I have a 22 plate RF 2 litre GT Sport Tech. Superb car, great fun, drove from Lancashire to Suffolk and it was incredibly comfy.
At the risk of repeating myself , the MX5 is the only car for me . Firstly , the price means I can afford a new one ( though they are creeping up a bit ) , I drive with the top down all year round , I'm 84 years old now , it's quick enough for me ( the 1.5 engine ) and economy is the same as a boring runabout . what's not to like ? I've had them for 14 years , and I can't remember anyone waving before I started doing it many years ago . A fantastic car !

corinthian. WOW! I'm 67 and have always liked the MX5, but previously been reluctant to get one because of the age thing. This week i have been looking more seriously at it and reading your comment has made me determined to go ahead and buy one. I can't afford a new one mind you, and i will have to sell a couple of my 70s motorbikes, but they say you only live once so sod it, why not? 🙂
@@stevenhill6214 Thank you Steven ! I previously rode bikes , ( the latest a Honda CBR400 RR ) but by 2008 , as a leather jacket and jeans wearer , I got fed up with the inclement English weather . I thought a sports car might be a good compromise , and I've never regretted it . Not the outright acceleration of a bike , but a brilliant car , I'm sure you'll love the MX5 . I'd recommend buying from an approved Mazda dealer, a bit more expensive , but with the multipoint checkup and a warranty , worth it . When driving in light rain , top down , you won't even notice it . Best wishes !
@@Corinthian44 I have watched loads of these reviews and nobody has mentioned if oncoming headlights are a problem at night because the car is so low down. What do you think?
stevenhill 6214 , Yes, you do seem to be in the firing line, mainly from 4 wheel idiots , but it's only for a few seconds ; having said that I don 't do much night driving . I hope you bought one , if you did , I know you'll be enjoying driving it , I still am ! Don't forget , roof down at all times . I've past a few ' top ups' recently , in nice weather ; why ? Regards !

Picked up a brand new one two weeks ago. 1.5 liter. 1200km done already. Best car I've ever had, makes everything else feel like a boat in terms of steering and handling. So much fun at any speed. I'm in love with it!

That Soul Red paint adds 15 more pounds in weight. I have a 2016 Club soft top in Artic White with the Brembo / BBS package & its fantastic. I bought a PPF treatment for the front / side mirrors to keep the rock chips away. I daily drive my car here in the US where its 4 seasons. The best way to take care of your top / interior is to NEVER park around trees. The roof filters will clog the drains & the interior will flood. So far I have been very lucky & the roof drains were very clean by following that rule. Awesome car even without a telescoping steering wheel or that new KHC. The light weight is really under rated. Colin Chapman who headed the Lotus Formula One team in the 60s-70s had the right idea that less is more ! Cheers from across the pond.
Cheers Alan! I didn't know that about the paint weight. So the purest driving MX-5 is not the red one :) Colin Chapman absolutely was right! I find myself talking about car weight in almost every review now, as it make such a huge difference to any car, be it a sports car or a standard hatchback. Thanks for the info!
I'm a factory worker and not a lawyer or anything, so I had to literally work for it to get me a 2016 1,5 in exactly that colour. Had it for less than a week now, and your review is quite recognizable. You just think this car round the corners, you become part of it. I can store it dry and so did the single previous owner, who cared for it in an exceptional way - apart from a few unavoidable stone-chips, it looks and feels like new. Every drive is a short vacation, and the reactions from fellow road-users are unanimously positive. Fuel economy is actually as good as anyone claims, really amazing.

Yep ive just bought a used Rf and to say that i absolutely love it is sn understatement, Im 63, my last car eas a bmw 630i sports coupe which i loved, but the RF is definitely more fun, this car just loves to be driven robustly, its got thr power ehen yoo need it , i love the way the engine literally growls when you accelerate, the road holding is superb , and it looks amazing, inside snd out .I think im in love 😄
I bought nd2 2.0 in June 2020, it's one of the best driving cars I've ever owned. I am pleased with the 184 ps naturally aspirated engine, all this car needed was an cat-back/exhaust update to sound more crispy/racy. It is so nice to drive it both in the city and on mountain passes. It's so comfortable over speed bumps even though I have a sportier version with bilstein shock absorbers. Ride is perfect, not too bumpy, not too soft.
Having both 911 and this, on more ocasions I choose to drive this as it's so much fun.
In every day life and driving, I can imagine it's more useable and fun than a 911. Nice one

After having had a yellow Fiat barchetta for 22 years I bought a new red MX5 1.5 ND. I'm an Italian car design lover (I had several Alfas) but somehow the Fiat 127 spider which effectively is an MX5 didn't turn me on. So I bought the "real thing" instead. Lovely car. Unfortunately, my daughter had a small crash with it (no injuries) but the repair cost was such high that the insurance company recommended to take the rather lofty pay-out instead of getting it repaired. I then bought a red MX5 2.0. A demo car with 4'000km as the lead time on a new one was 6 months. I live in Switzerland which has thousands of kilometers of windy mountian roads. Perfect for an MX5. But I have to say, unless you really need the extra features that come along with the 2.0 version, you don't really need the extra power. Even with the cheaper 1.5 version you'll have enough power to have great driving fun. In fact, the lack of some features makes the 1.5 even more a pure drivers car. When I then see these luxerious BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Porsche convertibles then you realize: the MX5 is the real sportscar. And as a friend once pointed out: the wind in your hair is the same.

I have the 2019 1.5. the 2.0 is a serious car for those who go on track or need good low end torque to cruise with minimal gear changes. But the 1.5 is the sweet spot to have fun on open roads. You can drive it hard (and play with all the rpm range) without going too fast. And the sound is like old roadsters or berlinettes of 60's or 70's. I really love it.

Yep agreed, and exactly how I feel about using all the rev range :) the 1.5 is plenty for public roads, had a lot of fun blasting around in it.
I have the 2.0, and I love it. 1.5 litre models aren’t sold in the US. I’m not sure that the 1.5 would survive our interstate highway system. My daily commute is about a dozen miles each way, and anyone driving below 80 mph would get run over.
I have a 2018 GT model, with the 1.8 and 6-speed manual. I bought it used 2 years ago, and I love it! I love the red, but mine is unique- black with a dark cherry top. It’s my daily driver, and it does quite well throughout South Florida. The roof remains down year round. Yes, it’s noisy on the highway, but my son has a 4-door Mazda3 when we need to drive any distance. I hope Mazda keeps building it, and I’d love to see some competitors one day.

Picked up a brand new MX-5 last December here in Spain...same colour but with the bigger 2.0 engine. Fantastic car and good call by suggesting potential buyers see if they fit the car. I'm 6' 1" and just about fit...but on the RF my head hits the roof as it has slightly less head room (also noisier with the targa type roof down). The car does feel quite snug but I drove it over 500km home from Madrid on the day I bought it without any discomfort- and I am quite broad too. I would have liked to try the Recaro seats tho just for comparisons sake. Only weak spot is the iconic 'Soul Red Crystal' paint is notoriously soft and prone to chipping. Well another down side is I cannot stop driving the thing..so much fun!!
Yes, I think it is a bit smaller inside than the previous MX-5, which did surprise me a bit. That's cool that the long journey was alright though, it is quite a comfy car, just a bit noisy at speed, but that's to be expected. I didn't know that about the paint! :) Make sure you get the top down at every possible opportunity 😄

Nice review. I am a Brit living in the Japanese mountains with a year 2000 nb1 1600. It is definitely not powerful in a straight line, but there aren't any straight lines here anyway ! It is however very good around twisting roads and has amazing steering. Only 34000km on the clock. I have it serviced at the local Mazda garage which recently fixed a wheel alignment problem for me free of charge ! In 6 years only the spark generator has failed (common problem for nb1) and I might get the cam and crank angle sensors replaced next service as the former is causing problems. Otherwise it drives very smoothly, every day. I often have it up to around 6800 rpm, but to be honest there isn't much power there ... but then that isn't the point of the car. I drive all year 'round with summer tyres, with the top down, even in freezing weather. When really cold I keep the windows up, put on the foot heating, and wear a warm hat. When it snows I don't drive it, though I am tempted to try winter tyres and see how it goes. Maybe next year.

Had the 1.5 ND Icon model since 2016. Obviously its rag top.
Apart from torrential rain its always down heated seats and small cockpit mean its cosy even in the winter time
You are correct the car was designed for the 1.5 lump as was the gearbox.
The 2 ltr still uses the 1.5 box and heard a few report of problems with over powering it.
Not common, but seems to be if caned the box is not happy with the extra 500cc and extra gee gees
Last week we clocked up 1200 miles touring Devon on the type of lanes the MX5 was built for 6 days of twisty fun
Averaged 49.9 mpg and we were not just plodding around all the time 4.30 hours on the motor ways going and coming home.
The telescopic column is the best improvement although my brother who's 6.4 bought a column extension made in Italy for his ND which makes it easier for him to get his knees under the wheel.
Obviously there are loads of much quicker cars, but ones that are more fun to drive?

You're a proper MX-5 driver Lee :) Roof down at every possible moment, and lots of trips with proper twisty roads.
That is ridiculously good fuel economy! I did wonder how a person as tall as him would get on - it does seem much less roomy than the NC. I had the seat pretty much all the way back and I'm 6ft 😄. At least he can fit though, just about
Helpful as I'm thinking of switching from an NC. You've also answered my dilemma over engine size - I think the 1.5 is the one and that I don't want the sport suspension. Why they've ditched so much storage room compared to the NC annoys me - surely a couple of door bins at least. Dropping the roof from inside the car is - would you believe - not recommended my Mazda and it causes the roof to rub. But overall - brilliant cars and usable as a daily.

I just got mine, it’s so much better than the hard top. I test drove both and the soft top was an obvious choice 🎉

Bought a brand new one in 2017 and I'm still driving it as my only car in 2023. German spec, 2.0l, 160 hp roadster "Sportsline" with the sports-pack (Recaros, Bilstein dampeners + front strut bar). I've done 115,000km in it now, including many long distance trips (600+ km) on the Autobahn and while I would agree that it's not a GT-car by any means, it's definitely more usable for this sort of stuff than, say, a Lotus Exige or Elise.
It's generally been pretty reliable. According to the TÜV-guy, the body is still impeccable (no obvious rust issues) and the soft-top is still as watertight and well fitting as it was on day one. However... some stuff has gone wrong:
1. I'm on my third windshield now - never the car's fault, just bad luck getting stones/screws/whatever thrown at me by traffic in front of me.
2. Front right wheel-sensor went bad, throwing ESP/ABS out of whack. Car was still under warranty, so no cost to me.
3. Had a tree-branch fall onto my hood at speed, triggering the pedestrian protection system. Again: Not the car's fault. Luckily, that one was covered by my insurance so it only cost me €150 ... the actual repair bill was around €12,000 (no joke) and the car was out of commission for 2 months or so (supply-chain issues due to COVID, dealer couldn't get all the parts - and it is a *ton* of parts that are required for this sort of repair).
4. While that repair was underway, the dealer also discovered that the LSD was on its way out and needed replacement. Car was out of warranty, but my dealer did get Mazda to cover 50% of the parts cost. Bill still amounted to just under €2,000.
5. Last weekend, the driver side window wouldn't come up, so I had to drive around with an open window for 3 or 4 days. Turned out the steel cable of the mechanism had snapped (seems like a common thing with NDs) and needed replacement. Part was around €70, but the repair bill was €360 ... ouch!
All in all, I'm very happy with this car. I've owned a lot of hot hatches before (Audi TT 1.8T Coupé, Lupo GTI, Golf V and VI GTI), so I had to make some compromises WRT practicality, but that's hardly a surprise given the dimensions of the MX-5. I love the car's lightness and nimbleness and the fact that it's got a proper drive-train layout and perfect weight distribution. This thing is so chuckable.
Gripes..? While the cabin is large enough for me (1.81m, 78kg), I do find the lack of storage space a bit annoying. No real glovebox, no door-pockets and while the central storage bin between the seats is surprisingly large, it is hard to get anything out of there quickly. The two pockets behind the seats are nice to have for stuff like first aid kit or high-vis vest, but they are impossible to access while driving.
Other than that:
- 160hp is adequate power I suppose, but I feel like the car could handle more power pretty easily. I've yet to drive the facelift version with the more powerful engine, but I suspect even that could use another boost. 200 to 220 hp might be the sweetspot for this thing.
- The suspension is still a bit too soft, even with the supposedly stiffer Bilstein setup. It's not like the car doesn't grip or handles like a family-car, but overall body movement is a bit too pronounced for my taste. Slightly lowered suspension, stiffer springs and larger anti-roll-bars might do the trick.
- Front and rear brake-calipers are prone to surface rust on my car (I drive it all year round) and look FUGLY. Mazda should really coat these things from the factory or paint them ... or use more rust-resistant steel.
- The cockpit's MFD in my car is still that 1980s/Nintendo Game-and-Watch looking LCD affair and visually a big letdown in the cockpit. I wish mine had the newer color-display they first introduced on the RF. Plus: I'd really love to have an oil-temp and/or pressure gauge in a car like this.
- re the seats: I've tried both variants before I bought and instantly knew I wanted the Recaros once I sat down in them. They grip you tighter on the sides and they feel a bit firmer overall - but not in an uncomfortable way. They're very well suited for long-distance travel as far as I'm concerned plus they look a lot nicer than the stock seats. Highly recommended!

@@JJonCars Yeah... I was *pretty* lucky that this happened while an official storm-warning was in effect. Otherwise a different part of my insurance policy would've been applied and I would've had to pay €1000 or €1500 out of pocket. While the whole thing was extremely annoying (even though the insurance paid for it), I have to be fair: The car did exactly what it was supposed to do (it just couldn't tell a branch from a pedestrian's head ;) ). I don't have the bill in front of me right now, but from the top of my head:
- new bonnet
- new ECU (apparently the old one can't be reset/re-used after this sort of thing)
- probably parts for the actual pedestrian protection system (not 100% sure, but I think it uses pyrotechnics)
- new headlights (the old ones get scratched by the bonnet when the system fires)
- new front fascia (not sure if that one always gets damaged or if it was down to me running over the branch after it had dropped from the bonnet - but it was pretty banged up on my car)
- plus a lot of re-painting
- and a whole lot of man-hours to do all the actual repair work.
I'd read stories from other owners who had this sort of thing happen to them (and from ones with different cars) and they spoke of bills in the €4,000 to €5,000 range, so I was a bit surprised when I saw my actual bill. But, again, could've been that the front fascia/clamshell getting damaged by that hunk of wood increased the bill in this case.
In my part of Australia it's mostly top up and aircon blasting in summer, top down of an evening sometimes. Winter is definitely top down weather here - warm and dry.

I love my RF 2.0 184. I chose the RF because of extra security. Not much extra weight over the roadster, drives really tight.

I think the sport trim package contains Recaro sport seats. The seats in your car are stock.

Hi. I am on my 3rd MX5, all bought new. The first was an NB I bought new in 2004, traded in for new NC roadster (foldy electric roof) in 2007. I kept that for 14 years and loved it - nothing ever failed on that car (or on the NB). In 2001 I traded my faithful NC for the ND2 soft top (I don't consider the RF to be an open car - it's a targa top, which is not for me).
My ND2 is 2 litre, 182 bhp (the MX5 is not a powerful car - so go for the 2 litre!), in Soul Red Crystal Metallic (as you say, the only colour to have!). It is a better car in every way (not least 'looks') than my lovely NC, except one - I disagree with your view that the steering is as good on the ND as the NC.
I do notice it is not as 'talkative' through the wheel as the NC was, especially when the wheel is centered- it's a bit vague around that centre spot compared to the NC. It's not worse by much - the ND is still very good - just not quite up there with the hydraulic rack on the NC.

What young guys never seem to mention--not important (to them) I guess, is how quiet is it, with the top UP? Can you have normal conversation? Can you listen to music? Busy ripping around corners, wind in the hair--maybe not important, but to many of us, who might be in the car for 2, 4, or more hours on a road trip, it matters. And never one word about it.

I look at the Mazda MX-5 much as an affordable Morgan, if that's possible. I hear the Morgan Plus4 uses the MX-5 transmission when ordered with one.

I have been fortunate to have some expensive cars over the years- Porsches and currently an old Ferrari. However, as I get older, I’m starting to think of downgrading to a cheaper and fun to drive convertible. Spent over £5000 on the last Ferrari service and each tyre costs over £600, this has a lot less horsepower but sounds like it’s a good option for a weekend fun car at a fraction of the running costs. What do you think?
Chances are on most UK roads the Mazda is just as fun, if not more so. You can wring its neck out and explore all the performance. If you've scratched the supercar itch and fancy something different, then I don't see why not :)

I had a Mitsubishi GTO, Japanese import of the 3000GT, the non turbo version. Sadly I have to say it was massively disappointing, despite all it's positives 4 wheel steering etc, it was a terrifying nightmare on every corner should the slightest hint of water rest upon the road, bloody terrifying understeer. I remember one winter during a particularly snowy period in Newcastle I had a policeman running in front of my car clearing the traffic as the moment I had pulled onto this snow road which was only a gentle hill my car could not stop, so It jerked down the hill with my foot flat on the brake. No matter what tires I put on it I never managed to solve those problems. Just saying because I saw your eye's pop out when you saw one, don't expect it to be as good as you think it is, it will break your heart buddy. For me it really was a case of disappointment in driving my hero car. It is the car I've regretted owning the most in my life..... but on a war summer day, holy shit can they move well but sadly again you're constantly aware that it's a really big, wide car so a tight country road can leave you with brown trousers every time you meet oncoming traffic.
Haha wow, what a shame. I wouldn't expect too much from one, with it being an old car, and I know they are heavy. But that sounds like an awful experience..... but they look soooo good. I'll probably continue to admire them from afar :)
@@JJonCars You should definitely have a go of one should you get the chance, but owning one and living with it is another. It was expensive to maintain too and heavy on fuel etc.
On dry days however, the faster you go the better it seems to corner, the aero and 4 wheels steering is surprising as hell. I think it's best to say if it's your only car to avoid it but in a multi car home, go for it if you can afford to maintain and run it.
The 2.0 is still underpowered and not quick enough for some people, I can imagine what the 1.5 can do. Don't get me wrong. I own and drive a 2019 ND2 RF with the 2.0 engine, 181 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque and it's quick enough. But if it had at least 30-40 more power and torque, I'd probably be on cloud nine!
I suppose it depends what you're doing with the car :) On a track, yes more power would be nice. But on little country lanes and smaller roads? 1.5 is enough for me at least :)

Where I live the softop comes with a manual transmission only and the rf only with an automatic, which one would you get? Also softop with cloth seats only and rf only with leather seats
I think I'd go for the manual soft-top with cloth seats in that case, as it's closest to the 'pure' MX-5 experience. The RF with the leather would presumably make a better daily driver if doing distance or a commute though.
@@JJonCars I did go with the rf since it’s my daily driver and only car, I am gonna miss for sure the manual transmission! I had a 2019 Suzuki swift boosterjet and was similar to an mx5, very low weight (even less than mx5) with good turbo engine, the most fun I’ve had while driving in the city streets. I guess I’ll get a softop manual when they update the line for the Miata! Sucks that we don’t get the manual transmission for the rf nor any sort of trims at all!
@@andreasnutritionist7293 Where do you live? I think the automatic RF is still a great car, and you can have fun while knowing the car is a little more secure and presumably quieter on the move. So don't be too disappointed!
@@JJonCars i live in mexico 🇲🇽 there are no trims for the car here, you can literally just buy softop manual or rf automatic, no trims, no specs, just one or the other with no way to customize it! but yes! I’ll be getting my hands on the rf GT polymetal gray this upcoming week! Hoping it will still be good experience!

I have a 2018 GT model, with the 1.8 and 6-speed manual. I bought it used 2 years ago, and I love it! I love the red, but mine is unique- black with a dark cherry top. It’s my daily driver, and it does quite well throughout South Florida. The roof remains down year round. Yes, it’s noisy on the highway, but my son has a 4-door Mazda3 when we need to drive any distance. I hope Mazda keeps building it, and I’d love to see some competitors one day.

@@danielthomas8507 Sorry, 2.0. I use to have a ‘99. I believe that was a 1.8. My current one also has a 4-tip Remus exhaust, which sounds much better than the original, without being obnoxious.
