The storms on Lake Superior, when they happen, are pretty intense. It looks very calm now, but when a storm hits it really looks like the ocean instead of a lake.
Lake Superior IS cold! It is so cold that the bacteria that forms in a dead body to make it float to the surface of the water don't form. Bodies stay at the bottom of the lake and don't decay. Gordon Lightfoot has a line in the song "Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald" about this, "Lake Superior, it's said, never gives up its dead..."
I've stopped in Grand Marais a number of times over the years traveling from or back to Thunder Bay, but it's usually been just for lunch or a small snack. The last time I stopped, I just got a coffee at Java Moose. At least the weather was nice on that particular day.
I grew up visiting the North Shore pretty much every year. It’s so beautiful. I find it to be so peaceful and it always feels like a little escape from reality. Thank you for all your videos and showing our country in a positive light. Its great to see everything from another's perspective. Minnesota born and raised.
We used to swim in Lake Superior with some frequency-usually off Park Point after 2-3 days of very warm weather that would warm the surface water to tolerable. Still your feet might turn blue.

I have always lived in Minnesota!💖 I agree it is absolutely beautiful! I live on the extreme western side of Minnesota in "lakes country"! The county I live in (Otter Tail county) has 1048 lakes just within the one county! I am very much enjoying your videos!!! Thank you for sharing them and for visiting our beautiful state!💖
♥Another lovely post from a wonderful place. Usually, I live vicariously through your posts from places I've never been. It's been fun to see you enjoying places I know well! I'll be sorry to see this series end. Thank you!
Not much to say here except, thank you. Thank you for enjoying our country and presenting it so well. I hope you get to visit every state or area on your list and more.
The hills along the North Shore are the stubs of what were once some of the tallest mountains on earth. About 14,000 years ago the Wisconsin glacier came along and clipped them off, pushing them all across northern Minnesota. The glacier collapsed the ground on the east side of these mountains. When it melted it formed the the thousands of lakes across northern Minnesota.

Salute Marie 😊 👣 🌅 💢 Grand Marais a beautifully rugged & inspiring place , the waters are so pristine. Pebble beach looked nice & tranquil , perfect for skipping some stones. Split rock lighthouse proved fascinating , it really hasn't changed a bit. Life as a keeper must have been demanding looking out & taking turns during 4 hour shifts with it being more isolating in the early days & when the weather dropped having to sound the fog 📢 every 20 seconds. It was superb getting to see it cranked into action. The Frescal lens was developed by a Frenchman , using liquid mercury to rotate it could be risky if your not careful , the beam would have been visible over 20 miles away but some fishermen claimed it could seen as far away as 60 miles. The kerosene lamps were phased out by 1940 when the lighthouse went electrified. I didn't expect it to be that homely near by with the cute quilts , the music 🎶 didn't sound to bad , everything back then was made to last. It was a interesting insight. I recommend the website explaining how they hauled up supplies with a tramway & all about the numerous shipwrecks that took place before the lighthouse was built due to the great winter gale of 1905. Your fish chowder salad was crisp & tasty. The great lakes have a diverse range of fish like salmon , trout , walleye , perch & bass , lake whitefish are important for commercial fishing. Invasive species & over fishing has made an impact in recent years but efforts are being made to restore it. You can find the best fresh fish & chips at fishermen's daughter market. Harbors point was wonderful with it's rock potholes & vivid colorful waters. I like how you can just watch the waves roll in as the sail ⛵ come & go , It looks perfect for taking pictures during the sunset , so that's why it attracts artists. Bravo 👏 💦 for taking a dip , with it been so sunny you wouldn't think it would be that cold. The stargazing 🌌 is among the best in the world. It looks like there's some great places to eat , it's world famous for it's 🍩 , your 🌮 were top notch & the 🍦 was yummy 😋. The blue water cafe also a must for it's harvested wild rice omelette & cranberry rice bread. It's been the town's meet up since the 70s. Joy & co another hot spot for 100s of local artists from ceramic's & jewelry to wood & metal workings & the paintings are amazing. It has a real small family owned vibe about it that serves the community. It was great to see you'll back in Duluth at the bridge , impressive long ship , ha that dude looked so small. I need to get back up the the North Shore for some hiking soon, I just love it up there. Thanks for taking us along with you Marie, I love sharing your experiences with you! ❤
Salut Marie! I probably told you this already. I went to college in Ashland Wisconsin on the south shore of Lake Superior. It’s about 70 miles east of Duluth. I absolutely love Lake Superior.
It is always fun to see someones reaction to Superior. I lived on the Apostle Island National Lakeshore for many years in a log cabin. and I miss it. I spent many days and weeks at split rock, Castle Danger, Gooseberry, Two Harbors Grand Marais, Isle Royal. Worked on Madeline Island in lived in Bayfield for a time. I canoed the sea caves on the islands, Been inside the Squaw Bay caves during the winter and seen the naturally colored ice, camped on all of the islands short of Eagle Island.I have traveled around the world (Including France. I loved Versailles) and lake superior is one of my favorite places in the world.
Really enjoying the Minnesota videos! Kudos to whoever helped you plan your adventures. Lots of French influence in Minnesota's history as I'm sure you noticed!
Perfect pronunciation of Tettegouche! 😁👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏼 Silly us in our pronunciation of Grand Marais😂🤦🏼♀️ looks like you had so much fun up on the north shore. Love your videos 😊
I live in the Twin Cities and its been way too many years since I've been to the north shore, such a beautiful place. Thanks for coming, I love the positivity and enthusiasm of your videos. I've taken the full body plunge into Superior and its the sort of experience that literally takes your breath away as everything constricts and becomes painful. I think I lasted maybe 5 seconds.
Your obsession with Ford Mustangs and GTs is so amusing! I am glad you included your clips of the cars... it always makes me chuckle. When I was a boy, my grandparents had a cottage in the woods near Grand Marais. My biggest memory from there was eating wild strawberries that grew on the floor of the pine forest. They were small, but unbelievably sweet and tasty. Also, one night a moose was blinded by the headlights on the highway and it ran panicked into my grandparents' cottage, doing quite a bit of damage. I have not been to the North Shore for over 50 years, and your video made me want to go visit Duluth and the North Shore again to relive memories from when I was a kid. Thanks!
Bonjour Marie, a beautiful video as always. I especially enjoyed the lighthouse footage, what a beautiful structure. They play such a vital role in guiding ships. It's incredible how large freighters are, but even they can be vulnerable to the forces of Mother Nature. The Edmund Fitzgerald is a prime example of that. 🇨🇵🇺🇲
My friends and I would drive from Chicago to Grand Marais and drive deeper into the interior to canoe and camp through connecting lakes in the area. Our supplies for the week would already be set up with our food container and all our camping gear and we'd be driven to an area from our main lodge to a drop off point and map in hand, canoe the absolutely beautiful area. That week of pure rest was just what the doctor ordered! Love just love that place!
In the early 70s the last 20 miles of the gunflint was still gravel. They fu88ed it up and paved it to fedreal spec. about 1978. 12 ft. lanes with 8 ft. shoulders. Just ruined the northwoods experience.
I am thrilled you went up The North Shore to Grand Marais. The legacy of French Voyageurs is very strong there. I may have been there the same time as you! Good for you for feeling the frigid Lake Superior water, at least with your feet.. I hope someday you will have your own Mustang convertible to drive in France!
I live in Grand Marais! I moved here about four years ago. It's fun to watch you tour our tiny town. There used to be a restaurant downtown called Grandma Ray's, a pun on the town name.
Beautiful video. :) I grew up in the Twin Cities, but we'd often take camping trips to Split Rock as a family. I loved Split Rock so much that I decided that rather than going to heaven after I passed, I would haunt Split Rock instead. Ha. Also, I loved that you showcased our beautiful clouds. With so many lakes around, we really have some beautiful ones.
Whats nice about the orth shore is its 2 to 5 hours away from the airport so it doesn't get many tourists. Most visitors are Minnesotans. Its very peaceful and the air is so clean up there. The lake is stunning.
Made a trip to that area from Western Wisconsin for many summers as a kid. I always felt it was a world away from where I lived. Beautiful part of the upper midwest to explore.
In general it is cooler in northern Minnesota but it can get very hot too. You were cooler by the lake because all that water is so cold. On that same day you could have gone to the top of the hill in Duluth and been hot, or at least much warmer. Love your videos and so happy you had a good time in MN!
My wife and I honeymooned 23 years ago and saw a moose walking along the highway the day we left. Because the North Shore of MN is by such large, cold water, it effects the weather that if warm winds travel over the lake, they cool the land of the north shore, making the temperatures colder (and usually foggy) when the rest of the state is in a heat wave. It’s a great place to get away from the heat of summer, and beautiful state parks as well!
This is such a fun video! I love how you brought such a fresh joy of exploration to being in Minnesota. The freighters definitely had to be included since Duluth has such a big culture around the ships. I work on a lake freighter (not the Gott though.) And the horn sounding you heard was a salute. It's tradition for the ships to salute the lift bridge and for the bridge operator to salute us back. Basically just saying hi to each other. The big structure on the aft end of the ship is the house, where the crew live. I'll have a galley, oftentime an exercise room, a rec room, all of our sleeping quarters and amenities, and then the very top is the Pilot house or the Bridge, where the mates and captain give instructions to the wheelsman on how they want the ship to be steered. We're often out on these ships for 90+ days at a time so they are our homes. It's always fun going through the Duluth canal and waving to everyone that comes down to see us.
Lake Superior reminds me so much of the coast of Maine in New England. Especially Pebble Beach because the beaches are all rocks especially in Acadia National Park. My favorite part of Maine!!! Lots of French speakers in Maine, they emigrated down from Canada.
I live in the greater Minneapolis area and love Duluth and up farther north. It is amazing that we experienced Spring and then went up to Duluth after the Spring flowers were done and we got to experience Spring again! Beautiful video showing off the state! Grew up in Connecticut but I love Minnesota.
You did such a lovely tour of my home state and I’m so glad you had a wonderful time visiting! I spent a good portion of my childhood with my family along the North Shore and it’s always been one of the most beautiful places on earth to me❤️
You made my day Marie when i saw the obligatory dipping of the toes. Since my toes have only experienced the florida gulf coast waters for quite a long time now i dont think i could have done it....😊 another great video.
I’ve always loved the North Shore. It’s wonderful to see it though a new person’s eyes. A friend of mine became so enamored with it that she retired up there, and she has been enjoying life almost more than time itself can contain! 😉
Wow, thank you for the video. I was born in Duluth and lived not far from there until I was 18. Many times, I've stood in that same spot as you did, watching the ships come in. I live in California now, and I still take a look at their webcams now and then. I've tried to swim in Lake Superior, but as you saw, it can be just a few degrees above zero Celsius in the summer. Yes, it's cooler up north, especially in Duluth. They'd always say "Cooler by the lake."
So glad you were able to explore this little hidden gem region of the US and MN. Having had the pleasure of travelling through Europe, most Europeans dont know much about this region of the US. As a Minnesota native, Im lucky enough to go to the North shore atleast once a year. Thanks for sharing your point of view and so happy you enjoyed your time in our beautiful state. :D
Duluth is the home of Bob Dylan and Route 61, another famous American Highway (Album= "Highway 61 Re-visited") that goes North to South rather than East to West. Another wonderful video. Marie, you are truly seeing the USA.
@@YOSHI450R Born in Duluth, raised in Hibbing, parents from Odessa in the present day Ukraine. Original name is Zimmerman. I also like Woody Guthrie, and you?
Nice to see you enjoying our state. It really is beautiful. Everyone talks about the cold weather. It isnt that bad. Just something you put up with. Many people enjoy the winter and sports as much as the summer. The tradeoff is the beautiful weather the rest of the year.
The falls along the north shore were running the most I have ever seen them this year. You got very lucky. Angry trout is one of the best restaurants in Grand Marais. Hungry Hippie tacos is not imho. Some other food highlights of Grand Marais that were not shown is world's best donuts, which typically has long lines each morning, A new ice cream parlor run by a couple from Alaska, and Voyageur brewing company(that have some great food with their Rueben eggrolls in addition to their beer). I hope you got to experience Scenic 61 cafe, a French Minnesotan restaurant near Duluth. Looking forward to the next video's along the north shore!
@@actadiurna6733 Threeish years ago they remodeled the front? Probably longer than three years ago. It is the same restaurant though. Sven and Ollie's always seems full too, ya. I miss the crooked spoon that burned down. But they have a food truck a few times a week.
Awesome! Glad you got to see Duluth and the North Shore! I went to College in Duluth. Some of the best years of my life:) Thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing your next video in Minnesota. Hugs and kisses from Minnesota (Minneapolis)😘
The best way to see a moose is predawn, when it's just barely light enough to see, on the edge of a remote lake. You do occasionally see them on the side of the road or trail, but that's never guaranteed. Years back, I was a guide up in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
We live in Minneapolis Minnesota and was on the north shore yesterday! We go there about 3 times a year. Love the hiking and the waterfront. Yes, the weather can change a lot when you are along the shore. The temperature can be much warmer just going up into the hills. The lake can create its own weather.
Marie, I'm glad you got the chance to dip your feet into Lake Superior! It's awesome that you got to go see a lighthouse up close and to learn about how they work and what it's like to live there. There are many lighthouses in the US that you can actually rent for the weekend and have the full experience. I'm very happy to see that you're making an effort to have more FaceTime on screen telling us what you think about what you're seeing and experiencing! Your cap is fantastic, and I also hope you got to see a Moose on this trip. Thanks for bringing us all along on your adventures! Take care and keep smiling!
Im from Minnesota and grew up here. Still here for now. Anyways im glad you enjoyed your time in thebstate i grew up in. And up north were you filmed this is a beautiful spot to go for a weekwnd or a week. Im glad you had fun.
When I was a kid growing up in Duluth, we'd go swimming in the lake and the technique as get in a little at a time. Feet-wait 'til their numb then up to knees and wait 'til their numb etc. 'til you're all the way in and then the swimming and frolicking can begin. It was the '70s...
I brought my wife to a lot of these north shore sights the day I proposed. Started in Canal Park and ended up at Palisade Head (the cliff where the rock climbing was). She is from Iowa and had never been up there. It's wonderful watching you see these places for the first time and helping me relive that day a little.
Marie is my go to when I need to feel good. Your videos have such a calming and happy vibe to them. Thanks for all your work. And if no one has told you recently: You are good enough, perfect just the way you are.
Grand Marais is a really neat place. We used to camp fairly often in that area and it was always one of my favorite spots. Awesome hiking in the area too.
It is a cool town and aream and just northbound there is cool to. Me and my family when I was 19 to 24 my parents would organize a get together for my family and certain friends and we qouls have a nice group all go up there. . Great area. We did that once a year for 6 or 7 years we would get a hotel room on the lake side. So you would fall asleep and wake up listening to the waves hit thr shore. And a lot to do there if you go on the right weekend. And a good hiking spot too
its fun to see the beaches and shore now a days 20 some years ago when I was your age me and my friends did a trip like this, I still have the photo of us on the beach under split house light house and it seems to be about the only thing that hasn't changed.
It's so wild to see you in my hometown of Duluth! I'm so happy that you also got to explore along the north shore of Lake Superior - what a beautiful area!
It's fun to see an outsider experience what Minnesota has to offer. It really is a wonderful state and I am glad to call it home.
The storms on Lake Superior, when they happen, are pretty intense. It looks very calm now, but when a storm hits it really looks like the ocean instead of a lake.
You are making the ultimate MN guide book.
Just Missed the State Fair. Maybe a return trip is in order for that.

🇨🇵🇺🇲
I spend tons of time up there. So happy that you were able to come and enjoy it.
The Boundary Waters.
I live in Grand Marais. It's actually in late August where the Lake Superior water is the most warm! Glad you enjoyed your time here.
Beautiful video! Thank you for taking us along. ❤
I grew up in the Twin Cities, but we'd often take camping trips to Split Rock as a family. I loved Split Rock so much that I decided that rather than going to heaven after I passed, I would haunt Split Rock instead. Ha.
Also, I loved that you showcased our beautiful clouds. With so many lakes around, we really have some beautiful ones.
I love north east MN!!
Whats nice about the orth shore is its 2 to 5 hours away from the airport so it doesn't get many tourists. Most visitors are Minnesotans. Its very peaceful and the air is so clean up there. The lake is stunning.
Thank you for visiting our state!
Great video Marie! Thank you for sharing with us.
1The State of Minnesota should hire this girl as a spokesperson. She is so genuine and intelligent it could do much worse!
We're okay. This is more exposure than we want or need.
@@DystopianUtopia8 OK, don't accept my
I love your videos! Minnesotan here, west central area.
Vos voyages me remplissent de Serenite!
Amazing that you were able to find an ice cream that matched your nails. You sure know how to accessorize!
I live in the greater Minneapolis area and love Duluth and up farther north. It is amazing that we experienced Spring and then went up to Duluth after the Spring flowers were done and we got to experience Spring again! Beautiful video showing off the state! Grew up in Connecticut but I love Minnesota.
World’s Best Donuts!! In Grand Marais. The best!
You did such a lovely tour of my home state and I’m so glad you had a wonderful time visiting! I spent a good portion of my childhood with my family along the North Shore and it’s always been one of the most beautiful places on earth to me❤️
It's a Beautiful Cap ! and the forest is beautiful too
You made my day Marie when i saw the obligatory dipping of the toes. Since my toes have only experienced the florida gulf coast waters for quite a long time now i dont think i could have done it....😊 another great video.
Stunning scenery Marie, thank you for sharing your adventure. 😀
Bob dylan🙄
Bob Dylan is from Hibbing
@@YOSHI450R yep
@@YOSHI450R Born in Duluth, raised in Hibbing, parents from Odessa in the present day Ukraine. Original name is Zimmerman. I also like Woody Guthrie, and you?
Hibbing is Robert Zimmerman's hometown, not Duluth.
Glad we could share our home with you!
Amazing. Thank you for sharing your amazing adventures, Ms. Marie. As always stay safe and most of all, have fun.
Love this video. Thanks for teaching us Minnesotans how to correctly pronounce Grand Marais. ❤
You are a very good tour guide
Nice to see you enjoying our state. It really is beautiful. Everyone talks about the cold weather. It isnt that bad. Just something you put up with. Many people enjoy the winter and sports as much as the summer. The tradeoff is the beautiful weather the rest of the year.
I went swimming in Lake Superior in July (many years ago)!! Lots of shrieking and laughing!!
A lot of sun in this video GREAT. I didn't know GRAND MARAIS and a 1000 foot ship.Very impressive.Thank you..🐿🐿🐿🐿
The falls along the north shore were running the most I have ever seen them this year.
You forgot "Sven and Ole's Pizza". And I don't know what they did to the "Angry Trout". I could hardly recognize it in this video.
You're getting some sun.🌞
You really need to visit the real Pebble Beach in CA. Oh so beautiful. I enjoyed your video.
The best way to see a moose is predawn, when it's just barely light enough to see, on the edge of a remote lake. You do occasionally see them on the side of the road or trail, but that's never guaranteed. Years back, I was a guide up in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
Lake Superior truly looks like the ocean. That is how massive it is!
Beautiful Marie on the beautiful North Shore
I brought my wife to a lot of these north shore sights the day I proposed. Started in Canal Park and ended up at Palisade Head (the cliff where the rock climbing was). She is from Iowa and had never been up there. It's wonderful watching you see these places for the first time and helping me relive that day a little.
"Hey" !
Always enjoy ya videos. Keep having fun and be safe. :)
Marie is my go to when I need to feel good. Your videos have such a calming and happy vibe to them. Thanks for all your work. And if no one has told you recently: You are good enough, perfect just the way you are.
🙏🥺🥺
You should have driven up the Gunflint Trail from Grand Marias and rented a canoe for a day trip. You were so close to the boundry waters.
100% agree. Way back when it was a sight - no one paddling by us, we'd be totally alone. It was awesome.
Watching this video is so calming, like meditation. Really beautiful and relaxing.
And a good hiking spot too
I visited Split Rock Lighthouse 20 years ago. Loved it! Nice filming.
The north shore is my favorite spot in Minnesota. Someday I would love to live up there.
I live in Minnesota and have been enjoying your experience of our beautiful state! Thank you for sharing!
its fun to see the beaches and shore now a days 20 some years ago when I was your age me and my friends did a trip like this, I still have the photo of us on the beach under split house light house and it seems to be about the only thing that hasn't changed.
It's so wild to see you in my hometown of Duluth! I'm so happy that you also got to explore along the north shore of Lake Superior - what a beautiful area!
You did a great job highlighting the beauty of the north shore. Thank you and glad you enjoyed it. It is my son’s favorite place to visit.
