    I work really flipping hard - but, over the last year or so I've got a whole lot happier 😀. I've struggled with anxiety and putting myself under way to much pressure a lot in the last few years. But in the last 6 months, I've managed to get way better at enjoying the grind, not wishing time by: relishing life's more mundane moments... at my desk 🖥, chilling with family 🏡, going on a walk 🥾. Stuff I'm trying not to take for granted.
    Stoicism has played a huge part in that. It's a philosophy I've really only discovered in the last year or so, and alongside the pragmatic French philosophers (e.g. Voltaire) I studied about at university, it's given me a much broader perspective on my life. From my 'can't-change-it attitude' to how I make sure I appreciate what I already have, in this video I share my top techniques for being happy 🤗

    Just remember that life is more than a job. Passions, hobbies, relationships... I know that you have to keep image of being perfect etc. BUT do not waste your youth! I understand, some people like their jobs, but that’s only part of the unity, remember it and live to be proud of yourself.

      Life costs too much and the world is in a recession. Put aside 500 a month into an investment plan and grind for now. Your spirit will be crushed but unfortunately most of us don't have a choice.

    Thanks Liam, I really needed this video. I'm a high school senior and I've been stressing out with my classes, scholarships, standardized tests, and college applications, while still having a life. It's just that there are so many expectations from other people that I just forget to take a moment to breath and enjoy my down time.

    its weird because being mentally ill and having ADHD has made me think about this stuff so much and sometimes people are so happy when they hear i'm 'getting better' but when I say I'm better I don't mean I don't struggle still I mean that I actually have addressed a lot of my issues and confronted things that most people never do. and I feel weird because I want everyone to do that but self-reflection, introspection and learning how to improve your life for some reason is limited to people who are "officially" mentally ill, and I think to an extent those who are physically ill/ disabled as well. We have to go through these processes of reflection and acceptance and self-improvement just to survive and not just curl up in a ball forever, and "normal" people don't have to confront themselves in the same way. My advice to everyone no matter how happy or mentally well you think you are is to take your blinkers off and figure out wtf you actually want in life because it's sad constantly having conversations with people who think that being well means surviving and doing rather than actually learning how to be happy and enjoy stuff. And that's not me being preachy or superior - I genuinely just get frustrated having people listen to what I say and then say implicitly or explicitly 'yeah ok great, but that doesn't apply to me because I'M not like THAT'. I don't want to just hop from one thing to the next and constantly feel shit anymore and it's a struggle when it feels like the outside world is telling you that's how you should be happy. (And I won't ramble on about capitalism being a huge part of this lol.)
    Thanks for this video, I've just started watching you and I can see why you're such a good student - it's because you've got that creativity, passion for learning and intelligence combined with self-discipline, hard work and organisational skills. I think most people tend to stick to one or the other and I'm very glad I have the creative passionate side naturally, and am now finally (FINALLY) forcing myself to learn the self-discipline and organisation stuff too, and creators such as you remind me that it is possible to do both! I need to harness the skills my ADHD has given me and manage the issues I have so I can enjoy life and be the person I want to be, and that's a person who doesn't just plod through the tunnel but enjoys all the aspects of life within it :) Also I've been trying to start a youtube channel for a couple of years and I feel hopefully Ill be in a place to start that soon so seeing someone like you who does so much work (like seriously i cannot relate) and also runs such a great channel is very encouraging too!

    This is such a good video! It really has substance, compared to a lot of self help video that are very surface level.
    I have depression and anxiety and appreciating the small things and what I already have has helped tremendously. A small exercise I used to do that helped was writing down every evening all the good things that have happened that day or that I felt grateful for. It was usually stuff like finding a good song, spending time with friends or situations in which I fought my anxiety and small successes or compliments I got. That really helped me focus on the positive side of life. I also practice low expectations. My motto is if I expect the worst, I can only be positively surprised. But you shouldnt overdo your pessimism!
    The most important thing I took from this video is confronting your regrets. Bc of my anxiety I often beat myself up over small things that happened years ago, so I really should try that. Great advice!
    Also the editing of this video is really great!

    I’m currently sitting in a Chick-Fil-A parking lot dreading the fact that I have to go in in 12 minutes. I know that I can’t complain because I’m lucky to even be employed but I know 100% this isn’t what I want to do. Every day at work is a struggle to keep my happiness up and my depression down. It kills me. For the past 2 months, every day I say to myself “god I want to quit so bad”, the next question I ask is “then what do you want to do?” And that answer is music production. It’s just the tunnel. It’s the feeling of being vulnerable. It’s so hard to fight. I hope soon I can drop this fast food gig and really shoot for what I want to do. Thank you for your videos.

    No disrespect bro, I am just genuinely curious. Why does your job take 80 hours a week? Like are you reading 50 contracts straight and the transactions are that complex? You work 16 hours a day assuming a 5 day work week and from an outsider's perspective you are getting ho'ed by your firm bro, stoicism or not that seems excessive.
    What is it that drives you? Lord knows there must be easier means to make money.
    Keep up the great videos!

    • @liam.porritt
      @liam.porritt  3 года назад +7

      I should be clear - the 80 hours is across my job as a trainee lawyer and all the stuff I do working in my business, including making videos 😀 I based it on a 50-hour work week, with 30 hours of my own work around that, which I reckon is on the high side of the average amount I work in a week 🤗

    So, is the point of the video, that we should enjoy our work moment from moment/ live in the moment while working? Not having an end-goal in mind? And therefore we won't feel burnt out, because we enjoyed the time we had at work, insteaf of thinking: I want to do this, I want to do that? Would really appreciate, if someone would give me an answer 😊

    • @internetpotato6734
      @internetpotato6734 3 года назад +1

      Yes and no. I think the main point is focusing on positive things in your life and appreciating what you already have instead of constantly chasing new things. Also dont measure your success by things that you have no control over and kinda chill out about bad things happening to you that you have no control over. Of course that is only possible to a certain degree tho. Personally I think one needs to find balance between living in the moment but also having some sort of goal in your life. I think having no aspirations sucks too lol. But dont let your aspirations cover the good things you already have!

    I’m sure the video is well intended and to motivate others. But for anyone especially people with family history of mental illness this sort of lifestyle is not recommended. I worked 70+ hour weeks for months consecutively a few years back and it was the onset of my anxiety disorder. Life is a lot harder than it used to be and the suffering multiplied tremendously. So yeh you can come out of one 80 hours week smiling but do that consecutively and what that does to your mental health no one can promise is repairable. Society likes to make overworking a virtue because everything that isn’t procrastination and “laziness” must be desirable, but like everything else in life there is always a balance. If you’re reading this and going on these websites you’re likely to be a hardworking conscientious soul looking for ways to increase productiveness, which is also important and all that, but always aim at longevity in productivity.

      Regardless of how you feel you are perpetuating a toxic work culture. Depending on when you do your work 11-16 hour working days are NOT healthy and it should not be encouraged by being happy doing it. You’re extremely privileged to be in the position you’re in but the people watching this video may not be, they may not be in jobs where the grind is remotely satisfying but due to the work culture we’re in now and the current climate people will even feel guilty (for various reasons) by not working as hard/as much as you do in a Week. It’s not healthy, it’s not normal and sharing it on the internet will encourage other people to do it. No matter how eloquently you phrase it, encouraging this for views is even more toxic.
