Since 2001 I have had 9 mx5s (4 NB2.5s, 1 NC3 and 4 NC 3.5s. I sold number 8 because I was finding it too difficult too get in and out of. Six months later I bought number 9 because I so missed driving something that felt, and feels, like an extension of my body. They are special cars - and in more than 250000 miles the only thing that has ever gone wrong with any of mine was an electric window. So just hang onto yours.
Woooooow!!! That's absolutely mad!! 9!!! Hahaha! That's amazing! I've sadly JUST sold this (as I need the cash for my freelance video career at the moment, nothing to do with the car itself really) but my intention is to earn more from the short term investment and come back to a BBR spec NC in the future! Come back with a bang, buy one in a more vibrant colour when I'll have even more appreciation of missing it!
@@richardcoates4471 yes, agreed. I’ve had 2xNA and an NB2.5 and looked at an ND but couldn’t get on with the interior at all. It’s just too tightly packaged. And in RHD, the sensation of having to reach up and over the handbrake to change gear felt weird. Never “felt” like that in my old 5s.
@@smithp573 Same here! I've had a 1.6 NA for about two years, and I just bought a 1.8 RHD NA, and a 1.8VVT RHD NBfl. The VVT engine will probably end up in the 1.6 NA, and the 1.8 NA I plan to restore it and keep it OE... I don't see myself driving anything else in the future (if I do, I'll still keep at least one miata!)
When my daughter was shopping for a car, I saw a beautiful, shiny, little red convertible MX-5 in the middle of the showroom. I told my daughter if it is a manual, I’m getting it. It was a 2016, with only 20k on it. It was truly an impulse buy. Best car ever! I love it! 🚗
The most fun car ever! I have professionally repaired cars for almost 50 years. I have driven all kinds of cars. I have never not smiled while driving any Mazda MX-5. They are all great cars.
Owned my MX5 NC MK3 for 2 years now, made so many quality improvements such as BC coilovers, GCFABRICATIONS roll bar, rota grid wheels, Scorpion exhaust system, alcantara bucket seat, TRS harness, alcantara steering wheel, carbon fibre track door cards, Mtech brakes, yellow stuff pads, Dave fab engine bits, Cybul strut braces, precision customs gear and handbrake knobs, genuine leather gaiters, under seal protection and an Avery Dennison wrap. It’s in storage during the winter months and I love tinkering about with it over the winter. I use it as fun summer car, driving to the coast for the weekend and attending many car shows. It’s a great way to meet other car enthusiasts and I would never sell it. I’ve spent a lot of money on making the car exactly the way I want it.
That sounds like the absolute dream machine MX-5! I bet it feels like a car worth £40k with all those interior upgrades too! Like a Lotus that's easier to live with!
Owned a nc-1 for four years, agree with everything you commented on. My main complaint is the lack of support in the seats. The thing I love about it is, it makes me feel like I am getting away with something when driving. Enjoy!!
The Mk 4 has a boot switch , anyway , if you're dim enough to leave your keys in the boot, you deserve trouble. I've had two Mk 3s and two Mk 4 s , both from new . The only car for me , and at 85 years , top down all year round , and my only ccar , there is nothing to beat it .
We bought a 2001 in 2014 with 50,000 miles on it. It’s a summer only car, so in my climate it sleeps 6-7 months. It now has 69,000 miles. The past 3 years we have taken it on “adventure.” We drive out 500 miles or so and then drive around towards home (ish). Top down. No interstates. No reservations. It’s always a great trip. Mountain roads are fun to carve. Scenic cruises are lovely. Getting towards the end of our 10th Miata season. I don’t think we’ll ever give up this car until we can’t get down in it.
I miss my 2013 PRHT Club. I had two 1995 NA. Yes the NA are lighter, but people tend to over look that the NC has 2 extra airbags, more interior space, and a much more safe and rigid chassis. So it's not that the extra weight was for nothing.
I had exactly the same one and absolutely loved it, then kids came along so had to buy a bigger car. I will admit that over the years that I had it as my main car it did eventually start to feel claustrophobic and the older I got, the more annoying the road noise was on long drives. Nevertheless, I'd buy another in a heartbeat if I could afford a second 'weekend' car, and get it tuned by BBR. I currently drive an Audi S3 with 310 BHP, but the MX-5 still holds a very special place in my heart.
There is a button to open the boot right in the center underneath the lip. You do have to have the key in your pocket or close by to be able to pop the boot. I didn’t know about this until I had the car for a few months. But I have had my car since 2015 and love it!
Great video mate. It was actually your initial video of your MK3 that made me decide on a MX5, except I chose a MK2. I've had it for just over 8 months now, and of course I've discovered many drawbacks - but I've found little ways around them. The main one was trying to go camping with a MX5, I was going to sell up and buy myself a Volvo or Saab estate of some description before realising that I could just get a boot bag and add about 50-75ltrs of space to the car for longer trips. My Mrs has been really good at keeping my head on straight, and kinda pushed me to focus on adding bits to the MX5 to make it more my own - and through this I've fallen in love with the car more. I'm proud to own an MX5, and the community behind it is amazing. Some bits you mentioned about a roll bar and coil-overs are a must (I'd say) for all MX5s as it will increase driving experience. Thank you for making these videos, very informative. And thank you for being the reason I even purchased one in the first place, makes me feel good knowing I swapped a crappy Chinese 2019 MG3 for a £3000 MX5.
Hey Larvs, This is my favourite comment I've read in ages! Thank you so much and I'm honoured to have helped you cross the line into MX-5 ownership! That's amazing about your other half supporting the car, mine also has been super supportive and has told me not to sell it many times! It obviously shows how much joy these cars bring to us! And absolutely, the community is superb! If you're ever in the South East area of the UK and fancy seeing the car on the channel, I'd be chuffed to film it - I've not driven an NB before, let alone a nicely sorted one! Huge thanks again for your kind words mate and happy MX-5ing!
Bought my 2012 NC PRHT in 2017 with 19k miles on it. It's a daily driver, and now has 190k miles. Due to the terrible roads in Michigan, it still has stock suspension and alignment settings. Normal maintenance only, and no mechanical issues outside of components that always wear out (shocks, tires, brakes, etc.) It's by far the most reliable and most fun car I've owned.
Holy hell above, you've put some SERIOUS miles on it hahaha! I can see why though, what amazing cars they are!

I´ve had my NC MK3 for one and a half years now and I love it. I enjoy driving it through the windy roads of the mountains in Alicante but also took it to the Alps last September and that was a pure bliss. I also have a Mazda 3 for everyday use but I have no intentions of selling my Miata while I am still able to get in and out of it ;)
Full access to passenger Headlight is easy. Remove the bolts holding the washer tank ( 5 min). Gently move it up and away, The back of the headlight is now completely accessible.
That's useful to know thank you :) - I guess you'd just need a small toolkit in the glovebox or something in case - it was more unlucky that I was on holiday so far from anything useful haha!
Thank you again for this amazing video. I bought my first MX-5, it's an NC 3.5 Kuro edition last December after watching your videos. I fully agree, how much fun it is to drive an MX-5. Thank you again.
Thanks so much, Jay, I really appreciate it! And I'm honoured to have influenced your purchase pal, bloody glad it's not been a disappointment! They're just so, so involved and raw for the money aren't they!
Had experience of one of these (Mk 3.5 with the better ride height) from new (my ex wife's) for many years. The biggest and best modification (as you cover) from new was a suspension set up at Centre Gravity. Took it there 2 weeks out of the dealership and it genuinely transformed the steering. The level of weight and feeling added with nothing more than adjustment was gob smacking. Had small subtle changes to how it handled cambers etc but the improvement to the steering was immense and worth the money alone.
Indeed, getting one with the limited slip differential is recommended (tip: All NCs with the 6-speed manual gearbox come with one). I've owned my NC for about 8 years now, having added about 120k kilometers on it daily driving it. It has been totally reliable for me, and it still puts a smile on my face every time.
You and I actually had the same exact experience! I just bought a 21 club and moved to the countryside with a lot of straight roads, I also commute far for work which was tiring however I also found relief in all the things you mentioned... I now have a second car and my wife bought me a track day ticket. Thanks for sharing your experience. 😊
I have a 2010 Sport Tech NC 3.5, paid 8.5k for it two years ago….. love it. Not long after I took it to BBR to have the Super 200 upgrade with the full GT exhaust. Also over time I’ve added a new Pioneer head unit, wheels refurbished, four new tyres and full under seal to keep rust at bay. Finally I took it to Roddisons last week and had Meister CRD suspension installed. Collected it last Thursday and WOW……. it’s amazing. Fully aligned and corner weighted, feels very direct and analogue. The NC is such a good car, I hope to keep mine for a long time. So far I’ve spent about 15k including the car, should I have bought a Boxster? Down in Cornwall now in the family wagon, a Sharan. Missing the MX. Great video, really enjoyed it.
I’ve always liked the curious cars…. maybe due to finances. I ran a Alfa 164 24V QV for a few years, then an Avantime, yes one of them. Had that car for 3 years, brilliantly stupid. If I had a garage I’d have one again. A Merc SL 129, probably my favourite, as for a few K you’re a spot the ball winner. A couple of E30 325i Sports, various other Alfas, Talbot Sunbeam and XR2s. I wish I could afford a decent 911, but maybe I could run a 968 as a a daily? The NC takes some beating but I regularly drive from Sheffield to the Lakes or Whitby and although I like it, my wife Sally finds it a bit agricultural. Just so anyone reading knows, drive the road from Pickering to Whitby, that runs via Stape and Goathland. So not the Fylingdales road, adjacent almost. I think it’s one of the best bits of road in Yorkshire. In fact it’s better than any of the three Adam and the Ants albums.
Great video thanks. From Rochester,NY test drove one for the first time about a month ago and was so thrilled that I am now the proud owner of a 2007 NC PRHT 6 speed and I can't stop driving it, its fantastic.
I had a Mk3 from new for 14 years - and absolutely nothing went wrong with it. It was superb. I traded it in 2021 for an ND2, the latest MX5. Which is even better! Except the steering - the hydraulic rack on the Mk3 is better than the electric one on the ND - but there's not much in it - the ND is pretty bluddy good in that respect too. And it's 181bhp and lighter than the Mk3 so it handles and goes better! Before the Mk3 I had a 2004 Mk2, also from new, which I traded for the Mk3 in 2007 so I had that just 3 years before the foldy hard top roof and extra room in the Mk 3 persuaded me me to upgrade. Your so called 'design shortcomings' are surely just facts of life with a small sports car. Obviously the boot is small, and obviously you are too tall to comfortably fit it. I suspect even changing a headlight is as awkward for most cars as in the MX5. My wife has a CX-30 for the times we need more than 2 seats and serious luggage space - but that's not what MX5s are about.
Thanks so much, I massively appreciate this. And it's actually super useful to know, I'm still experimenting with what the audience enjoy most. I've just tried my first review that's shot from the driver's seat the entire time (the Boxster review from last night) and I'm thrilled to see that's working wonders too!
Spot on! My 2008 MX-5 has been my daily ride since 1010 and I strongly agree with your observations. I also use my wife’s Honda Civic for occasions when more cargo or passenger capacity is required. While the MX-5 excels on winding country roads, don’t underestimate it in traffic. Its small stature, unrestricted visibility, short breaking distance, and nimble lane changing ability make it an excellent choice for challenging commutes. such as on the Southern California freeways.
I'm in the U.S. and own a 2008 with the PRHT. I've had it five yrs. now and still enjoy it. The value factor along with the fun factor make this a very good sports car to own. Add in reliability and it's a no brainer.
Bought my nc2 a couple of weeks ago and love it. It's a second car so I just use it at the weekends when I feel like it and that feels like the sweet spot. Thanks for the video, watching this a few weeks ago cemented in my mind that I wanted to make the purchase!
Spot on. I've had my 2006 mk3 NC for 3.5 years and have driven many cars over the last 25 years. The mk3 MX5 is easily the best drivers car for the money. You can have huge fun within the speed limit. Nothing else compares. A proper wheel alignment is a must too and keep the tyre pressures at a constant all round - the chassis setup is very precise and the pressures do make a difference.
If your button in the cabin doesn't work for opening the trunk( boot) , check inside the boot as you may have unintentionally disabled the a switch that controls the button under the dash.
Superb to the point video! Watched it twice. I ordered my '13 GT PRHT new. Many, many modifications to it. I installed a Flyin Miata Supercharger myself. I left the tuning to a professional, but the rest I did. I love this little car. It's been a great Roadster over the 10 years as of January 27,2023.
Thanks so much, Vortex! Your simple comment is one of the most uplifting ones! You'll be glad to know I'm coming back much more full swing next year, I'll have much more time on my hands compared to 2022 which has been nothing short of hectic!
I’m a new driver at 39 and I’m seriously considering buying one of these for myself to make up for lost time. You’ve certainly not put me off the idea.
Your first video made me buy a MX5 Mk2 (as first own car). I dont regret the decision, lots of memories attached. I thought of selling it to get a more practical 4 seater. But I think I love the car too much to do it
Don't do it dude. I had a 98 nb modded with all the goodies and sold it for a 6 speed V8 Holden Commodore 5 years ago, and have been itching to get back into one ever since.
Thank you so much pal, I massively appreciate that. April is looking to be a quiet month for me work-wise, so it seems the perfect time to book some car reviews in! I adore putting them together, they're just time consuming when I'm already busy on the road shooting bits for work. I need to step it up and make time, it's such a fun hobby really!
28 year, still love it, is my second car but i drove it more than suppose to be daily car, when i do long distance, i choose B road, make my trip more interesting n enjoy ... current 300k++ still stock engine
I've had my 2012 Sport Black for 3.5 years, and I still love it. I've had similar experiences to you, sometimes falling out of love with it - especially when all the roads seem to have permanent roadworks near me, or traffic is slow, or I start to wonder if something more practical would be useful. But in all, it's just amazing - especially on country lanes, and even in 50mph zones. Even the stereo, is one of the best sounding car stereos I've ever experienced.
@@benbrown1889 Same here! It's a beautiful paint job, and seems to get more attractive with age. Recently I've had loads of people commenting on it when I'm out and about.
Dear PP. I've owned my 2009 NC for 3 years and still love it. Thanks for the video. At the start you mentioned something about locking the keys in the boot. My GT has a hidden button to open it under the dash beside the hood latch. It also has a button above the plate to open it that is part of the keyless entry system as options besides the key.
I absolutely adore mx5s. I had an NB8a. Exhaust, roll cage, deep dish rims, heavy clutch, hardtop as well. It was absolutely phenomenal. I sold it 5 years ago to get V8 5.7l Commodore (also manual). Ive regretted it ever since. So, I'm selling my Commodore now to get back into an MX5. Test drove an NC for the first time in my life yesterday and I literally started giggling as I took off I couldn't believe how fun it felt and I am absolutely enthused with it. Can't wait to get an NC now.
I've had my '06 NC since 2010. Still puts a smile on my face. The only upgrades I've done are an aftermarket stereo head-unit, a behind-the-seat powered subwoofer (won't fit under the seat), and a Moroso aluminum engine coolant reservoir. The original plastic one failed (I later learned that this is a common occurrence), leaving me stranded on the highway. Fortunately I was only a few miles from home.
Really good, informative video, thanks! I have a 2007 NC hardtop in the same Galaxy Grey. Here in Australia, all NCs came with the 2.0 and LSD; basically, your only option was hard or soft top, with or without Bose. My NC isn't that quick, though it isn't the slug that some people seem to think it is. I have an insane stage 3+ tuned Saab 9-5 Aero for when I want power and comfort on a long drive, and new Mitsubishi Triton (L300 to you) 4x4 for work. And it's the MX5 that I always want to be driving.Taking it along the twisty roads through a wine region on one of Perth's 300 or so sunny days a year is one of life's great pleasures, and I can't see myself selling it, unless it's to buy another, newer MX5. My subjective gripes are; gearbox is a little noisy, though that's probably more to do with previous owners and 202000 kms than the car itself. Shite sun visor design; if they'd been made from cardboard they couldn't have been more fragile. At least they're cheap on eBay. Seats are a little lacking in lateral support, and the shiny leather doesn't help either when you're cooking it around country roads. But I genuinely think you can't have so much fun for so little money in anything else. I'll leave the final word to Jeremy Clarkson's review of the NC when it came out. "You waste your money on a Mustang or a Ferrari. The fact is that if you want a sports car, the MX-5 is perfect. Nothing on the road will give you better value. Nothing will give you so much fun. The only reason I'm giving it five stars is because I can't give it 14."
Hi mate, I'm looking to get into an nc1 very soon, also in Australia. Any issues/common maintenance problems that give ya trouble? My NB8a actually left me stranded a few times in traffic due to some common problems (like the CAS sensor shutting itself)
@@anthonyplaysbass Hello mate, they are pretty bulletproof mechanically. The plastic coolant expansion tanks have been known to split and dump coolant, causing overheating and engine damage. And the engines like to drink oil, so it's wise to keep an eye on the dipstick level. Other than that, they are tip top. Like all MX5 the gearboxes can be noisy, but that's more an irritant than anything
@@dielaughing73 my favourite local is the road between Jarrahdale and Byford; perfect for the MX5. Also try the Jarrahdale to SW Highway road via Serpentine dam. But the best roads are all down south, round Margaret River and Bridgetown. The drive through the state forest just south of Bridgetown is just unforgettable with the roof down
Would love to see your opinion/review on an RX8 R3, it's got a solution to most of the problems you were on about other than reliability and fuel economy, I love being able to fully send it on a country lane and still being practical enough to fit 4 people in. Exactly the same gearbox as the MK3/NC just with more aggressive gearing too, would be super interesting to see your take on it.
I'd absolutely love to drive one! I always have wanted to see what they're all about! If you are anywhere near the South East and happy to feature it on the channel, let me know!
I've been driving mx5s since 2002,love them. Made the mistake in buying a new 40th anniversary rx8 in 2008,Kept it 10months and went back to another mx5.much more fun and better handling. I would love to see mazda stick a reliable rotary engine in the mx with 250bhp.dream car.
Thanks for the great video. I have owned two used Miata's. The first was a 1999 that i owned from 2005 to early 2014 and the second, that i still own, is a 2010 that I purchased at the end of 2013. Your summary at the end matches my experience. The car is so much fun that i can't really contemplate selling it. Also, both have been extremely reliable and affordable (regular gas, high reliability, low entry price, high resale value). There is a reason of course that so many of these cars have been sold. They are amazing cars and an amazing value. Thanks again.
I've owned a 2006 2.0SE for the last 8 years. It's the most fun, reliable, best handling car I've ever had in my 52 year driving career. I've owned a 3.8 E-Type Jaguar, 3 MGBs, an MGC, Triumph Spitfire, Lancia Fulvia, an Alfa GTV, plus many boring family saloons, hatchbacks and estates. Other than regular oil & filter changes, all the MX5 has NEEDED is a battery, 2 front brake calipers (the n/s seized), 4 spark plugs, 4 tyres and an air filter. I voluntarily fitted 4 new discs and pads as the originals looked a bit scored and worn. Mods include 25 mm lower Vogtland road springs to rid the 4x4 look, upgraded front and rear anti roll bars, a stainless steel exhaust system and a 5 piece chassis stiffening kit which includes a turret brace. I absolutely love the car.
What a bloody superb car!!! I can't believe the cars you've had and yet I do believe that this is the most fun! Mazda really knew what they were doing!
I totally agree. And I'm perfectly qualified to say that having recently bought one and done a track day. Although mine's the early NC without the slanted headlights.
I bought my used NC-1 from a reluctant seller, his wife was about to have their first baby so she told him they needed a bigger car. I can’t imagine a smaller NC from the a, b, and d models because this one is small but I love it. I was able to stuff a 17x9 wheels with 245 40 tires and is sitting lower thanks to coil overs. The suspension and wheel changes resolves the design issues and many people unfamiliar with MX5’s have asked me if I had a wide body kit. Great fun cars and reasonably cheap.
I rented an NC2 automatic last year after my EF Civic was stolen and my Dakota needed suspension work. To quote Jeremy Clarkson, I left that drive a broken and distracted man. I had to have one. I ended up buying a red manual car, and it's been great. I thought the shifter knob felt cheap, and after it literally fell apart in my hand, I bought a solid steel weighted knob and now the shifter is God-tier. The back end felt really sketchy, but the rear tires were pretty worn and now with new tires all around it feels very solid even on trailing throttle. However, I've always wanted a 2000s Porsche, and seeing that Boxsters are around the same value as NC2s, I started to consider trading the Miata. I went and test drove a couple Porsches, and now I'm really conflicted. In person, a 1st-gen Cayman looked and sounded more beautiful than I imagined through pictures. But to drive, especially the shifter, it didn't live up at all to the Porsche reputation of solid yet delicate tactile controls. The Porsche honestly felt, more than any other car I've driven, like an extra solid 1994 Saturn coupe, except with a wonderful engine. Now that's a better comparison than you'd think, but it wasn't so revelatory as to leave me broken and distracted. I still want one of those really badly, and I know the mediocre shifter can be upgraded, but the rational part of me is saying that the Miata is The Way. With the BBR 225 kit I think the engine would gain a lot of character, and I wouldn't be worried about the borderline-criminal design faults of the Porsche M96/M97 engine. Objectively, when I already have the Miata, the Porsche is best enjoyed on RUclips. But... My God was it pretty.
Love this!!! If you got a Boxster, I'd understand why: the larger cabin, better boot and even having a front boot too - they make it more usable, and hey the engines are undoubtedly more characterful. But having driven a 987 S Boxster, they just lack the driving personality of the MX-5. The car is practically glued to the road and corners so flat at any speed, I just found it was too on tracks for me. I love the MX-5 feeling like you're really driving it! And absolutely, the BBR packages regardless of cost really seem to add stacks of drama and excitement! The 200 is such good value for how much it adds!
A great video, I am in 100% agreement with all of it. I have owned only one, an NC1 GT. Purchased in the summer of 2016. Put way to much money into it in mods. Everything but forced induction. It’s small, it’s cramped, it’s no dragster. It does have a 2.5 but I still want more power. BUT, what keeps me loving the car is that whole horse and rider thing. My brother wanted me to purchase this M Roadster with a straight 6. Told me what a collectible classic it was…. As president of our local Miata club I felt guilty but I drove that little M roadster. What a let down, what a disappointment. talk about Horse and rider as one. That was more like rider and IKEA shopping cart as one. Absolutely no comparison. Even with all of the negatives, there is nothing like a Miata. .Thanks for the video,
Thank you very much pal and I totally know what you mean! I drove a Z4M Roadster for the first time this summer and whilst it's great compared to your average car it feels so numb in comparison to a Miata/MX-5!
I absolutely loved my NC MX-5 (Miata here in the colonies) A one-owner 2006 I bought in 2016 with 95k on it. The previous owner took meticulous care of it and it looked and drove like a new car. My previous experience with a "slow" little sports car was a 1960 Porsche 356B Roadster so I knew what a "momentum" car was. I had to pass it on as failed back surgery erased my ability to use a clutch. My "commute" was 2 miles and I generally rode a bike, so it really was a fun car. In 20k miles it was absolutely trouble free (I did have to replace the rear Bilsteins as one developed a serious leak). At 5'11" the cockpit was tight but I didn't have any problem on some longer drives up and down the Southern California coast. What the MX-5 was made for. The more you pushed it the better it was. I really miss it!
Enjoyed the video. As a retired senior, I'm on my 8th Mazda model since 89, (9th if you include my son's CX-5) including a 2015 Miata. Looking for another as I type this. Car is reliable , fun & our summer toy.dealer service is 110%. Since 1989, my 2021 CX30 decided it didn't like the battery anymore, new one installed under warranty.Looking at a serious deal on a 2013 Mazda MX-5 Club edition with 38000 km on it. Just in time for winter storage (in Canada)
I've had all four brake calipers replaced on my Mk3, and all four on an earlier Mk1. (Luckily only one of those eight was an actual breakdown.) Other than that, all three of my MX5s have been great. Would definitely recommend lowering (and then having the alignment fixed) -- it makes a huge difference.
my 2009 has horrendous rust underneath, Im also finding it sooooo hard to get in and out of and the seats are awful... BUT - I love driving it, its so much fun!! never let me down - YET!!
I have had my ND2 since late 2019 and know I will never part with it. Whilst there are considerably faster cars out there my car is plenty fast enough, and I think the sensation of speed is more enjoyable than more speed/performance that you feel a bit detached from. And that’s the point, you feel so involved in everything the car is doing. Driving round a roundabout at 25mph feels brilliant! Obviously it isn’t that practical. If you want practicality and buy an MX5 you have bought the wrong car. But the boot is usable for shorter trips, weekends away and for cramming in shopping. When I go to the supermarket I tend to go via an unnecessarily long and indirect route :-) And over the 4 years I’ve owned the car I have never attempted to drive it economically at all. The total opposite in fact, and yet it has averaged 41mpg. Overall it is just amazing fun.
What a bloody lovely comment! Thank you pal, I really appreciate this. I definitely need to push the channel more and actually one day, that could be a dream job too!
I just got an ND1 grand touring and still at 193cm tall I’m really enjoying it and making excuses everyday to go drive somewhere. Get stares and looks at every corner. I’ve driven mostly German cars last 20yrs and this is way more careless fun.
Absolutely loved this video - yours were one of the inspirations for my NC purchase! I'm 24 and the proud owner of a 2013 2.0 Sport - very similar spec to yours. I completely get what you're saying though about looking at other options before cleaning the MX,5, going for a proper drive and falling in love again. You have got me thinking, however that I definitely need to find an MX5 specialist and get the alignment sorted as I sometimes think it feels a tad wooly and I think I would notice the difference after 14 months ownership. Does anyone have any recommendations in Cumbria/the North West? You'll also be glad to hear I'm due to take her on track for the first time in the new year, can't bloody wait!
Thank you so much, James, this comment is a real boost! So glad to have been part of the persuasion, they're bloody magical aren't they! 100% get that alignment sorted! Join the MX-5 Owner's Club or the NC Europe one on Facebook and see where people recommend on there :)
@@petrolpoodle sorry for the slow reply mate, but I'm glad to hear it! Absolutely can't beat it for a first proper sports car. I'll have a look, I'm on the page already and really do fancy getting it sorted!
Hi James, don't know if you got sorted in the end, and my suggestion might be too far for you to travel, but AK Automotive in Rowlands Gill near Newcastle are the top boys around here for MX5s and they have all the gear to do the alignments. Great lads and reasonably priced.
I have owned a Z4 a MGf a Jaguar xk8 & the MX5 nc is way more fun & I can drive it like I stole it without worry. mine is a RS version manual Gearbox, soft top early model without stupid traction control, I did a header & a tune & a little suspension work & it is excellent. I would love another 50hp but It would become more dangerous on the road & it actually has plenty of power now. It is just a second toy car for me so no issues with it been too small. Get one even if only for a year, go down all the secondary twisty roads & you will love it.
I bought my first MX-5 (a Mk3).. today. After suffering, driving a dog of a VW T5, that has broken down more times that I have had fish fingers, I'm looking forward to smiling again whilst driving. :-)
That's mega, Hugh! Enjoy my man, you'll absolutely love it. EVEN if you had problems with your MX-5 they're the cheapest sportscar to fix, so no reliability PTSD!
Is this a relationship vid? Seriously, though, excellent work. I think you climbed the honest to goodness dopamine mountain all the way to its peak as only exclusive few have. Germanic reliability PTSD and mortality considerations aside, you stayed the course. 2.5 yrs. is a victory price in this category. In the end, it may be a matter of situational-best judgment... and choosing the dynamic option. Maybe that's the takeaway.
That intro made me laugh! Hahaha Thanks John, much appreciated. After shooting this video I have sadly JUST days ago sold the MX-5 but thought I'd do another video on that or just make a short mention of it in the next video - it was actually simply to free up some finances for more expensive video gear and to aid the freelance part of my journey now. So kinda didn't feel worth adding into this video as a post-shoot segment. I'm thrilled though that it's gone to a subscriber who knows the full truth about the little knock etc and is made up with the car. Great to see their day 1 excitement and he's already rust-protecting it as he said he wants to keep it for life!
I'm smitten... I always review the shizzle out of everything I buy, but more so with mechanical things. I've never driven an MX5, but I'm 80% certain that it'll be my next car. Your reviews have pushed me closer to 100%, and for that, I thank you! Fairly sure I'll go for an 09/10 plate, but will take on board your wise words and look out for the sport's package and LSD. Great format, and I love your style 👌
Thank you so much, Iain! This comment really brightened my day when I read it, I was just out working and forgot to reply later on! Thanks so much. You'll bloody love it, be sure to look for rust and grab one of the 09+ facelifts for sure :) Best of luck!
Brilliant informative vid. My first summer coming up in my 1st NC 3.75 Venture. It's now my daily for the school run! Now looking into a track day on the back of this vid 👊🏻
Thanks so much pal! If you're UK based, I really recommend Snetterton and Bedford Autodrome for first track days. They're such brilliant tracks anyway that you'd go back year after year, they're just great for being mostly (if not all) flat with huge, grassy run-offs if you were to be unlucky and spin out/overcook it. Also, there are enough straights that faster cars are very patient and don't do insane overtakes.
I have a 2013 PHT NC3 and love the car , had alway had manual 5 Litre Mustangs , This car is way more fun to drive period. Doesn’t have the horsepower but still better than cars with twice the power. Greetings from Canada. Really enjoy your work.
People get too bogged down with details most of us don't care about, this MX5 was brilliant, made me feel happy with every drive, drop the top and enjoy life. Loved it
Really enjoyed this review. I own a 2005 Launch Edition NC, complete with the BBR Super 200 kit installed by a previous owner. I can totally relate to the feelings of falling out of love with it, as I feel like I've been falling out of love with mine, and I've even started looking at stuff with more special engines, like the Jaguars etc, but much like you, every time I go out in it and drive it *properly* I remember what I like about it and genuinely for the money I paid for this, you're not getting a more fun car, period. I paid £6500 for mine, but the BBR kit is worth £2100 alone, and it comes with a hard top which I will likely sell for between £500 - £800, and it came shod with 4 brand new Michelin PS4 tyres, so really I think it was great value overall for a RWD sports car with 200 bhp @ 7300 rpm and only 1100 kg! If you get the chance I really recommend you at least look into fitting an uprated manifold and remap, as it unleashes a lot of character and noise as well as giving another 20 or so BHP and similar torque. Mine has that along with uprated cams and panel filter, and it's a surprisingly quick little car for what it is, the midrange in particular feels very muscular, and it's possible to get a real move on without revving it much past 5K now, although it will happily continue revving up to nearly 7500! On your car with the later engine, it will rev even higher, probably to almost 8000! As I was saying, I have been thinking about trading for a Jag XKR, 370Z or something like that, but then I remember it won't handle anywhere near as well, and it will likely cost massively more to run, and as someone who gets anxiety about big bills with cars, I'm not sure I'd enjoy that constant feeling of doom and the emptying of the wallet that comes with it. So I am thinking of keeping it after all, and maybe adding a good cat-back exhaust to make it a bit more shouty and hopefully give it a more special feeling (it worked on my old MR2 Roadster!), and then perhaps also some Meister coilovers (I'm on Eibachs at the moment) then get the alignment re-done. Add a Pioneer stereo like yours and that will really be all it needs to be a wonderful little car for not much money. Although the temptation is always there to go whole hog and go for some ITB's but that's a lot of ££££ for a little more power and a more noise (the main motivation!). Super video though, and very insightful given my current thoughts on the subject :)
Thanks Paul, I totally agree, once you've owned a well set up MX-5 it makes everything else seem flabby or expensive for the fun you'll get! It sounds like you've got an absolute winner there and one to keep!
@@petrolpoodle funny thing is I'm picking up a Boxster S tomorrow! I will always stand by with what I've written, but just feel I want something different, a bit more refinement, a sonorous engine, and a feeling of specialness. I am prepared to accept that it won't be as much fun for the most part in exchange for other areas, and of course, it'll cost me substantially more to run for the privilege.
The solution for avoiding locking the key in the boot is the just leave the key in the keyhole. I've made that a habit unconsciously and I never thought about accidentally locking the key in the boot until I've watched this video.
That's quite a clever solution, I like that! Just gotta remember not to leave them hanging there and walking off - which is definitely the kinda stupid person I am hahaha
I bought a four year old 2ltr. NC and used it as my daily driver for six years. Lovely car. Unfortunately, when I took it to my local garage to get an MOT, the mechanic called me over to have a look underneath the car. I was shocked to see the amount of rust that had accumulated since its last MOT. Her were holes in the cills that I could have put my fist through, and some of the pressed steel suspension components had all the mechanical integrity of weetabix. Needless to say It was so bad that it was dangerous to drive. As my days of doing major work on cars has long since gone, I donated the car to the ASDA delivery driver who expressed an interest in it as he was really into welding and doing up cars. My point is this, make sure that the underside is well protected before you buy, and if you have one and it hasn't been undersealed get it done as soon as possible. I used to get around 38mpg, which went up to 44mpg if I drove it carefully. I now own a 1.5ltr ND which, with care can deliver 64mpg on a long run, but usually returns 45-50mpg. I live in the north of Scotland so there is little urban driving for me. If anyone baulks at the idea of the 1.5 ltr model, may I say that the ND was every bit as fast as the NC, although the latter did have 140k miles on the clock, whilst the ND was a new vehicle. It goes without saying that I had the car undersealed at the first opportunity. I love the MX5, have owned two of them for eleven years, and I can't think of a car that I'd rather own. Thank you for your video, and I do hope that you are not suffering from sellers' regret!
I've got an NC but have always admired the good looks of the ND. I think the 1.5 is actually a very underrated little car. It was the engine that Mazda always wanted to put in the Mk4 but I heard they had to rush out the early 2.0 model as the Americans wouldn't buy a sports car that was only a 1.5. The early 2.0 NDs were slated for their engine, which, much like the NC, has a lot of untapped potential, but needs modifying to get the best from it. Hence they developed the later SkyActive 184 PS engine which was much better by all accounts. The 1.5 ND though - wonderful fuel economy for starters, as you've said. It's also by far the lightest modern MX5, with the kerb weight being around 1000 kg or maybe slightly less than that even (edit: it's around 1050 according to Google). Revvy little engines. 130 bhp should be plenty in a car that light really. BBR can also Turbo these up to 200 bhp and 200 lb ft of torque if you get bored. I just wish it had an LSD as standard, but that's not always the end of the world.
Thanks Harry and I'm sorry to hear you lost the NC to rust, that is such a sad shame. However, that ND fuel economy is simply amazing, I had no idea they were that efficient! What a brilliant car for Scottish roads too! No proper regrets yet as the roads are all wintery and greasy and my newest car (not yet featured on the channel, but coming!) has kept me preoccupied. However, come true summer I'll miss it for sure!
I am currently running my third Mini S. However, I have owned five Miatas, NB, NC, and ND; all have been bulletproof and fun. My last was a 2022 ND RF. For those trying to make the decision of soft top vs. RF, here are my thoughts. The RF looks gorgeous with the top up. With the top retracted, I was a bit disappointed. I was not crazy about the look. It was not a true top-down experience. I think if I were to purchase another Miata, it would have to be a soft top for the real experience of a convertible.
IF it's your main car, I agree with 60% of your comments, but as a fun 2nd car, they're brilliant and it's my second Mk3, the first one having a rag roof. My current one is just like yours, with the hard folding roof but in dark red. I am 6' 1" and don't find a problem with cabin space, infact it makes me feel secure. I get what you say about the headlights and the boot, fortunately my remote boot opener under the dash works, so not a problem. To me they are the ultimate fun car.
Thank you. excellent review. I'm looking for something to do a road trip in, Europe and something I can use at weekends. Was looking down the classic route but I think I've found the car. Cheers
Glad it was helpful! You'll absolutely love it, they're incredible cars! Do look super hard for rust on these or go on an owner's group and find someone who's been a bit of an enthusiast who's looking to sell :)
Thanks for this. And in particular, 8:20 and the point on alignment. I test drove one in excellent nick last week, having always wanted one but never had a go in one. It felt terrible. Vague, borderline ponderous, heavy, disconnected, lacking feel, feedback....everything. Power everywhere, for damn sure. But feel? Nothing. I was gutted. And here's the thing - if the guy hadn't let me test drive it I probably would've bought it!! Now, though, after watching your video, I've come full circle again - thinking it must've been in an OEM set-up. Maybe MX-5s actually are as good as I'd always hoped they were.
You're welcome! And I honestly cannot express it enough, the factory setup feels far more like a Ford Focus than an MX-5. The proper alignment by an enthusiast team makes it feel like a Caterham that you can live with daily. It's worlds apart!
It's surprising what you can get in there isn't it! I've found it perfectly do-able for all bar a week's holiday with a gal! Once you need to pack options you're big in trouble! hahaha Boot bag seems the perfect solution!
Yes, yes, yes! I love my nc miata! Unfortunately, my daughter loves it more. Only complaint is trying keep the soft top drain holes cleared. And more power would be nice so I could keep nearer to my son's c5 z06 vette.
I live in California and have owned a 2000 MX5 that I put in 225000 miles on, until I hit black ice, and when over a cliff and rolled down the mountain. And lived. Then I bought a 2013 MX5 club, which now has 122000 miles. For me it is a great daily driver. Plus going to the builder supply shops or CostCo, I drop the top, and load up.
Oh my god you're so lucky to be alive! Wooow!! I love that you got back on the horse and haven't been scared out of convertible ownership! What great cars eh!
With the boot release are you sure you haven’t pressed the little button inside the boot (on the rear panel) which disables the key fob and the interior release button? Easy to do by mistake and some people don’t realise it’s there
Thank you for the info chum! I had no idea this existed! I've passed it on to the new owner (sadly sold it JUST before the video went live but didn't want to make a mention of it in the video as it was purely to reinvest the value into some newer videography gear in the short term.) I've passed it on and hopefully that'll save new locks actuators going in. The MX-5 Restorers didn't think it was though when they looked at the locks
Hi there, I had a 1.8 2008 mk3 it had done 34ooo miles when I bought it ,it was my very first sports car it was fantastic I even took it a road trip to Northern France for 2 weeks and yes luggage thing could have been a problem but we managed to get two suitcases in the boot. The mistake I made what's the tradeing it up for a Mark 4RF model but that's a another story.cheers Phil form Newark
Ohhhh sorry to hear the Mk4 was a mistake! How come? They look awesome from everything I know, though I wouldn't have fitted in one - having driven the Mk4 roadster anyway!
Far as I'm concerned I think the build quality isn't up to scratch and the lack of storage i.e. the silly Cup holders and no real glove box. And the electric roof is definitely sexy but not a real convertible.
I was in my 20s when the Miata came out. It was then known that it was for women. Fast forward American expat benn here for 19 years and fascinated how all sorts of cars excite people here from glorified army jeeps the Landy to Miatas to classic Volvos to 80s BMWs😅 It is refreshing to find the enthusiasms Brits have for cars. For Americans we mainly like our American Ford Chevy V8 pick up trucks or more sensible Toyota's. In short, looking to get a Miata to revel in the two weeks of summer we get in UK. Life is short. Hastings rocks reminds me wee bit of San Francisco/San Diego. Thanks for great candid narrative 👍🏻
The trunk has a switch in side that defeats the fob and dash switch. Check that. I didn't have any issues changing the headlamps yes things have to be moved. I carry tool kit.
Had 2 NAs, one in the UK and my current, just for fun days, runner in Australia. Getting silly expensive to find a decent stock one here but worth it for the pop ups. You'll only take it from my cold, dead, fingers. No desire to modify it at all but each to their own.
Thanks Scott and what a fantastic two car garage you have there! You've got all bases covered! Where are your favourite roads for a good blat then? Out towards Pett Level/Rye?
@@petrolpoodle My favourite route is down new link road to ninfield and then back road to The Lamb pub on the marsh road. And return from Pevensey to Hertsmonceaux castle.
I have bought a GR Yaris to replace our 3.75, we have had it 10 years and it’s still special, that’s why we now have 3 cars, my AMG E53 and her two. Every time I look at the Mazda I think I just cannot let it go, it’s beautiful, pearlesant white with a black roof, wheels and mirrors…..and recaro seats. The GR is a hell of a lot faster, however the Mazda would keep up on the twisties I reckon. The AMG is in a different league so no comparison would be fair. The car I pick when I walk out of the house is the MX5. And yes the drivers calliper needs fixing.
Wow that's an amazing garage you have there! And there's something very special about the way the 3.5/3.75 drives, even stock. The inputs and feedback are just superb. I hope you've managed to keep the 3.75 amongst this epic garage!
I actually hadn't made that connection before, I just went back through my photos to double check the timelines and you're right haha! It did seize 10 months after the crash though so I don't think it's actually related. The garage said they had Mk3 MX-5s come in with driver-side front calipers seized all the time and I've had RUclips comments from owners saying they've had the same thing.
Great update, I was extremely surprised to see your car for sale recently on Autotrader and as my work takes me all over the UK I was going to contact you for a test drive as I was due to work in Eastbourne. When I saw it was no longer on Autotrader I assumed it was sold! I'm guessing you reconsidered and kept the car and I don't blame you. I do still want a Sport Tech mx5. Any advice on the head unit upgrade I would greatly appreciate. I am torn between the MX5 and a Suzuki Swift Sport, Both look great but I would love your thoughts on which is better, keep up the awesome content, cheers Seamus
Hey Seamus, Wow! I can't believe anyone joined the dots!!! I'm impressed and sad that you didn't get the opportunity to come down and say hello! Excuse the copy-and-paste nature of this next paragraph - After shooting this video I have sadly JUST days ago sold the MX-5 but thought I'd do another video on that or just make a short mention of it in the next video - it was actually simply to free up some finances for more expensive video gear and to aid the freelance part of my journey now. So kinda didn't feel worth adding into this video as a post-shoot segment given it wasn't about the car itself. I'm thrilled though that it's gone to a subscriber who knows the full truth about the little knock etc and is made up with the car. Great to see their day 1 excitement and he's already rust-protecting it as he said he wants to keep it for life! I can absolutely see myself buying another NC in the future though, I'll build up some savings and probably wait on a BBR 185 or BBR200 spec one so it feels like coming back to a totally different car! As for the Swift Sport, I had a similar comment below so my response to that was: Ya know what, I genuinely had many more laugh-out-loud moments in my Swift Sport! Despite the better steering, gearchange, driving position, drivetrain layout, engine noise and speed of the MX-5 it's the Swift that has the more playful chassis that gives you the confidence to play around with cheeky lift- off oversteer etc. I just used to cackle in that car all the time and yet didn't have any gripes to complain about. The MX-5 has SO much grip that you have to be a bit nutty to provoke anything but unrivalled grip. The boot was EVEN smaller in the Swift but having rear seats meant I could realistically transport plenty of things and people plus I got 50mpg most of the time! If I could only have one it'd actually be the Swift. If I was buying a track-focused toy and I lived in Scotland or Wales then I'd choose the MX-5, but truthfully I had more fun in Wales in the Swift both times!
@@petrolpoodle Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply. Must have been a very difficult decision to sell the MX5. I've currently got a A6 Bitdi (325bhp Quattro) which is in the garage and there's talk of engine rebuilds etc so I may have to sell as is hence the reason for looking for an alternative. So the lure of a Japanese fun car is strong! Be sure to update us when you do get a new toy, cheers Seamus
@@seamusgallagher4316 you're welcome and I'm very sorry to hear of your car troubles, that's sounding painful 😔. I am already looking forward to my next purchase next year, it'll absolutely reach the channel!
Guilty of locking my keys in the trunk! I've had mine for 10 years, and it has been my daily driver (was driving about 25 miles each way at the beginning, now about 7 miles each way), and I love it. When I finally retire it, or give it to my daughter, I'm going to buy another. I've never been as attached to a car as I am to my NC. Agreed on the alignment... when I bought mine, it went the next day for four brand new tires and a proper alignment.
I currently have an Elise sat in the garage but i dont enjoy it as much as my NA Mx5, ive been considering one of these but maybe with a bit of a BBR package on it just to liven it up a bit.
I do hope that this has been mentioned (I can't be assed to check all of the commentd) - but the NC2 does have a boot button to unlock it , just next to the bonnet unlock.
Extremely refreshing and unusual review. Cars are like marriages, you never know what they're REALLY like until you're in them. Surprised about the wheel/headlight. Very un Japanese. Like a Megane. If the lever worked for the trunk, you wouldn't have to worry about the keys at all.
Had my NC3 for a year. Still loving it. Getting it checked over at Mazda in about a month (hopefully dealer warranty covered) with a slight idle issue and then its getting a catless header fitted (already have it in my garage) and then hopefully down to Indigo GT for Ecutek tuning. I have a Cobrasport Road Backbox fitted already so I'm hoping the manifold won't make it too loud. I wouldn't do it again just because I'd like to try a totally different type of car (i'd probably go 3dr MK7 Golf R with DSG) as that is pretty much the opposite of the MX5 as far as performance cars go.
I like that thinking - the Chris Harris way of thinking. In that life is short and experiencing as many cars as possible is also a fun way to go about life, even if one could argue you should just stick with 'the best' for extended periods
Wich model nr 9?
@@bimmer332 now on number 10 a 2012 NC sport black on Meisters (ND is too cramped).
I love it! 🚗
What a stunning purchase! Congratulations!
Same story here: impulse buy while looking for a 'normal car' - best decision ever. Love my mx5 NC so much!
Made for motoring not repairs. Wise choice, mate.
The most fun car ever! I have professionally repaired cars for almost 50 years. I have driven all kinds of cars. I have never not smiled while driving any Mazda MX-5. They are all great cars.
Couldn't agree more!
Anytime that you’d like to meet up and make a video of my MX5, maybe test drive and review it for yourself, just message me. Mr McNeil 😊👍
I used Phil Brough to install my GC Fabrications roll bar after watching your video. So thank you, much appreciated 😊👍
@@tristrammcneil352 that'd be brilliant!! Thank you so much! I'd love to do a comparison of it to something of similar value (including the mod cost!)
The NC was a Top 10 winner on Car and Driver 8X, which is more than any other Miata.
Wow!
Owned a nc-1 for four years, agree with everything you commented on. My main complaint is the lack of support in the seats. The thing I love about it is, it makes me feel like I am getting away with something when driving. Enjoy!!
Totally agree! I forgot to mention that! I forget how great it is to be sat in a proper sports seat again with properly hugging bolsters!
This is such a stunning comment! Living the MX-5 dream!
Ooooo that's a brilliant 2-car garage!
There is a button to open the boot right in the center underneath the lip. You do have to have the key in your pocket or close by to be able to pop the boot. I didn’t know about this until I had the car for a few months. But I have had my car since 2015 and love it!
Bizarrely this one just doesn't seem to have it, thank you for the advice and help though :)
@@petrolpoodle Dang... interesting.
This was only available on the later year models, towards the end of the run, so NC3 basically.
@@M4rk58 His is an NC3. Mine is an NC3 2006 but I'm here in the U.S. Maybe that makes a difference?
Hey Larvs,
This is my favourite comment I've read in ages!
I also have a Mazda 3 for everyday use but I have no intentions of selling my Miata while I am still able to get in and out of it ;)
Inspired by the Lotus Elan & perfected by Mazda.
Where in Alicante do you take it for maintenance? Mazda Official or do you know somewhere else?
Full access to passenger Headlight is easy. Remove the bolts holding the washer tank ( 5 min). Gently move it up and away, The back of the headlight is now completely accessible.
That's useful to know thank you :) - I guess you'd just need a small toolkit in the glovebox or something in case - it was more unlucky that I was on holiday so far from anything useful haha!
3:18 LOL! There is a button under there. That's literally where the button is. Certainly there's one on my 2014 NC3.
Apparently it was introduced in later years! I looked under mine and could never find it!
To me, it was the coolest, most beautiful MX-5 ever made.
That sounds absolutely f'in incredible!!! What a serious machine!!!! And thank you very much!
Boxsters are shit this better
Great video thanks. From Rochester,NY test drove one for the first time about a month ago and was so thrilled that I am now the proud owner of a 2007 NC PRHT 6 speed and I can't stop driving it, its fantastic.
Thanks so much, Terese and a huge congrats! Enjoy the best value sportscar on the planet!
Thank you for addressing the negatives first. I watched the whole video because I found it interesting and engaging. Cheers!
It's very hard to drive anything else without it feeling podgy and uninvolved, isn't it!
@@petrolpoodle Worry free motoring. Unlike a Beck 550 Spyder!
Bought my nc2 a couple of weeks ago and love it. It's a second car so I just use it at the weekends when I feel like it and that feels like the sweet spot. Thanks for the video, watching this a few weeks ago cemented in my mind that I wanted to make the purchase!
This is amazing to hear! Really glad you took the plunge! Congratulations!
Absolute gold, thanks for this review. I’m looking at buying a hard top NC.
Thanks so much, Ryan, I'm really glad it helped! I'd go for the retractable hard top for sure!
Highly reliable roadster. Built for driving, not repairs!
Thanks so much pal, much appreciated! Yours sounds like an absolute beauty and it speaks volumes that you've had it for a decade!
@@petrolpoodlealmost a decade, time for an antifreeze change in the engine coolant and the air to water Supercharger system.
Great to see you back, I really love your vids 👌🏼
Thanks so much, Vortex! Your simple comment is one of the most uplifting ones! You'll be glad to know I'm coming back much more full swing next year, I'll have much more time on my hands compared to 2022 which has been nothing short of hectic!
I’m a new driver at 39 and I’m seriously considering buying one of these for myself to make up for lost time. You’ve certainly not put me off the idea.
Absolutely do it, you'll see so many owners speak of how they've had more fun in these than their big expensive cars of the past! 😁
Your first video made me buy a MX5 Mk2 (as first own car). I dont regret the decision, lots of memories attached. I thought of selling it to get a more practical 4 seater. But I think I love the car too much to do it
That's amazing! I'm so glad to hear! And those NBs are especially SO much car for your money that you might as well keep it as long as possible!
Don't do it dude. I had a 98 nb modded with all the goodies and sold it for a 6 speed V8 Holden Commodore 5 years ago, and have been itching to get back into one ever since.
This is a really well presented and thorough owners review. You should absolutely make more videos
Can't believe you've had it that long, really does say something for it! Great vid mate keep up the great work! 👌
Thanks mate, very much appreciated!
Two and a half years is long?? I owned my first generation Miata (1991) for 16 years. I've had my '76 Aston V8 for 19 years... It's all relative!
Just brought my 2012 sport black, can't wait to pick it up next week..

I love this comment pal! I really hope you're able to grab yourself an NC soon and come back to the club!
@@petrolpoodle got one! An 06 with 96000kms. Soft tops a bit shagged as it's the original but it's still water tight.
That sounds delicious!
Couldn't agree more with your comments and thank you for your wonderful, kind words too pal!
What are your hot tips for fun roads in Perth? I only know a few

Sorry for the late reply, I very much appreciate your comment sir!
I've owned a 2006 2.0SE for the last 8 years. It's the most fun, reliable, best handling car I've ever had
in my 52 year driving career.

Bruz it’s got to be the best: love/hate/love/hate/love Vid on NC MX5, in the history of MX5 Vids = well done
This is one of my favourite comments I've read in a while! ♥ Thanks very much pal!
Where can you rent one didn't think it existed

Is that really true? Hops so as I too have put a lot of my money into my NC.
I think i really want one of these.
Excellent review and i like your shorts
Thank you so much mate, you're a kind soul!
Aren't they just SO good!!!
Is the rust treatable? My fingers are crossed for you!
"A blank canvas" ... spot on. Some people like them the way they are and that's fine, but modding it is half the fun! Thanks for the detailed vid.
Many thanks pal! Hope to see you on the next one!
My mate just bought one, we gonna do it up so your mx5 vids much appreciated
Thanks very much Sanjee and glad to help!

I just got an ND1 grand touring and still at 193cm tall I’m really enjoying it and making excuses everyday to go drive somewhere. Get stares and looks at every corner. I’ve driven mostly German cars last 20yrs and this is way more careless fun.
They're just magic and I love the ND too! Amazing that you fit in it at your height!
Added the PACO seat lowering rails and its even a better fit.
Owned mine since new in 2007. Love it. Headlights access bonkers. Also had calipers binding. But in every other way love it.

Get one even if only for a year, go down all the secondary twisty roads & you will love it.
Your spot on. Very agile on twisty roads.
I test drove one a month ago and was so taken by it that I'm now the proud owner of a 2007 NC PRHT and absolutlely love it.
@Terese Farley UK purchase? I'm not sure what kind of budget... I'm thinking £5-7k.
Thank you so much, Iain! This comment really brightened my day when I read it, I was just out working and forgot to reply later on!
Thanks so much.
You'll bloody love it, be sure to look for rust and grab one of the 09+ facelifts for sure :) Best of luck!
@@petrolpoodle really appreciate your reply. Keep doing what you're doing 👌
I'm buying one this week maybe. Top spec. Best l can get
Brilliant informative vid.
Thank you so much pal I really appreciate it! And it's remarkable isn't it, it's just impossible to beat tiny, light and nimble cars!
Actually, quicker than a majority of roadsters.
People get too bogged down with details most of us don't care about, this MX5 was brilliant, made me feel happy with every drive, drop the top and enjoy life. Loved it
Exactly, as a whole this car just made me grin and enjoy myself the entire time!
Thanks for the review. Just bought 6th MX5.
Thanks Paul,
I totally agree, once you've owned a well set up MX-5 it makes everything else seem flabby or expensive for the fun you'll get!
I rented a 2013 Club and had a blast with my son driving around Bloomington, Indiana. Got a lot of smiles too. 😀 People love Miatas.
That is brilliant! And you're right, they're just joy machines!
@@petrolpoodle Open invite to pinch it!
Absolutely - they're just unbeatable fun at even budgets beyond the values of a Mk3 MX-5!
Thank you. excellent review.
Considered top 5 vehicles in the world!
Absolutely! When you think that this allows people of all walks of life to enjoy motoring this fun, it's a miracle car really
Also have an NC and the same knob 🤣. I agree with all your points save the boot, can actually get a lot of stuff in there. Love it so much
It's surprising what you can get in there isn't it!
Spared by the Mazda angels.
With the boot release are you sure you haven’t pressed the little button inside the boot (on the rear panel) which disables the key fob and the interior release button? Easy to do by mistake and some people don’t realise it’s there
Thank you for the info chum! I had no idea this existed! I've passed it on to the new owner (sadly sold it JUST before the video went live but didn't want to make a mention of it in the video as it was purely to reinvest the value into some newer videography gear in the short term.)
I've passed it on and hopefully that'll save new locks actuators going in.
Thanks so much, Joe! I really appreciate it all!
The trunk has a switch in side that defeats the fob and dash switch. Check that. I didn't have any issues changing the headlamps yes things have to be moved. I carry tool kit.
Great and well rounded review! Also your videography has massively improved!
Thank you so much, TAG! I'm really pleased that others notice the extra effort/improvement over time!
Had 2 NAs, one in the UK and my current, just for fun days, runner in Australia. Getting silly expensive to find a decent stock one here but worth it for the pop ups. You'll only take it from my cold, dead, fingers. No desire to modify it at all but each to their own.
I love this hahaha!
Great video, i have a grey mx5 nc sport tech and a civic type r fn2 championship white and live in Hastings! Love both cars. Thank you
Thanks Scott and what a fantastic two car garage you have there!
The caliper that failed was on the wheel that was hit in an accident...
Hey Seamus,
Wow!
As for the Swift Sport, I had a similar comment below so my response to that was:
Ya know what, I genuinely had many more laugh-out-loud moments in my Swift Sport!
It does indeed, it's just inside the car. I think all cars should have a button on the outside too
Extremely refreshing and unusual review. Cars are like marriages, you never know what they're REALLY like until you're in them. Surprised about the wheel/headlight. Very un Japanese. Like a Megane. If the lever worked for the trunk, you wouldn't have to worry about the keys at all.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! And also what a golden quote!
@@petrolpoodle yep. Funnily enough Chris Harris hates the MX5 though.
Picking up the car with the new headers tomorrow :)
Same boot key problem on my Streetka. Now just don't engage the latch. It does stay down.
