    Excellent Gareth! Must get some from Aldi later!
    Instead of mayonnaise or salad cream I usually use tartare sauce BUT I cut up corniche gherkins and put in for a bit of oomph. Or sometimes I cut up jalapeños and put in for Xtra oomph.
    I am also with you on your fish philosophy!

    There's a lot of Pollocks talked about white fish. I mean for cods hake, I've haddock nuff about people carping on about it. And if anyone is wondering, no I didn't write this on porpoise. It's just my opinion and I'm not being shellfish. Great review as usual from the codfather!

  • @steveflitton8903

    I think you're right during your summing up at the end. There's very little taste difference between the so called white fish species. By the time it's coated in batter and you've eaten them with your favorite bun, sauces, salads or whatever you'd be stumped to tell them apart. Cod is more expensive than the others so it isn't used in so many fish products these days unless it's stated as so. I've always enjoyed eating battered white fish with a buttered roll.

      I find pollock a bit sweeter than cod. When I make fish finger sandwiches I adapt the mayo for each - capers or a bit of lemon juice added for cod, tomato ketchup added for the meatier tasting haddock, and mayo with a dash of Chinese five spice balances the slight sweetness of pollock.

    As I have said before. Pollock is a member of the Cod genus, so they are similar in texture but Cod has the strongest flavour. Coming from a fish monger family, I think Pollock is very underrated. I can't really think of a fish I don't like, except maybe Basa and that's mainly down to where they come from, which is usually from highly polluted rivers like the Mekong. British fishing areas have been over fished by EU trawlers since the 70's they tend to use beam trawling methods which rip up the sea bed and destroy breeding grounds. You only need to look at how many fishing fleets have given up due to costs.
    Anyway back to these fish burgers. I like the look of them, they are a good size and the batter looks really to my liking. Hopefully people realise that beer isn't added to flavour the batter, it's just added to aerate the batter. The fact they are not proper fillets doesn't bother me, as long as they are well filled. A new item goes onto my shopping list. 👌👌👍👍👌👌.

    These fish burgers are very good. There's a choice between beer battered, tempura, and southern fried. My favourite is the tempura, but they are all good. Pollock is a sustainable fish and we should badger chippies to sell it alongside cod and haddock.
    EDIT: I forgot that these burgers are also available with a buttermilk batter.

    • @SuperLittleTyke
      @SuperLittleTyke Год назад

      @@exileinderby51 But now, with prices of fried cod or haddock being what they are, chippies might try again to push pollock. I'm sure they could knock 2 quid off the price of fish & chips, maybe even £2.50. I now pay £9 for cod & chips locally, no mushy peas. £6.50 instead could attract pensioners and others on low income back into the fish & chip shops.

    • @SuperLittleTyke
      @SuperLittleTyke Год назад +1

      @@robertsmelt6638 What was the response? Perhaps customers are afraid that some chippies might pass off pollock as cod. Chippies need to be quite open about it. Make a point of advertising pollock as an alternative to cod or haddock, and ensure it's really fresh and fried nicely. But let customers choose the more expensive fish if they want to. As soon as customers try pollock, they will come back. After all, Gareth often reviews Alaskan pollock in the form of fillets, burgers or fingers and he always gives a thumbs up taste-wise.

    Great video Gareth , and on point about the different fish . The frozen pollock you'll find they vary with the seasons , sometimes you get thicker fillets but less or more of the thinner fillets, so there's no set size . Next time you use them fillet burgers ; Put some wasabi mayo with some capers on a bun base , ( optional cheese slice ) then some rocket leaf , sprinkle smoked paprika on the fillet and a squeeze of lemon juice . Those big punchy flavours sing out with the fillet and easy on the calories , and you have an award winning sandwich 😋 .

    Another great review Gareth. They look great cooked. Lovely crispy batter. Totally agree with your summing up statement. When you’re battering a fillet of fish, seasoning, putting it between bread and adding condiments then the purity of the fish taste disappears so battered pollock bap isn’t going to taste the same as say, a steamed fillet. Personally, haddock or hake are my favourite out of the cod family but all these fish are quite bland anyway which is why they go with strong flavours. Quite thought provoking too. Love salad cream! I’d get a slice of processed burger cheese on that bad boy mate. And I’d have top bun ketchup and bottom bun some kind of mayo, tartare or salad cream! Enjoy the weekend everyone.

    For the price pollock is a good and cheaper alternative to cod. Not as tasty but with a bit of tartar sauce makes a nice snack.

    good vid again Gareth, prefer Cod or Dover Sole, occasionally Haddock but Pollock, no, it should begin with a B not a P

    I really like those, I put plastic cheese and tartare sauce in the bun and it’s as good, if not better than a fillet o fish and a fraction of the cost😉

    They looked great! You can't beat _proper_ fish and chips, but the prices at some places (like that gaff in The Lakes) has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. It was good of you to review the inexpensive chippy as well (I won't say cheap, because there's a world of difference between _"cheap"_ and inexpensive - if you get what I mean).
    They way things are going, you'll need to pay in real gold doubloons for a fish supper soon! These fish burgers will make for an _inexpensive_ "Take In".
    Keep up the great work mate, God bless. 👍

    I've been buying Youngs fish burgers for ages ..I'll try these .. but try this in your bun with the fish burger ,, a bit of shredded lettuce , tartar sauce and a slice of processed cheese and you've got a McDonald's Filet o Fish 😋

    Hi BFG - can't beat a bit of tartare but also go balls in and use some ceaser sauce which has a hint of italian cheese - it aint easy being cheesy but this does work well with fish.

    Gareth, mate, you like tartare, sour cream, and chilli sauce. You have to mix a tablespoon of each and taste it. I did NICE 🎉
