Let's Fly Around realMYST: Part 1 - Myst Island

  • WARNING: If you're happy to believe that realMYST provides a consistent, fully rendered 3D model of the Ages of Myst, then do not watch this video.
    If, however, you would prefer to explore how the 3D engine really works and journey around Myst in ways you never thought possible, then you just might enjoy what this presentation has to offer. (Disclaimer: the explanations in the video come from someone just learning by playing around in the game; I have no experience in programming a 3D environment. Hence, all the layman terms like "portal" and "universe", I don't know what the technical terms are.)
    If you wish to try these hacks on your own copy of realMYST, you will need to save this file to your realMYST INIT folder and follow the instructions laid out in the video (let me know if the link is broken):
    pastebin.com/WCGMYiH1
    I'd first back up the files in the INIT folder before changing any of them.

    It's always really strange, and even slightly unsettling, when you see something as surreal as Myst exposed to just be a game. You just get so immersed in the world that things that expose it for what it really is just seem incredibly jarring, I suppose.
    Glitches in video games have always been very eerie to me, if not downright frightening, especially falling through worlds or walking out to endless ocean. Yet, somehow, they're also incredibly interesting to me, despite being terrified of them as a child. I'd absolutely love to see more of this.

      I remember playing the first Super Mario Brothers, and discovering the glitches as a child.
      Not knowing anything about programming I had no concept of these being just unintended consequences of the code, I thought the extra areas like level -1 you could access in the game really might have had some mystery, and I found that enthralling.
      Looking back on it I find that funny, but also sadly the mystery is gone. In some sense perhaps that is bound to being child at that time, with no internet, so you had no access to figuring out what was going on. I am not sure if it is quite as possible to be enthralled by glitch areas in that manner now.

    I noticed something a long time ago that no one seems to have pointed out (Similar to the later video about flying in the Stoneship Age): the generator insulators (those ribbed objects) at 35:39 and onwards are only halfway-rendered, and turned into a 3D billboarded shape. (i.e. the cylinders are cut in half, and made to rotate on a particular axis so the arched outside part always faces you no matter what. Watch how they turn.) It's like the trees in the Myst Island forest, and the plants in Sirrus' room in Stoneship. They just did it this way to save on having to render parts that you don't see from the window.

    When I saw it was going to be over 50 mins. I thought I would probably watch 10 mins. and move on to the next video in my subs. (and come back later) But, you are so good that I watched the entire video and it felt like only 10 mins. I'd really like to listen to you explaining the "outside" of the other ages. There is something about how you go through it and give us just enough info to lead us to "tada! surprise!". I don't know if you get what i'm trying to express here. Anyway, you love doing this and it shows. And it is why I enjoy listening to you so much. Good work. And thanks for all the efforts.

    This was a great concept here! Not knowing a whole lot about programming and game design, this was really neat. I've always wondered about the relative size of things like the clocktower, and how these rooms interact, since the maps I've drawn have a hard time trying to fit everything together. There is a heck of a lot of stuff under this island. I wonder what it would look like from underneath if all the universes were simultaneously fleshed out. Imagine breaking down those walls under the island and being able to walk between the generator room and the Rime chamber and the dock forechamber and the Channelwood linking room and Atrus' house under the library-ish, etc.

    This is really awesome! I like how all these universes are intertwined together and how cheating them can bring awareness to some very strange occurences! I would really love to see more of these in the other ages! (if you do so I may send you some croissants or something else more oriented to your preference.)
    As usual, your very spiritful and entertaining commentary, along with your uncommon approach to Myst games, is what makes the whole video very catchy and I appreaciate that. Keep it fresh!

    Something I discovered...when you move left
    ight when peaking out of the tower, the entire scene moves drastically. This means you're more or less looking at an animated picture and not looking at any kind of real 3d rendering...it's not even really a portal (at least on Masterpiece Edition).

    I tried the "fly" hack in realMYST a very long time ago (around 10 years ago). I only did a little with it. I remember floating above MYST island, and also floating into the void in D'ni.
    I had no idea there was this much to find.
    The generator room being giant is sooo creepy. :)
    I've wondered if it is possible to "fly" to the upper areas in Channelwood.

    Although the generator area is large, if you think more about it, it fits in. The tunnel drops significantly underground. And the window is near the top of the area.
    Even when you're in the control room, you can tell how large the area is if you move around. If you play the game in stereoscopic 3D, you will be able to see it directly.
    The only inconsistency is the tower.

    It’s interesting to watch you work your way through this on the frontend making guesses as to how the game works. This video illustrates normal 3D game behavior- a "seamless" 3D experience is all smoke and mirrors, really! The portals you referenced are indeed called portals! Everything in the universe aka “cell” aka Myst Island is loaded but only a few of which may be visibly rendered on screen at a given time. Interior sections are set up inside of “room bounds” (invisible polygons with no collision) that have “portals” where the doorways and sometimes windows are so that everything to the player looks completely rendered and seemless but in reality, as you’ve seen, objects will be loaded or unloaded on the fly depending where the player stands and which portal they look at or pass through. There could also be the use of "Occlusion Culling" planes or polygons which essentially do the same thing, but they are happening behind the scenes. This makes logical sense. Not rendering objects that would normally not be visible to the player significantly increases performance (FPS) by taking an unnecessary strain off of your graphics card. Most 3D games operate like this, or have some other form of visibility determination. By making optimization tweaks like this, and using simpler models and smaller textures in the distance aka “LODs” game designers are able to use that left over potential of graphics cards to create better looking details in the player’s immediate visible surroundings as well as allow for "seemless" player travel rather then extra loading screens.

    If you work in 3-D You see these things all the time. UV Map's have to be applied to help you see and apply textures so you can stretch the texture and tile it. If you modify with a edit mesh modifier you have to flip normals or you won't see one side of a object this was a very interesting video would like to see more games explored. The game I'm working on I hope one day someone explores it.this deeply.

    In the CD copy of this game you could enter a code on the safe where you get the matches and it would look like it renders some sort of large FPS type gun model with a basic rust type texture that you carry around with you in front and toward the corner of the camera view. This appears to not be the case with the Steam copy of the game, since I haven't been able to reproduce it. It's been years... going on decades, since I did this, so I hope I'm remembering things accurately. I don't remember what the code was that I entered to do this, and I'm not sure if this was some sort of easter-egg or weird bug with remnant game code. Just thought it was kind of cool. Cheers.

    Interesting video. Just to let you know, realMYST didn't work in Windows after XP because of a simple programming mistake. There's a fixed version of the exe file out there that should run in Vista, 7 and 8. You can find the full technical details here:
    www.gog.com/forum/myst_series/realmyst_crashes_at_startup/post14
    The new realMYST Masterpiece Edition makes the old version obsolete, but if you still want to run the old one, that patch is far more practical than installing Windows XP.

      Cool! I remember starting out with 3dvia Shape and thinking "why can't I just create solid objects? Why aren't they filled on the inside?" Yeah, pretty much every game, including newer games, use the technique of hiding textures and references you can't see - it originated from games like this when tech wasn't fast enough for it, of course, but even now this rule is the same: the faster the better!
      It is freaky when you manage to go "sharking" and fall underneath the map, though...
      I'm surprised realMYST doesn't use a skybox instead of a skydome, though, since 3D objects are made of triangles so it's much easier for computers to display boxes - maybe they did that for the clouds, though. Also, note that the skydome will follow the player around based on how high off the ground they are so they'll never go through it!
      As for the stairs, I have no idea...

    Ah, fun with portal rendering. In fact a large amount of games use portal rendering methods. You can read about it here:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal_rendering

    • @shadyparadox
      @shadyparadox  10 лет назад +1

      Ooh, so I was right about the term 'portal'? Sweet!
      The article uses the terms 'zone' and 'sector' for what I referred to as universes. I admit my word sounds a little silly, but I do like its implicit reference to the fact that each zone extends in all directions indefinitely, while the other terms don't naturally do that. I'm not saying my term is better than theirs, but I am saying it's easier for normal chumps like me to keep that fact in mind while thinking about the game structure.

    • @GiantBlargg
      @GiantBlargg 10 лет назад

      shadyparadox The term universe is still a bit misleading because the sections of the world are still all in the same world just placed so far apart that they are functionally in their own "universe" This may not apply to the realMYST engine, but is common in portal rendered games.

    • @shadyparadox
      @shadyparadox  10 лет назад +2

      That's interesting, and it would certainly be neat to actually find a way to go from one room to another the long way without using a portal.
      I'm curious as to how that really works though, because I always assumed that the stuff around the edges like the sky and clouds were not part of the 3D environment, but merely the images set to display whenever you look in a direction that has no 3D objects along that line of sight. But if that were the case, then they would be visible in all environments.

      Well, every game should. Why would you have something loaded in Ram that the player cant see or interact with? Thats just a waste of memory. Obviously u cant always load and unload everything u dont need, but it still is good practice. Also those are optimizations that are not that needed nowadays as back then (except for aaa games i guess). The thing with the trees for example also still is used. Horizon zero dawn does it. Its called Lod level of detail

    I don't think they actually used everything from the actual game the texture feels different. The first game was made with a gray scale map extrudered in Stratta vision The world had to physically be made and they took a virtual camera in the 3-D environment and took all the still images that you click on and they programed it in hyper card which Apple done away with micro media director a lot of people have used which became Adobe director which is not supported anymore you could use adventure Maker if it still supports modern operating systems

    I always find you hilarious, and this is very entertaining. I'd be fine with anything you do.
    Are you going to play the Masterpiece edition, then?

      Play? Yes. Record? I'm not sure what I would do with it. I would hope people get the game and play it themselves.

      shadyparadox Makes sense. I can't imagine them changing the story too much anyhow. ^^ I tried to play MYST when I was very young and scared myself to pieces. Haven't tried again since (being that I no longer have a computer that it's downloaded on).

    Real Myst is bugged. Incredibly badly optimized. Sticking and freezing everywhere. Although I can play in Windows 10 instead of a virtual machine.

    Oh jeez, the game isn't consistent when you're hacking. What a shocking revelation. What a massive breach of immersion. Truly, this game is a piece of garbage because of this.
