Earlier in the year I did my Dragon Ball:GT Review series that everyone seemed to get a kick out of :) And so I decided to tackle Dragon Ball Super this time. With it being the worst Dragon Ball series in a long time to a lot of people, I figured a review and video essay was long overdue for the now finished series.
Last week I tackled the first 27 episodes of the series with the Battle of Gods and Resurrection F arcs, and this week I'm gonna be taking a closer look at the Universe 6 tournament featuring some of the best moments in the series for many. Can anyone say... Kaioken?

Three things I love about this arc:
- Hit.
- Vegeta as a mentor.
- Blue-Kaioken.

I suppose that's true. But they must've used the manga timeline for the movie.
Edit: said this as a joke, but actually toriyama wrote the script. I'm sure Toei had their own input but if things were excluded it's because he didn't put it in there.

I think revealing that Frost was some another evil guy like rest of the Frieza race was just disappointing. Being a character who cheats but for a good cause would have been much more interesting.

In the manga he is better. He is still a cheater and a bit of a dick but several characters actively recognize that he is not evil
A small detail in the manga that I prefer is that instead of falling asleep, buu just fails the test

That writing test was so dumb. Everyone being recruited should have enough intelligance to understand the rules.
As it turns out, Buu wasn't. I am convinced that, for once, Toriyama is actually thinking ahead... to avoid thinking to much. Neither him, Toyotaro or Toei want to figure out how strong Buu actually is, but we know he still is strong, so they need to come up with any excuse of the book to not use him.

@@saiyan_og9678 Oh, I heard about what they did with Buu currently in the manga now, but at the very least I still think that the issue with power Scaling was the reason they come up with excuses to not use him early on. After all, I think is safe to say that Moro and anything relating to him wasn't in the works so early in Super's lifespan.

Pretty sure vegetas stance during the hit fight was him taking whis’ advice on relaxing his body when he has the opportunity, as when hit starts to attack vegeta throws his hands up
That is exactly it. He implements that stance after Whis' advice.
Exactly this. I believe this makes a return vs Goku Black, when he pulls out his scythe. I really like how it’s not even mentioned, just a cool detail for the audience. It shows Vegeta’s really making an effort to improve himself.
I also feel like this is getting payoff in the Moro arc with Vegeta’s training on Yardrat.
It makes sense, Vegeta has always pushed his body to the limit in training and used his fear and insecurities to push himself, but to improve he has to give up those things.

@@hellothere-qf1ie Everything in the Super anime is Canon. Just as everything in the Super manga is canon. There's no distinction anymore as Toriyama himself didn't write either. He gave the writers of the two guidelines and key points, but everything else is up to the respective writers of the two media.

Honestly if this was the first arc of Super, everyone would be singing its praise. But after the first 26 episodes being remakes of two movies, then this comes out: "What, that's it?"
I was so lost on why they did that I missed everything up until zamasu fusion, I missed trunks going Brolly

Also at this point the animation never gets as bad as the first 2 arcs so the show would have been respect more not just in terms of story but also in animation which could be argued to be more important considering how damaging the first two arcs were to the reputation of the series, esp when those were adaptations of movies which will always top tv animation.
@@rpllrp Most of the criticisms you see pertain to the 3 original arcs though. The retellings are largely forgotten about. Yes, they are better but moreso in a sense that they are original and feature better animation. On other levels, namely storytelling, they fail in a number of areas. Conceptually they are fine, even thematically in theory they can be commended. But the execution is just all over the place. There is too much leaning towards the nonsensical or unnecessary, too much that breaks the established canon, too much pandering to nostalgia and merchandising, uneven pacing, a general lack of urgency, etc. Not that there aren't genuine great moments nd developments, but everything that surrounds them is questionable at best and poor at worst.

Vegeta's stance was like that because he was trying to do what whis suggested and be more relaxed he even does it against black. Monaka deserved that win.
Yup 100% this. I'm surprised Mark didn't pick up on this.
I don't see how Monaka deserved that win given how he just appears out of nowhere and only serves to give us a "shock ending" and i say that with heavy emphasis on the words given how blatantly predictable that was and thus ruining the purpose behind the shock ending.

My biggest issue with Frost is that when I first heard about him I was totally on board with the idea of a "good" Frieza, oh well, at least you can have a good Frieza race in the Xenoverse games

I need THAT
Hit is an Assassin, and has always been an Assassin, never a true Fighter. His fight with Goku forced him to adapt and become more of a fighter. Hit has never had to try before, so rather than just easily assassinating his targets, he's finally met a worthy opponent, this forces him to improve and bring out all of his (mostly unused) power, hence how he becomes stronger through the fight.

slejszer because I like everything I say? What the point of talking if you don’t agree with what you just said? The quality of Super is bad and therefore fat jokes are par for the course with the kind of humor you can expect in the series. Along with kid Mai wanting adult trunks to fuck her and Goku never kissed his wife but has two kids. Toriyama is bad at writing so fat jokes are the standard.
Till this day i'm salty about Frost not being a good guy.
He's more of a neutral guy in the manga version, he still cheats but is never shown to be an evil tyrant that the anime describes him. He's just a chill alien dude who doesn't have time for a tournament with no reward for him so he cheats to get it over with faster
It should've been he cheats to win to make sure that Champa doesn't go insane and kill innocent people
Gergő Bodzássy You know, the writers didn’t have to resort to poison in order to make his victories against Goku and Piccolo work. He could have just used pressure point techniques that could have put them off balance. It’s also a pretty crappy message to send to your viewers, it’s right to judge somebody if they look evil which is what the characters pretty much assumed about him.
I think it’s supposed to hammer home the point that anyone of Freeza’s race in any universe is _never_ a good guy. Whether or not it successfully made that point is up to you.

This series really exploits how super doesn’t have huge stories to the scale of Z or even the original at all. No huge grand stories, or huge adventures. Still a fan but it shows
Kinda reminds me of a mix of DB and DBZ.
DBZ really lacked legit tournaments that was a great part of the original series, and focused mostly on major threats and great "to the death" action, which DB lacked, favoring to lean on adventure.
Adventure aside, DBS has amazing fights that do indeed have universe ending risks, but also that great tournament vibe where we see the fighters strategize and even get some great hand to hand choreography (which has been missing since Raditz owned Goku and Piccolo)
It’s kind of like dragon ball in that way. There aren’t very many, if any, large stories. A lot of isolated events that are generally connected? Sure. But 100+ episode sagas? Non existent.

Imagine if Hit did his "I can improve super fast" against Jiren.
The Plan:
Fight Jiren for a bit
Escape
Rest
Repeat
Hit would be so powerful. Even if Jiren is too much, he could go for someone like Toppo who is more manageable. Hit could do what Freiza saga Vegeta did except without the limit of getting dangerously damaged.
that actually would've be a good way to keep hit in the tournament of power without being to far behind, via him using his pure progress while fighting strong people like jiren, and be a good use of a really cool character.
I remember when everyone thought that the hit that was eliminated was a clone and hit was actually still in the ring.

Well the creator has said he doesn't like Vegeta as opposed to Goku. But he didn't write DB Super. Just made vague guidelines for the arcs.
I wish they did more with HIT he was such a cool concept for a character and it was wasted.

That's how I feel every time they introduce new characters and doing nothing with them. Instead, they rely too much on older characters for nostalgia grab cash.
He is overrated.
They could still do a lot with him. Seeing as how Piccolo did a ton even after the Saiyan Saga, when Vegeta was introduced, it isn't completely hopeless for a rival just because a stronger one appears.

Yeah but to be fair they didn't just introduce the mcguffin balls for one single episode to clear up a single plot point and then completely ignore their existence.
Honestly forgot that character even existed, less memorable than half of Z's filler.

This is probably my favourite arc in the series. Honestly loved a lot of the fights, but surprisingly the fight between Vegeta and Magetta was my (2nd behind Goku going SSB Kio-Ken) fight. The idea that he was just a super defensive fighter who didn't need to resort to powerful attacks or combat, it was a "thinkers" battle rather than just screaming and powering up. I wish there were more interesting fights like these in the series, sure Hit had a bit of a gimmick to but certainly not on this level. Definitely underrated in my opinion!
If you like more interesting and strategic fights like that then I suggest reading the manga version of DB Super. Toei's writers seem to emphasize fighting harder while the manga's author emphasizes fighting smarter
Eh you don't need tension to be entertaining this arc was extremely entertaining
Mr Boerger ikr I do think the because of the lack of blood in the series and the art style the tension would be rusty
I know it‘s subjective, but Cabba‘s SSJ „Training“ was honestly, very bad. I know Mark and other people thing differentley, but Cabba turning Super Saiyan after a single threat seems very „deus ex machina“ and to be honest, i see it just as bad as when Caulifla learned Super Saiyan. In that regard, Goku should‘ve turned Super Sayian when he started to notice that his Kamehameha can‘t beat Vegeta‘s Galick Gun. Hell, Goku pretty much did the same thing to Gohan (threaten him with Cell and telling him everyone will die) and Gohan still had *major* troubles with it. So yeah, pretty much all of Universe 6‘s first time Super Saiyan transformations suck, *BAD.*

Cabba is way stronger then gohan, vegeta and goku when they went super saiyan. He is easily able to achieve it because he has already passed the minimum power level requirement for super saiyan LONG ago. Goku only went super saiyan against frezza because he was at the time at his limits of growth, he was not able get any stronger without unlocking super saiyan. Vegeta had to get strong enough and went though metal stress before he went super saiyan.
@@sarthakarora3212 it doesn't justify the bad writing. Yea he was angry at Vegeta for that threat, but the stakes of that tournament seemed so absolutely low and it honestly felt so forced. And on another unrelated note, Cabba looks boney af. Like bro Gohan had more muscle on him as an 11 year old child. Cabba has potential but just like many characters in super they fucked it up, slap some meat on his arms and legs from Christ's sake. In general, I think Cabba shouldn't have gone ssj in this tournament at all, and Vegeta telling him to "remember this pain", could have been a quote used later on to make him reflect on as the fuel to make him turn ssj when the stakes are actually high. The whole back tickling sensation after this made me not take super seriously as a semi competent story.
sarthak arora that is not how Super Sayian works or how it was established. You hear how Mark talks about how the SSJ3 and SSJ Blue transformations weren‘t as great as previous transformations, because they had no build up and only serve as „a new transformation for the power up“. Yeah, Cabba seems to be stronger (which in all honesty shows just how much worse Super‘s power levels and scalings are compared to the original DB, Z and even GT), but that doesn‘t change the fact that the transformation doesn‘t feel like a natural moment and, like i mentioned, a „deus ex machina“ moment to give the Plot more meaning.

Vegeta teaching Cabba is one of the best things to come from Super. You can see how much he still wants to foster a connection to his people, albeit from a different universe. Even after coming to terms with the loss of his planet, he cant help but take the role of a leader to Cabba and see his potential go higher
Universe 6 arc should’ve been the beginning of Super with the first couple episodes being the filler episodes we saw between BoG and RoF

Really love how well put together the script for your videos is. I truly enjoy watching them!
I remember when everyone thought that the hit that was eliminated in the ToP was one of his clones and that he was still in a ring. And I kinda wish it was true, or atleast that hit had and more major role in the ToP.

The slouched stance that vegeta takes is a follow up in story telling from the resurrection arc remember whis told him he’s always uptight and needs to relax a bit when he fights

I remember watching week to week. The two most unbelievable things that happened in this arc were: the audience actually thinking Monaka was strong despite how heavyhanded the dialogue was from the first meeting, and part of the audience actually thinking that Vegeta may have relapsed into his evil ways when he fought Cabba......

Haku infinite Zeno doesn't really care about that stuff. He straight up nuked the entire timeline just because Zamasu made him mad.
And it might be pretty easy to kill off the Supreme Kais without the GoDs noticing. Not only do they rarely contact other universes, but the GoDs also rarely ever stay with their Supreme Kai, if U6 and U7 are any indication.
@Haku infinite Well it's just my head canon but... Future Zamasu probably teleported Goku Black in the different universes. They probably killed them all in less than a second with their kai instant transmission.
Instant teleport to a universe -> instant kill -> instant teleport to a universe -> instant kill -> instant teleport to a universe... etc. No Angel can react that fast. Even with UI.
Angels with their G.O.Ds would take hours to travel to them. If they get attacked, then do the kais only got a second to react. And in the time they realize that another kai tries to kill them instead of normally visiting them, it's to late.
Besides that, I doubt they expected that a fellow kai who just entered their universe turns out to be a complete psychopath with god-complex who instantly tries to kill them. lol
@Haku infinite Didn't we see how U7s kai used instant transmission to another universe? We literally saw how he used it to get to Zenos Palace. And the story that if a surpreme kai dies a G.O.D. dies aswell, might BE the story that made sense...
G.O.D destroy worlds. Kai create worlds. Minus and plus. It's one thing and their life is coupled. I see what you mean with the fusion since that was a retcon. The coupled life however not. With that logic, you can literally call everthing creative in DBZ bullsh!t and an asspull.
@Haku infinite I honestly believe that these type of plot holes do not matter, without them the story would be boring. If somebody defeated zamasu before he detroyed the futur, there would be no story. Even if they meticulously explained how zamasu did all he did, what would it add to the story other than a long exposition dump? It wouldn't really enhance Zamasu's character, the z-fighters, the themes or anything.
Plus I don't know if most of what you listed are plot holes, you can probably shake them away with some light looking too deep into thing
I am pretty sure that it was never stated that Zamasu was immune to hakai. I think you confuse here,(or maybe i'm the one that is confused) Beerus destroyed past Zamasu, the one we see later on is another zamasu from another futur timeline. The same way that cell was killed in the past but was still in the futur
Toppo was an apprentice, so i suppose he doesn't need to be paired with anybody yet. As an apprentice god of destruction, Toppo was probably thought all the necessary abilities of a god. I think its like a supreme kai situation, I think i remember that he became supreme kai because the prevouis supreme kai was absorbed by Buu. It probably transmit when the beholder is incapacitated(Supreme kai's case) or death.
In futur trunks' timeline Whis can't do shit, when a G.O.D dies the angel is stripped of his power, so for all we know at that time he could have been death. He was probably killable, so there is zero reason for zamasu to not kill him then.
I can understand Zeno not doing anything to help. His an idiot and its made very clear his an idiot. He is a kid that gets distracted whenever he see flashy colors. The angels probably can't intervene that directly, they are supposed to stay neutral and the grand priest probably also needs to abide to those rules, plus i still can't shake away the feeling that he is evil

I loved the Universe 6 Tournament arc, and I’m totally ok with there not being a legitimate finish. Goku and Hit throwing their matches as a sign of respect to each other and being a metaphorical middle finger to Beerus and Champa is good enough for me.
Also I strongly disagree with Goku and Hits fight being lazy. Episode 38, while being very good set up, is just that...set up. 39 is Goku and Hit playing essentially a game of catch-up/one upsmanship/chess with their abilities and desperately reaching in their arsenals just to keep up with each other. Sounds very Dragon Ball if you ask me. Also Hit explains that no one had ever challenged him like Goku had so he had no real reason to consider improving his technique...and he figured out how to mid fight. I personally love that and think it’s very cool. And again, it feels VERY much like Dragon Ball. Hell, I even enjoy the end of their fight in Episode 40.

@@CosilHeiir Eh. The problem with the Black arc is that Goku/Vegeta hopped to the future and back out like... what, *three* times? And then Zamasu had the same problems that Garlic Jr. (a filler/movie villain) did with being immortal. The power scaling jumped around like crazy with Fusion Zamasu somehow being able to do the most insane stuff including spread his essence out across the universe to... corrupt it or something? And it was all just so Zeno could show off what he can do as pretext for the Tournament of Power. Future Trunks and Mai failed to defend their timeline and were told to just sort of suck it up and go find another timeline to mooch off of... and somehow that was a happy end for them.
There were certainly good moments and elements, and creating a Kai villain was super cool too, plus the animation was really going crazy good in some spots, but story-wise and pacing-wise it was a total mess. For how grievous of an offense time travel apparently is, and how limited the Time Machine was supposed to be with its capabilities, they sure did work around those and treat them as non-consequential, and every time Goku/Trunks/Vegeta were in a pinch they'd find a way to just go back to the past and/or Trunks would stay behind and find a way to not get killed. It just felt like there was never really an actual threat to the main timeline until much later near the end, and the future timeline didn't really matter much since it was discarded as a plot device. And the way the ending was wrapped up was just... really bad and didn't make much sense other than they needed to BS a reason to not keep FTrunks and FMai around.

What I really appreciated about this Arc was that many of the fights relied on STRATEGY over Raw Power. Something DBZ has never really explored- before it was always Power up more than your opponent to win and that's all. In this tournament each Enemy our home boys faced off against was utilizing a unique Technique. Bear guy was impervious to regular damage and had to be Sumo'd out of the ring. Frost was a cheating bastard using Poison darts meaning you could not risk being hit even one time by him. Mageta is probably the most similar to an oldschool villain and was kind of a funny nod to Janemba in that he is very durable and strong but needs to be Insulted to get into his head and throw him out of balance. Hit was super cool and I love his entire aesthetic and demeanor- he is such a pro and his Time Skip ability is super broken. It was really cool to have him wreck Vegeta so Goku watching on the sidelines could try and figure out what Hit was doing. And eventually Goku overcomes the ability not necessarily through pure strength but through sheer SPEED. I've got to say this arc really sealed DBS for me as being unique and kept me hopeful for the future of the series. I did NOT EXPECT TO EVER see Kaioken return the way it did- STACKING IT ON TOP OF SSJBLUE was such a treat and I was cheering at my TV that whole sequence.
Edit- And I forgot about Cabba! I really liked his fight with Vegeta. While it was brief it was touching to see Vegeta show his Saiyan pride in a non-douchey way. He feels like he failed his people in this universe and he kind of takes Cabba under his wing and trains him how to become better. I would love, love LOVE an Arc where Vegeta travels to their planet as they hinted at. It would be so awesome to see Vegeta truly raise up his people and make them stronger. I think it would be an amazing place to End Vegetas story to be honest. Either him saving Sadal and the final shot being him taking the throne- or dying (permanently) to save them from destruction.
