My dad grew up dirt poor, yet as an adult he was a very successful business man. He often would eat Vienna sausages after his dinner. I once asked him why he liked to eat this cheap stuff and he told me "...because it reminds me of my childhood and where I came from". Good answer Pop!

I don't know how your dad managed to live off this stuff.
It's not super expensive, but it's not exactly dollar store *cheap either*.
I just looked at some identical armour star vienna sausages at safeway, and they're $1.55 for a 4.6oz can, which equals $5.39 PER POUND!
That's definitely not dirt cheap! Even ground pork and beef are cheaper than that!
compare that to an average 1lb package of BAR-S hot dogs which is the cheapest brand of hot dog, is only $3.30
I dunno, maybe it's cheaper in your area.
vienna sausages are not that bad, btw. they have a similar texture to hit dogs, albeit less firm. Think of them as a mushier and more bland version of hot dogs, they're all right in a pinch.

@@angelinadash2396 Well, he grew up in the Great Depression of the 1930's and didn't go beyond the 6th grade when his father put him to work. They were probably easier to get than fresh meats and more than likely much cheaper.

It might not be the best, but it along with Spam are an important long-term meat storage item for those of us who are poorer, on homesteads, or into prepping of any kind. I am WAY out in the country and a bit into prepping. Actually I watch Wolfe Pit so I can see brand reviews of shelf stable products and get a few recipe ideas.
Unfortunately wheat does bad things to my stomach. Which means I can't do a lot of the lower cost canned chilis. (It also causes a lot of other issues like I avoid most breads, pastas, can't stock ramen noodles... So on)
So that leaves Corned Beef as my favorite go to. With Tuna next.
I have to really be in the mood for either Spam or Vienna sausages but I do have some on hand.

Bruhahaha - I am almost 70 years old and we were pretty poor as far as store-bought food went.
The first time I ever saw these little sausages was when i was about 8 years old. I was at a friend's house around lunch time when the mom got out some crackers, mustard and several cans of these little sausages. She opened them up and dumped the contents onto a plate. The sausages smelled pretty good until I looked at them. I got really scared when they asked if I wanted some - I left and ran home. I told my mom about it and she just said ok. I started crying and she asked me what was wrong. I told her they had opened a can of baby wee- wee's and wanted me to eat some!
My mom laughed so hard she was snorting...I had recently been taught how to change my little cousin's diaper and his little penis had looked just like those sausages. LOL
Now everytime I see a can of them or hear about the sausages, I think of my baby cousin and what I had thought those sausages were. Still laughing; however, I can eat them now, but not very often...

Protip, the easiest way to get them out of the can without tearing them up or using a fork is to take your thumb and jam down on the middle one a little bit, then a few of the others, it breaks the seal between them and lubes them up, then you can pull them right out.

I must have ketchup and mustard to eat them. last time I put them over a fire and tasted better.
I get these for free and only reason I have them most of time.
but avid lovers of this eat straight out of can.

The prarie belts were not darker from smoke. They were darker because of the "extractives of paprika" - that is there for coloring.

Prairie Belt sausages also have a very different mouthfeel than the Armour ones. They feel spongier, less dense. Although I love the stuff, I'll readily admit that Prairie Belt is definitely an acquired taste, due to its odd texture and flavor. I imagine it might be a bit hard for some folks to get past the inclusion of skin and organ meats, too. Thanks for making these videos!

I wish someone had the Hormel recipe for homemade Vienna Sausages. They were my favorite brand back in the 60s'. I delivered various small items to Mom and Pop grocery stores and I would not get back home until after 14 hours of work. I would buy two cans of Hormel Vienna Sausages and a fresh loaf of bread after driving and delivering for about seven hours. This would provide all my meals for the day along with a couple of RC sodas and a Payday candy bar I would make my daily purchase at the same store. Sometimes the store owner would not let me pay. She was the best store owner on my route. I was surprised that Hormel stopped making my survival food!

I love your channel. We don't have that much processed food in Austria (at least it seems so) and the strange thing: there are no "vienna sausages" in Vienna - we call them "Frankfurter" and in Germany they are called "Wiener" :D. I am going to check if there is a good quality brand with a long enough shelf life to send it to you.

The Prairie Belt sausage aren’t anything like the used to be decades ago. Back then, the were packed in oil. The sausages were in the can which was filled with oil. Besides the typical small cans, they also sold them in gallon sized cans.

that pretty much takes out the "vienna" out of "vienna sausages".
Well, those canned things do that anyways, as vienna sausage, other than for example fankfurters, aren't sold in glasses or cans with liquids in their home countries.
