I've come to know -- and love -- Nielsen's Fifth only recently, and this is the performance that introduced me to this great work. Many of Nielsen's works take time, effort, and concentration to understand and appreciate, and the Fifth is indeed a difficult work to take in when one first encounters it. But it is very rewarding indeed! That Maestro Blomstedt has a special regard for Nielsen's Fifth is evident in this wonderful performance. The NDR plays beautifully, with impeccable clarity of sound and with every musician in top form. I've also listened to Maestro Blomstedt's recording with the San Francisco Symphony, which is also excellent. But, to me, this rendition with the NDR is especially moving in an ineffable way. Thank you NDR, thank you Maestro Blomstedt!
I've come to love and appreciate this symphony in these past few months. Herbert Blomstedt breathes life into his orcheatras. Excellent playing and conducting.
The first time I listened to this piece I didn't really like it. But I remembered it because of the snare drum solo, and for some reason decided to listen to it again. The second time I listened to it I was absolutely blown away by it. Now, it is one of my favorite symphonies ever!
I second your comment, as I bought the cycle of Nielsen symphonies years ago, and ignored them until recently. The drums stuck with me, and now it's my favourite - along with the 4th!
Where Stravinsky ventures deep into the forest, Nielsen assumes the role of wise sage who flies outside watching over the internal chaos that is deep forest.
It's a wonderful, poetic assessment. I've always found that the music of some Scandinavian composers, particularly Nielsen and Sibelius depict primal, elemental, natural forces at work, from the winds singing in stands of tall, ancient pines and stark, mist-shrouded rocky coastlines. Just so beautiful, especially in the hands of a master like Maestro Blomstedt. So happy to find this in my notifications this morning.
Nothing but profound gratitude for this! Exemplary production values, orchestra giving their all, great conductor, and Nielsen' s 5th. Cannot ask for more!
After looking at a program about Carl Nielsen, where also Herbert Blomstedt was intervjued, I have begun to listen a lot more to Nielsens music. With Blomstedt as an enthusiastic mentor, himself here at the age of 96, I have begun to understand a bit of Nielsens universas. This Sinfonie nr 5 gives a good entrace to his musical world I believe... And I admire Maesto Blomstedt for his lifelong commitment about classical music. One can hardly believe that he is still conducting. But he is! The 11 juli 2024 he will be 97.
He has to due to an accident in 2022 in Berlin where he fell and broke his leg. He had an operation and did a lot of exercise to rebuild his muscles. He returned to conducting, but he needs a slight support when entering the stage, and he now conducts sitting on a piano bench. He is still tough, getting up early every morning and doing body exercises first.
El lenguaje de las 6 sinfonias de Carl Nielsen se adelanto a su tiempo unos 150 años.Musico infravalorado. No por todos, somos bastantes los que le valoramos.
Nielsen's music, really starting with the Fifth Symphony, is full of conversations or confrontations, of the kind initiated here by the snare drum. These can be droll, threatening or ambiguous. Nielsen was very interested in questioning traditional formal procedures. Unlike the classical procedure from Haydn to Shostakovich, for example, the composer often ends a symphony in a key that is not the one in which it began. The acquisition of the final tonality is the crux of the symphonic drama. The essential characteristic of Nielsen's style is giving it the name « progressive tonality ». Nielsen knew that listeners can respond to the events themselves, to unexpected juxtapositions, departures and returns to sources. It is to this faculty, to this unconscious memory, that he addresses in his symphonic dramas. B major is the tonality he soars into for the opening of the second movement, and it’s a long, bold leap after the first movement’s journey. Here we enter the world of truly energetic allegro. It is also and always is a world of obsessions, the B of all the strings and timpani, the return of that ticking of the first movement. Then there are two richly imitative sections, one very fast-paced and on a subject that can't seem to move beyond its initial optimism, the other on a carefully advanced but leisurely and exploring theme. Finally, Nielsen makes a return that resembles the opening music. It provides the entrance to the resolution of the drama in a grandiose triumphant assertion. All the power and beauty are magnified in this music. *Lucien*
The 5th Sinfonie is a search for something that will never be found. You hear a lot of repetitions of the same motiv that end in a lack of result. But the 5th Sinfone describes the unstable life of the composer who is searching for a life solution, a solution which he never could find.

@@NDRKlassikThank You! Gosh you guys sound wonderful. But this is in 1996. I was wondering if Herbert found it easier to go batonless as he got older. It's interesting as Otto Klemperer USED one periodically as he got older when he mostly did NOT use one.
You can hardly hear the snare drum representing the battle - This movement is supposed to be a war between good and evil, with good prevailing- but not what im hearing in this performance

Is this what the lighting is like in the Elbphilharmonie or is it a quirk of the video?
Sorry, I am not quite sure about your question...?1?
@@NDRKlassik The light looks bright and harsh, with almost a pinkish cast to it. It's very unusual for this type of setting.
The lighting is actually intentional and is used depending on the mood. In this case, it has a pink touch.

At 96 I think he’s the oldest performing conductor ever lived. Am I wrong?
I think you’re right. He’s now outlasted Stokowski by one year and Skrowaczewski by two.
@@mishibirdAnd Marriner by two.
A momentous symphony. Up there with the best ever written. But disagree with the placement of the cellos on this occasion.
That is the traditional German order with Violins 1 an 2 sitting opposite to each other.
@@ursularissmann-telle4000 I do realise that, but with this symphony the depth the cello part gives the work is lost with this positioning.
