During that same sit-down, there's also the great little gag where Clark mentions Rusty will "be a man soon" (paraphrased), and Rusty replies something like "I just became one 3 days ago" (again, paraphrased). An obvious reference to his cousin teaching him how to "bop his baloney". That line always got a chuckle outa me!

The movie's original ending, which was scripted but never filmed, was a lot darker as Clark and his family take theme park owner Roy Wally hostage at his house and force him to sing songs. However, a SWAT Team breaks in and they save Wally while Clark and his family end up in jail, but Wally let's them off the hook and tells them that they have been banned from his theme park for life and they must never return to California ever again. The agree and the Griswolds fly back to Chicago.

Vacation is one of my favorite road trip movies. I still remember my first actual vacation/road trip that I went on by myself as an adult over to Pennsylvania back in 2003. My exit in Pittsburgh was closed, and I ended up getting lost in downtown Pittsburgh. After stopping to get directions (this was before I had a cell phone), I got on US 22 heading east out of Pittsburgh. They were widening the road and had it narrowed down to one lane in each direction. I was literally crawling at about 2 miles per hour and watching the temperature gauge on my Grand Am slowly going up because I wasn't moving and couldn't just pull off out of the stop and go traffic. I had to roll my windows down and crank up the heat to draw the heat out of the engine and cool it down. Keep in mind that this is in August. Next thing I know I'm yelling Clark's speech "This is no longer a vacation. It's a quest." Finally, traffic did clear up, and when I got to the B&B that I was staying at, a heavy thunderstorm came through, setting off the town's tornado sirens.

Route 66 is the road with the attractions you mention, and that is the setting of this movie. Before the Eisenhower Interstate program of 1956, it was the longest interstate road in the US, running from Chicago to Los Angeles. It was the "holiday road" from the early Twenties to the early Sixties. Any coast to coast travel was pretty sure to take Route 66 for some length, back in those days. At the time of this movie, the Eighties, it was mostly unused, deserted, and poorly maintained: You would have to be a 'Clark Griswold' to plan your road trip on it.
Nat King Cole wrote and performed the popular song "Route 66" in 1946.
The character "Wally" closely resembles the real life Walt Disney.
"Wally World" became a common nickname for Wal*Mart, used by employees to subtly express their level of job dissatisfaction and their low regard for that company.

    1. FACT: They don't crush cars right away. They will resell them and then sell the parts.
    2. My favorite part is when the ALL fall asleep in the car while it's still rolling. 🤣
    3. There's no way he would have gotten a parking place right in front of the "Long Branch" saloon.
    4. "Bop your baloney"="Spank your monkey"🤣🤣
    5. The guy at the campground is Brian Doyle-Murry (Bill Murry's Brother) and he played Clark's boss in "Christmas Vacation".
    6. He's crazy. I'd take Beverly DeAngelo 😍😋over Christy Brinkley any day.
    7. Who didn't love John Candy?
    8. Mr. Walley played the toy store owner in "Home Alone II". Do the rest of the Vacation movies. Especially Christmas Vacation.

Great video, such a blast of a movie to watch. Mostly watched the TV edit over the years so I always forget about the Audrey Mary jane sub plot. Christmas Vacation would be a great Dec. movie, hopefully it does happen. Clark once again...has a rough time

Hughes originally wrote this as a short story for National Lampoon Magazine. Based on his own experience.

I have been checking RUclips daily for the next video drop from you dudes, super excited that you picked this classic. As another commenter said, hopefully Christmas vacation gets done with the holidays coming up. (Btw don't understand the low view count on the Tremors watch, that's one of your better episodes.) Thanks for the great content dudes, keep it coming!

This was made from a short story written by John Hughes that appeared in The National Lampoon Magazine in 1979. It's dark because of the counter culture nature of the magazine at that time. The screenplay was faithful to the magazine story which, being a print version, could create more outrageous images and leave it up to readers to imagine. Putting the story into visual form makes it more real.

Great movie and one of the classics. Beverley D'angelo plays Clarks wife really well, dealing with the crap she gets dragged through. Smoking hot too!

15:10 this is the kind of moment you just DON'T WANT to experienced.
I imagine the one who's yelling is a person that is especially timid, fearful and doesn't get angry easily (like tari from Smg4). Like the one who is out of his character.
That would be even worse actually.

I’ve always maintained Ellen killed Aunt Edna when he told her to shut up and not move from the car indirectly.
