The new Director of Music, Daniel Hyde, has brought a new beauty to this renowned choir: introducing an unrushed tempo which uses silence -- the spaces between notes -- as artfully as the notes themselves.
The voices of Kings College choir make my Christmas and often brings to mind happy days past when my family were hosts to several of the Choristers when my own boys were in our Cathedral choir. Greetings to all fellow appreciative listeners from the far southwest corner of Western Australia..🙏many blessings to you all .Evelyn Taylor-Crowe 2021
Having listened to the piece half a dozen times, I find the poem quite appealing. However, musically, I´m not impressed at all. The piece is lack-lustre and seems to have no direction. I can´t see it becoming a part of the Christmas repertoire. The choir, as usual, delivered the goods well.
I agree. The setting is bland and flat. There's no sense of joy or anticipation in waiting for the birth of the Christ Child. Stillness doesn't have to mean blandness and boredom. The choir sings it beautifully, but even the most beautiful singing can't redeem this uninspired piece.
@Mista G T King's College was founded by King Henry VI in 1441, but the building of the Chapel commenced in 1446. The choir was up and running in 1449. In terms of age King's is not that old, compared to other choir foundations in England. For example Wells Cathedral School was founded in 909, and the one at St Paul's Cathedral was founded in 1123. The English choral tradition is ancient, the oldest in the world.
My husband and I went to an evening service at Kings we sat in those very stalls Those boys were amazing it touched our heartstrings. They never put a note wrong. We felt it was a privilege to be there.Happy Christmas to all hope you are not alone this Christmas keep safe and may god bless you all.
