Yes, it is and when people tell you that black American people never did anything for America and don’t have a culture. Please believe that it is false breakdancing is cultural dance as well and it shouldn’t be in the Olympics.
The performers/ dancers should rethink those routines both females and males. That is horrible. Absolutely horrible. That is not what I call dancing. It tells no story, no artistry, no depth, no originality. Dance is respectable. In all fairness other universities have the same low bar too. If they put their mind to it, they can do so much better than those suggestive routines.
As a former HBCU Marching Band Member, not only do we have to remember the steps, timing, routines, etc....We must also learn the music. We had to prove we knew everything. We also would change routines often. Plus we had to get ready for homecoming, parades, special events, etc.
Thank you so much for being interested in our culture! Yes those are college students. You can get college scholarships/money for marching band. Most have been in marching bands since at least freshman year of high school. They perform at halftime shows, parades, compete for money/prizes/bragging rights for their school program at competitions like battle of the bands and so much more. Takes lots of time, practice and dedication.
As a former member of thee Sonic Boom of the South it is hard work and dedication and a little crazy to get this down. In my day we changed the field shower every 2 or 3 weeks.

Reminds me of my time in band. I used to love performing. It was so electric. You do all this practice and go over everything over and over until its drilled into your skull, and the lights go up, and it's show time. The best was hitting that last beat when every single person in the band simultaneously knew we all killed it, and we'd still have to be professional up until we got off the field or behind the stage or left the event, and then we'd just lose it screaming and cheering.
First Chair Tenor Sax here!! The amount of training, rehearsing, and laps around that field with your instrument over your head (don't come to rehearsal unprepared...lol)..it was all worth it at SHOWTIME!! I sang at our halftime show...along with the marching band!!

Watch military or college bands make the 'big turn' during the Tournament of Roses parade on New Year's Day. That is the gold standard keeping in perfect lines while doing that.

I love the JU though I never went to the school. The impact on the surrounding communities shows in this performance as it does many. Jackson Mississippi does not get much attention though being the birthplace of America’s music and the home of blues. With so much grim that clouds the city, it is a beautiful city in reference to the people.
The HBCU bands are incredible. College marching bands overall have a long history in the US, with BIG Ten founding school, Purdue, the first to break ranks (earlier marched in more military formations) and create a formation (in 1906, the Block P), many started to chair step and other formations to create more entertaining shows. They make college football have much more pageantry than pros, part of why college football has exponentially more fans at games, biggest stadiums and fierce loyalties.
They do alot of practices, they have 8 counts for the steps they take, and the moves they make. The drum major and Band director help with memory as well. Hope this helps ❤
You’re saying college. It is actually Uni. In the States, college and university are interchangeable unlike in the UK. So I understand your confusion. Our upper high school grades 11 & 12 are what you consider college. Usually 17 and 18 year olds.
Muscle memory, snap and drive playing counting in your head. If I tried to look at the lines I would mess up. Knowing your sheet music will help you a lot. If you don’t know that music your body naturally will stop.
I can proudly say that my daddy is from Jackson. Mississippi, they may not be the richest state. But what Hbcu's have given black people and people try to copy, they can't? I was actually in England I grew up there for a bit of time, and I knew how to step because my dad was it drillmaster, and he taught me how to step. You haven't seen nothing. Watch a major red battle that is amazing as well. I'm a southern, I know, but tell Texas, Mississippi, represented right here
I've been in marching band in school, and it isn't as difficult as you might think. 1). You already know how to play the instrument, and 2). before you get on the pitch you learn the song so that you can play it by memory. Then 3). you just learn your placements on the field in relation to where you are in the music. All in all, a performance like this might take 6 months to a year to learn.
They dont have that kind of time. Football season. not including the playoffs, is like three months. They probably have 2 halftime programs, plus their pregame programs to perfect before that time. Band camp durations vary, so they probably learned that program and the others in about 6 to 8 weeks.
Yall way off. That show took a week to learn and a week to perfect. A total of 2weeks. Most times we only get a week to learn AND perfect. It's way harder than u can imagine.
@@karlinlee7908much respect! I used to come just to see the band and it was never the same routine, but always amazing and perfect. On the field and in the stands… JSU is in our MLK parade every year. One year it was looting down raining… yall still showed out and the parade was still packed ❤
I’m still mad til this day Jackson didn’t win this competition. They definitely got snubbed. They had the best sound better arrangements and field show concept. The judges see who the ppl loved from the views tho 💯

💙🤍ABSOLUTELY🖤AMAZING!!!!!!!
No. This ain’t that. This is professionalism, dedication, motivation, talent. HBCUs don’t play the same routine for a football season.
@@karlinlee7908much respect! I used to come just to see the band and it was never the same routine, but always amazing and perfect. On the field and in the stands… JSU is in our MLK parade every year. One year it was looting down raining… yall still showed out and the parade was still packed ❤
@@moonlit9608I’m so old…I still think in terms of the “Soul Bowl” in November…before you know…we got more high society. 😀
Asians do synchronized marching too. They just don't put it to music.
WE WAS ROBBED!🤬
I’m still mad til this day Jackson didn’t win this competition. They definitely got snubbed. They had the best sound better arrangements and field show concept. The judges see who the ppl loved from the views tho 💯
Jackson st?! Man go check out the Marching 100 out of FAMU.
This is next level???? This is normal in hbcus. LOL...
