I have to say first, this was one of the toughest rounds of MK I've played... i split it into two parts.. I spent 3 hours on this round, trying to figure out the plays and filming them. Tough, tough, tough ! This is why I love Mage Knight..a real "gamer's game". Enjoy !! (part 2 tomorrow).
Fabulous videos! I received Mage knight and the expansion for Christmas and your videos have helped tremendously in getting my first game going with minimal headaches. I feared this game for a long time as it has a reputation for being 'difficult' to learn but your videos make learning much easier. Your patient style, calm voice, and attention to detail are top notch! Thank you!
thanks Fred ! It is just one camera. I try to make the cuts as unnoticeable as possible... wouldn't want to break the illusion :) Did I just break the illusion ? I enjoy the video making process very much. A 15 minute video is about 1 hr in filming. But with no retakes, there are always little things I am not happy with.. that's the most annoying thing about having one camera. e.g. sometimes the shot is not quite where I want it. Glad you like, best wishes, Rick
Hey Ricky, First off I love the videos! Second I believe that Scott Smart is right and that you wouldn't be able to use the refreshing breeze in combat to get the white mana crystal and heal. Alliteratively you could use crystallize, powered with blue mana from the source, get a white mana crystal, swift bolt + rage, and then heal two after combat using Tranq (unpowered) and refreshing breeze. As an added bonus you have an extra white mana crystal and can burn through your deck a little ;)
I can't say for sure, but my memory tells me the rules states that you must first chose your skill, then the advance action card. So you would have to reveal your two top skills, choose between those two and the ones in the common offer and then depending on which you pick, you take your advance action card.
Hi Scott.. of course ! I checked back.. and you are spot on.. of course, I had already started combat with the summoned gargoyle !! And, as this was a "reveal" i couldn't backtrack to play the skill. Good spot. At least I realised I couldn't heal.. but forget that I had revealed new info..i.e. the Gargoyle. Thanks for spotting :) Bye, Rick
The more I see of these, the more impressed I am with the production quality. In this video, for example, at 1:06 - 1:11 you are simply flipping over two cards, but there's an utterly seamless zoom cut between the two flips. If you're doing this alone that requires a camera adjustment between the two shots, as well as extra post production afterwards. I'd really love to learn more about how you produce these... perhaps that's a video itself.
Thanks 4lpha4w0lf. Thanks ! In my head I used the skill prior to combat (which I was I made a point of saying I didn't get the heal), but, Scott is right, but for the wrong reason.. I was not able to backtrack to prior to combat because I revealed new info (the Gargoyle). The integrity of the game is fine though, because I didn't heal :) Love your different combos. Keep 'em coming ! thanks, Rick
It worked for me! This first part was awesome. So if you decide to take one skill from the pool you don't have to show (and discard) two of tour own skills?
(Note to self, and all: as this is a timing issue, the important point is the timing of the "summon" by the Illusionist. If this happened prior to combat then I could have played the skill still; as the summon does not happen until the "Block" phase of combat, it means I cannot backtrack prior to combat as we are already passed the Range phase of combat when the Gargoyle is summoned)
I don't understand. What exactly did you backtrack? Couldn't you just have used the skill in the Attack phase? Although there is a healing effect, since there is also a non-healing effect you are allowed to use it in combat, you are just not allowed to use the healing portion of the skill.
In my opinion, this is a rule well justified in breaking. I agree with you that healing effects are not allowed to be played in battle, but the fact you have to play a skill that involves gaining a crystal (and it's once per round) before starting an attack doesn't make any sense to me. This game is so hard as it is, to add in these edge case restrictions is just too much. But that's what house rules are for :)
I thought if half the mana dice were not basic mana, you have to reroll them - is that a change from the expansion or am I remembering the rules incorrectly? Awesome play through!
You want to take advantage of that Tirelessness card but the game isn't giving you any Move... a tough one for sure, considering the General's proximity.
And I really do want to know where it states you don't flip your two skill tokens because I looked in the rules and can't find it. That's a huge thing I've been playing wrong if you can do that.
Uh, Ricky, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you read the skill card, it clearly states on Refreshing Breeze "Use once per round EXCEPT During Combat". So, you couldn't have used that skill then to get the white mana.
I wonder if u had to tkae 2 wounds at 10:30 ? I mean 5 attack and 3 def 1 wound and only 2 attack remains witch is not enough to wound u . Or m i mistaken?
if unblocked, you always take one wound. The process is: you take a wound, then reduce the attack by your armour, and continue to do so until the attack is
Great videos as always - as demonstrated by the fact this is the 2nd time I have watched this series! Minor observation but when you take your artefact I think it's supposed tobe done at the end of your turn? So you should have used Tranquility first. Made no difference, I know the feeling to be excited to get a new card, especially those awesome artefacts!
+Orion3T yes, end of turn.. but it is only to speed up play when playing multi-player. Solo you only have yourself to slow down :) So you are correct: end of turn is the ruling . Good shout!
I think it's one of those things, what to do if you simply forget something you always planned to do. If you suddenly realised you forgot to do something, do you 'takeback' or not even though the new information revealed had no bearing on your decision? In this case, it's a no-brainer I think. :)
If you're playing solo, then it's your game and you decide, as long as you feel you're not cheating yourself. That's my motto ! When playing PvP then, for the sake of fairness, you should stick to the letter of the laws....
Yes - rewards come at the end of the turn. Less important playing solo when you've got nothing left to reveal, but good for speeding up play playing multi-player.
+Istvan Fazakas yes. It is nothing to do with physical or non-physical though. All attacks are physical unless they have fire, ice or cold fire associated with them. The important rule is that ranged attacks can be used in the melee attack phase, but melee attacks cannot be used in the ranged attack phase. Hope this helps :)
***** that's right Colin :) I hopefully explained this at the time... I did things back to front, but yes, having taken the lowest advanced action, I was free to learn from others... thanks for watching the show. Enjoy the game! Rick
Jamiemackie you can use skills from the pool, or Wolfhawks's. The limitation is, if you take a skill from the pool then you have to take the lowest placed advanced skill card from the offer.
+Ricky Royal Did you intend on taking that skill from the offer and that's why you took the bottom card of the AA offer? As far as I can tell, the order of leveling up is reveal two skills, choose one and take an Advanced Action or choose one from the common offer and take the AA at the bottom of the offer.

Hi Phillippe, yes, you are correct, I did it out of sequence. Skills first, action second. Thanks for spotting !

I thought it was look 2 spaces away and attack if Volkare can when spell card was.drawn?

Rounds like this are why I love Mage Knight, cant want to see the second half

if you are using RUclips app on iPad you may need to switch off your iPad and switch it on again.... ?
when you burned the monastery your ability heals you 1. you could've used tranquillity without mana and then used spell mastery to gain tremor.
He couldn't heal himself with his ability since he used it while in combat.
13:40 wouldn't you take your reward of the artifact after you finished playing all of your cards for the turn?
Yes - rewards come at the end of the turn. Less important playing solo when you've got nothing left to reveal, but good for speeding up play playing multi-player.
Ricky Royal oh ok. Thanks! By the way, I really love this series . It's really well done!
12:00 why did you forgo the healing
I think just because i was helloing with cards anyway ... possibly !
So u can combine ranged attack with physical attacks as if would be all physical?
+Istvan Fazakas yes. It is nothing to do with physical or non-physical though. All attacks are physical unless they have fire, ice or cold fire associated with them. The important rule is that ranged attacks can be used in the melee attack phase, but melee attacks cannot be used in the ranged attack phase. Hope this helps :)
Thx. All clear :-)
It doesn't. I'll post a correction to show me discarding the two skills.. it doesn't affect anything here, I just didn't show it. Thanks guys, Rick
the video doesn't seem to work...
When you took there skill from the skill offer, shouldn't you have taken the lowest advanced action? Isn't that the price for learning from others?
***** that's right Colin :) I hopefully explained this at the time... I did things back to front, but yes, having taken the lowest advanced action, I was free to learn from others... thanks for watching the show. Enjoy the game! Rick
more than half.. half is ok :)
I think I would make an house rule that Thugs units can come when you burn a monastary. Would make sense with the theme I think.
100% agree. This makes so much sense that it seems almost an omission by mistake
@ 9:24 Hero in quotation marks! >.
When you lvl up in the end, didn't you have to draw 2 skills of Wolfhawk? - Or can you just chose not to, and pick Goldyx skills like you just did? :)
Jamiemackie you can use skills from the pool, or Wolfhawks's. The limitation is, if you take a skill from the pool then you have to take the lowest placed advanced skill card from the offer.

nop I'm on a PC, but another viewer said it worked so it must be on my end !
