If you'll allow this old-ish white woman a moment, y'all are AMAZING!!! The things y'all have done this last year (and prior, but this year has been outstanding IMO) have made me proud to be a Mississippian (even though I sometimes want to pop some of my relatives upside the head for a few backwards opinions). Aside from the traffic, I kind of miss living/working in the Fondren area because I used to be able to hear y'all on game days. LOL
As a former band mom of a 'trumpet', I can tell you, these kids put in a TON of practice each season and it doesn't stop when they are perfect. You're correct Carol, the difference between tv and actually being there is AMAZING. The marching, maneuvering, playing, coordination of all - it leaves you breathless and all goosebumpy. I'm so glad you both enjoy this. My daughter spent 4 years of high school and 4 years of college in their marching bands. She also played in orchestra, concert bands, etc. Post college she played professionally in a Swing Band (Swing music) and also played for Bugles Across America, which is an organization where civilians play Taps at military funerals. She also played Taps for 2 of her uncles and her Papa (Grandfather) when he passed away. Anyway, Marching bands are incredible. ❤
I don't know if you can get this link or not, I hope you're able to. This is just the band 'trooping' from the parking lot to the playing field, playing their fight song. The marching band was over 300 strong, and yes, my trumpet is in this video. Lol. ruclips.net/video/wFWcWrvWwzs/видео.htmlsi=B9WfXIu7uEjQ7p_h
I played trumpet French horn and baritone. I received a full band scholarship and basically paid for 85% of my tuition. We work really hard, memorizing music, dance steps you name it.
I am a proud band mom as well. My daughter graduated from Cheyney University, YOU KNOW! When she told me she was going to be a drummer 🥁. Not discourage her, I asked her how could this be when you never played an instrument. She said "mom I know beats". When I first saw her play at homecoming I was speechless. Those kids worked! From then on I was at every performance. My sister and I fried chicken and made potato salad for them in the dorm's kitchen. By the middle of her third year, she was given the title of section leader. She never played before, didn't read music, but she played her booty off. She was known as the Devin Miles (Drum Line) of Cheyney University. I'm so proud of her and that she went to a HBCU. When her band played in my area, Cheyney was the only all black band. Well, when it was time for them perform. The crowd lost their minds and the audience was mostly white. For three years I had the pleasure to say that is my baby leading the drummers. It was so exciting and I miss it so.
Born and raised in Mississippi. Wanted to go to Jackson State. Parents couldn't afford it so I went into the Army. I'm in tears watching this because I am so proud of this kids! They work hard!
I love you guys’ reaction. I have one point of correction- this isn’t just “America,” it’s “Black America.” I make the distinction because this is a Black university (not that others can’t attend). It exists because we weren’t allowed to attend white universities. There is nothing like the soul and passion of Black people. Our influence on music, worldwide, attests to that. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
To the deniers, this is a part of our culture, the culture that you know who you are who say we don't have a culture. Thank you Recky and Carol for exploring our culture in the USA.
As a proud JSU alum and mother of a JSU alum we appreciate your support. If you ever get a chance go to Jackson MS for a JSU Homecoming. Your life will be enriched and forever change. Thee I Love!!
HBCU's have a unique culture that you might enjoy exploring. Step dancing competitions are amazing. They generally have the best drum lines. Those are a lot of fun to watch.
Right?? I kinda feel like European colleges should have marching bands. After all, they invented most of the historical instrument types that modern marching bands use.
As an African American it almost brings me to tears to see people from other cultures in this world admire something positive about our culture rather than the negativity our media usually portrays 🥹🥹🥹. The next step is to attend a game and experience the electrifying atmosphere first hand. You’ll have goosebumps for weeks! College football season starts in just 3 short weeks!😊
I think a lot of people don't understand the hours of intense daily practice that goes into this. Learning the songs, the marching routines, and being able to do both while learning to breath while playing their instrument. It's very hard work and bands don't get enough credit in my opinion. My son was in band and spent hours outside in the heat and cold daily perfecting their routines and still had to find time to study for their academic courses. And not only do they have to perform at games, they also have ongoing competitions around the state and nation throughout the year. Total respect.
The students who want to play for HBCU's start training in elementary school and once they get to college.... its ALL IN training!!! A lot of hard work goes into this type of performance. I LOVE the tradition of the HBCU culture.
Trust me... I'm from Louisiana. Gambling State University, Southern University, and Jackson State University has the best HBCU bands. We have had the Battle of the bands for years and im 51 yrs old...
HBCU school are so good other school pay for them to perform. Jackson State are known for having the best Drum Majors in all of America. I'm so glad you enjoy the performance.
I'm so glad that Recky and Carol expressed their true and genuine admiration for the JSU Marching Band. They and other bands from HBCUs represent a proud and historic tradition of black excellence in not just music, but in all disciplines of academics. We are very proud of our HBCUs.
I love y'all's reaction to this band! I'm from Mississippi, and my husband, daughter and I lived just up the road (about a mile or two) from JSU in South Jackson, back in 2015. It was great living there, because a lot of the time, we could sit on our front porch and listen to the band while they practiced, and when they were playing during a home game. We loved it! That was when I became a fan of The Sonic Boom. They are top-notch! And it thrills me when I see them perform on a national level, and now getting recognized at an international level! 😊 On a side note- Recky, I love your shirt! Real men DO rock pink! 😊 I'm coming up on my 3rd year of being a stage 3 breast cancer survivor on October 19th! 😊🩷
Loving your reactions!! Now think, those students out there are future doctors, lawyers, teachers etc. on scholarships because of their musical talent! We are very proud of our HBCUS. SOO fun, huh?
Hbcus have so many great bands. My top 5 are Jackson State,Southerners University,Norfolk State, FAMU and Tennessee State. They all give you the feels but for different reasons. Thanks for tuning in to our beloved bands
This couple is 100% genuine about their encouragement and support for this HBCU band. Tears are flowing from my eyes and my heart is full. These people are so enthusiastic about this band. The stands do not show any support by fans or friends. Jackson State excellent performance. Your goal of excellence is more than evident in this performance. God Bless you all.
I am a 66 yo Swedish-Amarican. The absolute BEST part of my American upbringing was being a part of the marching band and blasting the heck out of my sousaphone! Nothing compares in my adult life.
Hey Guys! Thanks for highlighting other types of college bands. So often the only band that gets reacted to is the OSU marching band. Universities like JSU are from HBCU’s and these schools have bands and videos on RUclips that get very little exposure to the mainstream. Please check more of them out. FAMU is another one. That’s Florida A&M University. Thanks again guys!
How they remember how to play all that music & can execute all the marching choreography never ceases to amaze me. Lucky for me, I was a majorette & my job was easier. LOL

African American are intelligent and great at everything we put our minds too. In America it's so much negative propaganda against Black people most people miss the culture of how talented we really are. Thanks for taking the time to discover what we love and enjoy. I am a 70 year old black woman and I attended Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, I was in the band as well, called (Ocean of Soul). It was such a fun and wonderful experience.
What struck me most is the utter wall of sound when the entire band is in concert position with all the horns blowing to the audience. Super powerful! I hope you enjoyed and thanks for sharing. ❤
My cousin went to school there. Also have family that went to Alabama State, Tuskegee and Bishop State. Most of my family is from Alabama and they have always been big on education. Alabama has more HBCUs than any state in the country.
Loved this post. You guys are awesome. I am a Jackson State Alumni and was one of the J5 drum majors 2018 and 2019. I would love to see your reaction to the band marching into the stadium and the 5th quarter band battles. New subscriber here. Those ladies are not cheerleaders. They are the band's dance team The Prancing J-settes. They are part of the band.
The ground level shots help give the perspective of how the band members are navigating around. Most of these band performance video are shot from overhead to show the formations, but on the field it's pretty mindboggling that they are not only playing each song, here they also dance in unison, but then know how to get into position. Kind of controlled chaos. LOL
Ohio State University showcases one style of marching band prevalent in the US but I am so glad you looked at Jackson State. Jackson State is an HBCU--a historically Black college/university. There are quite a few HBCUs in the US and their bands typically show this marching style--this is called a Show band style. While all US marching bands march in formation, the Show band style also emphasizes showmanship, dancing of the dance teams and Drum majors and also some dancing of the main band. The songs played are also from popular music like in this case, the R and B star Usher. HBCU bands are known for this type of performance and have even been paid to be guest bands when a schools band could not show up. HBCU bands have been featured on commercials and in special appearances in Europe, etc. Loved your reaction and also your other channel not a cooking show!
Here is another band video you might like--it showcases a joint performance of a traditional marching band with an HBCU band in a half time show: UNC and NCCU ruclips.net/video/mjStvU3cVOk/видео.html

THANKS FOR REACTING TO JSU Marching Band! I love Marching Bands of all kinds but HBCU's definitely sprinkle in a little Spice to their Marching Style!🎉
The real show at an HBCU game is the band marching into the stadium to take their places in the stands and the back and forth battles during the game is more entertaining then the game itself. NORTH CAROLINA A&T. HBCUs are Show Bands.

@@babynursekarenchecked out your link and they look amazing too!!
@tashaburgess3753 Thank you ma'am.
The Sonic Boom is among the best! They represent HBCU, Black, and American culture at the highest level. We adore them here in the States. 💙
Sonic Boom of the South..❤❤
My second choice after Grambling. Ended up at UAPB
JSU has a reputation to uphold.😍
Absolutely!💯💯🎯🎯🔥🔥❤️❤️
Love the Boom!
To the deniers, this is a part of our culture, the culture that you know who you are who say we don't have a culture. Thank you Recky and Carol for exploring our culture in the USA.
ADOS / FBA culture

The HBCUS ARE THE BEST MARCHING BANDS IN THE WORLD 🌎. THEY KNOW HOW TO PUT ON A SHOW ❤
Black American culture is so vast and beautiful... Watching people's reactions to our (FBA's)culture is so refreshing.
JSU representing Mississippi proudly!
This is part of Black American Culture and the history of HBCUs❤!
JSU Marching Band is called The Sonic Boom Of The South💥💥
#LuvDaBoom💙🩵
As a proud JSU alum and mother of a JSU alum we appreciate your support. If you ever get a chance go to Jackson MS for a JSU Homecoming. Your life will be enriched and forever change. Thee I Love!!
HBCU's have a unique culture that you might enjoy exploring. Step dancing competitions are amazing. They generally have the best drum lines. Those are a lot of fun to watch.
😒
I learned about HBCU's marching bands from the-GOOD-film-DRUMLINE. Anyone remember that movie ????
It is called Steppin(g)- not step dancing
Often imitated but NEVER duplicated!!!
This!
Former percussionist…I do well remember the heat, the cold, the long hours!!!
We used to learn the music first then the dances second. The hard part was putting both together. Once the two meshed it was all over!!
Thanks for displaying Black American culture and being respectful.❤❤❤❤
Well damn here I am on my lunch break, watching my school with tears in my eyes. I gotta toughen back up so I can walk back inside lol.
I went to TSU, but still had tears!
❤️✊🏿
😂😂 Let the tears flow, fam. Tears of JOY!
❤
The students who want to play for HBCU's start training in elementary school and once they get to college.... its ALL IN training!!! A lot of hard work goes into this type of performance. I LOVE the tradition of the HBCU culture.
Trust me... I'm from Louisiana. Gambling State University, Southern University, and Jackson State University has the best HBCU bands. We have had the Battle of the bands for years and im 51 yrs old...
Wow you remember that these young people today don't know how we love to go to the battle of the bands it was the best it was so much fun
I love the way her eyes light up when she see something. She likes
HBCU school are so good other school pay for them to perform. Jackson State are known for having the best Drum Majors in all of America. I'm so glad you enjoy the performance.
I thought Southern Jukebox was the best🤔
Not FAMU?
@@UnpopularOpinion3000 definitely FAMU!!!!!
Watching HBCUs Battle of the Bands and Half Time Shows are always electric.
Left Shark captured my heart for left life ❤❤.
Jackson State band and the Prancing J-settes are perfection.
I'm so glad that Recky and Carol expressed their true and genuine admiration for the JSU Marching Band. They and other bands from HBCUs represent a proud and historic tradition of black excellence in not just music, but in all disciplines of academics. We are very proud of our HBCUs.
FBA (foundational Black American) culture… ADOS ( American descendants of slavery) culture…. LETS GO!!!!!
💪🏾❤
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Soulaani 😊😊
I LOVE seeing Black Excellence. LET"S-GO !!! LOL.
We ochea let's go FBA and ADOS
I love y'all's reaction to this band! I'm from Mississippi, and my husband, daughter and I lived just up the road (about a mile or two) from JSU in South Jackson, back in 2015. It was great living there, because a lot of the time, we could sit on our front porch and listen to the band while they practiced, and when they were playing during a home game. We loved it! That was when I became a fan of The Sonic Boom. They are top-notch! And it thrills me when I see them perform on a national level, and now getting recognized at an international level! 😊
On a side note- Recky, I love your shirt! Real men DO rock pink! 😊 I'm coming up on my 3rd year of being a stage 3 breast cancer survivor on October 19th! 😊🩷
Amazing, and congratulations on your 3rd year🎉🥳❤️
Loving your reactions!!
Thank you from Kentucky for reacting to an HBCU band. They don't get enough love out there, IMO.
Our culture is so rich and I'm so glad it's spreading across the world. thanks for reviewing, love from an African American woman in Italy.
This "You got it Bad" arrangement is really, really nice. Wow!! Very clean but powerful. I give this performance five stars.
This is my alma mater! The Sonic Boom has consistently been a great band. I am 48 years old and when I was a little girl, I enjoyed watching them.
Yes, FAMU is great!
Definitely FAMU!
Yes please that’s my Alma mata
QUick FYI, this was the Marching band that Performed with Usher at the Last Superbowl.
I’m so happy that you all reacted to an HBCU Band!!!!
I graduated from a HBCU over 20yrs ago, and my fondest memories are my years in the Marching Band!!!
How they remember how to play all that music & can execute all the marching choreography never ceases to amaze me. Lucky for me, I was a majorette & my job was easier. LOL
I was in Jackson State band. Let me tell you, your brain is on overload learning all of this. Lol
Wasn't hard when you love the MUSIC...and it loves you back!! Former Tenor Sax section leader, Second chair Viola player in Orchestra
Black marching bands are one of the coolest parts of American culture. So glad you watched and enjoyed this!
HBCU FAMU RATTLER ALUMNI HERE!! 🐍 🐍 🧡💚 This looks like a Battle of the Bands competition we have here in the States. The Sonic Boom is an awesome band! Its amazing to me how we, in the black community, have always known about & so used to seeing the absolutely amazing marching bands of the HBCU's. Thanks to the internet, I'm glad other people from different countries are able to see their performances. But its even better to see it live!😉
🐍🐍🐍
Boom fan here. The SWAC is the best conference in the nation for bands. FAMU is a big part of that greatness.
@@northernsoutherngirl Alcorn Sounds of Dynamite here. Gotta love the HBCU band family. Nothing like it. We may go at each others neck during the game but whenever talking to another band head from another school is always love and the experiences and the stories lol
Battle of the Bands, both college and high school level, is always one of the the highlights of the year in the Black community ❤❤❤
@@themightierpencil wait. I have to disagree lol. I’ve gone to a few. And not gonna lie. After about an hour and half I’m ready to go. All those damn bands and sitting through the high schools also lol. Woooo I’m sitting there like ok now. How many bands do we have to listen to lol
The Sonic Boom is the nickname of.the band and the sound
I had the opportunity to see them live. They aren't called the Sonic Boom of the South for nothing!
We're all mesmerized. Great band, great talent and leadership. Hey guys, when will you be visiting? 😊
Hi guys… What I’m always amazed at is that these young people are playing instruments at the same time while doing all the rest of it… Just incredible
Always fun watching someone experience an HBCU band for the 1st time
So much dedication and practice. Wow! That was amazing!
This goes all the way down the high school as well. It’s a big part of our culture.
There’s NOTHING like watching an HBCU band march in and perform most specifically THEE JSU!! Thanks for sharing in your page!
I just teared up
watching them take the field. I am so proud to be part of a wonderful community and culture.
My HBCU is TALLADEGA College ❤… Glad you guys are watching HBCU Bands… Much Love from Alabama
My cousin went to school there. Also have family that went to Alabama State, Tuskegee and Bishop State. Most of my family is from Alabama and they have always been big on education. Alabama has more HBCUs than any state in the country.

It’s good to see both you and NickJ Reacts have watched Jackson state video, I hope more reaction channels check this out
its good to see channels checking this out now

Loved this post. You guys are awesome. I am a Jackson State Alumni and was one of the J5 drum majors 2018 and 2019. I would love to see your reaction to the band marching into the stadium and the 5th quarter band battles. New subscriber here. Those ladies are not cheerleaders. They are the band's dance team The Prancing J-settes. They are part of the band.
I Love My People‼️ Thank you for the post.
The ground level shots help give the perspective of how the band members are navigating around. Most of these band performance video are shot from overhead to show the formations, but on the field it's pretty mindboggling that they are not only playing each song, here they also dance in unison, but then know how to get into position. Kind of controlled chaos. LOL
Well written, the ground shots really help to see the intricate disection
Love the comment section! All my FBA ADOS family hyped!!! Made my heart full to see their reaction to our beautiful black American culture!!!
Here is another band video you might like--it showcases a joint performance of a traditional marching band with an HBCU band in a half time show: UNC and NCCU

I went to Jackson State for my PhD. It was an incredible experience! The band is incredible! The HBCU has battles of the bands in the south - it’s huge. I live in New Orleans and they are well-known for their talent.
As a band mom whose two sons played for Hampton University (one played drums, the other trumphet), this band brings back such wonderful memories. 😊💖

JSU will be at next Rose Parade and im excited for them.
JSU gets DOWN! When I was in high school, my friends and I would go to the football classics up here in Chicago- which were two HBCUs playing against each other. Whenever JSU was playing, they had the crowd going crazy. They always won the Battle of the Bands during halftime.
Speaking of, we're coming back in 2025🙌🏾! Jackson State vs Hampton🥳
Cary Mississippi loves J State 🔥🔥🔥
There is so much work and practice so that it becomes muscle memory. This was excellent!
I was in marching band in high school so I've seen a lot of different marching bands and this one is incredible! Their showmanship is one of a kind.

The real show at an HBCU game is the band marching into the stadium to take their places in the stands and the back and forth battles during the game is more entertaining then the game itself. NORTH CAROLINA A&T. HBCUs are Show Bands.
