Here in France, a GR86 is much more expensive. So i chose the MX-5 as my daily even it's not very practical, i have no regrets, it's so much fun ! And the interior quality is nicer than the toyota.
Perhaps the better review I have seen in context for these 2 cars which in reality are very different other than having similar drivers in their sights. Usually the 86 has younger drivers and the Mx5 older types😌 cheers from Oz 🇦🇺
@@uncois Agree , over 50 years of driving & in early 2017 I bought my 1st ever convertible. Didn't know if it was daily drivable but 6 years now in a 2016 Club soft top & been thru some of the worst weather conditions I've experienced. The ice & snow is not a problem with winter tires keeping the off season tires on a dolley in the garage. I do the maintenance as far as oil changes / tire rotations / wheel changes plus the mods ! Just a blast so far !
Haven't seen your channel before, but really like it. Wonderful cars. I'd prefer Mazda do more chassis work than electronics work to improve handling posture. But still, its still so analogue overall. Of the twins I personally like the BRZ over the GR86 for its slightly more compliant suspension, they both are terrific of course. Keep up the good work.
Very good review. Some good comments from fellow enthusiasts on why they prefer one over the other. I just picked up a 2021 club soft top and also have a 2022 gr86….absolutely love them both.
@@MGReviewsBlog two answers for you. I grab the Miata keys more frequently because it’s new to me. If I could only have one it’d be the gr86. Practicality advantage aside, it’s got more midrange torque and its handling characteristics are more fun (flat handling with tail happiness engineered in). So many people praise the quality of the stick shift in the Miata - and for good reason - but I see the gr86’s as different vs lesser. It’s very good in its own right. The clutch feel is advantage to Miata. Although aesthetics are secondary to fun to drive factor for me - I’d call it a push. Traded a 981 boxster s for this Miata and no regrets. Porsche makes excellent cars, but it’s really hard to beat the driving experience of these two with or without the cost factored in.
The choice between an ND2 or one of the updated twins is honestly one of the most difficult decisions in my life. Seems like every few weeks I get swayed to one side or another. The advice I've seen most of the time is: "close your eyes, hold your breath, Miata."
@M.G. Reviews Flipped a coin. I now have a white ND2 Miata RF GT. Because of the unpopular options I wanted, the one I found wasn't selling, so I got it for less than a premium trim GR86/BRZ. Not as fast or convenient as one of the twins but man is it a blast, especially with the top down. I love it.
I used to own an ND2 and it was a blast. Upgraded eibach springs with the club model bilstein shocks and loved the handling. I went with a Model 3 for a daily and will get another MX-5 to complement the weekends. Respect the BRZ, really love what they did with it, but nothing beats the top down experience.
@@mx-5driver406 It’s pretty much the perfect daily. Once you get used to daily charging at home it’s hard to go back to gas stations, and the AWD is kind of incredible in snow.
I love your reviews. I own the 2017 Miata RF in gray with 33,000 miles on her and I love this car. It’s funny being around strangers the women know it’s a Miata and love it and the men ask me what it is because they think it looks really good and love it. I tell them it’s a Miata and they’re like “really!” because of the stigma. It’s more fun to drive than my previous motorcycle 2018 Triumph Street Triple RS.
Now that I'm finally driving my GR86 I can vouch for you said in this comparison, every pros and cons and all your considerations are true! I just need a bit more time to make mind about which one is really the best one, I'll update one day... 😁
WOW! I am totally impressed by your video production. Camera work, information and comparison was just superb. Thank you so much. I am currently shopping these two cars, and possibly something from Honda like the SI or Sport Touring hatchback. I must have a manual and that limits my choices along with trying to purchase something under $40k USD. I will probably end up with the Mazda3 Premium Hatchback manual due to cost , space , naturally aspirated motor and the expected reliability and other comfort features for vacation travel. I am still driving the Mazda3 sedan manual that I bought new in 2006 and love it but I want something new for my retirement gift to myself! I ride motorcycles, I drove a semi for several years and the manual transmission has been me since the age of 16. I have subscribed , liked and hope that I will find more reviews from you possibly with the Honda Sport Touring, SI, Type-R, Integra, Elantra-N, BRZ, Mazda3 with manual of course and anything else similar that falls within my budget and is available with the manual .
Thank you! I drove some of the cars that you mentioned... Mazda 3 manual vs Civic manual: ruclips.net/video/GbjuvcYZCbc/видео.html Enlantra N: ruclips.net/video/pM8o61yk1C0/видео.html I also drove the new Integra but I just have a written review for it: mgreviews.com/review-2023-acura-integra-a-spec/
I had an RF for 5 years and only recently flipped it for a 2022 BRZ. They are both great cars and it’s a miracle they both still exist. They both “daily” really easily. The Mazda was probably the least temperamental in an urban environment having a less tricky clutch and better torque below 2000…but they are both pretty easy in traffic. They both reward on Sunday morning back roads. The Mazda is more fun at 6/10ths but the Toybaru is more capable at 9/10ths. It’s the better out of the box track car. If you want open air, it’s a no contest, but if you are over 6ft and/or you need the car to car any luggage at all, then it’s a no contest to the Toybaru. The Mazda requires you to make the more compromises. It’s really a toy. You really can’t go wrong with either….but if you are over 6’2”, buy the Toybaru.
@@MGReviewsBlog It’s been great. Got tracked (still stock) on the weekend and even though I didn’t push it past about 8-9/10ths, it was brilliant for a “straight out of the box” car. The RF would have been starting to get a bit ragged at the speeds I was pushing the BRZ. Both cars need work if you are going to push them to the limit on track…but the BRZ is definitely the more track ready. The Mazda is probably more entertaining at legal road speeds though.
Agree, the MX5 is a toy. I view it as a Ferrari for people who can't afford a real one. Probably a lot more fun in the slow twisties as it has just the right amount of power. I wouldn't own one if my wife didn't have a proper car.
@@heroictesticles6870 I won’t diss the MX5. It’s a brilliant car. Better out of the box as a road car than a track weapon…but probably the most entertaining Sunday morning backroads car you can buy.
@@richardhoulton4016 I use my '21 RF as a daily, but I don't do daily things. Just taking the wife out and fun drives. But it wouldn't be practical if it was the only car we owned. I did have a proper car as well but never used it once I bought the MX5, so rely on the wife's car for normal things. I have a lot of fun in mine, I think I will need a new clutch in mine soon after only a year of ownership... Rear brake pads need changing too and a new set of tires. I drive it like I stole it, it's what it was made for.
The mx5 and the BRZ were the 2 final cars in my decision for a new car, i went for the MX5-gt-RF in black. Wonderful video format my guy! Still obsessed with watching videos comparing the 2. And thanks for that little bit of confirmation bias 😂
Please give me your thoughts on the RF today, 8 months later. Any regrets, would you buy something different today if it was not a money consideration? Different color choice?
@@t.k.morrisI had the chance of test driving both and let me tell you something after driving Miata for a while, gr86 just feels less quality and less joy. No kidding jumping on the Miata and accelerating puts a smile on your face every single time.
@@Frank_Saug I bought the 2023 Mazda3 Premium H/B with the manual transmission instead. I loved the Miata but just couldn't live with such a small trunk and no backseat. I never did drive the BRZ but I still own my 2006 Mazda3 and had a 1986 Mazda RX7 that I loved! I need to sell my 2006 but I still like it too much to just give it away so to say. It is my beater car now.
I've had three MX5's over the years. A 1996, 1999, and a 2003...all great cars. I'll take this Mazda over the GR86, but I'd go with the cheapest MX5 which is more than enough for me. I also believe the MX5 would out handle the GR86 on the track.
I don't think the Miata sport package is worth getting. The standard brakes are more than adequate and the rest of it is just cosmetic. It's way too much $$ for what you get, so I'd definitely skip it. Personally, I'd choose the Miata grand touring manual over the 86. You can get that spec for $34000 US. It's a super fun car to drive and you get the open roof, which adds to the driving experience. And at 6ft 1 I easily fit with room to spare.
The 86 looks nice but it's kind of mainstream and boring looking. The MX-5 is really a looker, especially the RF variant. I would say the MX-5 has better looking interior as well as better interior material.
At the moment the GR86 doesn't feel as mainstream as the FRS/GT86. Not that many around. But I get what you mean. Once more of them arrive at dealerships then it'll be like the Tesla Model 3 of sports cars. They'll be everywhere.
The other thing you forgot to mention is that with the Premium trim of the GR86 you get 18" Michelin Pilot 4 summer tires, vs the 17" Michelin all-season Primacy tires on the base model. The Primacy tires are quieter and slide much easier. The Pilot 4 tires grip better and create a lot more road noise.
Yeah but that tire feature is gonna last what ? Maybe a few months from good use. Then off to buy more. As supposed to brakes, suspensions, interior upgrades.
I think it makes more sense to regard the back seat of the GR86/BRZ as auxiliary storage, especially since you can lower the seatback to create a pass-through from the trunk.
I have a GR86 on order and I'm coming from an ND2 MX-5... Hope I'm not making the wrong decision! Luckily, being in the UK, the GR86 is a limited run of around 400-450 cars so the rarity might help in making it a good choice.
I don't think you'll have any regrets with the GR86. They're both fun cars to drive in their own right. One maybe a little bit better than the other but the other is more practical. So it comes down to how you plan on using the car. But either way, both are super fun. Hopefully you don't have to wait that much longer for your order to arrive!
@@vhockada 15 to 20 years ago I thought the same way. Now after owning a 2016 MX-5 Club soft top I cannot image owning a different car. Its way more civilized than the other convertibles I knew growing up. The open top Mazda is a much different experience. I live in a 4 season climate & the top has performed nicely. Even in the ice & snowstorms I've been thru its been almost as good as a hardtop. Only thing is the noise is louder than anything I've owned before. The Bose stereo with the speakers in the headrests help with that.
I had a 1989 Miata which is even smaller and drove it till it fell apart after 18 years. I currently have a 2003 SLK 320 which feels similar since it is a 2 seater roadster. It is my only car and I store it during the winter. If I need anything bigger, I rent it for the day.
I think many GR86/BRZ owners use them as daily drivers (me included), that definitely rules out the Mazda for me. The amount of usable space in the 86/BRZ is actually pretty amazing for how small the car is. It seems in most comparison reviews that fact gets ignored, and for me it's probably the essential difference in why I chose the BRZ.
WRONG Alex ! I live in a 4 season climate & the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Club is my daily driver. If you put winter tires on this car its great fun in the snow ! The 50 / 50 weight balance is more apparent when traction is at a minimum ! The soft top is often dropped in the winter months. It gives a great view with the top down with the side windows up & the heater on full heat the experience is refreshing ! 5 winters so far & its a magical car ! This is my 1st convertible in over 50 years of driving & while there is a little more more involved its worth the extra effort. This has has been very reliable having been thru some of the worst weather in all the years driving. Best car I have ever owned with an extreme fun factor. The fact its limited on space is its drawback. Using the passenger seat for extra storage compensates for that.
@@ag4allgood wrong? my goodness calm down. More power to you if you can live with the cargo limitations of an mx-5 as your daily driver/only car, I personally can't and there's many like me who's only car is their BRZ/86 and we need the utility of a back seat which can be folded down or utilize as back seats. My comment has nothing to do with driving dynamics.
I’m buying my first car in a couple of months. Dad is helping with the co-sign but drives a Prius and swears that sports cars are the devil. (No dice on getting any input from him unfortunately.) I’m split between the Miata MX5 grand touring, GR 86 Premium & Supra 2.0 w/ safety jbl package. I understand all three cars are entirely different in terms of performance, but the breaking point for me is the technology. Would you be able to give your honest opinion on the three? That’d be helpful, sir. Great video, as always. 💯 (current car 2011 scion xb)
So the most technological among those three would be the Supra but it's also the most expensive. I did a review of that one a couple months ago: ruclips.net/video/bqFL8IOHLls/видео.html I personally really liked the 2.0L Supra and if I had a budget like that car demands, then I'd be going for it. If your budget is not that much, the other two are similar when it comes to tech. In my opinion, like I said in the video, it comes down to how you are planning on using it. If you want a daily commuter with a lot of practicality (relatively speaking, the GR86 is the one to go for. The MX5 is also a good daily and drives a bit better than the GR86 but also not as practical and more expensive (in the GT trim). So for me, Supra 1st, GR86 2nd, MX5 3rd.
Thks for this video, I love these two cars, but honestly If I had money to buy one of them : mx5 without hésitation : looks better, it 's lighter and it s convertible !!!! Definitely mx5 for me
I bought a new Mx 5 GP-S in Vancouver and added a 1k exhaust from Flying Miata adding 16 bhp and 8 lbs of torque .This saved more than 3k over the Recaro package and sounds much better and is quicker.Be warned the Base seats are more more comfortable and cooler in hot weather than the recaro seats.
I decided my Guilia was too fat & I wanted a 3rd pedal. So I cross shopping these. The Miata is technically better with double wishbone and actually a pretty engine you can see. However I need subwoofer to complete my driving experience so I got the BRZ. The Miata is a bit more cheerful and fun while between these 2 Twins were more serious grip & rip car. Once upon a time I did daily an NA but the BRZ is the better practical choice again between these 2
The best Miata is the base one it's all you need. It's a shame that in the near future both cars might be gone. It's strange everyone keeps comparing these 2 cars but really they both have no real competitor. Great review.
Great review! I bought a brand new MX5 ST last spring! Everything you report is true, I’m is love with my car. I love the GR86 too, I asked myself: what if I have choosen the Toyota? Well the ecologic taxe penalty in France is... 17K € for a GR86, true story. My MX5 cost me "only" 3K € which is a pain in the ass but doable. In France there is no choise, they kill petrol engines cars. I guess my fellow european have the same deal?
Oh wow, 17,000 Euro extra tax on top of the price of the car??? That's theft lol. Yea I guess the French government really hates the car even though they've become far more efficient than ever before.
I decided to order the 86 and I'm currently waiting for it. But I was and I still am a huge fan of the miata ND so even though I know I've made a logical choice as you said my heart breaks every time I fantasize about owning the miata! That 86 better be very good or I can see myself already trowing it away to get a miata
I heard a lot of reviewers saying the same… the little miata is a very well designed car, very hard to beat that and obviously toyota had to keep price as low as possible. I honestly don’t know what to expect, I just hope the 86 will be good enough to compensate. Also I heard others saying the miata doesn’t have any rev hang while the toyota does have some at low rpms, and for me this is the worst drawback the 86 has compared to the miata
@@guattodaddo well to be honest, i had no intention of getting a miata, ive had an 86 on order since june, i was deadset on it, the miata was on the lot so i figured why not test drive it for a comparison, and that's truly all it took, the clutch engagement point is not defined at all, the 86 was the first car in forever that i actually stalled during the test drive (dont tell the salesman haha), i found it was impossible to make a smooth start with the thing, but the 86 is a beautiful car visually, sad.
@@wolfgagger I don't know about you but I finally have my GR now, it's been roughly 1 month now. All the things you and M.G. said I can confirm. I'm enjoying the car a lot, but the clutch pedal is killing me and I too stalled my car a number of times in my complete disbelief... It's not good at all and the fact that I drove a mazda for the past 6 years is making it worst ! I also went and test driven a miata and I was able the adjust the seat and the steering more precisely. In the GR I am comfortable but I wish the steering would have a little bit more telescopic travel. The rev hang in the GR is just awful in city driving at low speeds! At some point I was so pissed that I went for a longer route just to go faster and shift less... But as M.G. said in the video, when you drive hard you don't have this problem no more. Still, to think mazda has put absolutely ZERO rev hang in the miata I wonder why the hell toyota and subaru thought it was a good idea in the first place... The shifter as M.G. said is better in the mx5, bar none the best shifter I ever had the pleasure to operate. The one in the GR is simply less precise and it wobbles a bit too much for my taste, it still has a very good feeling but it just can't beat the mazda's shifter. Apart from these considerations I'm enjoying the 86 a lot, the engine is very nice, the oversteer and the handling are also very enjoyable! I do not regret the waiting and my decision to get the 86. Now it's time to do some changes to address all the issues and then new exhaust and wheels !
I'm not sure what tires the MX5 GT comes with but this GS-P trim that i reviewed had Bridgestone summer tires. They should last you a reasonable amount of time but if you plan on using the MX-5 during the winter months, a good set of winter tires is a must.
Go 4k, fix the white balance and drop the long recitation of facts in the beginning. Anyone who has found your channel is such a petrol-head that they probably already know these things. That said, I think you may have a shot at this. Your subjective impressions were very useful. Subbed, great match up in this vid. Best wishes for you and your channel.
Thanks for the input. Unfortunately right now I don't have the money for a 4K camera with at least 60p capability. As for the intro, I feel like most of the audience that watches my videos are potential buyers more so than gearheads. But I'll keep that in mind for some of the more sporty / niche cars. @@MGReviewsBlog Let me just communicate you made a very worthwhile video here. I"m debating these two vehicles right now and even though I've driven both it has been a long while and your input is useful. I think you understand cars and how to present them. It seems like there are a bunch of small YT channels that just popped up talking about cars and I believe you have a better chance of success than the other ones I've seen. As for the recitation of facts, here is what I mean. Instead of saying the GR86 "produces 228hp","isn't a huge bump in power". You could say, "They claim the GR86 makes 228hp but it seems Toyota has under-rated the engine. It has been dyno'd at 210hp at the wheels. Which is almost 50hp up on the old engine and you can absolutely feel the extra shove!" I'm sure you know the new engine is under-rated. Share that. It's fun and interesting and that type of detail will elevate your videos. In other words sell the sizzle not the steak! Good luck my English Friend!
If you can live with the smaller space the Miata will always be the better sportcar. Much better suspension, double wishbones all around compared to the McPherson of the 86, 50/50 weight distribution compared to 53/47, lower weight so better for twisty roads, better gearbox, better forward view, you can put your roof down, the dual wishbones all around also allow for much more room for tuning were the 86 is more limited in terms of lowering and racy suspension geometry. There is no comparisson, Miata is always the answer!
@@mickeystanic4750 Sure because its a disadvantage. A McPherson strut cannot control wheel geometry changes under compression as good as a double wishbone setup. It also restricts you when lowering your car. Thirdly you have a much worse roll center. There's a reason racecars use them.
FYI, the MX-5 Sport Package costs $4,500US south of the border, so more that $1,000 more than the Canadian price. A Club trim car in red ($600US additional) with the Sport Package is a $37,300US proposition with destination fee and without the additional dealer markup which has become ubiquitous in the US car market.
Subscribed! Love both but neither would be a good family car. I use my miata as my fun everyday commuter, weekend, and everything car. 4 door cars are plentyful, I have a baby due in September - I'll get whatever used 10k-20k gas or electric 4 door car/suv and it'll be better than a sports car or just borrow my wife's civic.
In the Philippines, going MX-5 is a no-brainer. In other countries they're priced around the same, but in our country both GR86 and BRZ are priced significantly higher. US$35k for the Mazda, $43k for the twins. And that's non-negotiable. For the whole country
What engine is in the MX5? perhaps that's why it's significantly less expensive. Here in north America, we only get the 2.0L engine in the MX5 but I believe there's a smaller engine available for other markets around the world.
@@MGReviewsBlog not sure if my comment got deleted by YT, but eh. In the Philippines, we got the 158 hp for the ND1, 181 hp for the ND2. I believe we're in ND3 now since they're offering the KPC. About the twins, considering that the previous 86/BRZs were around the same price as the MX-5 here (US$35k) one would presume that the 2022 GR86/BRZ would be the same prices, but nope. I contacted Toyota Corporate Philippines about this and they couldn't give me a straight answer - saying it's a result of a "confidential internal research" on why they came up with that price. On a country with less than $10k yearly salary average? Ridiculous lmao. Sorry for the rant. Great video. it just hurts me that these are being marketed as "affordable sports cars" but they're so difficult to get.
@impreza0109 ah ok, so the Philippines have the same engine as the one here in North America. But don't worry, I can understand your frustration with dealerships. We had (somewhat have) the same issue here with the twins (and other cars) with ridiculous dealership markups and bogus fees.
@@MGReviewsBlog it's still pricey, but I'll probably go MX-5 once I finish my savings soon. Can go no wrong with either car if just pure driving joy is only being considered. It's just that the twins here are soooo expensive. Thanks~
The Miata been Auto Racing since it came out 30 years ago . Go to any SCCA Racing event you will see. I drove one the other day Red & beige interior 6 Speed Manual Transmission Was so fun
I would recommend to compare BRZ vs MX-5 Miata since the BRZ is tuned more for the street like the miata. GR86 is too firm for the street and not as comfortable as the BRZ.
So strange everyone keeps comparing the Mx 5 to the Gr86.I own a new Mx 5 and if you actually buy one with your own money and drive it on a sunny day only you would understand that these 2 cars are great but should never be compared. Also ask and real driver who makes the best sports car of all time and if they dont pick the Mx 5 it will be in the conversation but the Gr 86 will not.
Yea it's a bummer. But from my understanding, you can ask your local dealership to get the technicians to turn that feature off. I friend of mine did that for his GR86.
Nah the painted finish on door sills of mx5 is really chinzy and cheap is a real put off scratch like crazy. The 86 more goodies in it more room. More to offer.
@@philmelb1022 Still cheap looking even if they have more goodies, much of which are superfluous for a sports car. I think the painted sills on the mx5 depend on what color the car is. I would hate white sills being in my peripheral vision but the gray looks great. They don't scratch easily at all either, you'd have to be pretty clumsy to do so.
I have also heard about hood shake at highway speeds...? And is a Subaru boxer motor as good as the Mazda motor for long term ownership like ten years+ and 100k miles???
I was between the MX-5 and the GR86 myself, but with Greece prices there is really no choice. The base miata costs 28.7k (ok it’s the 1.5 ofc) while the base GR86 in Greece for some reason costs 53.4k…

The joy was soon turned into disappointment as the clutch was heavy for a small sports car & turbo lag had me hating the test drive as in traffic that clutch was terrible. I did like the roadster convertible feeling though. So the next day ( Saturday ) it was drizzling about 40 degrees & I checked the local Mazda dealer online showed 3 MX-5s. So I grabbed a Salesguy as he was heading inside to escape the drizzle / cold. Out on their outside tarmac was a Artic White 2016 Club soft top with the Brembo brakes / BBS wheels with the black ground effects. That would be my test drive. Top down drizzling with the side windows up & the heater on full heat. All the things I hated about that 124 Abarth were attributes on the MX-5 ! Super light clutch & the shifter was easy to hit every gear. Instant throttle response in every gear ! What a difference ! After the test drive we went inside he got the manager to do the details but I said I needed more time. So that manager gave me the rest of the weekend to test drive it. I left my trade in the parking lot while I fully tested the MX-5 Club & he said to stop in after work to make a decision. I drove 240 miles on every highway every good road I could think of. I was there at the Mazda dealer after work with my checkbook to pay the balance left after my trade in. 5 years of daily driving this car in a 4 season climate, absolutely the best car I've owned in over 50 years of driving !
@@ag4allgoodas much as I love my Abarth, I would never buy a Mazda Miata. Most people have no idea what an Abarth is and they think my car costs $60 to $80K and that would never happen with a Miata. Your comment about the clutch pressure is ridiculous as the transmission and clutch assembly is the same robust, tried and true unit found in the NC and did not suffer the catastrophic failures of the early ND transmissions which obviously was an inferior unit. The turbo lag is easily addressed with a Phase Two tune and the extra 60+ horsepower gained means I can run away and hide from any stock Miata even an ND2. With its sexy Itiaian body work, turbo charged engine, amazing sounding Record Monza exhaust system and limited production numbers the Abarth 124 Spider is one of the most unique, affordable sport cars in the world.
The gr86 has a faulty engine. The engine is known to magically produce sealant gunk and block the oil passage. This was an issue in the first gen and an issue on this gen.

Very well done, systematic review. No mention of the cup holders on the mx5 BUT, BUT the fact is if you are an intelligent person who values your time then you drive when you are driving and eat and drink in a restaurant even if it is a fast food place. MULTITASKING like driving and drinking (cup holders) are a stupid marketing ploy. I only multitask as a matter of work and or efficiency. When I am driving my MX5 (NC) I am fully engaged in the driving and the drive is preferably with the top down. If you need an analogy, would you be in bed with JLO or you pick (hot chick) and be texting or drinking or multitasking (out side ) the reality of the high performance sports vehicle in front of you? Both instances use your head and stick.........shift.
Haha Thanks! I thought just showing the cup holders would be pretty obvious so no need to deep dive into how they can be moved around from one position to another. Plus as you said, this is a driver's car first and foremost.
I keep watching new videos of the gr86 and all of them say, compare, and do the same thing in each video... This is not one of the best videos out there.
12:48 the Miata looks like you are sitting in a miserable bucket. The windshield is too close to your head, your knees are hitting the dash, the seats do no recline back enough. They should have designed it better.
@@bigmacdaddy1234 I'd like to see how he fits in a Mazda 3 (front seat). I'd be really pro that car except it too has some turbo caused oil dilution problems. (No probs in the non-turbo engine.)
TY Mac Daddy ! For being so tall ! I got a great deal on my 2016 MX-5 Club soft top with Brembo / BBS package probably because guys being too tall / need more room / hate the small trunk ! Its interior is not for everyone as it fits more like a driving glove. That is what made me like the car so much. Its focused on the driver with no extra driving aids that turned me off on my 2014 Accord Coupe V6 with manual 6 speed. The collision avoidance system it had was a PITA ! It kept going off around turns like a backseat driver that had 3 Monster drinks ! Disable it & there on the dash is a brilliant amber light. No Honda ! That is not what I want in my car ! So this would be the car I trade in for a 2016 MX-5 Club. The MX-5 is a focused drivers car with all the basic stuff but NOTHING that ever annoyed me. My passenger seat is often catching the overflow from the trunk ! It has work arounds that make the car special.
Here in France, a GR86 is much more expensive. So i chose the MX-5 as my daily even it's not very practical, i have no regrets, it's so much fun ! And the interior quality is nicer than the toyota.
To be fair it's not the car per say but that stupid eco tax... second hand should get better. Politics are killing the market, crazy...

Thank you! I should try out the BRZ and see how the subtle tweaks compare to the GR86...
Very good review. Some good comments from fellow enthusiasts on why they prefer one over the other. I just picked up a 2021 club soft top and also have a 2022 gr86….absolutely love them both.
Thank you! So which car do you prefer more? Which one do you find yourself reaching for the keys more often?
Haha, that's one way of looking at things. Or another is to flip a coin.
I love it.

WOW! I am totally impressed by your video production. Camera work, information and comparison was just superb. Thank you so much. I am currently shopping these two cars, and possibly something from Honda like the SI or Sport Touring hatchback. @@MGReviewsBlog Would you get one of these as your only car? I drive about 6000 miles a year, a lot of it in the city.
@Danny I would love to get the MX5 but I'm too tall for it 😭
I had an RF for 5 years and only recently flipped it for a 2022 BRZ.
Yea practicality and space are the biggest issues with the Mazda. How's the BRZ been so far?

It won't more body roll in the Miata, but I'd still lean towards it. Can't trust the 86/BRZ due to engine oil issues.
Appreciate your videos, keep up the good work!
Thank you! Glad you like them!
The 86 looks nice but it's kind of mainstream and boring looking. The MX-5 is really a looker, especially the RF variant. I would say the MX-5 has better looking interior as well as better interior material.
I agree with you on everything you said, but the interior space is difficult to live with. That’s the only reason I’m choosing the Toyota.
At the moment the GR86 doesn't feel as mainstream as the FRS/GT86. Not that many around. But I get what you mean. Once more of them arrive at dealerships then it'll be like the Tesla Model 3 of sports cars. They'll be everywhere.
miata always right
The nappa leather interior on the MX5 is very premium looking with the nappa on the dash, looks like a far more expensive car.
@@heroictesticles6870 Not really. GR86 looks quite premium in and out in person.
Dang it, I did forget that. Thanks!
I agree. If I had that car, I wouldn't really use it as transporting multiple passengers. It's essentially a 2-seater.
Uu
I will say one thing. I personally would regret it simply because of the convertible aspect.
I did a review of that one a couple months ago: ruclips.net/video/bqFL8IOHLls/видео.html
I personally really liked the 2.0L Supra and if I had a budget like that car demands, then I'd be going for it.

That 86 better be very good or I can see myself already trowing it away to get a miata
i test drove both over the weekend, the 86 felt CHEAP, especially the clutch and shifter feel compared to the MX5
I plan to use a mx 5 gt as a daily drive do I need to change the stock tyres or do they come with all season tyres
I'm not sure what tires the MX5 GT comes with but this GS-P trim that i reviewed had Bridgestone summer tires. They should last you a reasonable amount of time but if you plan on using the MX-5 during the winter months, a good set of winter tires is a must.

@@MGReviewsBlog I am on my Fifth one since 2011.
@@randyvining8101 Soft Top or RF today?
@@t.k.morris always a soft top for me.
The gr86 just looks better in my opinion.
I like how they both look.
here in Brazil we dream of both
We do too here in Canada 😄
If you can live with the smaller space the Miata will always be the better sportcar. Much better suspension, double wishbones all around compared to the McPherson of the 86, 50/50 weight distribution compared to 53/47, lower weight so better for twisty roads, better gearbox, better forward view, you can put your roof down, the dual wishbones all around also allow for much more room for tuning were the 86 is more limited in terms of lowering and racy suspension geometry.
There is no comparisson, Miata is always the answer!
"Miata has 4 wheel wishbone suspension where GR86 is Mcpherson". ?!? What kind of a half ass info is that ? 😀
@@mickeystanic4750 All GT86 and GR86 have McPherson front struts and dual wishbone in the rear.
@@benistingray6097 Yes I know but you omitted to say that to make your argument stronger.😀
@@mickeystanic4750 Sure because its a disadvantage. A McPherson strut cannot control wheel geometry changes under compression as good as a double wishbone setup. It also restricts you when lowering your car. Thirdly you have a much worse roll center.
There's a reason racecars use them.
@@benistingray6097 Yes, it's a well known fact. You did not mention that 86 has the DWS at the back... thought that was unfair.
I cant pick one, I want both! :D
Right!? Such a difficult choice
I meant that it's also around $4,400 in the US but in US currency. I should have made that more clear. My bad
Thanks~
both great but having a 2019 rf. w 181 hp. stick. sounds great and 2nd gear rips.
That console button and cup holders location is NOT a good idea :(
I actually live in South Surrey! May I know where are those 2 places? Thanks!
I shot them around the buildings near the Walmart distribution center near 24th ave & 192 st
Yes, I've been wanting to review the BRZ (and other Subaru vehicles) but I haven't been able to get access to their press fleet here in Vancouver :(
BRZ is soft and has lazy throttle response.
Buy 1 and lease 1 both very affordable and definitely fun cars unless you can get type R because that’s true fun
Started liking the gr86 until I found out it was fake exhaust sounds coming through the radio.
Yea it's a bummer. But from my understanding, you can ask your local dealership to get the technicians to turn that feature off. I friend of mine did that for his GR86.
The MX5. It’s super super reliable and the interior Quality is superior ……. The Toyota interior is 1990s plastic explosion 💥
Nah the painted finish on door sills of mx5 is really chinzy and cheap is a real put off scratch like crazy.
The 86 more goodies in it more room. More to offer.
But the 86 has the alcantara above the steering wheel on dash!
The 86 and brz might have more space and practically but considering the rtv issue with those cars u are better off with the mx-5.
I have also heard about hood shake at highway speeds...? And is a Subaru boxer motor as good as the Mazda motor for long term ownership like ten years+ and 100k miles???
Well, the Miata wins... why? It was purchasable. Plus: M I A T A is always the answer! However no we don't have a choice couldn't buy the GR.
I was between the MX-5 and the GR86 myself, but with Greece prices there is really no choice. The base miata costs 28.7k (ok it’s the 1.5 ofc) while the base GR86 in Greece for some reason costs 53.4k…
Where’s the empty street on the video with lots of skid marks? Looks like a great place to practice driving in. I’m guessing Surrey or Langley?
A local?! Yes, it's in Campbell Heights business park near the Walmart distribution center. It's not completely empty as there is quite a bit of truck traffic from the warehouse.
@@MGReviewsBlog of course! Thanks for the location. I also really like Belcarra and Annmore area I see on your videos. Maybe I’ll run into you some day. Good work on the videos!
I learned very quickly not to use the door cupholder on the 86 :D
Offf, big spill?
MIATA is ALWAYS the answer
It would be great if you did a story about the Toyota Oil spill crisis. 2009-2010 1.8 liter motors and the 2.4 liter motor burned oil terribly. My 2009 Corolla burned 5 quarts of oil every 5,000 miles. So my one car was spilling 3.75 gallons of oil into the environment every year. Look up 2.4 liter class action lawsuit. They did not even acknowledge the 1.8 liter had same issues. My motor was 1.8 liter. Almost 4 gallons spilled every year times how many cars with 1.8 liter and 2.4 liter motors. It may be bigger than Exxon Valdez spill. Please do investigative report on the Toyota oil spill.
Sorry but I don't do that sort of investigative journalism. I just review cars. As well, this Toyota GR86 uses a Subaru engine.
@@MGReviewsBlog Good thing Sub's never have oil problems. Just kidding, to be fair they have fixed their gasket problem for several years now.
@@peaceonearth8693 I'm not too familiar with Subaru engines but I just read an article that Toyota is not going to warranty an engine that was recently taken to a trackday. Apparently it had excess gasket material in the oil pickup.
Edit, here's the article: www.thedrive.com/news/toyota-gr86-owners-are-reporting-serious-engine-issues-but-toyotas-not-talking
Just to make it clear, I'm not bashing this or other Subaru engines. Just mentioning what I read today.
@@MGReviewsBlog Thanks for your response to my previous comment. To the current thread I'll add that there is a lot of this kind of thing going around. It's almost endemic with big business. In my own case Toyota screwed-up a recall but I guess that's life. I hope it's not too much of a faux pas to add a link that's very relevant to this oil issue. It's from right here on RUclips. ruclips.net/video/B0NwnbVN1cw/видео.html
@@peaceonearth8693 Just to keep this thread going haha, Toyota announced today that they are indeed going to be replacing the engine of that GR86 owner that took the car to a trackday. No mention if they'll do the same for other owners who may be having this issue.
How tall are you and how did you fit in the Miata?
Never mind, should of finished the video before asking.
haha, no worries.
Hardtop vs convertible comparison.
Not equal company to compare.
Best advice, buy a used Miata and you will save lots of money. The NC is the best
3:40 Look at the frown he has in the Toyota. 3 seconds later in the MX-5, smile. There you have it.
Lol 7:03 somebody’s been having fun on that road
Haha, yea quite a few have. It's a brand new road in an industrial area with only one warehouse nearby.
I don't get it. I'm 6'3" and my head was hitting the roof in the ND, yet at 6'4" he can get a helmet on?! Perhaps he's slouching in the seat to fit?
I do have a problem with sloughing from time to time haha, but I did have the seat to its lowest position and the backrest reclined as much as possible so perhaps that's why you hit your head?
it's about how tall your torso is versus your in seam, I have the torso of a 6'4" person and the legs of a 5'10" person 😂, but I'm 6'2". There's no way I fit with a helmet
Im a big fan of mx5 . I use to own one in 1990s.
I now have a 2016 mustang gt vert.
But from your review ill buy the 86 over mx5.
More bang for your buck.
Yep, price is a big drawback of the MX5 if opting for the higher trim levels.
I take it you’ve never driven an S2000. Best gearbox ever.
Unfortunately no :( I want to after so many people tell me how good it is.
If I'm in the market for a disposable "sports car" (which I am BTW) then I'm not going to buy a car where the majority of the owners are high school to mid-twenties squids. That would be the GR86. Add some coil-overs and sway bars and it's the Miata GT rag top for the win.
both are winners
I agree!
I own the Abarth 124 Spider variant.
How is it with the turbo engine? I haven't had a chance to drive one yet.
I had a 2017 Spider for 4 years & from day one nothing but problems & this is why Fiat stopped selling with lower & lower sales every year & inferior quality. I traded it in for the 2021Mazda MX5 & after one & half years with not a single problem. FIAT / FIX IT AGAIN TONY, again & again.
@@robertmiller1442 I have a 2019 and have not had a single problem. Sorry you had a bad experience but that does not make all the Fiat variants bad cars. I now have a few bolt ons and a Phase Two tune. The car produces over 225 horsepower and 235 ft. lbs. of torque, and I eat MX5s for dinner. They are in my rear-view mirror by the time I finish 2nd gear. The turbo engine makes the Abarth a very desirable car because of the ease of getting more power out of it. My next step is to upgrade the turbo to the 1446+ which bolts right on and adds another 20+ horsepower and 20+ ft. lbs. of torque. You can't do that to the Mazda...
@@Kstxrd It was a video review of a 2017 Fiat 124 Spyder Abarth that had me going to a local dealer. It was the 1st week of March 2017 & the dealer had a sharp White 124 Abarth with Black trim & Brembo brakes. Loved the way the interior looked too with the Red tachometer & nice seats. Stopped by after work on a sunny 60 degree day. After the test drive we went inside he got the manager to do the details
but I said I needed more time.
Yes, I found out about it in the GR86 almost a week after I posted the video.
2:43 I think that liters are converted to gallons incorrectly.
I just double checked and they look ok to me. Which conversion do you think is wrong?
@@MGReviewsBlog oops, my wrong. I calculated it liter with gallon without miles

You're almost as pale as I am
Haha, the sun and I have a love/hate relationship.
In fairness, I am too tall for the car. In my opinion, all the car needs is another inch or two in the wheelbase to allow for more legroom.
@@MGReviewsBlog Agreed. Mazda should have definitely added two more inches and everything would be much better.
It probably would have added 20lbs to the car to extend the wheelbase by an inch. That's a trade I'd make all day long (I'm 6'3").
