Man United went on to go out of the Champions league in the group stage that season, they most definitely were struggling.
Massive respect for Ferguson over the years but this was a reaction that reflected that they were indeed, struggling, you'd have thought he'd have faced the question head on the personality he had.

Man Utd's group stage finish preceded before being knocked by Real in the Round of 16 the season after....now they are struggling in Europe & domestically. United were good when they played their heart out on the field...now they have players unworthy of the badge talking about the club being too big to finish fourth etc... talking is done on the field, no club is ever too big to fail. If United remember this they'll start from where they are...not from where they used to be.

Fergie was absolutely struggling in CL that season lol. Got knocked out in the group stage by Basel, Benfica, and Otelul lol. City got bounced in the groups as well.
