I bought a 2004 mx5 garage queen 50,000 KLM last year and joined a Mazda MX5 club…every member of the club were in their 70s and 80s…great because I am 79 years old.
Fell in love with the styling of this generation of Mx-5 about 4 years ago and after a few years of saving I'm a proud owner myself at 22! Had it for a few months now and I'm loving every moment of it. Can't have a bad day when you drive this to and from work ;)
I’m 59 and have always wanted a MX-5 since they came out in ‘89 but everyone was calling them a bathtub so I didn’t consider buying one, until now. Just wish they had more interesting colors. The only colors I want one in are either the red or the blue. I might go for the pearl white if it looks anything like the pearl white they had on the Honda Prelude back in the 80s.
You’re spot on about needing to actually DRIVE one to understand it. If you care about cars AT ALL you MUST take one for a drive. You will remember the way it feels in everything you drive thereafter.
Have owned three of these down through the years. Wonderful fun! Nothing ever went wrong. Unfortunately, had to sell because my back, wrecked 53 years ago in Vietnam, made getting in and out of it a pain.
As Tim Minchin said, "We have a tendency to define ourselves in opposition to stuff. As a comedian I make my living out of it. But try to also express your passion for things you love . . . Be pro stuff not just anti stuff." In times of all-consuming negativity it's so refreshing to watch a video about being a fan of something. Really enjoyed the vid 👍🏼
Great video. Your enthusiasm for this legend of a car is truly infectious. One of my dream drives this little Mazda. Thanks for your work guys. You rock.
I drove my first Miata in 2022. It was new and it was mine. This is how it happened. My wife bought a Mazda CX-5. When I dropped her off at the dealership, I passed by the new MX-5 they had on the showroom floor. I had never seen one or at least noticed one before. I briefly sat in it, then went on my way. Back home, my 60's MGB-GT was due for a new engine. Given the choice between replacing the MG's engine or a brand-new car with a similar driveline, I chose the latter. I went back to the dealer and bought the same MX-5 that I previously sat in. My first impressions: It's not slow! How could anyone say a car that can traverse the quarter mile in the mid fourteens is slow? It carves through the corners on mountain roads. It stops fast. It feels light... and its tight inside. The ND's sound and navigation systems are good. The gearbox is crisp and direct, as is all the other driver inputs. One last thing... it gets gas mileage that's comparable to a motorcycle.
It's like sitting in your favourite trainer/sneaker…Realising it has an engine…And then having the best fun of your driving life! 😍🤣 …I have more fun driving to the petrol/gas station in my 25yo NB (let alone any other kind of driving) than anything else I've ever driven.
I traded in a 370z for an ND2 RF. Was worried about losing all that power on tap in the MX5. So glad i made the switch. The mx5 is consistently fun and engaging in all driving conditions. It sips fuel in comparison even revving it out. Wish i got one earlier
@@MrBenHaynes I look forward to it. Just went on a fun drive, through the lagoon road to Oconnel, Mayfield road, stop off for a pie at Oberon and then back home via dog rocks road.
I'm an ex 370 owner and just about to buy an ND. Awesome to hear! I loved my old 370 and the test drive in the ND made me laugh at how fun it was for real
@@TheRealTanSeeker my girlfriend still has one, we went away a few months ago on a trip and I really wanted to take the ND but she wasn't sure we would fit enough luggage. I drove the Z a lot, and other than passing power, I found myself wishing we took the ND instead, especially when we got to some twisty country roads. I told her that the next trip we go on we are taking the mx5. I reckon we would have had enough room in the back for a week away if we were creative with packing.
@@Jake-im2lv thanks for sharing. I had a 370Z and I miss the power but I also know I get the most fun from low-speed chuckability rather than power. Have any of you driven a first gen 86 or BRZ? I have been looking at them but am worried the power will be unsatisfying. Not just the power figure, they are a bit notorious for having an dead spot in their torque-curve too. I've always been curious about the ND as well, although they are quite rare & overpriced in my area, its unlikely I'll buy one, at least not this time around
I will say I just picked up a 2016 MX five club. Never did I expect to enjoy driving a car like I enjoy this one. I’ve owned Porsche and Corvette, which are both amazing vehicles. Everything they say about this car is true it is so dang fun to drive, I love it
the thing I love about this channel is they put reliability and maintenance on top of the proority while reviewing cars. Unlike many other channels that focus on ridiculous stuff no one will realistically consider while looking for a car to buy such as cup holders, storage pockets, useless infotainment customization,...
After 23 years of owning MX-5's (20 years in an NA and three years in our ND2), I have to say that your commentary was spot on. We had a BMW Z4 for six years between our two MX-5, and I have to say that the ND2 combines the fun and tossability of the NA with the power and creature comforts of the Z4. Rather the best of two worlds.
This is my "real world" dream car. I particularly like the RF. If anyone would like to swap one for a wife, I'm keen to negotiate. She's a '70 model that hasn't done much hard work. Still in good condition for the age but has a discernible whine which I haven't been able to diagnose or repair but it's been like this since new, so shouldn't be a problem. Starts up easily, and will go all day long. Runs on premium or E 100. Slight problem with her shifting gears unexpectedly, but I'm sure that this is a software issue that could be easily resolved with medication. Cannot engage reverse, but I believe that this is a common problem with this model. Changes direction with virtually no input at all. Handbrake functions perfectly. Thermostat needs replacing as she runs hot and cold. Ideal for an enthusiast or masochist.
I've had an almost unhealthy obsession with retractable hardtops since I was longing for a 1957 Ford Skyliner in high school, and every convertible I've owned has been of this type... that being said, I love the ease and simplicity of the roof in this iteration of the Miata. It's like pulling a blanket over you when it gets too cold.
The manual top is honestly one of the best features in my opinion. For such an important part of the car you've never got to worry about it breaking or not working which in my experience usually happens when you most need it (rainstorm)
@@jah2580 Parts for the top on my Pontiac G6 convertible went out of production years ago so not only would it be expensive to fix, it may not be repairable at all.
@@eugenewang4650 My SLK had a retractable hardtop and it still leaked over the passenger seat every time it rained. I had to keep a towel in the car at all times.
Picked up a manual 2019 RF Club, Brembo, BBS Recaro package. Great fun. With 181 hp it's quick enough. M-Miata I-is A-always T-the A-answer. Very true. The beauty of the MX-5 is you can still have a lot of fun driving at legal speeds whereas most other sports cars you need to be driving well in excess of the speed limit to have any fun.
Test drive the ND once and like Adam said. So much fun to drive in any kind of speed. 100% driving pleasure that this little machine can provide. Well done Mazda.
The Miata is like Goldilocks' bed. It's not too much, it's not too little, it's just right. A beginner can drive it, an intermediate can drive it, and an absolute beast of a driver can drive it. All while having fun. Sometimes horsepower and speed ISN'T the answer. Sometimes it's the quick curves in the mountains that put someone into their calm but achieving "Zen" mode that matters. THAT is the Miata. The Miata lets you get in your personal mental "zone" and stay there, no matter your level of driving skill.
From a prospective of a glider pilot (being flown over 7 hrs and over 1000 km in a tiny cabin), mx-5 ND is spacious and luxuriously comfortable. Driving long distances in the Miata is not a problem but a pleasure, tranquillising, simply puts a smile on one's face. A happy owner of an ND.
Bought one of these a few weeks ago (UK), and it’s the best car decision I ever made. I can second the points about making it fun to go the shops! I made the same point to skeptical coworkers- you don’t have to be going super fast to have a blast in this. Brilliant at any speed. Just gets even better when you boot it - and it’s always begging for more. Superb.
I'm on my 3rd MX5, all bought new and all an absolute hoot! The last one (an NC with the electric hard roof) I had for 14 years and NOTHING went wrong with it. In 2021 I PXed that for a new ND2 and that is an even better car than the NC! The NC was so good I just don't know how Mazda managed to make the ND even better, but they did.
The more time goes by the more the Mazda MX-5 stands out and it seems it's also one of the last driver's cars around. Had a ND before our son was born and miss it oftentimes. Economical, very fun to drive at reasonable speeds, great looks, great quality, reasonably cost to run it.
2009 test drove an NC2 and was instantly addicted. Bought “Marilyn” a True Red Touring edition brand new and now 14 years and 130,000kms of trouble free excitement I am still in love ❤❤
Where I'm different from most drivers, I would take a hard top--and seldom if ever drive it with the top down. Conversation--what conversation with the top down? Music? What music with the top down? Wonderful spring scent in the air?--but most of the time you will be breathing in exhaust from autos and commercial rigs. Security? What security with any soft top--they cut there way in. On and on, and on and on, I'll take a hard top every time.
I own the 2015 1.5L Gt, best thing I ever did was buy this thing. The rev happy 7.8k redline is what sold it. I've driven the 2L and preferred the 1.5L. new models have a higher red line in the 2L, but, I picked up mine for $24k AUD with 87,000kms on it.
Great video, and yes i love my mx5 nc2, take it out every chance i get because as you said, it just makes life better. John, in the UK. Thanks for sharing.
Bought my 2021 100th anniversary RF, and it was the best therapy for me. There are a few things though - definitely get a new exhaust. I got an exhaust and replacement springs from good-win racing, as well as a good set of summer tires, and the car is twice as good from the factory. There are always those that will turn up their noses to the miata, but give that person the opportunity to drive one, and everyone loves it.
I’m from the UK and have a late ‘19 machine grey 1.5 version. It’s just the best, you can thrash it round the bends and have fun, or can use as a daily driver and get superb fuel-economy. Great review by the way!
@@khelgarironfist3301 I haven’t noticed that to be honest, but it does feel like my lights are aiming up compared to other cars, but I don’t think they’re dazzling anyone as never get flashed.
I’m picking mine up on Monday. I was able to borrow one for a day from Mazda and was hooked. Thank you Mazda. This review describes it perfectly as ‘real life fun’ which it is. I honesty have not been so excited. I’ve rented out Jaguar F types and 911 and could only push them if I was willing to lose my driving licence.
Nobody can drive any of the fast cars properly on the street. This is why cars like this and the gr86 are so good. You can go fast around corners and technical roads that bigger heavier cars can't.
We had an NB for a while and we loved it. Should have kept it but, well stuff happens. It was so fun to drive. They really are as good as the stories say.
@baalaagaa Oh, I'm well aware of that. But it's about the fun factor, not the fastest car. The 50 / 50 weight distribution. Beautiful manual transmission. And they are cheap ( kinda )
I've never driven an ND (would absolutely love to!) but I did own a 1989 1.6L original mx-5 maybe 10+ years ago, and it was without question one of the most cherished cars I've owned. By the time I sold the car it was a bit over 20 years old and had just over 170,000km on the clock, so there were a few issues that had come up. The paint was faded on some of the plastic parts (bumpers, mirrors, etc), the zipper on the rear window (plastic on the NA6 model) was starting to get sticky, the plastic window itself was starting to get fuzzy and hard to see through. These are all ultimately pretty small things, but I was a uni student at the time working 2-3 days a week, so even a $600 or $700 repair would have been a struggle for me to save money for. I really loved that car though for so many reasons. Firstly, life is just very different when you're driving roofless. You hear everything, smell everything - you reallly feel so much more connected to the world around you - vs most cars where while driving you just feel like you're in yoru own little bubble. Secondly, even if the car wasn't quick, it was so much fun. You the fact that you could floor it and rev it out to redline every time wihtout actually going over the speed limit was a hoot, and you could put your foot down around corners and let the rear end come out a little without any real threat of the car spinning or losing contol - communciation through the car was amazing so you immediately felt when it was breaking traction and could make an adjustment isntantly. And it was just so controllable at the limit. The steeering was great , the gearshift was great, because of the light weight the braking was great. Thirdly, maintence. Minimal electrical systems so there wasnt all that much that could go wrong. Brakes were small so they were cheap to replace. Tyres were modest sized so they were cheap to replace. It never used more then about 8L/100km no matter how hard I drove it. Ever since I sold the car 10+ years ago I've never stopped toying with the idea of buying another one, I really did love it that much. The only other car that left as much of an impression on my was my Alfa 147 GTA. I've put on some weight now so fitting inside an mx5 isnt as easy as it once was...but as a pure weekend i may still consider an ND. Honestly I think I would even be fine with a 1.5L model, becuase with these cars its never been about speed, and even that little rev happy 1.5 is still singificantly quicker then my NA6 model was (and that was quick enough be fun).
Lost my 2016 Club to a hit and run. It had 170,000 Miles. Never burned oil, no squeaks or rattles, only had to replace brakes once. Had to get new tires every season (because Miata plus hooligan). I did have to replace the tranny at 140,000. 6 speed and LSD is best, just get one. I'm getting another, soon.
I had a 2020 MX-5 Club as a fun weekend car for two years. Really loved it, but I decided to sell it to get a new experience. Bought a 2022 Camaro 2SS 1LE, which is also a great car. So glad I got to have a V8 (with a manual) before they disappear, but as mentioned in this video, I find the car way more capable than I can use most of the time. Where I live, there are mostly tight back roads where I don't get a chance to let the Camaro stretch her legs. The MX-5, by comparison, was something I could really enjoy at any speed, and was a lot better suited to the back roads around where I live. I'm seriously considering putting in trading out of the Camaro next spring (car will be put away in the winter so only a few more months of driving) and getting back into another MX-5 just because it was more fun, more of the time.
Love my daily 2016 Club soft top daily driving in 4 season North America. Same color Artic White & it shows the body lines very well. Brillant engineering in this car. The soft top takes a little more care but its worth it.
I'm on my 5th MX-5. I started with the 2016, then the '17, then they came out with the updated engine, so I bought a 2019, then a 2023. I've put at least 80k miles on each, except the '23, the 4th MX-5, it was totaled in a collision. I've since bought another '23, same Platinum w/Terracotta Napa Leather seats. Presently, I've got about 3,200 miles on it. Not a moment's trouble out of the 4 previous MX-5's. I use Mobil One synthetic oil, and have it changed every 6K miles and the transmission oil changed at 60K miles. I am not a practical man, never was. I started sportscar life back in 1964 with a new MGB, then another new 1966 MGB. Fun is driving through the Appalachian Mountains, but don't try it in the winter. By the way; Good review.
I bought a 2013 Renault Magane Trophy + (terrible name) new and LOVED how much fun it was, but had to sell it 2 years ago after a 11 years love affair with it to get into the housing market... I'm not one to revisit previous loves, so was struggling with where to go next... I think I've found it... hopefully soon I could see my way to a MX-5 - You are saying all the right things...
I have a nc prht 230.000 ks still going strong I brought it to keep for 1 year for a bit of fun that was in 2017 still have it great daily for a single person
Love the ND 1.5L. So engaging. The infotainment screen can get slight spiderweb cracks internally from top left corner. I think it is due to cold weather. I have seen quite a few examples like this.
I see more and more of these in our car club - older guys trading in their clubmans for the weekly drive up mount glorious. They keep up through the twisties, and arrive for coffee at the same time as the smaller clubmans and lotus elises. The owners all love them. Real world performance with comfort and practicality thrown in.
Alright, last comment on the MX5. It’s a truly special car, but I couldn’t live with it. The closest thing I’ve come to a practical and comfortable version of it is the BMW 130i. Road tests and performance figures can’t explain the small nuances of these cars. It’s a shame the 125i and 130i were overshadowed by the 135i by all the pointless 0-100 times and reviews etc. the 125i and moreso 130i were fantastic purists cars that have a lot in common with the little Mazda. They’re revvier, in the case of the 130i have shorter gearing and fun factor cranked up. But because there’s always the ‘faster’ version these get forgotten. Much like the 1.5 in the MX5. That was designed to be the purist version. It had an engine that way far more designed and tuned for the MX5 and quite a bit less weight. Actually that was the key to being less heavy than than NC, the 2.0 being actually pretty close to the NC which was also 2lt. The original ND 2.0 was a bit lazy and not the most exciting engine. The 1.5 was revvy and fizzy and for the spirit of the car is actually the better choice. The 2.0 was much improved in the later update, but the 1.5 is almost completely forgotten about OR thought of as just the cheap entry point for people who want an MX5 but don’t really care about performance. The 130i is an absolute hoot for someone who wants an MX5-like car but needs something more practical. Sure a Golf with a DSG is probably going to be faster, but the unquantifiable aspect that makes these things amazing simply can’t be conveyed on paper or a video.
Spot on, but you do need to do some mods to the 130i to make it handle like it should but you are right, 0-100km times don't mean much, straight line speed/acceleration gets boring quickly and, unless you're a pro driver you won't have the skills or gonads to exploit a high powered car on the road or track for that matter, corners are where the fun is at and being able to exploit the cars potential without having to always be in a HPDE or needing the computers/nannies to compensate for your lack of skill..
Video couldnt have come at a better time. I've been obsessed with the new GR86/BRZ but am planning on cross shopping the MX5 this weekend. We'll see how it fairs up in comparison! Cheers
@@alex-sc7zl nah, don’t ruin its excellent balance for street. That said I have a clubman type car now with coil overs and that’s surprisingly compliant. But the body roll is part of the character.
Plenty of mx5's are 2nd cars, so very low kilometer ones are not uncommon on the 2nd hand market=bargin, my 2002 Toyota MR2 spyder has 132,000kms and is a gem.
Great video. I live in the uk and I bought a NC kendo model (retractable hard top) in 2011. Brand new. It’s done 40k miles and touch wood never missed a beat. Hardly cost me a penny. Bad things. It could be faster and after a long journey it’s not the most comfortable. But it’s a lovely looking car. The ND is nicer. And it’s just great fun to drive. Totally different car with the top down. At some point I will be in the market for a new (to me) car and a 12 month old ND will be on the shortlist.
An MX5 has been at the top of my list for many, many years. But at 6’7, I’m just not gonna fit. But I still want one. Oh and the noises you made changing gears. Yeah.
I have a 2022 GT similar to the model tested and it is a joyful car. As they say a quick car, not necessarily a fast car. It is so much fun, and practical enough for road trips with small bags or soft luggage. Interestingly the car in the video has black badging as opposed to the standard chrome badges...also a non-standard aerial -great review!
for the streets my friend oh and i guess the cars made for the street too its super nice drove the 2023 GT variant the owner of the local dealership is selling it for 30 grand might get it it is definently as nice as it sounds and looks and feels even better in person
Hahahaha 3:45 My take on this is absolutely the same. To drive a convertible is one of the greatest experiences for me and my cheeks hurt from smiling but it has to be convertible by heart not by cutting the roof of a normal car.
Another known problem with the Mx5 ND, is that when the windscreen is replaced, the clips for the windscreen trim panels break, which if not fixed correctly, means that whilst driving the panels around the windscreen can fly off… so definitely something to look out for when you’re getting a windscreen replaced (speaking from experience)
If you notice my icon, yes that is an MGF. I compete in track days and hillclimbs. What do I have to beat at these meetings? A bloody MX5 or a Lotus Elise. One of the drivers of an MX5 let me drive his at Mt Cotton HIllclimb. When I got the car back to the pits (I was 2 seconds slower than the MG, but not my car) he asked what I thought of the car. My answer, I got the wrong car I should have got one of these. Great video, but now a lot of people now know what a great car they are. They are easy to drive and you can get in them and drive quickly immediately. No bad handling, very neutral with a bit of understeer. The MGF and MGTF with its mid-engine is a harder car to learn to drive quickly. They have a switch that says oversteer on or off. That switch is always on.
I have an mgf as well that I'll be selling eventually. The hydragas was shot in mine and I put on the satur coilover kit. Its still way too rough on the roads where I live even with adjustments made to try and make it softer. I do think the F sounds a lot better though with the intake and exhaust on it. I also had to do a head gasket in the first 3 months of ownership on the F lol
@@Jake-im2lv I understand about the rough ride as I had race suspension setup. The F was still a daily and I recently sold mine with (wait for it) 213,000klms on the clock to work on my faster 2002 MGTF 160. The MGF was so harsh you could pick when you went over road paint. I have had to soften the MGTF to get it to handle. That K series engine really does sound good though with a Mk7 exhaust and the inlet down by the air intake on the side of the car. I really should have bought an Elise.
@@murrieteacher yeah that's where I routed my cold air intake as well. Even cats eye reflectors on the road feel rough to go over lol. I should have got a TF with soft ride kit but didn't realise it would be that bad in the F lol. Being so light probably doesn't help with that
Yeah, I didn’t get one because of some earth moving performance numbers. I got one for my daily mundane driving needs. Turns the ordinary drive into outrageous fun! No danger of losing my license either. Love it!
Now on the performance front. These are quite a bit quicker than an 86 (1st Gen). They’re not much slower than a Golf GTI, couple of tenths in actual tests. Not only that, it is way better, more tractable performance. Launch a GTI and you get dud-dud-dud-dud with the terrible traction control. These things you can launch perfectly every time. Between the light weight and the factory LSD they just rocket away. They are PLENTY quick and WAY more rewarding. They also sacrifice stupid and pointless 0-100 figures by having close, short gearing. Which is way more beneficial in the real world and you can take better advantage of the relatively low power it has. Around bends etc the MX5 leaves a Golf for dead. It’s not even a comparison. It’s like comparing a Windows 7 gaming computer to an iPhone.
I just installed an avo turbo and the high compression ratio makes the boost come on almost mediately, makes it feel more like a supercharger in that regard.
I can only agree with virtually all of your points. I own a 2016 Recaro Sport - which I have owned since Aug 2018 - since then it's been my only car, used daily for commute, fun, holidays etc etc and I am not changing it any time soon. They are brilliant cars, not the fastest but FUN FUN FUN even on the daily commute to work,it's the only car I've ever takemn for a drive 'just because'. In the 5 years I've had the car I've had No reliablity issues/breakdowns, and the only real slighgt annoyances are the bloodhy cup holders, they are rubbish, and the infotainment can be quite slow to boot up. Apart from that a great little car that is pratical enough - for me- to use daily. Oh and roof down, I'm in the UK and even in winter the roof is down if it's over 6 degrees C and not raining :-). BUY ONE you won't regret it.
How's the soft top on the British weather? No issues with the rain? I'm looking for one but I don't know if I'll be able to get a garage spot before getting the car

Owned a NC MX5 for a long time, and now own a ND MX5. Great cars to own. Make sure you get as manual though. If you can’t drive manual, go and get driving lessons so you can. You won’t regret it
I strictly drive manual but can’t drive an MX5 manual any more. Contemplated an auto (and have driven the Abarth in auto), but it just doesn’t seem right to have an auto one.
@@murraysampson2501 sure. The auto isn’t going to be as good as the manual. But is an auto MX5 still going to be better than pretty much every other car, especially at the price point?
Being an ex cop of 21 years with PTSD, anxiety and depression. I bought a NC2 mx5 12 months ago. This car and I'm sure all manual mx5 will be a non medicated aid for anyone suffering with depression. And if you can, like I did with mine, speak to the guys at mx5 mania in Dural, Get a full exhaust, mild cam, k&n air filter, ECU tune and coil overs. You'll end up with a 152kw @ the motor, unbelievably addictive driving car that sounds like an old school race car. If Mazda did all that from factory, it would be the best affordable sports convertible car in history. Well done Mazda. Love my NC2 folding hardtop mx5. Never going to sell it.
I had an ND for a few years. It was amazing, the best car I've ever driven and owned. Amazing gearbox clutch combo. So much fun. I sold it mainly because of how tight the interior is and I was finding it uncomfortable. The drivers seat in this video has worn, as did mine. I found the seats quite unsupportive, they were probably the worst aspect of the car for me.
Had the same. Had an RF and absolutely LOVED driving it. But at 6’2” I had no room for my knees or even just being able to adjust the position of my feet during a half hour drive. With arthritis I just couldn’t drive it any more.

You’re spot on about needing to actually DRIVE one to understand it. If you care about cars AT ALL you MUST take one for a drive. You will remember the way it feels in everything you drive thereafter.
He didn't even bring up smoking. That's how happy the Miata made him. 😁
It doesn't have a lighter 🙃
Have owned three of these down through the years. Wonderful fun! Nothing ever went wrong. Unfortunately, had to sell because my back, wrecked 53 years ago in Vietnam, made getting in and out of it a pain.
As Tim Minchin said, "We have a tendency to define ourselves in opposition to stuff. As a comedian I make my living out of it. But try to also express your passion for things you love . . . Be pro stuff not just anti stuff."
In times of all-consuming negativity it's so refreshing to watch a video about being a fan of something. Really enjoyed the vid 👍🏼
The other wonderful thing about the MX5: it is FAR more rewarding to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slowly. Nailed it.
My first impressions:
It's not slow!
Welcome to the club Mr Shirley.
Can't wait to go for a spin with you when I wrangle my ND from my son's grasp in the Uni semester break!
Everything they say about this car is true it is so dang fun to drive, I love it
Bought my mx5 a year ago and it puts a smile on my face EVERY time I drive it. Why o why didn't I buy before!
the thing I love about this channel is they put reliability and maintenance on top of the proority while reviewing cars. Unlike many other channels that focus on ridiculous stuff no one will realistically consider while looking for a car to buy such as cup holders, storage pockets, useless infotainment customization,...
The most fun car to drive I have ever owned. And 75 and I’ve had a few cars.
Auto or manual?
Of all the videos on mx5 I've seen this is the one which I watch entirely with interest. As a result it makes me desire for one. Thanks.
Does she come with a warranty?
My concern is size, just how big is she? I've only so much room In the garage!
How long between services? Yearly?
@@davidsargent8780 Guarantied to work as advertised or I get all my money back.
@@jolkraeremeark6949 Not to big, but I'd recommend keeping her somewhere other than the garage, if you spend much time in it.
😊
The manual top is honestly one of the best features in my opinion. For such an important part of the car you've never got to worry about it breaking or not working which in my experience usually happens when you most need it (rainstorm)
@@jah2580 Parts for the top on my Pontiac G6 convertible went out of production years ago so not only would it be expensive to fix, it may not be repairable at all.
Being a manual mechanism itll never break. Soft tops may degrade with age and start leaking (will take like 20 years though)
@@eugenewang4650 My SLK had a retractable hardtop and it still leaked over the passenger seat every time it rained. I had to keep a towel in the car at all times.

Superb.
Still trying to wear out my 1999 NB manual, it just keeps on giving! I'd love a current model but fear it'll just outlast me.
100% spot on! I bought a 2020 GT RF a month ago. It’s simply the most fun you can have on the road for the money.

Does the headlights of other cars annoy you more because you sit lower?
Speak for yourself champ.. have fun with your slow AF pansy cars.
Well said
Yep. These are plenty fast anyway.
Liked it so much I bought a new 2024 last week!! ❤
We had an NB for a while and we loved it. Should have kept it but, well stuff happens. It was so fun to drive. They really are as good as the stories say.
Get yerself an ND then!
If i had to choose a roadster on a budget it would no doubt be the miata ! it could be a fun weekend toy
Every MX-5 review video has the reviewer smiling for a reason
I've driven an rx8 but not a mx5. I really want a mx5. It would be my weekend and track day car.
Unless you like constantly pulling off the racing line to let others pass the mx5 is a terrible track car.
Honestly I think I would even be fine with a 1.5L model, becuase with these cars its never been about speed, and even that little rev happy 1.5 is still singificantly quicker then my NA6 model was (and that was quick enough be fun).
the previous generation MX-5s also had very easy to operate tops, but the ND really takes it to a new level.
I been waiting for this video! I owned ND MIata and its the best reliable low weight sport car thats also an everyday driver!
Whatever car im currently interested in you guys ALWAYS seem to have a great video on them! Keep up the stellar work guys!!
Terrific review. Really nailed the essence of the MX-5.
Very nice review; well done!
Love my daily 2016 Club soft top daily driving in 4 season North America. Same color Artic White & it shows the body lines very well. Brillant engineering in this car. The soft top takes a little more care but its worth it.
Came across this channel a few days ago. Absolute gem.
Great 👍 Anything that makes the world a better place gets my vote cheers 🍻
I got mine today. I’m in love.

I love these things so much. Drove an auto one at my last job, and at 6"2', i can fit in it. Maybe it should be my next car 🤔
I have a nc prht 230.000 ks still going strong I brought it to keep for 1 year for a bit of fun that was in 2017 still have it great daily for a single person

Loved the enthusiasm with which you made this video!
I love my 2021 RF Mazda, Miata, jet black automatic fun car
Love the ND 1.5L. So engaging. The infotainment screen can get slight spiderweb cracks internally from top left corner. I think it is due to cold weather. I have seen quite a few examples like this.
I see more and more of these in our car club - older guys trading in their clubmans for the weekly drive up mount glorious. They keep up through the twisties, and arrive for coffee at the same time as the smaller clubmans and lotus elises. The owners all love them. Real world performance with comfort and practicality thrown in.
I've owned a 2010 NC MX-5 for the last 6urs and am shopping for an NA MX-5 currently... tempted to add an ND to collection also.
Good show Gents! I am a CX-5 owner and would like an mx5 as a toy but here in SA they are rather pricey and we didn't get any beyond 2017 I think
Love my NC, looking to upgrade to a newer model. Your vid was very helpful when it comes to looking for the year and model i should look for, Thanks
Cheers
I’m sure the new one is very good. But I cross shopped the previous 86 and it wasn’t even close. Bit more practical the 86, but everything else…
I test drove both. 86 has more space in it and feels better steering wise, mx-5 is better in every other way. Guess which one I bought ;)
@@alex-sc7zl I’m not surprised at all. Despite all the bluster of the first one the two were miles apart.

Yeah.
They are amazing to drive. But yeah, not for taller folk.
You could drive it on dry days with the roof down!

Owner a MX5 GT RF for one year. It is great to have it as a second or third car. I will need to keep my CX5 to carry some big stuff still. 😂
Why windows 7 though? Windows 10 is pretty standard nowadays no?
@@recursion. I’m not sure you understood the comparison… then again 8 months later I’m not sure I do either.
I just installed an avo turbo and the high compression ratio makes the boost come on almost mediately, makes it feel more like a supercharger in that regard.
I love the MX5. I'll have one one day for sure.
I swear you done this car before. But another good review Adam. Good stuff.
Great review. Entertaining and genuine enthusiasm.
Great review mate.
Please if possible do a review on a Kia optima and a cheat sheet if also possible. I have one and am in Sydney if necessary. Thank you for you videos and thorough explanations, always enjoy watching your videos
Thanks, we have a 2016 auto, the boss insisted on auto…..I only drive in manual mode which although not quite as good as a manual transmission, it is still great fun!
Owned a NC MX5 for a long time, and now own a ND MX5. Great cars to own. Make sure you get as manual though. If you can’t drive manual, go and get driving lessons so you can. You won’t regret it
I strictly drive manual but can’t drive an MX5 manual any more. Contemplated an auto (and have driven the Abarth in auto), but it just doesn’t seem right to have an auto one.
get automatic if u tall and have no room for clutch pedal
I test drove an auto and manual, bought the manual. The auto was nowhere near as engaging to drive.
@@murraysampson2501 sure. The auto isn’t going to be as good as the manual. But is an auto MX5 still going to be better than pretty much every other car, especially at the price point?
If you enjoy driving the auto, I say go for it. But for those new to the MX-5, if you can drive a manual, at least try one.
@@mattdebyl8806so, at 5'8", I wonder if I'll find it much better?
