    Different kid actors for every movie. Rusty is Anthony Michael Hall and Audrey is Dana Barron; in Christmas Vacation Rusty is Johnny Galecki of the Big Bang Theory and Movie actress Juliette Lewis. The kids are important, but also a bit interchangeable as Clark and Ellen are the main stars/parents.

    Aunt Edna was played by comedy legend Imogene Coca. She was usually partnered with Sid Cesar in early television. She won the second ever female comedy lead Emmy award.

      She suffered a stroke early into shooting and nearly had to be replaced but everyone involved with the production really wanted her and gave her a second chance. She bounced back and was able to make it through, relearning all of her lines and even improvising several scenes including taking a bite out of here sandwich AFTER learning that the dog had peed on it. She was a real pro. The original script had more scenes with her but in consideration of her health they decided to cut a few of them out. RIP Imogene.

    This movie was based upon a National Lampoon Magazine short story called 'Vacation 58' written by John Hughes about a family of five - Dad, Mom, two Daughters and a Son (who gives us the Narration)called the Briswolds (not Griswolds) going on a hellish cross country trip to Disney Land, where nothing but trouble stalks them mile after mile till the get to Disney Land only to find it closed, at this point the mother states there is no God, because if there was they wouln't have been punished every inch of the way for nothing.
    The Dad buys a real gun, takes a map to the stars homes at gun point and vaults over the wall of Walts house killing attack dogs and shooting Walt in the leg before being caught.
    So this is a sanitised, far less dark version of a story wrote in 1979 that I read about four years later.
    Regarding the dog dying, that was put in because it is a bad thing that has been known to happen.
    Lastly about the "Succubus" - Christy Brinkley was a famous model at the time, they wanted to show how crazy a person can get when they taste that extra bit of freedom, of Clark getting out his comfort zone, as you get into this franchise you will see that she is a running gag that will pay off very well in a future sequel.

    Beyond those mentioned below, two big names to point out: Eugene Levy (of SCTV, the AMERICAN PIE movies and SCHITT'S CREEK, amongst dozens of other things) as the car salesman; and the late, great Imogene Coca (Aunt Edna) who you won't know but was hugely important for women in TV comedy as the core woman cast member of Sid Caesar's gargantuan YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS, which got ratings even the biggest shows now would drool over. From YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS, you get the likes of Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner, so much of what we now know as comedy today.

    I'd say it's great that you guys feel that way about adultery and animal cruelty, however I feel the same way about both topics, and I still found both parts hilarious. So I definitely believe that your generation being "softer", has everything to do with it. I'm 43, and grew up with this movie, and there was just a more free attitude towards comedy back then. Like I said, I love dogs and I've never cheated, and absolutely despise people who mistreat animals and/or their partners' trust, but I still laughed at the comedic take, on both issues in this movie.

    One of my favorite road trip movies. I still remember a trip I took over to Pennsylvania from Ohio back in 2003. Everything was going fine until I hit Pittsburgh. Coming out of the Fort Pitt tunnel, my exit was closed, and I got lost in downtown Pittsburgh. After passing the same building a third time, I got back on the freeway and found my way to a Days Inn. I stopped and went to the front desk. The lady at the front desk and the guy she was checking in got a laugh when I said "I know this is going to probably sound strange coming from a guy, but I'm lost." After getting directions and going through parts of Pittsburgh that I never imagined I'd be driving through, I got on US 22 heading east out of town. Only problem was, they were rebuilding the road, and traffic was squeezed into one lane in each direction, moving at about 5 MPH when we were moving. Stopped in traffic, I was literally watching the temperature gage on my dashboard going up. So, I did what we were told in driver's ed: roll down the windows and crank up the heater to draw the heat out of the engine. It worked, but in the middle of August, I was miserable and began screaming Clark's "This is no longer a vacation" rant. Traffic cleared, and then when I got to the B&B that I was staying at, a thunderstorm came through, setting off the tornado sirens. The owner of the B&B had guests come down to her apartment to be near the safety shelter if needed. Thankfully the rain cleared, and the rest of the trip went much more smoothly.

    I had the biggest crush on Dana Barron (Audrey) when this movie came out! Her co-star Anthony Michael Hall (Rusty) also did, as he stated such in some later documentary type media pieces that talked about behind the scenes and the filming trip. Yeah, she was cute. I met a girl similar to her when I was working at Six Flags when I was 16. We rode one of the spinning rides together, and I started to get motion sickness. I was in full panic mode. I was sure I was going to puke all over her. She was pressed up against me by the centrifugal force of the ride. Her head was right below my chin. By some miracle, I managed to hold it in. I was SO relieved. That would have been the ultimate dating nightmare. 🥵

    Some fun facts ... as the Griswalds were leaving Chicago and they cut to the aerial shot of the car on the exit ramp, that is what was used in the opening credits of "Married ... With Children."
    The car salesman was comedian and future "Schitt's Creek" star and co-creator Eugene Levy. Rusty was the debut of Anthony Michael Hall before he would go on to star in "The Breakfast Club" "Sixteen Candles" among others ... The girl in the sportscar was super model and then-wife of Billy Joel, Christie Brinkley.
    The actress with the best line "Yeah, but daddy says I do it the best" was said by a very young Jane Krakowski, who would go on the star in "Ally McBeal," "30 Rock" and the current host of "Name That Tune."

    7. Who didn't love John Candy?
    8. Mr. Walley/Eddie Bracken played the toy store owner in "Home Alone II". Do the rest of the Vacation movies. Especially Christmas Vacation.

    Christmas Vacation is absolutely inferior to the original. Christmas Vacation is more sentimental, which is maybe why people react to it more favorably, but the dark tone of the first film was more in line with National Lampoon, the magazine, which birthed this (it's based on a short story by John Hughes, as is Christmas Vacation) and Animal House.

    • @pleutron
      @pleutron 6 месяцев назад

      inferior? I'd have to disagree. Different. But not inferior. European, imo, is the inferior Vacation movie.

    • @yournamehere6002
      @yournamehere6002 6 месяцев назад

      @@pleutron They're both inferior. The original Christmas Vacation story in National Lampoon was dark. Hughes at that point injected sentiment into his scripts, and this was what for me, makes this weaker than the original.

    I was about Rusty's age when this movie came out. Not gonna lie, I had pretty much his entire wardrobe. From the Izod and OP shirts to the corduroy shorts. He was played by Anthony Michael Hall, who was very popular in this time. He had four big hit movies in a row: Vacation, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Weird Science. He was considered part of 'the Brat Pack' of the 1980s: Emilio Estevez
    Anthony Michael Hall
    Rob Lowe
    Andrew McCarthy
    Demi Moore
    Judd Nelson
    Molly Ringwald
    Ally Sheedy

    This movie came out in the summer of 1983, just about the time my family and I got back from a 4-week trip driving from Columbus, Ohio out to Seattle, down to San Francisco, then back to Ohio. I went to see it with my mother and sister, and we cracked up seeing so many too-familiar experiences. No WallyWorld, and Aunt Edna did not die along the way (although we did stop to visit her), but we could definitely relate to a lot of what we saw.

    Rusty was played by Anthony Michael Hall. He probably isn't in the sequels because he had a busy career in the 1980s. You could probably do a series of reactions of just his movies. I highly recommend _Weird Science_ and _Sixteen Candles._

    "Sorry - we're closed. The moose out front should've told you." NATIONAL LAMPOON'S EUROPEAN VACATION (1985) is the next film in this series. Road Trips just make real memorable vacays. In the sixties our family rented a big motorhome for a month and we lived in that driving all over out west. A few years later we went to Great Britain and rented a car and did hotels/motels. Also, did 5 of the Hawaiian Islands while my dad used Hawaii On $15/Day as the guidebook. Supermodel Christie Brinkley plays the vixen in the red Ferrari (not really a succubus, just temptress).

Just wondering what disastrous events may occur. Especially a vehicle breakdown far from home. That's why I prefer to rent a car.
