Man... everything went great until last crossbar. 2 of the holes for the bolts started spinning with the bolts so I could no longer tighten or back out the bolts. They are both for one side of the crossbar attachment. The 2 on the opposite side tightened just fine. I always thought there could be a chance that the bolt strips but didn't think the connector in the hole would be the problem. Not even sure how to address this as I don't want to return everything and start over.
Oh wow, yes it sounds like the welded nut on the inside of the housing broke off. All is not lost! I have a few ideas. If there is enough of a gap you can hack saw the bolt in half and let it fall on the inside, even if you can't hack saw the bolt you could drill out the head. But then use an expansion bolt instead which is a bolt that will expand inside and tighten it up good. Another option is you can leave those 2 bolts in place and then drive some self tapping screws in between the 2 bolts though it won't be pretty.
@@CarolinaCowboys I called the dealer I purchased from and they said bring it in to show them. I'm going to try that first and maybe a technician can help. @@CarolinaCowboys thanks for the response. This will be a van that we bring to Germany with us for our next assignment and will travel all over Europe. I just want to make sure we have something reliable.
OEM is usually high quality and guaranteed to fit right. I usually haul a lot of weight on top and the worst thing that could happen is something fails and everything goes flying off the back. I would suggest buying the OEM rack and bars then add a Kayak roof mount which will connect to the bars.
can you tell me how far apart the 2 crossbars are? i'm needing them on my 2020 Odyssey & i already have a Thule carrier so i want to make sure it will fit onto the crossbars
@@CarolinaCowboys i have another question for you. my now 2 month old Odyssey seems to have a tire pressure problem. i am constantly putting air in the tires to keep them at 35 psi. as quickly as a day after adding air, the pressure will be down by 2-3 psi just sitting in the driveway. one day it was up by 3 psi just while sitting in the driveway. the dealer service rep told me it's due to the outside temperature fluctuations we have been having. have you experienced this issue?
@@usbatica23 Your tire pressure will go down alot when the seasons change and it starts getting cold outside. Just make sure you're airing them up when the tires are cold and not warm or they'll go down again.
Very helpful, thanks. The biggest pain was taking off the part of the blue tape under the rail at the end. Recommend removing that right after the center supports are installed.
This is a fantastic video, well prepared and well produced. Thank you for making it. Do you know if the 2022 odyssey roof rails and cross bars are the same as the 2018-2020 ones? thanks.
Hi, thanks for the comment, wow I can't believe the 2022 is already out, it looks identical to the 2021 model so it may work, but I haven't seen any of the documentation updated yet to know for sure.
@@CarolinaCowboys 21 and 22 are the same. I believe the only difference is the vacuum delete on the 22. Honda had some vac supplier issues in early 21 so they just deleted that option and called it a 22! That's why 22's were available in Jan '21. LOL
I don't usually miss details like these, but I completely missed that our 2020 Odyssey didn't come with roof rails. What kind of minivan doesn't have roof rails? That's a requirement! Looks like I'll be headed down the same path as you.

Hi Jeff, I found the kits on Amazon with the links I put in the description as well as on Ebay which was a little bit more risk. I ended up buying mine from ebay but I didn't like how they threw everything in one box scratching things up. If I did it again I would order them separately on Amazon.

FYI the installation is the same for the Odyssey 2011-2020, I cannot confirm if the roof rails have the same fitment, but the installation is the same.
So far it's been great, we've already been on a few trips. The top things I like are the 10 speed transmission which helps on the long trips when you're going over hills it doesn't shake the whole van when downshifting, and the brakes are way better than previous years.
Thanks! I ended up using tin snips also b/c of your comment. Took 1hr on the first side, then 45mins on the 2nd. Didn't use a tape measure on 2nd side either. Just placed the trim next to the mounting bolts and cut about 1" on either side. Really easy once you install the first side - you see what you're playing with. Tip for using tin snips: cut the bottom metal first, then bend it up and cut the top. This avoids smashing the channel.
well right now I have learned that the tailgate control module is fried and it might be water damage. It lives kind of down gradient from the roof channel on the drivers side and I had Honda stealership install the roof rack. I’m suspicious that the stealership installer damaged the sealant in that channel and water is getting inside. It’s a disgusting mess and I’m pretty unhappy.
Have you started looking for wet spots? It could be as simple as weather stripping. Or if they caused an issue, they may have drilled a hole in your roof, maybe they stripped one of the OEM holes, the only way to know is to take the roof rails back off to see.
I think you're still going to want to use it. Part of the issue is putting too much weight in the very back creates a weight distribution issue for vehicle handing, as well as very uneven wear on your rear tires.
It was definitely a bigger project than I anticipated. You might still be better off ordering the parts and paying a mechanic to do the install for you vs the dealership. Here's the links amzn.to/2UtiBaQ and amzn.to/3cOseaj

Thanks! Here's links to the parts crossbars (2018-2020) - amzn.to/2UtiBaQ and roof rails (2018-2020) - amzn.to/3cOseaj
Carolina Cowboys thank you very much!
nice video! just curious why you don't like after market racks? I am look to haul kayaks...what do you recommend? thanks
OEM is usually high quality and guaranteed to fit right. I usually haul a lot of weight on top and the worst thing that could happen is something fails and everything goes flying off the back. I would suggest buying the OEM rack and bars then add a Kayak roof mount which will connect to the bars.
Hello, quick question for you. What should the distance between the rails be? I have a cross bar as well but I don't know if it will fit. Thank you
Everything is pre-drilled so make sure you are buying the OEM ones or it won't work.
can you tell me how far apart the 2 crossbars are? i'm needing them on my 2020 Odyssey & i already have a Thule carrier so i want to make sure it will fit onto the crossbars
They are 29" to center of each bar. It seems there's a standard for all vehicles.
@@CarolinaCowboys even the dealer couldn't tell me that info! LOL! thanks!
The description of the kit says it is to fit a 2018-2019 van, has anyone had any issues with the install being on a 2020?
It's the same 2018-2021
Awesome video! Did the rails add any wind noise?
Not wind noise that I can hear but they do add drag so you'll take a small MPG hit
Very helpful, thanks. The biggest pain was taking off the part of the blue tape under the rail at the end. Recommend removing that right after the center supports are installed.
Great tip!
LOL
Why doesnt honda just ship it with the piecess pre cur?
I guess to keep the price down, or allow the dealership to charge more for installation
Great video
Thanks!
I don't usually miss details like these, but I completely missed that our 2020 Odyssey didn't come with roof rails. What kind of minivan doesn't have roof rails? That's a requirement! Looks like I'll be headed down the same path as you.
You could argue it's because of fuel economy, but you could also argue it's a way for them to offer less and keep the same pricepoint.
Did the torx botls to attach the cross bars come in the package? I am missing those so wondering if you bought those separately?
Doh! Nevermind. They were hiding behind some styrofoam... Thanks for the detailed video.
Good to hear
Awesome video sir! Quick question, did the cuts give you more than enough trim for adjustments as far as in tucking it under the plastic?
Yes if you go to the section of the video where I'm cutting you will see how much extra I had
@@CarolinaCowboys thanks so much!
Hi.. Loved the video.. What color is your odyssey?
It's Lunar Silver Metallic
Thank you!
You're welcome!
How much that cost you for the roof rails?
I paid $415 for a kit with both rails and crossbars. I included links in the video description but they are hard to come by right now.
Can I ask you where you found the entire kit where together like that or, did you buy both main rails and cross rails at the same time so they just placed everything in the same box? Great vid and thank you so much for taking time out to do it at the risk of rude public comments, I found this to be helpful and informative so again, thanks so much for your efforts.
Hi Jeff, I found the kits on Amazon with the links I put in the description as well as on Ebay which was a little bit more risk. I ended up buying mine from ebay but I didn't like how they threw everything in one box scratching things up. If I did it again I would order them separately on Amazon.
I'm considering buying an Odyssey and was curious about adding the roof rails. Great video, super helpful. Do you like the van, any issues?
So far the van has been great. The brakes are the biggest improvement.
The roof rails are a must for long trips to carry more cargo.
hi there i loved you movies , i like jazz too. i m jazz guy too)). would you help me to buy all part i m trying to check in ebay they looks like selling one by one parts , i want prity much all together. where i can buy it . i have 2012 honda odyssey. thanks.
Here you go for the 2012 amzn.to/2Ut3nCu and amzn.to/37eVIgm
FYI the installation is the same for the Odyssey 2011-2020, I cannot confirm if the roof rails have the same fitment, but the installation is the same.
The rails should be standard from the manufacturer.
Chrysler got that and the stow and go seats right
If only they could get the reliability right
thanks
Welcome
Great video! How are you liking your van so far? We are in the market and looking at an odyssey elite.
So far it's been great, we've already been on a few trips. The top things I like are the 10 speed transmission which helps on the long trips when you're going over hills it doesn't shake the whole van when downshifting, and the brakes are way better than previous years.
I would buy chrome ones
Would you be worried about it being scratched by things you put on top of the van?
Were you paid by Honda to make it seem difficult? I did it without instructions 30 min each side with some tin snips.
Can you come help me with my projects?

@@CarolinaCowboys Thanks Again
Good Job thank for the video that simplified a lot of things :)
You're welcome!
well right now I have learned that the tailgate control module is fried and it might be water damage.
The sneeze 😂
At least somebody watches my videos :-)
nice job but personally I think is not worth it ... dealer install it for about 250.00 no hassle
$250 is money I can spend on something else
My hope is that we won’t need our Yakima once we’re in our Odyssey.
I think you're still going to want to use it. Part of the issue is putting too much weight in the very back creates a weight distribution issue for vehicle handing, as well as very uneven wear on your rear tires.
$660 for labor. Ugghhh! I wish I had seen this video first!
Bummer!
Hmm I’m going to let them do it for the money. I’ll screw it up.
It was definitely a bigger project than I anticipated. You might still be better off ordering the parts and paying a mechanic to do the install for you vs the dealership. Here's the links amzn.to/2UtiBaQ and amzn.to/3cOseaj
Honda could have made this 100x easier by including pre cut pieces in the kit...but no...why make it easy?
That's true, but then they would have charged even more for the kit
Jesus christ that is involved for a common accessory.
It wasn't too bad :-)
@@CarolinaCowboys I'm about to do it on my 24 Odyssey. My 21 Highlander was a piece of cake by comparison.
Just show us and spare us the acting.
But I like to tell stories
nice job!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Damn you rock. I just got my 2020 EX-L. going to do the same. Thanks for your video!
Good to hear!
