There are two ways to make a summer sports car. There’s the Mini way which is to take a two door coupe and chop the roof off. Or there’s the Mazda way which is to start from the ground up with a convertible design and then add the hard top later on. But of the two, which way is better?
Between the two, the 2022 Mini JCW Cooper has the more powerful engine. It is a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder that produces 228 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque (170 kW & 319 Nm). The 2021 Mazda MX5 Miata is powered by a 2.0L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder that has to make due with 181 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque (135 kW & 205 Nm). The Mini has low-end torque from the turbocharged engine while the Miata 2021 likes to be revved because that’s where all the power is.
Interestingly, the Mazda MX-5 2021 has a faster 0-100 km/h time. It can complete the sprint in just under 6 seconds while the 2022 Mini JCW Convertible takes just over 6 seconds. This is partially down to the RWD vs FWD layout of the cars but mainly due to the weight of both cars. The Mazda MX-5 Miata tips the scales at 1,066 kg (2,350 lbs) with the 6-speed manual transmission while the Mini Convertible weighs 1,415 kg (3,119 lbs). But over a long distance - say a quarter mile - the Mini JCW 2022 would begin to catch up and overtake the Mazda.
The 2021 Mazda MX-5 GS-P starts at $37,200 CAD ($30,290 USD) and this demo vehicle is equipped with the Sport Package which adds the Brembo brakes, black alloy wheels, and Recaro seats. The as tested price is $43,650 CAD ($35,255 USD). Ironically, the 2022 Mini John Cooper Works Convertible has a starting price of where this MX5 Miata ends; $43,640 CAD ($38,900 USD). But this is not a standard JCW Mini 2022 and as such it has quite a few options on it. The total as tested price is $56,530 CAD ($45,650 USD).

I’ve owned two Miatas, a 1999 10AE and 2011 PRHT, and two MINIs, an ‘03 MCS and my current ‘22 JCW Convertible. I owned the 99 and 03 at the same time. Forcing a choice between the two can only be done based on how each meets your personal needs since each is fantastic and everyone sees each as a fit to their needs differently. I always found the Miatas a bit uncomfortable on long drives. Yet, many people travel the country in them. But, give me a Miata on a windy road any day. Brilliant. The MINIs are more comfortable for me and I love having the extra space in a smaller car. Give me the MINI for power, tech and comfort anytime. Maybe the answer is, get one of each :-)

My daily driver is a 2017 Mx5 ND RF Club with Michelin Pilot Sports one size up from stock. While it can be a challenge to get my 75 year old bones into it, I absolutely love this car! So much fun and cheap on gas. The last car I owned that was this much fun was a 1958 Alfa Giulietta roadster with a 0-60 of about 16 seconds and it was always in the shop.
The Consumer Reports Buying Guide that I have on hand (2020) gives the Mx5 a rating 79, and the Mini a rating of 70. Historically the Mx5 also has much better reliability than the Mini.
Don't want to rub this in, but I have owned a few British cars, and... well lets just say their shop time was about the same as my Italian cars.

Both the MX-5 and the MINI are fantastic! The MX-5 is one of the best and most beautifully designed sports car and I'm including Ferraris and Porches. However, I bought a 2 door 2022 MINI Cooper S hardtop because I need back seats and the storage room! In the hard top, there is plenty of leg room in the back and it's really easy to get in and out. It has 186 hp so it's fast enough and the handling is so tight, that is one of the most fun drives I ever experienced. I love the design of the MX-5 and if I could afford 2 cars I'd get them both. But the MINI is also the faster car as it often wins the IMSA TC Touring car races and one the constructors championship 2 years in a row. At 90% stock the John Cooper Works MINI regularly beats the MX-5 (The JCW even beat a Porsche Cayman once) on the race track. Not that I'd race against a Miata but I know I can if I wanted to. ;-)

The Miata is the only true sports car left. Very light, nimble and no gimmicks. Everything else on the market is heavy, compensating with bigger engines to make more power, and loaded with bloatware (tech gimmicks)... a shadow of fun cars of yesteryear.

    • @josephvincello8962

I agree, although I’d say as of 2023, the Miata value proposition has really declined, imagine an RF Club going for $40k, then think of all the extra hardware and tech JCW includes for the same-ish price.

@@josephvincello8962 Don't get the RF; (unless you really just want your miata to be your only car and you commute on the highway) it's an absurdly expensive option for this car, and it's a compromise of the entire premise of a 2-seater convertible. MSRP on a soft top club is 32-33kish, 35k out the door for a new, reliable, easy-to maintain sports car is about as good as you're going to get. What else are you comparing it to in the same space that the value proposition doesn't look favorable?

And I experienced here in Germany with 30 + years of MX 5 - experience, that most cars give up against a MX 5 after a very short fight... What is hard work in almost every other car is childs play in any MX 5 especially the 1., 2. and 4. gen`s.

Fantastic review. MX5 all day long!!!
I own the very same one only mine is finished in the rare Jet Black Mica (drop-dead gorgeous!). Not that the Black Mica is rare, but combined with the Sports Package, well good luck finding one!
As you mentioned, the Sport Package will cost you an additional $4400 (Canadian) but if you price the BBS wheels ($7096.17), Brembo brakes ($5650), Recaro seats ($5551.13) and the Bilstein suspension ($1100.43) individually, that additional $4400 is a no brainer!
I know those prices sounds ridiculous so please don't take my word for it, price them individually yourself and then add the 13% tax (Canada). I know that no one in their right mind would buy each piece individually, but it sure puts things into perspective doesn't it!
In any event, my wife and I narrowed our search down to the either the Mini or the MX5 so your review is very fitting. After test driving both, the MX5 came out on top by a long shot!
We are not rich by any means so almost $50k a very significant amount of money to spend on a summer toy "BUT", no regrets whatsoever! Our beautiful MX5 lives mostly in the garage. We take it out on sunny days, and only if the pavement is bone dry. So far, it's been driven 12,311 kilometers (7648 miles) and I can assure you that each one of those miles has put a HUGE smile on our face!
I highly, HIGHLY recommend the MX5 with the Sport Package. It's pricey but when compared to "ANY" other new sports car, you won't find a better bargain, PERIOD! Take it from a man who actually spent his hard earned dollar to buy one. You won't be sorry man, I promise!
Now obviously, this is not our daily driver. Mine is a Ram Sport (love it) and my wife drives a Malibu.
Initially, we bought a new 2019 Can Am Spyder F3 Limited however we sold it last year after we bought the MX5. After covid, I actually sold it for the very same amount that I paid for it "brand new" tax in. Albeit, we only drove it 3900 kilometers.
After riding 2 wheels for over 40 years, I was very leery about switching over to 3 wheels, but that was the only way that my wife felt safe enough to ride with me. I gotta say the F3 limited was a blast to ride. It's a completely different animal when compared to any motorcycle, but in a good way. I would go so far as to say that I should 'of bought one a long time ago. It really is THAT good!
If I could afford it, I would keep both the Spyder and the MX5 but as they say, you could only drive one toy at a time. Again, the MX5 wins hands down!
So kudos to you my friend for posting yet another FANTASTIC review. You're not afraid to call a spade a spade. You say it as it is, like it or not, no B.S. I also really enjoy your comic relief bud. Hat's off to you man, great job!

I have to admit as a Mini JCW owner I am always tempted by the looks of the mx-5, particularly the mx-5rf, however when I did test drove the RF with the notion of switching brands I came away not wanting to switch. The Miata for me had too many downsides. The biggest, I felt much safer in the JCW on the highway driving 80 or 85 miles an hour. The JCW felt much quicker to gain that speed, was more stable and when trucks or large SUVs went by and the Miata seemed to be at their mercy and the JCW not as much. The next was space. When I travel for a vacation with my wife I like to go in a sports car not her luxury vehicle. Probably most do this in reverse but since I do all the driving I want the driving to be fun so the sports car and I could not imagine how one goes away with two people for a week or two in the Miata. Lastly as a mountain biker I need to be able to carry my bike to the trails. I thought I could use a suction cup roof mount bike carrier I saw on line. It was fitted on a mustang and this guy flew down a bumpy road and the bike was as stable as could be. Unfortunately the roof on the RF is not solid enough. Pushing lightly with you hand on the metal roof panel it depresses, so a suction mounted rack was not going to happen. Mazda has no trailer hitch mounting kit so that avenue, although not a great one, still would not work. Concerning the two cars on twisty roads, both are a ton of fun. My JCW is configured with the manual shifter. In this area it was a toss up. Of course I am very accustomed to front wheel drive vehicles and not rear. If I would have adjusted fully to a rear wheel car my feelings may have changed but in the test drive I took on along country back road with plenty of twists I enjoyed both equally. In terms of pure sports car looks, my vote is the Miata RF. Love its looks! On the other hand the mini is also a fantastic looking car but not as "pure sports car" as the Miata, which is why I had been eyeing them. In the end the JCW hit too many of my needs and just for a slightly more "sports car" look I was not going to switch cars and loose so much.

Starting around the 8-minute mark when discussing storage in the MX-5, no mention of the cubby behind each seat was made. Utilizing those two for infrequently used items and moving the flat repair kit to the cubby in the trunk where a jack could also live greatly adds to the storage capacity of the Miata.

Enjoyed your review (and comedy!) I've owned a MINI Paceman S. Over the life of the vehicle, the MINI began to use more oil between oil changes and was no longer capable of making it the full 10,000 miles between synthetic oil changes. I'm told by dealer mechanics that this is typical of these BMW engines. As far as MINI convertibles go, I've never seen the point of the 4 seat convertible. Those rear seats look like only a place for small dogs or toddlers. Why bother??? The best MINI convertible EVER was their 2 seat Roadster, which they discontinued (along with my Paceman). IMO, they can ditch the 4 seat convertible and bring back the Roadster. It was truly the miniest MINI!
As for me, my dollars do the talking. I own a 2017 Miata RF GT, and I'm very happy with it. I'd buy another. Former convertibles I've owned?

I have a 2021 MX-5 ST Club. It’s a great car, but it is not as high end as a Mini. The reliability is a true plus. Still, I enjoy driving it and look forward to getting in each time I have someplace to go. The Recaro seats make a huge difference and being short, there is more than enough room. I actually added a thick supportive seat cushion to boost me up a touch.
To me the next step up would be a late model used Porsche Boxster or a Z4. I had a 2010 Z4 and it’s a close call in terms of which car I like better with the 10-yr old Z4 a more comfortable ride with high and better at high speeds, but the more nimble and energetic Mazda winning at anything below 65.
The Mazda is also less prestigious of a name than BMW, Porsche or even Mini, but the fact that is more fun and practical reflectis how good the car is.

I guess I'm the odd one of the bunch here. I've owed a 2021 MX5 for about a year and half but with my aging body and less lack of agility now, I recently sold it and purchased the Mini Cooper convertible. I very much enjoyed the Miata but the small size has made me re-think things and went to the Mini, where I am much happier now.
The Mazda was well built and glad I had my time with one. Was fun and I think a very sexy looking roadster for the money.
I do wish Mazda would stretch and widen the MX5 and probably add a turbo. I have to say I've enjoyed both cars but like I said already, age has pushed me into a much happier place for me in the Mini.

JCW surprisingly not a bad value compared to Miata or Miata RF Club. More power, more space, much more tech.
JCW also has a longer warranty and free scheduled maintenance.
For some reason, Mini Convertible reviewers never fold the rear seat, space is a prime consideration among convertible intenders.
FYI, Miata has additional storage in hidden compartments behind seats.
PS - I like your no nonsense presentation, I especially appreciate the lack of the fake hoots and laughs most reviewers do during acceleration - it was fun when Top Gear did it 25 years ago, now it’s just fake and irritating.
PSS - no more of the self-deprecating manboob jokes, no one is perfect, and once you said it, I couldn’t unsee it. And then you kept coming back to it.
Otherwise keep up the good work.

I bought it used over a year ago with a 4-pipe Remus exhaust system, so it sounds better than the original. I use it as a daily driver, and I’ve only had to replace the tires. The resale on it is higher than what I paid. Try that with a used Mini.

I bought a 2.0 litre MX5 RF for my wife 3 years ago and she hated it. I loved it. The only car ever (and we have had many over nearly 50 years of driving) that I drove just for the love of it. We have recently changed it for a 1.5 Cooper Sport 5 door with a few extras, so not a direct comparison with the video, but what stands out for me is that the Mazda was fun, fun, fun, lightweight and a true driver’s car. However, it had a few shortcomings in terms of refinement. The MINI on the other hand, can’t touch the Mazda for thrills, but it is head and shoulders over the Mazda on quality. Plus 4 seats, much better practicality and toys galore (which you have to pay extra for, but still massively cheaper than the MX’s revised pricing policy). I see the MINI as a second car, the Mazda as a third car for weekends - not very practical, too small, it creaks and rattles a bit, it is not that fast, but boy, is it fun - for the driver, not for the passenger!

I was on the point of buying a JCW convertible but the salesman suddenly increased the price by £4K and I walked away. I was a tiny bit pleased because I love my MX5 and didn’t want to lose it…the mini lives in Northern Ireland, we have a home there, I want us to keep that mini forever.
I would buy an MX5 ND in a heart beat if it had the characteristics of mine but I suspect it’s not as good in some respects, body roll, storage, lousy paint colours…I’d want red and that Mazda red is the absolute pits. The design is also a bit aggressive, mine smiles at me when I open the garage door. I will probably have a JCW convertible and keep it until we’re both ancient. My wife has a Cooper bought new 5 years ago and she likes it very much, however I want a higher spec…better seats like the JCW.

Had a 2006 silver Mini convertible and changed that for a 2016 1.5 MX5 icon edition in same grey colour as the review car. This review spot on and agree with comments. Mini better for space as can use back seats. MX5 can surprisingly carry a lot but you do need to plan your packing! Interior - MX5 very minimalistic; Mini - very retro. You are tighter in the MX5 obviously. Driving - MX5 better on every level. Looks - the MX5, being rarer on the road gets more attention and looks like a proper sports car. Mini - liked the look of the first gen model, the front end of the new gen doesn't look right. Just a personal opinion though. Finally, my partner's opinion 😁? She wished I kept the mini as more space but she cannot drive so will never understand ITS ALL ABOUT THE DRIVING DYNAMICS. The Mazda MX-5 $th generation has driving dynamics that the mini just does not have. I’ve had 2 mx5 NBs and an R56 CooperS - hatch . The mini was a fab go kart and a great mix of style and torque propelled speed. The mx5 is much slower, but the way the back end slides, it’s lightness and steering feel make it the more involving on country lanes B roads in UK . The new mini as tested here is just so much heavier and I drive a 3 series BMW with same gearbox and auto - that combo gives great pace but the weight and space between the gears make it much less involving . I would choose an mx5 any day to do the stelvio pass, but it would be murder driving there in a NB - 2000rpm per 20mph in top gear! The mini is the more refined and better all round car but the Mazda is the best on those hairpins .

In April, I bought an older MX5 NC 1.8 in very good condition. For the first three months, I was absolutely thrilled with it. Suddenly I was annoyed that it was not very comfortable and practical for daily commuting. More and more often I was looking for a reason to use a VW Arteon on the way to work. And in August I ordered a new Mini JCW convertible. Delivery date March 2022! The reason I chose the Mini. If you buy an expensive toy - a convertible, you want to play with it every day from spring to autumn.

Wow, March 2022!?!? The microchip shortage is really affecting BMW/Mini. But congrats on your order! Hopefully it gets there sooner for you :)

I think a more relative comparison would have been the MX-5 vs a MINI S. The JCW is a pocket rocket. I should know as I currently have as a summer toy a 2021 MINI S cabriolet, but I owned a 2016 MINI JCW for 3 years as my daily. That was my favorite car of all time. It’s more performance oriented than the S. Having said that, I’m on the verge of switching out my 2021 cabriolet S for a 2023 Mazda MX-5 RF. I think it’s more playful and toss-able than the S (I’ve also owned a 2001 and 2009 Miata, so I’ve also had a soft spot for them as well). Both MINI’s Aand MX-5’s are great cars!

@@MGReviewsBlog To the best of my recollection, the only annoyance with my 2016 JCW during my 3 years of ownership was due to the low profile run flat tires. 4 tire changes due to hernias as a result of potholes on our fine streets of Montreal. The 2021 Cabriolet I’ve only driven 2,000 (😳) or so kilometres, so no issues there. I also owned a 2019 JCW MINI Countryman for almost 3 years; no problems of any importance.

To drive, it is. It gives you more feedback through the steering wheel & seat as to what the car is doing. Plus you can drift it if you want 😉

If only Mazda makes it the size of Z4. I have Mazda 3 2021 and getting inside Miata is very uncomfortable. It's way too small and dangerous to drive on the roads full of SUV's. And the trunk space is pretty much none existent. Z4 doesn't have those problems having the same form factor.

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  2 года назад

I don't think the car needs to be as big as the Z4. Like I said in the video, it just needs about one inch or so of legroom and I'd be perfectly happy with it.

Problem with the MX 5 if you are petite like 5ft the drivers seating position is too low and too far from the pedals.

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  2 года назад

Oh? I obviously have the other problem. Is moving the seat more forwards not enough? I understand that the height might be an issue because the seat doesn't have height adjustment.

I got the times from MotorTrend. It makes sense since the MX5 is RWD and lighter so it's easier to launch but the JCW will beat it to 1/4 mile with a much higher trap speed.
