  • In a search to equip its army with modern anti-aircraft vehicles, the JNA (Jugoslovenska narodna armija, Yugoslav People’s Army) High Command decided to negotiate the purchase of over 100 copies of the Soviet ZSU-57-2. These vehicles arrived in the 1960s and would be used to equip armored and tank brigades. The ZSU-57-2 would see action during the chaotic Yugoslav wars in the 1990s. A few vehicles would remain in service up to 2005 in the Serbian Army (Vojska Srbije) and 2006 in the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Oružane snage Bosne i Hercegovine) before finally being retired from service.

Well, after ZSU, the JNA started getting 30mm Praga and 40mm Bofors guns, as well as license for manufacture of 20mm Hispano-Suiza guns (known as "triple barrels" cos they were usually mounted 3 on a single carrier). The most modern was Bofors coupled with the Giraffe radar.
And I spoke with the guy who served on ZSU-57-2... He absolutely had nothing nice to say about it. Hated that thing... I myself served on Bofors (Giraffe, to be more precise).
During 1999 NATO bombing, all these were used, mostly as city defenses, among other things. They were placed on several positions around the city they defended and when the attacks started, they would fire into the air, not really aiming, forming a kind of cone shape. However, not all of them would fire and not from all positions. Once some plane would separate and get lower for an attack run, suddenly pretty much ALL would start to fire and actually aim at that plane this time. That way, the enemy, who has studied the positions and fire patterns would be surprised half way through his attack run and would often just abort. Once the enemy plane would quit the attack run, the guns that were previously silent would go dark again. This tactics was often called "osinjak" (wasps' nest). Here, the purpose was denial rather than the actual destruction of the enemy plane. Let's face it; not much more these things could do...
Often, AAA was used to try and hit enemy missile before it gets to the target.

Soldier from the 70s, in a Cav unit. This and ZSU 23 4 were the two units you didn't want to fine in a engagement, both would be deadly to the light skin vehicles we had.

In Serbia there is saying Man intends and God decides. Best example was ZSU 57. Create for AA role but oh boy... Imagine hiting building with 50 HE shells in less then a minute... or rebel outpost on hilltop ... pure carnage!
I wonder if he gets a top cover and new thermal cameras etc. Some kind of ERO... and above all smart ammo with programmable detonation... this old beast can serve as fire support vehicle for a few decades more.

Great for when you need 150mm of pen to take out heavily armoured planes.

This has the largest turret I have ever seen. Being next to one, the size alone was impressive. However, the huge size is difficult to hide or camouflage.

And also - the larger the turret - the thinner its armor is, since weight is a functional constraint.

That's why we use unmanned turrets that are very small

Da li neko zna da li je bilo dejstvovano sa ZSU na avione 1999 godine za vreme nato agresije?

Zsu je bio zastareo za brze avione, dejstvovali su koliko znam samo po krstarećim raketama i dronovima

We play a bit with the titles because RUclips seems to like that.
The content in the videos is 100% serious.

In the 1990s it's going to be a problem for NATO Ground attack planes A-10 Warthog 🇺🇸 🇫🇷🇬🇧 Specat Jaguar & the Italian AMX International operating in Bosnia and Kosovo supporting the opposition against the Serbian Army a single shot from these can take down those NATO attack planes

If it hits... It has slow traverse and a poor aiming system (basically just "Mk1 eyeball")
