  • Kiowa Warrior helicopters of the 1-6 Cavalry Regiment, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, completed their final mission flight June 12 in the skies over the Big Red One's annual Victory Run. As more than 10,000 "Big Red One" and Fort Riley troops participated in the 2015 Victory Week event, 25 OH-58 Kiowa Warrior helicopters flew in formation overhead.
    "I've been flying this since 1999, so for me in my Army career, this is the machine that gets me to the battlefield," said Lt. Col. Andrew Beyer, 1st Sqdn., 6th Cav. Regt., commander, "and this is the machine that I've come to know and love and trust. As much as there's sadness about the aircraft going away, you know, while we acknowledge that, this is a transition."
    This was the Kiowa Warriors' last mission flight at the post and marks a historic change in the U.S. Army's aviation arsenal. Officials announced last year Kiowa Warriors' duties would be assumed by the AH-64 Apache after serving as the Army’s primary aerial scout reconnaissance aircraft.
    Crew members from the 1-6 Cavalry Regiment, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, partnered with the Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard recently at a Fort Riley training range to take a photo honoring the past and present cavalry. Kiowa Warrior helicopters, the squadron's primary airframe, are set for inactivation this summer as the Army transfers the Kiowa Warriors' mission to Apache helicopters.
    “It’s only going to be a memory or in the history books or in the museums that people are even able to see this airframe and know the role it played,” said Command Sgt. Maj. James Milhorn, the squadron's senior noncommissioned officer. “The pictures that we took today were not significant for this unit, but for all cavalry units that are divesting their Kiowa Warriors.”

    My time in T/F 118, 4/17 & 4/2 CAR, the first unit to receive the OH-58D & the only over-water Calvary unit in the Army taught me a lot. To see these aircraft retired hurts my heart as much as when the Army retired the Cobra and the Huey

    70 kiowa in Greece from USA in perfect condition!....they can combine with "Apache" helicopters and work efficiently.Αre small and fast, easily camouflaged in the territory of Greece or among the thousands of islands...In cooperation with helicopters Apache can help a lot I think

    I asked Fort Riley and the state of Kansas, when I lived at Topeka >1954-2001< that they put a concrete RED ONE on the hill where they put a gun instead. In the video UC I=70 Eastbound and the hill is just to the right of the interstate. When Eisenhower went to California when he was very young, and they drove on the planks to go across sand he was amazed. The during WW-II he saw the German Autobahn and when he was President he used the MILITARY PREPAREDNESS to get the Interstate in. In Kansas the obverpasses on I-70 and 405 were to low to allow the trucks with the Atlas Missile to go under so they were removed and raised. In Topeka they did not put an overpass for west 25th street so this was done, and brough the people west of 405 into the city and they had addresses changed. You can search PLANKS ON SAND ROAD and something my pop up here on youtube

    This was so freaking wrong! Still so angry beyond my ability to express. Sincerely hope whoever decided this suffers from the same level of stupidity for the rest of their lives!

      You do realize the apache is far more superior to the kiowa in every way. As with all technology it only gets better no matter how cool the kiowa is it is still outperformed in every way with the apache. Not only that but our men and women protecting us deserve the best tool so that they can all come home safe in the end. Thats what its all about

      @@Dravira its also insanely more expensive to maintain. no one is doubting the apache as being better. but the kiowa is more maneuverable. cheaper to start up and run. its quieter and can loiter over an area for forever. it has the same image sensors as the apache, mounted in a superior position. you dont always need 'the best' thing when someone calls for help. the kiowa was more than amazing at what it did.

      Kyle Brehm you cant deny the amount of ordinance difference between the two. Kiowa cant carry what the apache can or even fly as fast and when seconds count thats a big deal

    • @50shadesofcerakote
      @50shadesofcerakote 4 года назад

      @@Dravira yeah its faster, but its got a longer start up process too.. dual engines takes some time. and its super rare for an apache to send off all 16 hellfires.. the army should have never retired the kiowa. they should have put both into service and use apaches accordingly.
      why do you think the army/air force is looking into light attack planes? because the A-10 is overkill for 90% of the calls it goes on. its just not cost effective in the long run. theyre not gonna retire the A-10 cause it still has its place, but it just does to much for to insignificant of a threat.

      Kyle Brehm well i guess we all have our opinions and the a10 is going nowhere thats a different story entirely. I know a ton about those and know for a fact they didnt replace it with the f35 for two reasons, its a cas monster and when the enemy hears it they usually disperse out of fear from its unique sound. Thats old news saying its going away mark my words as fact its gonna be here for a long while still. Do your homework first before making assumptions like that, hell call the military and find put for yourself if you dont believe the countless publications backing up what I am saying to be fact.
