For 2024-2025 it is estimated that Texas has a general fund surplus of 32 billion dollars. This is why we are voting this year to cut all property taxes for every property owner. Yay! Thanks guys! Loved your reaction! By the way that was the battleship Texas, from I believe WWI and WWII, at San Jacinto. Dry docked as a living museum. Had nothing to do with the Battle of San Jacinto, it was awarded to the state of Texas, and that is its forever home. So you take that "Merica" attitude, and multiply it by 10, that's Texans attitude about their state! LOL

Hi, I loved your comment! The Texas is right down the road from me right now. She's drydocked in here in Galveston being repaired. She had almost reached the point where she was unsalvageable. There's some great video of her being moved down the ship channel and into her new berth online. We stood and watched her being towed into port.

The Battleship Texas was used in WW1 and WW2 and was built in Virginia in 1914. President Woodrow Wilson put her to sea in 1918. Phil Collins, the singer/musician, is a huge buff of the Alamo and his wife purchased him his first historical item from the Alamo as a present. He continued to purchase more and more historical items. He helped fund a new museum at the Alamo , opened Spring 2023, and donated his collection of items. It's a wonderful museum and worth a visit if ever in San Antonio

Texas has the most unique story when it comes to becoming a state.
What really makes it unique is what happened before becoming a state.
Texas was once it's own country after defeating the Mexican army and Santa Anna in the Battle of San Jacinto which which lies just South of Houston Texas.

Instead of the noble people you might think, they were 'scallywags'. As many of the founding states were. Santa Ana was released to tell the story. To become a promoter (sorta). The Mexican army was dispersed. Upheaval in Mexico after Santa Ana with a series of Presidents. Then the descendent of Napoleon was ruler & one of the Hapsburgs after him.

I lived for 17 years just across the water from the San Jacinto battlefield in a place called Baytown. Visited the monument and Battleship Texas several times. The battleship was moved a few years ago for maintenance/refurbishment, so is no longer there. When finished, it will be moored in another location, I think Galveston has been mentioned but I'm not sure whether it's been decided. I am sure that I'm sorry it won't be returned to where it was. Visited with my granddaughter when she was only 5 or so, she climbed all over that ship. Later, as a teenager, watching a documentary, she turned to me and said, "you mean that was REAL?" Had to laugh.
The Texas was built during WWI and served during WWII in the Pacific at the Battle of Iwo Jima and in Europe in support of D-Day in addition to other deployments.
There are at least 2 movies that I remember about the Alamo, I'm sure there must be more. I like the one from the 1960s which starred John Wayne as Davy Crockett and other big movie stars of the period, but that's personal nostalgia as much as any appreciation for the quality of the moviemaking. I don't remember if Disney's Davy Crockett series covered it that much (where your song originated).

Y'all wonder how other states came to be here in the US, each one has their history on becoming a state. Now I know more about NC than I do TX history since that's where I grew up. NC was part of the original 13 colonies and of course is known for the infamous "CRO" carving on the tree in Roanoke. People believe the settlers went with the Croatoan tribe to survive the harsh winter while the leaders were in England, getting supplies.

Except for those established States during the American war of independence from Great Britain. I do believe Texas is the only other state that had to fight in a revolution to gain their own independence from a foreign country.
Most of the western United States like California were just land won during the Mexican American war. This is when Butthurt Santa Ana really screwed up and decided somehow after loosing to a few hundred settlers in Texas. That he was going to take on the United States as well.
Obviously Santa Ana had more balls than brains.

The Mexican army was exhausted after working through the night building defensive emplacements with the expected attack of the Texans and due to the long forced march that Santa Anna ordered.
When the attack didnt materialise like Santa Anna expected he gave his soldiers leave so they could eat and get some sleep.
Bad move on his part. While they rested Sam Houston attacked pretty much wiping the Mexican army out.

The Emily Morgan Hotel is next door to the Alamo in downtown San Antonio. Emily Morgan was a malto endensured servant of Col James Morgan of Morgan’s Point not far from San Jacinto. General Santa Anna was a known womanizer and the day of battle of San Jacinito he took a siesta in the afternoon with Emily Morgan. While Santa Anna was occupied, the Texan struck catching the Mexican Army “napping”. Maybe you have known Emily Morgan by another name, The Yellow Rose of Texas. The Texans stacked the deck and did not play fair. But then all is fair in love and war.

Houston, TX does not do launches, but they do, do 'returns'. At least last time I paid any attention. (Before they retired all the shuttles).
So, for every Texan that died, 70 Mexicans died that's a bad ratio for Mexico. Great ratio tho for Texas.

Interesting fact, officially, Ohio is the 17th state admitted into the USA. Tho TECHNICALLY, Arizona isn't the 48th state, they're the 47th and OHIO is the 48th. But 'officially' they 'retroactively' admitted us in 1953. (It was a Federal oversight as far as I can tell - that they fixed during Eisenhower's administration)

Sure there were some other issues that were valid but the big one was slavery: They fought a revolution to keep it.
