  • @MFEGoingDeep I had my eye on this location for some time as a place I wanted to check out but knowing this as a very popular destination for many fly fishing enthusiasts I knew I’d have to time it right so I could check things out without hindering anyone fishing or who might be getting ready to.
Being able to pilot the drone in and around all these fish was awesome to say the least! They didn’t seem too bothered at all but of course when I’m in a situation like this I try and keep things as slow and methodical as possible. I’m sure a lot of the fish were still recovering or trying to recover from their spawning activities and I do not want to cause any of them any undue or extra stress.
Towards the end of this video especially, you will notice some fish that had some large white spots on them. This is something I hadn’t encountered before and not wanting to take any chances I did forward some pictures to the Maine IFW Biologists for the region to make them aware of it. Might not be anything of concern but when it comes to something like that I don’t want to take any chances 👍🐟

Update: I did hear back from a IFW Biologist in regards to the condition of some of the fish in the video and was told it looked like Salmon wart disease which is something that has been noted in the area as well as wear and tear from this years spawning activities.

Been fishing GLS for over 25 years for Smallmouth but I have been told by the Hatchery attendant that GLS has the last Pure strain of salmon in the USA.

Lots of salmon!!! A few sick or injured? The small mouth didn't seem to bother the salmon. You're doing a fantastic job showing us a new world for most of us!!

Thanks Jeff! I appreciate that! It did seem like there was a few sick and injured and I did send some pictures to ifw biologists just to make sure they were made aware of any potential issues. But still neat place to explore! I knew there’d be a few fish there but wasn’t expecting that many.

Excellent work brother, very typical GLS salmon, 12-22 inches, 2-5 lbs

I imagine that these fish have seen darn near every fly & rejected most of them, including mine.

It always cracks me up because if it was a human swimming up the fish would scatter, but a Fyfish with 6 motors and 6,000+ lumen lights roll by and the fish are like “what up yo? “…. Subscribed! Hoping to add a ROV soon for dock inspections, etc but also for just fun exploring.. Cheers!

Thanks for subscribing! I agree most cases the fish are pretty accepting of it. I just try and move the thing as slow as I can when right near them. No sudden movements and it’s usually ok 👍

That is surreal how they just sit there and float. Did you get an answer to what the white spots might be? Great footage once again.

Thanks! I thought so too, just slowly gliding with the current. No responses yet but I’ll add a comment with an update or something if and when I do!

The white spots are Saprolegnia I think.

Yep, all clustered right within the red marks where you can’t fish 😢

they were below the dam correct? Do they go back downstream once the water rises?

    • @MFEGoingDeep
      @MFEGoingDeep  Месяц назад

Yes right below it actually. I think they were just holding tight for the fishway to be activated for them to move up into the lake. I’m sure they do migrate down as well with a rise in the water.

So... When we throw in the hook and bob, they are just chilling right there?!?
    Go figure.

This particular area is fly fishing only once you are 150' from the fish ladder.

    • @darkzak47

@@snakebite6x6x6 yeah it’s marked on some birch trees. There’s a big red dab of paint at least easily visible on the middle walk side, the other, not so much.
Had a family friend that got a ticket from a warden years ago claiming he was fishing inside the marker and he didn’t go back for x years and refused to pay the fine
