    Text:
    In the bleak mid-winter
    Frosty wind made moan,
    Earth stood hard as iron,
    Water like a stone;
    Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
    Snow on snow,
    In the bleak mid-winter,
    Long ago.
    Our God, Heav’n cannot hold him
    Nor earth sustain;
    Heav’n and earth shall flee away
    When he comes to reign:
    In the bleak mid-winter
    A stable-place sufficed
    The Lord God Almighty
    Jesus Christ.
    What can I give him,
    Poor as I am?
    If I were a shepherd
    I would bring a lamb,
    If I were a Wise Man
    I would do my part,
    Yet what I can I give him,
    Give my heart.

    I went into town and there was not a carol to be heard. I remember a time when I actually got fed up of hearing carols in every shop and carol singers everywhere. What I would give to go back to those times now.

      I disagree. I can't get enough of traditional European Christmas carols. I hate American hymn tunes. I hate American secular carols even more. I wish I could move to England.

      @@princesskateforthewin me too, I love carols but they don't play them in public anymore in the UK and the town's Xmas lights could be for anything there's nothing Christmassy about them.
      The past few years the amount of lights on some private houses has increased enormously but now with electricity going up 500% - it's almost like it was a deliberate strategy to stop people celebrating Xmas.
      Anyway one of my favourite carols is Three Kings, not We Three Kings. And I love See Amid the Winter Snow and It came upon a midnight clear, and Lullee lulla, my little tiny child - I think that might be the Sussex carol. And quel est c'est odeur agreable. And the little drummer boy, a-rumpapumpum. 😄

      I was delighted to see the wonderful Salvation Army play in my recent visit to London.
      In addition to this, my church has several Carol services and a carol concert this year and this weekend we are going to a carol service in a cave at Castleton in Derbyshire. The opportunity to hear beautiful Christmas carols is still here in England, but we need to see it more on the streets too for sure. It brings the true meaning and Spirit of Christmas into people.

    Forty years ago I sang the last verse of this as a solo in the Primary school choir. We were very poor, often hungry, dirty and wearing Charity shop clothes. I can still remember being surprised by how many of the audience were crying. Now, as an adult I can understand the emotional responses to such powerful words and music and how my situation back then fitted the sentiments so genuinely. After four decades of trying to be good and generous, I am still poor and the one crying because of my understanding and empathy

      You have lived well for 40 years, despite your poverty. I share the same experience.
      But this poem brings me great joy, as does the Christmas story, because the greatest treasure we can have is a relationship with Jesus. And our gift of our heart is worth so much more than great riches, and we receive so much in return from our heavenly father.
      I pray that you will listen to the Carol again, and open your heart to His love and peace and joy.

      @@louisemacardle4216 Thank you for your thoughtful words. I actually made a mistake.....it was fifty years ago! That Christmas we were living in a squalid flat above a shop. The only food in the kitchen was a tub of margarine, tea leaves and a jar of pickled red cabbage. In the way only the innocence and nativity of six year old children can do, me and my sister wrote a letter to God asking him for help. We sellotaped a two and one pence piece to the letter, threw it out of the window and prayed.
      Maybe this year God will get chance to reply

    Best version ever! This was originally called "A Christmas Carol" (sound familiar) by its author, Christina Rosetti, in 1872. While the melody may seem melancholic, this Carol is about hope. The lyrics are loaded with some great theological truths that require additional contemplation. It is not sad, but rather it is solemn. The world was bleak before Christmas . . . not anymore.

    Worship night and day,
    A breastful of milk
    And a mangerful of hay;
    Enough for Him, whom Angels
    Fall down before,
    The ox and ass and camel
    Which adore.
    Angels and Archangels
    May have gathered there,
    Cherubim and seraphim
    Thronged the air;
    But only His Mother
    In her maiden bliss
    Worshipped the Beloved
    With a kiss.
    What can I give Him,
    Poor as I am? -

I am glad Daniel Hyde is taking the choir back in the direction of Boris Ord/Wilcocks/Ledger in terms of tempo and pace.

    To answer bleak midwinters of fear/disease/death... this is exactly why the Son of God took on human nature and was born. Christian Christmas celebrates that God did not ignore us, but looked on us in our sorry state and came to rescue and redeem us. Jesus knew what it was like to be human. There is more than this miserable body and life, there is joy and hope in the resurrection Jesus came to bring. That joy and hope doesn't come from gathering sizes or gifts or comfortable aesthetic traditions, or even from a prolonged life here and now (as if you'd want to live for LONGER this way?). It comes from the holy and transcendant God reconciling you to Himself, and raising you again after this life is over. If you think the message from this song is powerful, wait until you hear about Easter Sunday.
    This song is beautiful, beautifully performed, and a credit to those who pulled it off (I wonder if there were acoustic/reverb challenges to the recording because there were less people in the room? hmmm) Thank you for doing it, and KEEP SINGING. :)

      I think many of the albums recorded in the chapel have been done when it was quite empty. The fine recording engineers at the BBC are among the best in the business and can probably resolve that through skilled microphone placement

    For years I sang the last line of this wrong: "Yet what can I give Him...?" Was it minor dyslexia? Was I scanning the lyrics too quickly so I could drop down to sing the bass line? Then it dawned on me. It isn't a question at all. "Yet what I can I give Him..." is an affirmation. He isn't interested in our tangible treasures. He wants our hearts.

    Some things are just perfect. As a small boy I sang the solo verse of this carol in our church choir. I never really realised or attached much significance to the event at the time. Now as an old man, I believe deeply that if all children lived a similar experience their lives and attitudes to life would be subtlety altered for the better.
