When Ed says "We coming to get you, Barbara!" is my favorite Night of the Living Dead reference.
The guys nodding their heads in time at the beginning are people who've just emerged from a North London nightclub where they've been dancing all night on uppers, and so they are both exhausted and shuffling along, and still responding to the music in their heads.
Fun fact: When they see Mary in the garden the original line was "She's so pissed." But because pissed means to be upset in America, they changed it to drunk.
Nice, I always thought that was dubbed, lol
George A.Romero was so impressed with the film, that he gave Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright cameos as zombies in his fourth zombie film Land of the Dead.
And Edgar Wright also did Scott Pilgrim so yes, stylistic choices in both
The man who plays Shaun's step-dad is the actor (Bill Nighy) who plays the head vampire, Viktor, in the "Underworld" series, with Kate Beckinsale.
He also plays Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean
Fun fact during an interview Edgar Wright said that the reason he made Shaun of the Dead was because he wanted to show how the UK would deal with a zombie apocalypse since the UK doesn't have guns like the US instead we have melee weapons and acid
Edit: Also Dianne actually survives the film it was revealed in a behind the scenes interview that Dianne climbed a tree to escape the zombies and after the apocalypse she goes to live with her mum in Birmingham
The notion that a zombie apocalypse would be resolved and wrapped up in that same weekend is a refreshing take.
Where's the fun
Awesome. Thanks for that tidbit👍🏻
goes*
Fun fact.
Facts are sometimes fun
Y'all haven't seen Shaun of the Dead?
Zay brought it up so I had to google it. This film released in 2004. It became illegal to smoke indoors in the UK in 2007.
Never noticed the line "Go live in the shed" was foreshadowing.
Love the homage too. Great reaction!
🎥 💓 🍿
I can vividly remember being able to tell if someone had been to the pub because *everything* would stink of cigarette smoke
Cricket bat, not a paddle
Not only could you rip a cig in a building, you could do it on an airplane too. I really like this comedy duo. I've seen them in a few films. I saw that Paul one with the little Alien! Great reation guys! As always!
And in a Drs office......
The great joke about the other group they pass is that at the time every member is played by a slightly more famous person (from a British TV pov) As if the other film is a little more A list
@14:25: "Now put a knife at the end of that paddle..." LOL. Or, cricket bat, as it is actually called. ;) Love ya work, as always boys.
There are actually references to many classic zombie films in this movie, including "Night of the Living Dead," "Dawn of the Dead," "Day of the Dead," and even more modern movies like "28 Days Later" (e.g. the newscast at the end that says the theory of monkeys spreading the virus has been debunked, just before Liz turns the TV off). "Shaun of the Dead" is basically a love letter to the genre and a constant stream of references and homage moments. There are even references to zombie movie tropes (such as the fact that people in zombie movies never say the word "zombies" and, in this movie, every time someone says "zombie," Shaun snaps at them, "Don't say that word!"). And did you notice the shoutout to the classic "Night of the Living Dead" line, "They're coming to get you, Barbara"? When they're on the phone with Shaun's mom, telling her that they're going to come pick her up, Ed shouts into the phone, "We're coming to get you, Barbara!"
As for why the protagonists (and everyone else) acted less urgently than you guys (believe you) might've, what you have to understand is that (1) it's a comedy, and (2) what they're playing off of here is the stereotype of the British national character. Brits are much more about keeping a stiff upper lip, not showing too much emotion (it's embarrassing), pretending things are fine when they're horrible and just getting on with it. Massive understatement is a key part of lots of British comedy. Also, guns are both controlled and not as big a thing in the UK as they are in America, so it makes perfect sense that many Brits wouldn't be super knowledgeable about firearms and almost definitely wouldn't have any. Their ineptness with the rifle, again, makes perfect sense.
From a writing standpoint, it's a very tight script with almost everything that's said either foreshadowing something that happens later, coming true (though not in the way that it was meant the first time), or being called back. There are few, if any, wasted lines. And then, of course, there's the social commentary all throughout which adds a fun element.
Also, some of the music in this movie is taken directly from Dawn of the Dead. The original Romero zombie films are all great. Unfortunately many reactors onlee see or react to the first one, if they watch them at all.
Bullets in a fire TOTALLY do that. Whst propels the bullet 7s the explosion of the gun powder. If the back is struck, it creates a spark inside to ignite the powder. However, fire works nicely too.
"all takes place in the same world"
Yes--England
So something fun to know Shaun AKA Simon Pegg did a 2 season TV show before Shaun of the Dead called Spaced. It was a over the top comedy about him living with his ex roommate Yvonne from THIS FILM. The premise was they pretended to be a married couple so the landlady would rent the flat to them. So when Yvonne showed up people who watched the show cheered when they saw her have a fun cameo in this show.
Shaun of the Dead is basically Spaced: The Movie, and feels like a bigger budget sequel to the Resident Evil episode of the show when Simon Pegg gets high, plays RE2, and proceeds to see zombies everywhere
I cannot wait for you to do Hot Fuzz. This react was choice.
So fun thing to know if you played the special features on the DVD Diana LIVES! Theres a comic strip style mini video that shows answers to questions and Diana having realized she went into a crowd of Zombies wielding her dead boyfriend's leg decided to run up a tree and stay there for two days. Sadly she also ate part of his leg to survive and after she found out the zombies were taken care of she climbed down the tree and the military rescued her in a survivor sweep She then moved in with her Aunt and is still friends with Shaun and Elizabeth.
You guys should do a reaction to The Return of the Living Dead, one of the greatest zombie movies ever but also pretty damn funny. Really, it is essential zombie viewing, it has punks, zombies, gore and humour, who can ask for more?
I love the fact that Nick Frost was in one of the Christmas specials of "Doctor Who" as Santa!
All of the Cornetto trilogy does a fantastic job of parodying and making tribute to the genre that they are. Love all of them
What makes these movies so rewatchable is Edgar Wrights use of Chekhov's Gun. Everything is a gun even though we don't have them in the uk.
You missed a huge one. When dude said “WE’RE COMING TO GET YOU BARBARA,” is almost a direct line from Night of the Living Dead.
Shaun and Yvonne, Simon and Jessica, had a great comedy show called “Spaced”. You should check that out.
This one deserves multiple rewatches.
Literally everything comes back and it takes a few times to catch it all.
Also, there are some industry jokes because a lot of the actors have worked together before.
All their movies have so many subtle jokes, you have to rewatch to catch them. Great director.
"YOU'VE GOT RED ON YOU!"
Oh Hell Yea! My 2 favorite reactors! Y'all gonna love this one.🍿🍿🍿
I’ve seen this movie so many times. I always stop to watch a reaction. Many quotable lines in this movie my kids and I say to one another. Also, Liz’s bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, at the end of the phone conversation is something my Mom and kids and I have adopted. Fun times.
David's actor Dylan Moran is a brilliant comedian - check out the first couple of episodes of his series "Black Books"!
Also, if they watch enough episodes, they’ll certainly see plenty of familiar faces.
I actually forgot it was the same actor in Black Books. He's so different in that, which shows what a great actor he is. 😃
The context of this movie is its origins as an episode of the British comedy series Spaced in which the characters randomly faced a zombie apocalypse. The episode inspired them to make a movie with some of the same cast/characters and comedy style, which is why it is a comedy first, and has horror just as the setting. So those elements aren't fighting with each other as it isnt meant to be a horror movie, it is a dark and absurdist British comedy that pays tribute to many horror movies including the Romero zombie films and An American Werewolf in London. I've noticed that British reactors tend to get the vibe more than North American reactors which is understandable!
You guys HAVE to check out Tucker and Dale Vs Evil!! Horror comedy at it's finest!! 😊
Oh definitely! Next to this movie it's my favorite horror comedy!
Such a classic! 2004 may have been the greatest year of all time for comedy movies
Great reaction as always! We have family who live in Crouch End, London where this was filmed, we visited Shauns house and the shop where he bought the cornettos and got some nice pics 😊
Great react guys! One of the best NOTLD references was when they’re calling Shaun’s mom to let her know of their intentions to save her and Ed yells “We’re coming to get you Barabara!” To end the scene.
Just wanted to swing by to say thanks Cam n Zay, uploaded my first reaction the other day and it's channels like yours that really inspired me to give it a go!
It's "Corne'o" . This is nostalgia for me, in the pub smoking with your best friend
"What was that?!"
"Who died and made you king of the fucking zombies? Let's see yours."
_Proceeds to do the greatest zombie impersonation of all time_
"Yeah, that is pretty good."
🤣🤣🤣 Two best friends for sure.
30:34 This scene is a direct reference to Day of the Dead, which is a very good movie and absolutely worth your time. It's a sequel to Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, and it also stars the best zombie in the world, Bud.
"Would you do that for me, Cam?"
"...Of coooouuurrsseee..." _I would put you down so fast, Zay._ 🤨
And Cam, you are absolutely not looking too far into it. There were many loving references to Romero's zombie movies. One you missed, and you shouldn't feel bad because George Romero himself missed it, was when Ed said, "We're coming to get you, Barbara!"
"Homage? You're all drunk, it's disgusting!" And that's me paying homage to Life of Brian. :)
Not a paddle sean has its a cricket bat. They are rock hard.
Exactly! Spinal Tap’s manager Ian knew what he was talking about with that, at least. 😄
@@0okamino ahahaha 😂
This film is crammed with jokes and nods to horror. It's a brilliant script where everything ties together and so many little jokes go by unnoticed. You can watchnit over and over. Nuts that it's 20 years old.
Shaun is more than just a zombie spoof, it's a love letter to George A. Romero, the godfather of zombie films. George was the first person outside of the crew that Edgar Wright showed it to.. he loved it so much he put Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in Land of the Dead. There are so many call backs to Night of the Living Dead (68), Dawn of the Dead (78) and Day of the Dead (85).. it's like Romeros Greatest Hits.
37:25 This was more Dawn of the Dead than NOTLD.
such an iconic crew
"We're coming to get you Barbara!"
Shaun of the Dead is a fantastic blend of comedy and horror that pays homage to classic zombie films. For more great zombie flicks, be sure to check out 28 Days Later and Train to Busan.
Juan of the Dead (2010), is another zombie comedy that’s pretty good, but is set in Cuban. It just spoofs on the name of ‘Shaun of the Dead’ - obviously - but it’s quite enjoyable, and fun in it’s own right.
Im so happy you mentioned that movie. I loved that movie. It was so over the top but so enjoyable!
@20:08 that is Jessica Stevenson that starred with Pegg in a UK TV series called Spaced, which was also directed by Edgar Wright. Great show and HIGHLY recommended.
The writer and lead actors had such a huge fan base already but they only had a v small budget for this movie so they put out a casting call to their fans to play all the zombies but for free. As u can see they were inundated with fans wanting to be extras and zombies. Such a great movie.
Funniest Homage ...... Ed yells into the phone and shouts "We're coming to get you, Barbara!" ......... In the original Night Of The Living Dead, in the beginning the guy makes a joke and says "They're coming to get you, Barbara" ...... What an awesome movie and another amazing reaction!
You guys are awesome! Thanks for the laughs and fun!
If you liked this, check out Pegg and Frist's solo films. Pegg did "Run Fatboy, Run", where a slacker has to run a marathon to get his girlfriend back. Frost did "Cuban Fury", in which he has to dust off his dormant salsa dancing skills to win the heart of an American co-worker.
They started their assowith Edgar Wright in the British TV series, "Spaced", which is definitely worth a watch! It had 2 seasons, for a total of 14 episodes.
Nick frost had another British TV show, called "Mr. Sloane", 6 episodes, that you might like.
I loved him in Attack the Block
The bottle caps coming off were fizzy bottles so it's like the gas from the fizz builds up and then the pressure from that forces the lids off. Not sure if heat would cause them to do that or just make the glass explode but either way there would be carnage
Wrights big American film is Baby Driver.
That "paddle" is a Cricket bat sir 😂
I'm sure someone's told you already but Peter Serafinowicz, the actor who played Pete, did the voice of Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace.
20:09 - The actor in this scene, who plays Yvonne's boyfriend, is Martin Freeman who plays Agent Everett Ross in the movie Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Captain America: Civil War.
Yes, he is not known for anything else.
So pleased you're reacting to the cornetto trilogy. 'Shaun of the Dead' really is great but 'Hot Fuzz' is probably my favourite (pay close attention from the very start), but 'The Worlds End' gets better each time I watch it.
Will you spot Edgar Wright's guest appearances in Hot Fuzz I wonder . . . he makes two . . .
@5:22 that's because it's by the same director as Scott Pilgrim vs The World(2010) - Edgar Wright.
Another Night of the Living Dead reference... "Were coming to get you Barbera"... which was "Theyre coming to get you Barbera" in Night
I love this movie! Its filled with loving homages to the Romero Zombie movies. When Ed says "We're coming to get you Barbara" that's from Night of the Living Dead and my favorite tribute. Thanks for doing such a fun movie!
omg i can’t wait to see you do the rest! ♥︎
They were all great. Hot Fuzz was my favorite of the three. If you like Simon Pegg, you should also try Run Fatboy Run, a totally underrated gem.
Love the film. Such a nostalgic film for me. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are a great duo. Director Edgar Wright is great.
Love the cornetto trilogy and the reaction! Also - 08:29 - authenticity does go a long way but it's meaningless long-term without action and changing your ways if you do get stuck in same old patterns. Suprise your partner every now and then with something they'll enjoy!
Being able to smoke in a building is so weird could do it when I went to the casino for the only time😂
Since this relates to a scene in this movie... hey guys... What do you call a wheelchair user in a zombie apocalypse? Meals on Wheels... I can say that because I'm a full time wheelchair user myself 🤣
That line was used in Little Monsters, another zombie comedy that was pretty good.
@@karidennis6154 was it really? I've never seen that and here I thought it was fairly original LOL oh well
@@drewc981 My granddaughter is a wheelchair warrior and she has the same kind of sense of humor as you and I LOVE this! Lol
Ironically Pete saved Ed and Shaun's lives, when he throws Shaun's record out the window you can hear sirens, and since the front door was open if they'd continued playing music all night the zombie hoard would have come for them before morning.
Bill Nighy, who played Phillip, also played Casey Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean!
Davy Jones - Casey Jones was a train driver! 😅
Actually it is Davy Jones
Dawn of the Dead (1979) was my introduction to the franchise and the parody namesake for this movie. It's pretty cheesy, but I love it for the nostalgia.
Bullets have gunpowder in them so yes heat would make them pop.
Hector and the search for happiness is another great movie with Simon Pegg
A nice side quest might be _Fido_ (2006), a Canadian comedy that follows up on the "zombie integration" idea.
I'm going to strongly suggest the Edgar Wright directed Baby Driver as a follow-up installment as well. Completely different cast and setting, but largely in line stylistically and structurally with the Cornetto films.
Thanks to Cameron and Isaiah! 🧟♀ My mother and I both love this one. It's my favorite of Mr. Wright's movies.
Awesome reaction of my favorite movie!!!!😊😊😊😊😊
I have his "I got wood" tee-shirt.
I think if you notice that many people these days walk around looking at their phones, then you can 'not being aware' to believability.
Have you all watched the Childs Play/Chucky franchise? You should! 7 great movies, and there's a tv show that takes after the last movie and is now on its 3rd season. Horror, camp, comedy, drama with amazing cast/characters, and continuous story lines that keep giving! It's iconic.
Paddle? PADDLE?!?...that's a Cricket Bat!🎩
I'm glad you did this one! I would love to see you do Spaceballs or I'm gonna get you Sucka! They are so funny!
Zay totally gives me vibes of David Martinez from Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Maybe you guys could react to that show, it’s a mad hot anime rn.
You must watch the next two movies in this series hot fuzz and the worlds end! The worlds end is my 2nd fav of the trilogy and this is the first
Coming after one of the team gets bitten during Z-Day, the channel rebrand: Cam & Zombay!
You should definitely watch "Spaced"!
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is amazing. It gives you Scott Pilgrim vibes because it’s also directed by Edgar Wright
I'm still trying to figure out where this kid got the notion that guns somehow magically fling bullets around, that the gun provides the power behind the projectile.
Pail which came after the worlds end, It's filled with big names and is really awesome.
Zay, never give Cam sh*t for C-Pain autotune again after that intro.
I am a huge fan of zombie movies. I have been for most of my life. I saw this when it first came out, and despite having watched it dozens of times, I didn't catch the "We are coming to get you, Barbara" tribute until 2020. Not my proudest moment.
A slice of fried gold means something impressive
Yes!!!! Cornetto trilogy is awesome
The characters maks sense to anyone who knows Brits. We are a different species to Yanks.
The guy who played the asshole David is named Dylan Moran, and he's one of the funniest standup comedians I've come across. Absolutely love him to pieces. If you enjoy standup, definitely check out his specials :)
This movie surprised me first time I saw it.
Good movie. Hot Fuzz is one of my favorite Movies of the 2000s. Looking forward to this trilogy with you guys.
There’s a Night of the Living Dead movie in color. One of the best remakes ever
Definitely a funny play on a zombie apocalypse!
Another fun zombie parody is Fido.
U have to do the whole trilogy now also Edgar Wright baby driver is really good and scott pilgrim vs the world
Well since you liked this so much, you'll definitely like the film "Fido". And I might be a bit biased because I worked on the film, but it's pretty great :-)
My favorite movie of all time.
