I know you mostly do gameplay videos but I truly appreciate the effort you take to talk through the kinds of things that will elevate a person's play. You make it easy to think deeper about this beautiful game ✌️
Great adaptation for MtGO lag. I for one would love more videos like this one, maybe dedicated primers for some top decks. Both for playing as and against it.
Even though I don't actually play MTGO at all myself, this video is a great change of pace but also to break things down. Which even seasoned players could use refreshers when it seems like just yesterday Psychic Frog and Vexing Bauble got banned. Please do more of these in-depth looks at decks when this video couldn't have gotten too long (SUPER informative) and there's still a bunch of decks you could go deeper into. Example being Delver is usually people's go-to after a format is changed a lot, so more time on that would be great, as well as looking at how some decks that were unplayable before the bannings that could stand a chance now. Point with that last bit is give us your expertise when I don't even think the mighty Bosh N Roll could do as good of a job with a video of these types. And speaking for myself and a few others, please do not get into Cube when that makes me as interested as hearing about the newest cards for Pokemon TCG (haven't played it in literally over 20 years and never going back, for context).
I think having a "state of the format" perspective every once in a while is a good idea for helping new players into legacy. Especially coming from someone like yourself, with so much perspective and insight into the format. I don't know the optimal frequency to post videos like this, but I think it's something that you should post semi-regularly. Maybe once a quarter or once a year. I appreciate your insights and look forward to playing some OOPS! All Spells! In the near future!
Commenting for the algorithm - I like hearing your in-depth thoughts about the state of the format and how the meta has evolved, and why some decks are doing better than others!
You're very good at simplifying and explaining things (probably because you're a teacher), but it's a very valuable asset to the legacy community. You should make videos like this, but supplementary like weekends and stuff.
Catching up on some videos, I definitely enjoy these sorts of more analytic videos. They can make it easier to follow what happens in your gameplay videos also.
I liked this video because it helped me change how I think about cards as I see them in games as well as how to actually go about building my decks from a different angle.
Awesome content as always, Phil! I really enjoyed this one. Don’t get me wrong, I can sit and watch online legacy play all day long, but this kind of content is equally edifying and enjoyable!
I kinda like this meta in a way... Yes it's combo heavy, but decks wax and wane in popularity and playability quite often. There is a tension that isn't broken yet, there isn't a clear "winner" of the race, the moment one deck gets better than the others, most decks will prepare for it and it gets back into the average top tier decks. It can be tedious as there are more good decks than there are sideboard slots, and while graveyard is still quite good, you can't prepare for everything. You have to analyze the meta and adjust quickly, or just assume there will be decks you can't deal with and you just hope to get lucky. I understand many people don't like incertitude, but it's one type of meta that I like, where it's not always the same things that are always good and you can play it, try to prey upon it, just die, or don't play at all (Scaminator era was the worst...).
To answer creatures and oops at the same time, it seems counterspells and discard are the most clear path, and that may explain why tempo skews dimir. Red Stompy gets t1 moons or chalices. Are there no good green or white such tools, which work in both matchups? I think of Thalia, but she's felt too slow for a while.
It's not like there are no tools, but the tools tend to be more narrow or slower. Rest in Peace, for example, is VERY powerful in the current metagame, but it is much slower than a Leyline of the Void. Many of the hatebears come down at 2 mana, giving opposing combo decks an opportunity to go off before they matter. Collector Ouphe is one of the best green anti-combo cards.
I've been wondering for a while how much play Mana Drain would even see in Legacy if it were unbanned. Especially with the context of Timeless existing as a 4x Mana Drain format.
Pretty much every deck mentioned: "Yeah guys this deck is pretty good right now, be ready for it" The 2 minutes in which Phil talks about Aether Vial: "Yeah mate this ain't it" 💔
Hey Phil! Been watching you for a long time. Just wanted to give you a heads up about the members-only videos: I haven't watched almost any of your most recent videos as youtube is only pushing me the videos when they are available for members only, and then i never see them again. I had to actively search out this video to send this message.
Obviously stopping viewers wasn't your intent, and this may make more sense for you still as a content creator as my views bring in less money than someone purchasing a membership, but I wanted to give you a heads up about what RUclips is doing with your end-user experience.
Thanks so much for the deep dive! I haven’t had a chance to play much since the bans, so this has been super insightful. Any thoughts on painter right now?
Im curious if a Naya control style of deck would be decent in the meta game. Between forth erolingas and a lands like shell with valakut it seems possible
I do have a question about analytics. Does RUclips know when a video is shared and do you get "credit " for them or is sharing only in hopes the recipient will watch? If you get algorithm points for simply sharing I have some accounts and chats I can start spamming for you
I'd say if you think people will want to watch the video, go ahead and share; don't feel like you need to do it for my analytics- likes and comments go further.
I'm wondering for combo decks do you think that veil of summer is positioned decently to protect combos (doomsday ) currently to be worth the green splash? Or does the prevalence of consign to memory/stifle outweigh the other stuff it protects against?
I know you mostly do gameplay videos but I truly appreciate the effort you take to talk through the kinds of things that will elevate a person's play. You make it easy to think deeper about this beautiful game ✌️
Thanks for the kind words. Hope life is treating you well!
If anything, I wish these guides were longer!
Great adaptation for MtGO lag.

I always like to have these videos, because it gives an easy entry point for those who are interested in checking out the Legacy Format.
I liked this type of video. I bought several cards immediately after watching this. More please.

Appreciate the deep dive as a person who doesnt know legacy too well, so that i can enjoy your normal gameplay videos even more.
Commenting for the algorithm - I like hearing your in-depth thoughts about the state of the format and how the meta has evolved, and why some decks are doing better than others!
I love these videos! Legacy is my favorite format and I don't get to play it as often as I'd like. These really help me stay up to date on the format.
Love these videos phil..would love to see these regularly..appreciate you sharing your knowledge..
Fun change of pace and i appreciate the insight.
You're very good at simplifying and explaining things (probably because you're a teacher), but it's a very valuable asset to the legacy community. You should make videos like this, but supplementary like weekends and stuff.
I was so excited about this video I had to wait a few days until I could 100% focus on it.
Catching up on some videos, I definitely enjoy these sorts of more analytic videos. They can make it easier to follow what happens in your gameplay videos also.
I liked this video because it helped me change how I think about cards as I see them in games as well as how to actually go about building my decks from a different angle.
This is GREAT CONTENT. please please please keep doing it!
I love these kinds of "perspective" videos. It's fascinating.
Awesome content as always, Phil! I really enjoyed this one. Don’t get me wrong, I can sit and watch online legacy play all day long, but this kind of content is equally edifying and enjoyable!
I love a good Phil yapping about Legacy in general video (and yes I also listen to eternal glory). ❤
Yes ! More video like this ! More guide ! Moar knowledge!
Appreciate the deep dive. Here’s hoping control gets some tools this year… but no horizons and UB sets being standard, we might be waiting a while
Phil rambles about legacy theory is my favorite part of this channel
Amazing, thanks! :)
I like videos like these both for current knowledge and as historical record.
Great Video thanks
I enjoy the talking content, good stuff.
Very useful!

@@ThrabenUniversityAh, I follow your point about how the speeding up of the format is directly the problem way more now, thanks!
Legacy is so fast, Daze is arguably better than mana drain (even with no mana burn) :)
I've been wondering for a while how much play Mana Drain would even see in Legacy if it were unbanned. Especially with the context of Timeless existing as a 4x Mana Drain format.
Need one of these monthly!
Pretty much every deck mentioned: "Yeah guys this deck is pretty good right now, be ready for it"
The 2 minutes in which Phil talks about Aether Vial: "Yeah mate this ain't it"
💔
Yes more of these!
haven't been following legacy as much since wotc lost their minds but this is a nice catch-up. good job.
To be honest... I like this kind of content time to time.
I love meta game discussion a great deal.

Budget Legacy Players rise up! Now is the time for Manaless Dredge!
Thanks so much for the deep dive! I haven’t had a chance to play much since the bans, so this has been super insightful. Any thoughts on painter right now?

@ThrabenUniversity more words and thumbs roger
any vids for newbies to mtg looking to understand and start legacy?
I would take one of these a month for sure!!!!!
I'm wondering for combo decks do you think that veil of summer is positioned decently to protect combos (doomsday ) currently to be worth the green splash? Or does the prevalence of consign to memory/stifle outweigh the other stuff it protects against?
I have not been overly impressed by Veil, generally speaking.
Hey phil, what do you think of gonti's machinations for a mardu energy shell?
It feels like it is a weak stand-alone card compared to things the decks could be running.
@ThrabenUniversity i wasnt sure if fetch lands and natural game progression would make it viable enough as a stand alone
Comment to poke the algorithm.
Is lands basically an unplayable deck right now because of Sowing Mycospawn?
Uh, well I keep playing it... Generally speaking though, yeah, Sowing Mycospawn is putting a lot of pressure on control and other slow strategies.
@ As an avid lands and Modern Amulet Titan enjoyer, that makes me big sad . Hope mycospawn gets banned!
bump for algo
Lol why is the deck called "Dragon Stompy" but it has no dragons in it???
Tradition, as eons ago the deck used to finish with Rakdos Pit Dragon. I tend to call it Moon Stompy personally.
Phil, great video in general.
But please use addon dark reader on those websites. My eyes were burned with the brightness :D
