This past Sunday at Epiphany Mass I heard this hymn for the very first time. How could I have never heard it, since I am age 67? Glorious and majestic! What a beautiful performance to the glory of God!
Christina Rossetti - A Christmas Carol In the bleak mid-winter Frosty wind made moan Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, Snow on snow, In the bleak mid-winter Long ago. Our God, heaven cannot hold Him Nor earth sustain, Heaven and earth shall flee away When He comes to reign: In the bleak mid-winter A stable-place sufficed The Lord God Almighty - Jesus Christ. Enough for Him, whom cherubim Worship night and day, A breastful of milk And a mangerful of hay; Enough for Him, whom Angels Fall down before, The ox and ass and camel Which adore. Angels and Archangels May have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim Thronged the air; But only His Mother In her maiden bliss Worshipped the Beloved With a kiss. What can I give Him, Poor as I am? - If I were a Shepherd I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise Man I would do my part, - Yet what I can I give Him, - Give my heart.
I have repeated the phrase "snow upon snow" a few times recently, unable to remember where it comes from. Then I was led to this video reading something which called it the greatest Christmas carol.
There is one last verse to this which goes " snow snow snow snow snow " to every phrase, and if you start the tune and make the word snow last in one long howl from the beginning of the music to the last not, it brings it alive.
An amazingly beautiful song. I have never heard of it before but here because a friend of mine on SoundCloud posted his wonderful version of it. Thank you for posting!
In the bleak midwinter Frosty wind made moan Earth stood hard as iron Water like a stone Snow had fallen Snow on snow on snow In the bleak midwinter Long, long ago Angels and Arc Angels May have traveled there Cherubim and Seraphim Thronged the air But only his Mother In her maiden bliss Worshiped the beloved With a kiss What can I give him? Poor as I am If I were a shepherd I would give a lamb If I were a wise man I would do my part But what I can I give him Give him my heart Give him my heart

Christina Rossetti - A Christmas Carol
In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter
Long ago.
Our God, heaven cannot hold Him
Nor earth sustain,
Heaven and earth shall flee away
When He comes to reign:
In the bleak mid-winter
A stable-place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty -
Jesus Christ.
Enough for Him, whom cherubim
Worship night and day,
A breastful of milk
And a mangerful of hay;
Enough for Him, whom Angels
Fall down before,
The ox and ass and camel
Which adore.
Angels and Archangels
May have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim
Thronged the air;
But only His Mother
In her maiden bliss
Worshipped the Beloved
With a kiss.
What can I give Him,
Poor as I am? -
If I were a Shepherd
I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man
I would do my part, -
Yet what I can I give Him, -
Give my heart.

This song perfectly describes a typical Canadian winter, which is exactly what it is like outside my window at this very moment
So beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

Notice we never hear great classical carols like this one in all the stupid stores who blast crap for 2 months straight.

Ridiculous key. F sharp major? Why? At least choose G major. Or keep the original F major.
