thanks for the tutorial ETA. Can you by any chance do one on TeknoParrot game setup, DosBox, and 3DO? Also do you know how to use the Xbox Kinect to do voice commands in Launchbox? Keep up the good work and keep the vids coming.
software list roms merged. The zip files are in folders. nothing plays. when I take the zips out of the folder and try and put them singly into the roms folder in MAMEUI, many of the zip files have the same name. I cant get them to play, I get an error message that I missing files. any insight anyone I'm a total noob on this.
NOOB update rom sets with "software list" somewhere in the are not what rom sets will work with MAMEUI in this video. Evidently even some rom sets that you download may not have "software list" in the title but will build a folder with this name. This again is NOT what your looking for if your following this tutorial.
could u please do a comparison between recallbox and MAME. I am trying to build an arcade cabinet with and old optiplex and I don't know what to do for the emulation OS. Please help me out. Thanks
Is there a way to import every game, delete the duplicates and clones, and save only a clean set of games? I did try but I end up with missing zip files, because launchbox delete the clone AND the original too; if you don't delete the extra files, you may end up deleting a clone and still keep trash zip files that are not associated with any game. I wish there was a rom set without clones at all; but can't find one
Go to get the rom set. Click on download. See how long it would take. Says 5 days left. Clicked chancel. Used mame and launchbox box before. Just single games though. It's easy to get up and running.
Hello can someone help me ? I have this up and running but I’m getting a dl-1425.bin error on some of the games I checked and the qsound folder with dL-1425.bin is in the ROMs folder . Any ideas would be appreciated.
Yeah I downloaded MAME .202 Rom set, 7zip, launchbox, and I downloaed the latest Mame UI from the site he said to... The 60GB Mame file on this server I got it from took TWO days to download and now i'm not even sure the files are good. I feel like screaming... Anyone got a link to a good Mame that won't take me days to download? The list of games shows up in launchbox but I get all sorts of various errors and nothing works... I set launchbox up with Mame like this video says but nope- doesn't work at ALL. I got like ONE game to load (Pong) and the ball just kept going back and forth and all of my buttons did nothing.... So I dunno what on earth is going on. The games show up in the Mame UI but none of them will load in there or from launchbox. =( I've been messing with this for days and wanna burn my computer now.
Well shit, I'm downloading the exact same things you did. I have a day or so left on my DL cause it's only giving like 700kbs!!! I hope it was not all for NOT!!!
And yes, in 2019, Mame is still not working. Can't get anything to work. Whatever rom I try to run, there always seem to be missing files. Retroarch is exactly the same, it does not work. It seems that it works with everyone, except with my computers. There should be a video where someone records from very start to finish, not where everything is already installed.
For some reason, i downloaded and did everything you said, but it doesn't work. When i open up mame, none of the roms work. Can you anyone help me please? I don't want this to become 60 gb of wasted space
Please also cover running Softlist CHD console games. I can run PC-Engine Dracula X no problem by simply selecting the game directly from MAME but for some reason Launchbox won’t start it.
So is there any benefit to using this over Retroarch? I have that configured and it works great. Kinda hesitant to abandon that. If it ain't broke don't fix it, right?
Wolvie 619 as far as I can tell, it's just a matter of preferring one method and frontend over another. I use Retroarch as well and it would take a lot for me to change my setup now, since it has solved many problems. And MAME runs fine within it. If you're happy, don't worry about it.
I'm always finding my way back to this channel trying to figure out these things, and it's the most concise and helpful instructions every single time. Thanks man.

Did you ever make the other videos in this series that you mentioned? The CHD video?
To play a CHD game in MAME, place the CHD file in the appropriate folder. Within the "Roms" folder in MAME, create a new folder that uses the same name as your CHD file. For example, if the file name was xxxx.CHD, the new folder would be called xxxx. Place the CHD file inside of the folder; once the game is launched within MAME, it automatically detects the CHD file in the folder and your game will load.

Mame ver.185 but it doesn't matter on every version it's the same
.
I hope I explained ;)
Can anyone please help me to get the games running. I have launch box set up and says I have games but when i load the games it says loading but never loads. When I downloaded, I never saw a folder called ROMs in .0196 extras. Please advise
FBA rom which option does one choose in Launch as it is giving me rom does not exist?
I am just glad to find a good Mame emulator lol. Thanks but I can’t wait for the chd one. The game I wanna play is Time Crisis 2 and 3 :) I hope you can help :)

Selecte a different machine epr.17741a.ic8 not found stvbios or epr18022.ic2 not found segabil. I'm new to the mame emulator. Please teach me the files I need to download where to download them and the step by step of how to run the game.
What do I have to search to get these ROMs pack that don't require chds..
Nice one thanks
Your title is wrongly stated that you're setting up Mame Plus when you're actually using MameUI64.
Is WWF Royal Rumble part of the games?
yeah i have a question. i run the newest version of mame64 and it didn't have a *rom* folder on it. what should i do?
When I double click nothing loads... tried multiple games
so is a pc the best way to make an arcade? I'm planning on modding my arcade 1up machine. What's the best thing to put in it?
Is there a way to use the joystick to move and select game instead of the mouse. Thanks
is choplifter one of those games?
do you download rom packs or handpick your roms? will this program weed out broken games??
if you skip clones will you be missing versions of games like street fighter 2?
Forgive my ignorance where can I get the games to set? I'm new to this and I'm still confused
I only want a few games how do i add just a select few games and not a set is it the same way
link says get MAMA here
Why is it some MAME emulators (old as new) regonize the zip game and others dont (those that dont work says CHD files missing, but its the same Zip game file) I really am so annoyed of this NEED HELP
THANK YOU
my ROM zips are in folders do they need to be out of folders??? when i copy them out a couple have similar names. I did the 85 with the zips in folders i couldnt get them to play in MAMEui, could with them out either I think.
thank you for reminding me about archive.org i forgot all about that site
The link for roms didn't work for me. I tried finding Joust and it was not available, tried the same with centipede, no luck. I have a crazy old version of mame from 1999 and it worked great but over the years it's gotten very unstable. I am trying to start over using mameui64
Can I run this on a Mac? Is there an iPhone equivalent?
I miss my vintage game list
For some reason, I’m trying to play the games that I’ve imported onto LaunchBox from MAME and when I do so, instead of the game opening, I’m asked to extract the 7-Zip game file. Even when I do extract it, I try to open it again and it continues to ask me to extract it. Is it because I didn’t copy or move the ROMS over to LaunchBox?
Edit: Nope, that’s not it.
I need help
Love your vid's !!
Just a little question, If you're using Launchbox, why do you use MameUI instead of Mame cli ?
Anything you can recommend in MameUI version over Mame cli ?
can someone lend a hand i got to 3.46 but dont se the split roms option folder what have i done wrong
wait where the hell did u get that rom set? the link is not in description unless its within one of those links which is for the other stuff u mentioned
Question.. I have several roms that work fine directly through mame, but won’t run in launchbox. The path is correct , what can I do to fix this?
I'm confused and would appreciate any help. Just tried importing my roms into launchbox and the transfer seemed to be okay. However, when I double click a rom to play it, I'm prompted to extracted it into my Downloads folder. Why is that?
I am use only for Macintosh. I don't use Windows. Commodore 64 in mame64 how can load .D64 and .TAP
Thanks for the tutorial ETA. Can you by any chance do one on TeknoParrot game setup, DosBox, and 3DO? Also do you know how to use the Xbox Kinect to do voice commands in Launchbox? Keep up the good work and keep the vids coming.
Trying to install a PC inside a arcade1up do I have to break the PC box down how can I do it without going through all that what do I need
software list roms merged.
Does one still need to map the controller buttons inside MameUI running a paid version of launchbox?
could u please do a comparison between recallbox and MAME.
Does LaunchBox have a way to run Neo Geo games in AES (home console) mode using MAME?
I need a bit of help! Why some of the games are not detected by Mame?
Can someone explain how to hotkey a controller to save and also exit a game in launchbox and retroarch?..
does ghosts n goblins need chd ?
Go to get the rom set. Click on download. See how long it would take. Says 5 days left. Clicked chancel.
Used mame and launchbox box before. Just single games though. It's easy to get up and running.
Use a torrent for the games.
Hello can someone help me ? I have this up and running but I’m getting a dl-1425.bin error on some of the games
I checked and the qsound folder with dL-1425.bin is in the ROMs folder . Any ideas would be appreciated.
where is the roms are they supposed to be with the file cause its not there
Yeah I downloaded MAME .202 Rom set, 7zip, launchbox, and I downloaed the latest Mame UI from the site he said to...
Will try tomorrow, wish me luck. Lol
Did it work?
And yes, in 2019, Mame is still not working. Can't get anything to work. Whatever rom I try to run, there always seem to be missing files. Retroarch is exactly the same, it does not work. It seems that it works with everyone, except with my computers. There should be a video where someone records from very start to finish, not where everything is already installed.
ok, i think i need a bigger HDD...
i'll bookmark this for later then ^^
For some reason, i downloaded and did everything you said, but it doesn't work. When i open up mame, none of the roms work. Can you anyone help me please? I don't want this to become 60 gb of wasted space
That's a LOT of wasted space that could go to working games.
Please also cover running Softlist CHD console games. I can run PC-Engine Dracula X no problem by simply selecting the game directly from MAME but for some reason Launchbox won’t start it.
vram1974 same here
So is there any benefit to using this over Retroarch? I have that configured and it works great. Kinda hesitant to abandon that. If it ain't broke don't fix it, right?
Wolvie 619 as far as I can tell, it's just a matter of preferring one method and frontend over another. I use Retroarch as well and it would take a lot for me to change my setup now, since it has solved many problems. And MAME runs fine within it. If you're happy, don't worry about it.

Oh thanks!
