French traders and trappers were all over that part of our country and Canada even before it was our country or Canada. That is why you will find so many French names. We actually purchased a large part of the center of our country from France.
They were in the Great Northeast too. Lots of Battles between the British and French were fought in this area. If the French had put in more resources like the British Crown America might have been French.😉
I actually teared up watching this video. It is the home of my ancestors. My great great grandfather, Sam Zimmerman, and his Ojibwa wife, whose native name I can not find, but she was called Jane, lived there. My mother is a tribal member. I haven't been able to get up to Grand Portage in 10 years. Other family members have, but things always happen when I plan on going and I miss out. I feel at peace when I am there and there is this odd feeling of being home. I can't explain it. I'm actually crying thinking about it because I miss it so much and I never even lived there. So happy you got to enjoy it. Hopefully next summer I will find a way to visit.
You are right about there being a lot of French influences along the North Shore of Superior, it is from the days of the voyageurs,French traders and fur trappers who made their fortunes in the wilderness. They sometimes married Native women and their descendants are still in Minnesota. When I lived Duluth I found out about a man named George Bonga, a free Black man who was important in the founding of Duluth. Im pretty sure some of his family lived in the area I was raised, as the Bonga family donated the land the local one room school house was built on. My dad and his siblings went to school there and so did his mother and her siblings.
It's a funny thing to come across videos of your home. I am very glad you enjoyed Grand Portage! If you have any questions please feel free to ask. I currently live in and work in Grand Portage as the head of Natural Resources for the tribe. Chi-Miigwetch (Thank you) for sharing your adventure!
I am glad that you have been visiting the heartland of the U.S. instead of just the east and west coasts. Minnesota and the neighboring states are probably not high on most European's to-do list, but you can see that it is worth it. Also, the north shore of Lake Superior through Canada is a beautiful drive. Not too many touristy things to do but the scenery is fantastic. I found the border crossing at Grand Portage to be pretty smooth but can be a bit hectic at Sault Ste. Marie (another French name).
Great to see this series from Minnesota. I was born in Duluth and lived not far away until I was 18. I didn't appreciate the beauty of the state when growing up there. I do now when I visit.
Perfect timing for all of the waterfalls. They were all so full! And the view from the top of Mt Josephine is breathtaking. One of the most beautiful views in Minnesota. I wonder if the restaurant also serves happy trout. 🤔😅
Of all your adventures in the US, this area was not familiar to me at all so everything you highlighted was new to me. What stunning scenery. High Falls looks and sounds incredible. Sorry you did not see a moose but congratulations on meeting a French guide.
I don't know if it was mentioned before, but the music you pair with these travelogues is absolutely, stunningly perfect. I love your videos, just discovered them!😊😊😊
I've lived in Minnesota all my life and you saw stuff I haven't even seen yet! It was really cool seeing you visit Duluth and up the North Shore. Great video! Hugs and Kisses from Minnesota😘
It's a very clear lake, indeed. If you pick a spot with calm water, or a day that's not windy, you can go out in a canoe or a kayak and look down and see quite a ways down into the water.
22 min mark. clearness in water along with sediments clouding the water and light deflection,etc... is called Turbidity . I actually learned that up there in those waters. I also remembered that tree you walk by.😊
It's said so often here, but warrants additional mention - your video recordings are breathtaking! Never get enough of them. Also, there were some moments when you were so close the the border you were nearly able to swing one of your braided ponytails in Canada while the other caught the breeze in the USA! 🙂 More amazing footage!
Thank you so much for sharing your Minnesota adventures! I enjoy your videos very much. You remind me so much of a French girl, who should have been my first wife, but I screwed it up! I met her in Winnipeg Canada in 1955, and never should have let her slip away from me.😎
Minnesota has French town names because we were apart of the Louisiana purchase, which was originally French settlers first leading to the fur trade and stuff that came here. It’s also why grand portage is named grand portage because it’s a long canoe trip to the Hudson Bay company in Canada if you were a person who worked for the company. Hard times and hard work.
Marie, You have to come back to Minnesota and go back to the North Shore and Boundary Waters Canoe Area in the winter and experience the super fun activities during that time of the year!
Aanii Marie 😄 🦌🌅 The Natural Wonders of Gitche Gumee are a gift that keeps on coming. Grand Portage " tip of the arrowhead" is wild & beautiful. The river along the border would be great for white water rafting , that doggie was taking a risk , it would be so cool spotting an actual 🐺 you never know. There's a story (from MPR News ) about the epic journey of the ' luckiest she wolf in the world ' that crossed the bridge from Isle Royale in the winter of 2019. I'm sure if you were determined enough you could bypass customs into the US at your own risk , it's more common than people realize. The Waterfall was Spectacular , it's like a pleasant surprise around every corner there. I'm curious to learn more about the history of the area & how the Chippewa Ojibwe viewed the first French traders. It's remarkable how perseverant people can be to find a way no matter the obstacle. The museum showed how resourceful they really are at utilizing the land , the medallions were pretty. It was nice of Brad to share his know how & throw in some French too. You don't often come across a charming sign ( you can read it on pause) that old. It would've have been funny if somebody waved back from Canada. The Susie Islands has gorgeous views , it's a favorite with photographers , they were named after the falconer family who lived there mining copper ore in the early 1900s. It's home to some of the rarest plants 🌿 like rock cranberry , common bearberry , Norwegian whitlow grass & a few others , you have to be careful when walking in the forest due to the layer of Moss. You can see isle Royale on the horizon. It was absolutely worth hiking up to Mt Josephine , the views were Amazing , a feeling of being on top of the world , I wouldn't blame you for not wanting to leave. We've got to get you a pair of binoculars 🦅 🐿️ , you can also find blueberries up there. There's a look out known as the spirit little cedar 🌲 that grows out of a rock the Ojibwe hold to be sacred that's over 300 years old & was mentioned by French explorer Sieur de la Verendrye in 1731 , it's traditional to make a offering with tobacco to ensure a safe journey along Lake Superior , it's off limits to tourists but you can see it with a member of the tribe. I liked the Heritage Center with it's tippee ( maybe your spend the night under the stars in one someday even know the hostels are quite nice) I like the tallest fireplace made from the fine grained sandstone that's billions of years old & the birch bark canoe overhead. The exhibits were fascinating , craftsmanship at it's best , the detail of the needlework decorations are remarkable , I like that style of practical boots , I used to have a pair of moccasins that felt comfy & light as a feather. I noticed the Lacrosse sticks , the early natives played barefoot & probably the oldest sport in America , I would like to see you play it one day. Using media display to tell the stories of the Ojibwe was a interesting take .It's great seeing a village recreated that brings history alive . The bread bowl was something else , we take storing food for granted but back then it was a matter of survival , they were more hardy than people today. I'm glad you tried the fresh 🐟 trout & wild rice 😋 it makes a change , a better option than fast food. Visiting the black beach was otherworldly , a hidden treasure , nice & relaxing but I wouldn't go barefoot, there's a campground near by & coming from highway 61 maybe you also noticed the adventure park where you can tackle the aerial ropes & Tettegouche park has some of the best hiking trails on the north shore. What's better than finishing a great day out with a yummy 🍕 Your journey to this part of America brings pure joy , it's amazing what just a few states like Minnesota & Wisconsin have to offer , can you imagine much more , it's adorable how much of a symbol the moose is. Hope your having a marvelous week , the hats super , merci beaucoup, take care Marie 🤗 ❣️🏵️🐕✌️
Wow these nature videos are absolutely awesome Marie. Beautiful scenery. Very interesting information. And those meals looked delicious. Another great video.
Bonjour Marie! I'm sooo glad that you had great weather for so much of your trip, just that little bit of rain so far and none on this day! The waterfall was impressively loud! I love all the Native American diaramas that they have, it's great that people and places are honoring the Native Americans of those areas. Glad you got to try Trout and Wild Rice (I'm not a big fan of white rice, but wild rice I really quite enjoy!) Thanks for sharing! Bonne journee! ~Be Blessed
I love your enthusiasm for everything you get to see in your adventures, it's infectious. Your also getting quite a few stamps in your Passport book...I'm jealous 😁! Another awesome video Marie!
Thank you for sharing your experiences with the rest of us. I’m psyched that you were able to sit upon Superior’s magnificent shores. She’d no doubt love to have you back. I would, too, quite frankly.
Thank for enjoying our country. You are seeing more of it than most Americans do. I have been up in this part of Minnesota and it is just beautiful. I love the wilderness, even though it has been taken over by man. You can still get away from it all in northern areas and Canada. Fly in trips for fishing are available but they are very strict on their laws so don't try to cheat them. The wild life that you tried to see are dangerous so if you encounter any, take care not to try to get too close. I assume you will be going west in the future and you will get more opportunities then to see wildlife.
My neighbor is from Silver Bay. Lives in the Twin Cites, but has a lake home about 10 miles to the west of Silver Bay. The temperature during the summer is 20 degrees warmer away from the lake. Driving at night, one really needs to take care, as deer and moose especially in the fall, like to dart out in front of you. I'm doubting you will have time to visit the Boundary Waters Canoe Area(a week minimum), but that is an amazing experience. No motors allowed. It's paddle power only with a lot of portages between the numerous lakes and rivers with a backpack on your shoulders.
I grew up in Minnesota, it's nice to see the north shore still looking good. They'll tell you the state bird is the loon, but we always knew better. It's the mosquito as you learned.
I'm under a week away from spending 10 days in Northern MN close to the North shore. I've been there many many times, but your videos are definitely getting me hyped up! love your vids, glad to have found your channel!
Glad you got to come visit us. It must seem like a whole different planet compared to your home in France. It's good to see you get a chance to see the highlights of our home, I have lived here the better part of a hundred years and still have places that I need to see. Just got to Isle Royal for the first time last year. I wish you had seen a moose, but they can't be predicted. My Mother-in-law visited many times and die without seeing one. My grandson saw three on his first visit. Come visit again and I will take you fishing.
2:19 I love Java Moose! Me and my dad stopped there while driving from Thunder Bay to Duluth last November. I believe I had a hazelnut latte. It was obviously a bit cool along the lakeshore, but the weather was still nice for that time of year.
I am so happy you have gotten to see this connection between France and Minnesota. There is a rich history here and it all centered around the beaver pelt, believe it or not. It was fashionable in Europe to have a beaver hair hat. And they got the scalps from Minnesota
Thanks for sharing this with us. It's so beautiful up that way. I was only there years ago and saw Split Rock Lighthouse. I must go again and see more sights. Thanks Marie!
Well that was relaxing. It's 4:30 AM,I just got out of the shower and am enjoying a cup of coffee on this cool mid September morning. Thanks for posting this.
Thank you so much. I see a lot of "European Visits American." posts. But the others are all always New York and California. Delighted to see your series on the country in between. Especially, Minnesota my home state.
Thank you Marie! That was a beautiful hike you took us through. That may not have been a wolf. But, it was a beautiful dog. That is amazing that you were so close to the border of Canada. With just a little bit of effort you could have entered with nobody giving you a hard time. I love wild rice. It's good that you were able to get some. Can't always find it. That trout really look good. I'm glad you always have video about the inhabitants culture and history. I find the natural History just as fasenating. Well Done Marie.❤
Thanks for visiting our beautiful state!! I was born and raised in Minnesota, and I will never move away from here. Living here is so much fun, and there is so much to do and see. I hope you get to come back some day!
Great video! Loved the beautiful footage of hiking, falls and of course the food! Never been to Minnesota but I have a friend that owns a cabin on a lake there. So might have to check out now. Love from San Diego!
Really enjoy your videos. Getting to enjoy nature is a gift that I used to enjoy the heck outta and watching ya videos restores some good memories. Have fun and be safe ! :)
It was grand seeing you experience some of the Ojibwe cultural displays. I hope you had the opportunity too to try some wild rice with a meal harvested up there by the Ojibwe (harvest season is September to October usually though the rice is available if they've had good harvests). Thank you so much for this vicarious adventure you've shared here on RUclips 🙌. Take care and God Bless!
The black sand is the tailings/byproduct of the taconite that was produced for iron. Initially it was dumped into the lake for disposal before the Silver Bay taconite company was sued to stop polluting the lake. It was a very famous trial in Minnesota.
I just did this trip a few weeks ago. I was finishing the only part around Lake Superior that I haven't done between Duluth and Thunder Bay. This was the most amazing part next to the lake.
To clarify, it's taconite mining tailings, not actual taconite. Taconite is a low grade, but extremely abundant iron ore found in northern Minnesota. It's refined down a bit so the pellets sent on for smelting are more iron. There's also old, deep-drilled hematite mines that aren't operated anymore.
Keep on going French girl , state by state by state , we have 50 of them and they are all a little bit different (and somerimes a lot different) from each other.
I love your Minnesota videos! I mentioned on another video that I live here. It's very fun to see it from a tourist's perspective. Thank you for sharing your experience!
I'm enjoying your editing where you stop on an item and give its name. Very cool! Makes it much more interesting.Oh, and wow this area is breathtaking! I need to plan a trip around the Great Lakes.
Marie's intrusive thoughts kicking in: "I'm going to walk across this river and into Canada!" 😂 Glad to see you stopping by! Even though you were just outside the border. Loved the indigenous content in this video. It's always interesting to learn about the different histories and different tribes, etc. Bon mercredi! 🍻🍁🌞✈️🌍🇺🇸
What a beautiful video--reminds a lot of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan including Isle Royale National Park. Sorry you didn't see moose this day. That little bird you videotaped was a male Bay-Breasted Warbler. They nest in N. Minnesota, N. Wisconsin, the U. P. and northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan and all across Canada in the Boreal Forest. They winter in the Caribbean and northern South America. The female looks totally different--mostly all grey with white wingbars. Love your videos of Minnesota (that trout dinner looked amazing---had a similar meal at restaurant with friends on a canal near the Detroit River Saturday night.
We have traveled to these places many times and love them. Everything sounds BETTER in French. Really enjoyed watching it from a visitor's perspective. Love the videos. Merci
Marie, I thought this was one of the most interesting videos (with some gorgeous scenery) that you have ever made. I'm no expert on Taconite, but I know there are major iron ore mines in northern Minnesota. I think Taconite is a lower grade ore. I believe Silver Bay is one of the locations that they load ore freighters.
I subscribed from my last look at your previous video. What great camera work to your team! My grandma was French-Canadian Indian. And she lived her entire life in MN for 96 years.
Marie, it looks like you found lots of awesome locations to go and see on this day! I was really hoping for you to see a moose in the wild. The only times I've ever seen them were early in the morning or later in the evening. I hope you continue to see amazing locations on your trip! Take care and keep smiling!
Always love your videos because of your smiling face and happy attitude, but I think this was the most excited I've ever seen you! So close to the French part of Canada!
That's not a wolf, that's a Very Good Boy.

@@brealistic3542 I think the French were losing their heads about things in their country at that time no?
Thank you again for coming to visit us. You to go places in the USA that visitors never go. Well done!
That's why I love her channel. Most Europeans judge the US on one or two cities. Which is ridiculous.
So glad you got up to Grand Portage. It's one of my favorite areas. You're right the water is clear and very cold . I enjoyed your videos very much.
Beautiful scenery. Thank you Marie for the tour of Minnesota!

Isn't nature Beautiful. Just the vast wilderness makes anyone feel so peaceful ❤
You so beautifully showed the majesty of northern MN! Thank you!

Beautiful Great Lakes❤
I really enjoy your enthusiasm, and beautiful videos. I hope you had a great time.
This one was the best one yet! I love it up on the North Shore! You're hitting all the great spots! ♥
I've lived in Minnesota all my life and you saw stuff I haven't even seen yet! It was really cool seeing you visit Duluth and up the North Shore. Great video! Hugs and Kisses from Minnesota😘
Minnesota native Bob Dylan released an album called “Highway 61 Revisited”.
I'm from Chicago and we used to vacation up there every summer when I was a kid! Great memories:)

Another wonderful video! 😊
Thanks for visiting our beautiful state!! I was born and raised in Minnesota, and I will never move away from here. Living here is so much fun, and there is so much to do and see. I hope you get to come back some day!
Very beautiful nature and video too.THANK YOU
Great video! Loved the beautiful footage of hiking, falls and of course the food! Never been to Minnesota but I have a friend that owns a cabin on a lake there. So might have to check out now. Love from San Diego!
Very nice, Marie! 😀
Really enjoy your videos. Getting to enjoy nature is a gift that I used to enjoy the heck outta and watching ya videos restores some good memories.
Have fun and be safe ! :)
If you want to see the wildlife. Sundown is always better. Love your video's. Makes me Happy💛 🇫🇷
Lots of French from the French fur traders who helped to shape Minnesota.
I live in Minnesota and mount Josephine is one of my favorite hikes of all! Great video!
So cool you could be here! I live in Minnesota and Northern MN is one of my favorite places in this country. Glad you liked it!
The black sand is the tailings/byproduct of the taconite that was produced for iron. Initially it was dumped into the lake for disposal before the Silver Bay taconite company was sued to stop polluting the lake. It was a very famous trial in Minnesota.
Is it harmful to fish and the wildlife?
Woooo! Merci encore Marie!
Happy Early Labor Day from America Marie!
That was an incredible day. Hope you had fun. Stay well and safe.
Thanks Marie! Your vlogs are so well done. Makes us feel like we're experiencing it all along with you.
Your enjoyment always makes me smile.
Thanks for bringing back many memories of the Grand Portage area. Really enjoy your videos! 😊
Glad you liked the wild rice. Grandma's where you ate back in Duluth does a pretty good wild rice soup you might want to try!
Another gorgeous adventure. Thanks for sharing Marie.
Some of those markers are a reference point that is stable to measure the border from
I just did this trip a few weeks ago. I was finishing the only part around Lake Superior that I haven't done between Duluth and Thunder Bay. This was the most amazing part next to the lake.
Bravo tu es une jeune guide forestier!
when you posted your southern Minnesota videos, I did not know you were already in Duluth. It was named after Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut.
Another fantastic trip you shared with us. Enjoyed it very much.
Still waiting for you to rent a Mustang Marie!! 😂❤
I certainly enjoy seeing you experience the US. Especially the remote, wild areas. It helps me appreciate what we have in our country.
Minnesota is the Dakota word for sky tinted water.
So much beautiful scenery! Looks like a very fun and exhausting day. 🙂
I subscribed from my last look at your previous video. What great camera work to your team! My grandma was French-Canadian Indian. And she lived her entire life in MN for 96 years.
Awesome tour of northeastern Minnesota! 😊
Marie, it looks like you found lots of awesome locations to go and see on this day! I was really hoping for you to see a moose in the wild. The only times I've ever seen them were early in the morning or later in the evening. I hope you continue to see amazing locations on your trip! Take care and keep smiling!
Great video! So great to accompany you vicariously on this amazing adventure! So many awesome spots! Truly beautiful!!!! :0) 🐺
My old butt is late young lady and I gotta catch up. I'm a lifelong Minnesotan and I hope you remember our state in a great way.
That pizza though. Looks awesome
A French Girl living In Minnesota 💕
Always love your videos because of your smiling face and happy attitude, but I think this was the most excited I've ever seen you! So close to the French part of Canada!
