Sometimes sequels are good, and sometimes they're great. The Spyderco designed Byrd Cara Cara 2 folding knife is a well-built, great looking follow up that brings fantastic improvements to an already great knife. Changes include a straightened spine in place of the old, unattractive hump that kept many Byrd watchers away (including myself), also a full-flat ground blade for better slicing and great aesthetics. Subtle changes to the handle shape were also made. A new Spyderco-like package announces the great improvements, and cements a closer relationship between the parent and sub-brand. Overall, this is an affordable new knife that has won me over to the brand for good.
Credit goes to thomassmyth65 for the Green handle idea. We'll see if Sal digs it.

    OA length is 8.5" & Blade 3.72" & closed is about 4.77"
It's a bit longer than most EDCs I've used. But, it's lighter than most. It's thin, so I can still get items out of my right pocket easily.
This FRN bi-directional grip is absolutely the best grip I've ever seen on a working knife. I can't believe it's cheaper than G10!
The Bi-Di scale design is revolutionary. Low drag coming out of the pocket. Gorilla-Glue grip in the hand. G10 feels slippery after using this FRN knife.

I carried this knife pretty much daily for 5 months while living in Mexico. I was afraid my knife would eventually get taken away by police etc, so I didn't want to bring an expensive blade. I love it. Paid about $20, and it is worth double. 1/3 the cost of an Endura and arguably better because it has finger choil

I actually think the bird's eye hole is badass. It makes the blade look like a beak. It looks just like those birds in the Dark Crystal! My little bird will protect me.

The Cara Cara2 FRN is an amazing knife for $20 (Amazon). It's my new EDC, main blade. (FRN Meadowlark Rescue rides in my jacket)
Try this experiment with the Byrd FRN grip. Press your thumb hard onto the grip, just above the lanyard hole. Keeping hard down pressure, push your thumb towards the Byrd logo. Now maintain the same pressure and pull your thumb, back down to the lanyard hole.
Yeah, It just about removed your thumbprint! This grip is so non-slip, it's almost dangerous to your skin!

I own a Spyderco Standard with G10, and the Cara Cara 2 FRN.
I've tested both with wet hands and found the FRN is about 4x better.
After wet testing this FRN (bi-directional texture) knife side-by-side my SOGs and Spyerco's (both G10 & FRN) none of them could compare.
The CC2 FRN has been my EDC for almost a year and I'm still lovin it..
Gonna order another one, in case this one gets broke or lost..

The FRN Cara Cara 2 is where it’s at. These are to thick and heavy with that same thin blade. Still cool though and I appreciate the video.. I can watch this stuff all day.

Every spyderco knife I've had has broken in use or the tip broke off while in pocket (that really sucks when trying to dig change out of your pocket) so I like the price point on the byrd line of knives.

Great review man. Gotta love how much knife you get for the money. I remember a couple years ago...trying to find a knife with G10 handles for under $50 was nigh unto impossible. Now Spyderco and Kershaw have a pretty long list of options. Great for us poor college student knife nerds ;-).

@wcropp1 Oh and I forgot to mention--here's another vote for the green scales on the byrd knives, just in case Sal were to see this video. Actually seeing what they'd look like makes it that much more appealing.

I have this model in FRN, and don't really like the feel of the grip, not as nice as my Endura. I'd recommend anyone buying this (and you should) to get it in G10. Spyderco's good heat treatment means this is a very good steel.

The crow 2 is more "spyderco" than the ambitious/persistence/tenacious/resilience.
The design on the budget Spyderco line up is well thought out but the materials are budget and made in china whilst the Crow 2 has superior bd1 and is much better constructed and beefy.

Kick Butt review my friend! Love the photoshop work on the handles for examples (hope you don't mid if I borrow the idea). I buy the Cara Cara 2 in Orange handle for sure. I believe the company calls the thumb hole the "raven" access hole but not sure. Looks like a good EDC. If they do add color handles at a good price, I'm a buyer.

I wouldn't recommend pushing the release and throwing it down b/c I did this on a spyderco stretch and didn't have my index finger in a safe enough position on the handle, and cut myself very badly.

Makes sense to call it the Byrd's Eye. Look at the profile of a bird's skull, even the orbital socket resembles the profile, but not so much as the overall skull profile. Plus, it goes with the name. I don't know why other people want to call it a comet, sure it looks like one with a tail trailing behind it, but it makes no sense when the name is Byrd. This bothers me soo much, we need to spread this, LOL! Maybe Spyderco should weigh in on it.

  • @MrGnarman

***** couple questions, hope you have time for it: I know they're the same steel type, but is the byrd 8cr13 the same as the tenacious 8cr13, or does it seem more like a factory second? also, would you personally say that the g10 is worth the $10 extra? I'm mostly wondering about getting the cc2 because I've found the tenacious isn't quite as lefty-friendly as i'd like. any other suggestions?

A lock back knife will never be as smooth as other lock types like the compression or liner locks just because of the construction with the lock bar putting a large amount of pressure on the rotating part of the blade, just btw

Why can't they make this exact same knife with FRN, having the same backspacer design and full liners?
The FRN version they have is decent but if only they use this same knife and just change out the G10 scales for FRN scales.

I loved my cara cara 2 with stainless handles until one day I was just messing around with the knife and some dead tree bark and stabbed the tree bark then as I pulled the blade out it bent about 20 degrees to the left. Doesn't seem to be a heavy use edc knife to me. Really turned me off to the Byrd branch of Spyderco.
