Quite simply an extraordinary and moving performance given the circumstances. How quickly we forget the past, be it recent or distant. Hats off to the orchestra and its great conductor.

Partial as I am to Schubert's "Unfinished," I was wondering what to expect from this "great" one in the somewhat predictable key of C major. Well...a fine performance is what I got here! I have a recording from San Francisco of a Brahms choral works program under Maestro Blomstedt, so that he is familiar to me, and although an audience in the Elbphilharmonie is perforce lacking, there's nevertheless a certain quite agreeable atmosphere here. Thank you again, NDR, from a devoted listener to Classic auf Wunsch on NDR Kultur! JAT

Taking the repeats, as Blomstedt does, the performance clocks in at a full hour, justifying Robert Schumann's praise of the symphony's "heavenly length." The orchestral playing here is outstanding throughout; the trombones at the conclusion of the first movement are particularly thrilling. (I believe that this work is usually referred to as Schubert's 9th symphony, not 8th, as listed in the RUclips headline and again in the description. I realize that there is no real 7th symphony, but I hope that listing this one as the 8th was an oversight, and not an awkward attempt at renumbering.)

Thank you :) The numbering has already been discussed here in the comments. There are simply different numbering systems. This symphony has also appeared as No. 7 instead of No. 9. The reason? There is a 7th symphony in E major D729 which is structurally complete but Schubert orchestrated only the slow introduction and the first 110 bars of the first movement proper. It appears then that D729 to some does not count as a truly complete work.

One of the symphonies has been removed from the list. What used to be No.7 was dropped from the list because the manuscript is a draft score with only its introduction and 110 bars scored by Schubert. Several other people subsequently turned the remaining un-orchestrated manuscript. Schubert didn't write what was called Symphony No.7, so it was removed - decades ago - from the accepted canon. It's that simple. Some people are just getting the news, however - and resisting it.
