So I own both. To say "DO NOT" buy the RF lens, you're missing the main point: focus speed. That is super important when taking photos. That alone is with 2k more.
Thanks for the feedback!
For a professional like yourself. I can imagine the it may be worth it.
I own the lens as well and for mere mortals like the rest of us, it may simply not be worth 2 thousand dollars more.
Thanks for the comment, the view, and the engagement!
Most people who do comparisons miss important points. You can get great images with 500$ camera that is not distinguishable from the expensive camera. But the point they miss is the handling and experience. After using some high end cameras and high end lenses I learnt that speed, handling etc make your life different. There is also an issue of low light performance. The images shared of grass are not what people who buy 85 mm buy it for. If we are to compare lenses then at least the images that should be shared should be what the average user use it for.
@theidea3998 thanks for the comment!
Amen, brother!
This is a falsehood that I ALSO initially fell for YES its STM but it ITS NOT AN ISSUE !!! The 85 L is fast sure ---the issue is only when coming out of Macro... its a better investment to buy the 50 1.2 than the 85 L -
I 100% agree with your advice to start with the cheap lens and let it earn you the expensive L version.
I started off with just the RF 50mm f1.8 and it basically has allowed me to buy all the L lenses I wanted.
And honestly the cheap primes have amazing performance too! Clients can never really tell the difference but I love my L series glass cause they really do have that extra special look that I appreciate.
Cheers man, great video
Awesome note!
It's totally fine to be a hobbiest, but my true passion is learning about making money with the very expensive and fun gear.
@@TMVVisualMedia Same man, Appreciate the video and looking forward to more.
Yep! It’s worth it to me for the 1.2 ALL DAY LONG! 💪🏻
Totally agree 0:53 vs 1:04 that’s an instant yes, comparing side by side one photo looks pro vs the other could be from my phone
I bought the Canon RF 85mm F2 and it sucks as a work lens. I mainly use L lenses, and I can tell the difference right away during a fashion runway shoot. Focus is slow and doesn't provide the correct colors. If you're just shooting in a controlled environment with slow and non-moving objects, then F2 could be good enough. There's a reason why L lenses cost more.
Thanks for the comment!
You are spot on.
This. Premium lenses are premium because they get the job done reliably and consistently, both of which are important for professionals.
@defge_cd , facts.
Hello. I have the problem that I wonder if I should spend a lot of money to buy 85/1.2 or 70-200/2.8 or 70-200/4. Both lenses are for portraiture. I should spend a lot of money to buy a lens. I hope you can share and help me. I am vietnamese. and wish you the best of health. Thank you
If you will do portraits then the 85mm is the best of the best.
But if you want a more versatile lens then I would pick the 70 -200 f2.8.
I own both.
I have been using the 85mm f1.2 lens for photography at night. What is your view on the effectiveness in this category of those budget friendly alternatives?
The 85mm f2 is quite nice. I like using it more than my 85 1.2 because the budget f2 is great for close distances.
@takemyvicture how does the F2 perform in dark environments in your opinion? Or was that what you meant? (Sorry english is my second language)
It performs well but it's tough to compare the two. The f2 does not compete with the 1.2.
guys, don't buy a lens for professional use based on image comparisson like that. Usability, durability and reliability are far more important.
Thanks for the comment!
@@TMVVisualMedia thanks for the video. You summarized very well at the end. The 1.2 is for professionals and who have the budget and wants the best of all. The 2.0 is for amateurs and beginners who wants good quality but saving is more important
I am fortunate to own both and I hope that my video can help someone make a decision one way or the other. I appreciate your view and comment! 💪
Thank you for excellent review🙏👍

I sold 85F2 and brought 85F1.2 DS. The DS version has noticeably smoother background. With 1.6x crop, it’s equivalent to 135mm f1.9. However the bright that comes in is less than F2 because of the DS coating. I hate why Canon does not bring the USM and the weather sealing to lower end lenses. Nowadays only L lenses get these. 85F2 could be better with USM and weather sealing.
I looked at the DS version as well I thought about it for a little while and I decided to buy the regular version and add a few filters.
I think the F2 version is such a great lens for the price. I think it punches above it's weight class.
Thanks for the comment and the view!
I agree. The slow stm motor on cheaper primes is crap. Plus, they don't even come with a lens hood.
Thanks for your input!
@@TMVVisualMedia Hi. What filters are you using to get DS version?
I'm not sure I understand your question.
great comparison! love your thoughts on this topic. congrats on the 4k hour of views and 1k+ sub, wish you the best!
Gracias, amigo!
Can you do this with the RF 50mm f/1.2?
Yes you can. But you'll just get a wider angle of view and less compression.
Thanks for the comment!
At the moment I don't own the 50 1.2 but when I get my hands on it I will.
Thanks for the view!
Thanks for the comment!
I'm surprised not many have mentioned the EF version of the 85mm 1.2 (USM). This is the option I went for; tried both lenses out in store. Yes the RF version has super fast focus, but for a hobbyist such as myself I'm happy with my budget option :)
Thanks for the informative video - would love to hear thoughts on using the older EF lenses with the RF bodies
Thanks for the comment! I will definitely add that video idea to my must record list.
Thanks!
I have used both the EF 85mm F1.2 and EF 85mm F1.4. I can say that the F1.4 is slightly sharper than F1.2
It would have been better for comparison video and photo to be side by side or do not cut between A-roll
Thanks for the feedback!
The problem that I have with people, not OP is this. Every cycle the last camera magically sucked, the last set of lenses magically sucked. Get everybody was fine when it was new. I own a '85 1.2 EF, and I tried the 85 1.2 RF on my R6 Mark II. I can honestly tell you that while the RF lens is nice, it is not that nice to justify $2,000 more.
That price is pretty eye opening.
I am happy with the lens though. Just the price is crazy high.
I end up using the 85 f2 more often because of its close focusing distance. Perfect for my product photography.
and to think i was here looking for a 85mm 1.2 vs 200mm 2.0! lol
To me, the most hilarious difference is that the non 'L' version has IS....like shouldn't it be the other way around? XD
I do think the contrast is a bit better overall in the 'L' lens.
I have mostly been disappointed by the color and contrast in non 'L' lenses in the RF mount. I had the 50mm F1.8 for awhile and absolutely hated it. Nothing about the end product looked good to my eyes. It is probably the same with this 85mm F2. They just don't coat them the same and they have far less corrections applied to the lens groups. The RF 'L' lenses also have blue color correction coatings/films in them that basically cancel out CA. I am fairly certain that the F2 has significant CA comparatively.
There is nothing wrong with buying one of these if you are just starting and don't have an idea of what you want yet, but for pros and people with more artistic sense, color, contrast, bokeh, f-stop etc will really rankle us if things aren't just so.
Fantastic input! I tend to agree with almost all your points.
I have to admit that I use the 85mm f2 for my product photography because of the minimum focus distance. It comes in handy.
The next L series macro is the 100 L series. But that lens is very niche in my opinion. But it also is only 1000 bucks. Which is the least expensive L series I think.
@@TMVVisualMedia I have the 100mm lens, and it is extremely worth the price tag.
I think it's portrait potential is a little better actually than the 85 mm because of the very small min focus distance and the 1:1.4 ratio. On a FF camera it's hard to beat!
Oooo that's a good point!
Thanks for comment. Awesome points.
My favorite for all purpose is the 28-70mm f2. That lens is my holy grail.
Of course one image is not worth 2000 dollars (and the difference is much closer to 3000 US$ today, with the 85 1.2 close to 3600 US$) more than the other. But you take these lenses out each month or so (maybe more if you are a professional), and you will make thousands of photos each of those sessions. So over 3000 photo's, will the pretty ones be worth 1 US$ more than the other?
Thanks for the comment!
This. And add to the fact that with the f/1.2 lens you'll have more keepers vs the f/2 lens because of the difference in focus speed and reliability.
good video, this is why i did not get the canon rf 24 to 70 f2.8, I went with the Sigma art 24 to 70 f 2.8 instead and saved a $1000 dollars. You probably own the rf 24 to 70, test out the sigma version and see what the difference is, I noticed the canon version was a little warmer , but when you can match it in lightroom, not worth the extra $1000
Thanks for the comment.
I would disagree slightly. Respectfully of course.
The Sigma and EF glass is wonderful and is a great bargain. But there is truly something special about native RF glass on an R body. I believe it's because the rear element sits much closer to the sensor.
To many, it may not be noticeable. But I prefer native glass.
@@TMVVisualMedia that is true, rf glass does bring out the full potential on the rf line of the canon cameras, I noticed the autofocus and the color was a little different, image quality was that noticeable, the canon was a tad sharper but not too noticeable.
But to your point, is that worth an extra 1000 dollars?!?
That's kind of my point with these videos. It may be worth it to some. But I think the masses may not even notice. Let alone a client.
Thanks for the comment and thanks for the view!
I wouldn't touch a Sigma lens... They are terrible lens for auto focus.
The point of a 24-70 2.8 is not just sharpness or rendering; but speed, versatility, and accuracy. You buy a 24-70 2.8 in order not to miss a shot.
In most professional (and even amateur) use cases, that extra K will pay dividends (especially if you do any kind of work). The RF 24-70 has undefeated AF speed, smoothness, and accuracy.
In cases where you have all the time in the world to take the shot (e.g. studio portraits), adapted Sigmas and the RF 85/2 become extremely attractive because their diminished AF speed doesn’t usually prevent you from getting your shot. Nano and Ring USM become luxuries in this case and are probably not worth the extra K if that’s the only difference.
Could you do a review for the RF 85mm f2?
Sure thing!
I own that lens as well. I have a few videos made already that feature that lens.

RF 1.2 is great for faster focus, Slightly sharper image and a bit more contrast and man its a beautiful looking lens... BUT that being said, I have the f2 version lol

Such a silly video. It’s like saying driving a ford truck at 25mph vs a Ferrari at 25 mph. Can you tell the difference?
Thanks for the comment!
I sold my RF 85 f/1.2L together with my entire Canon system and went with a Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art, I won't say which system it is though. :-P My point is... neither lens was for me, the 85L being way, way too heavy and cumbersome to use most of the time, I don't shoot expensive commercial projects or high-end portraiture / weddings and the 85mm non-L being in adequate for my usage... but if you are someone who is still in the Canon system, try looking at the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM instead. At least that has some weather-sealing compared to the 85mm non-L, is built better and actually has a lens-hood plus IS
Thanks for the comment!
I appreciate the insight and the view.
Even though you left us. Lol jk.
EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM is a nice lense. I had it, recently replaced it with the RF L though - here is why: wide open the EF 85mm f/1.4L sadly exhibits some serious longitudinal chromatic aberrations, which also have an impact on overall sharpness. From 2 - 2.8 on, it performed absolutely flawless. As this EF lens is over all a sturdy built workhorse, with snappy, quiet AF, it's in any case a better choice than the non-L RF. But I wouldn't see IS built into a fast quality prime, on a body with IBIS, as an advantage any more (unless it's a long tele) - in contrary: lens IS can sometimes cause slight focus issues when working with such shallow depth of field as a 85mm 1.4 provides.
Thanks for the thoughtful response!
I appreciate the view and the comment!
I like both lenses for different reasons. They both belong in my kit.
@@TMVVisualMedia I assume you are referring to the RF versions? Yes - Macro capabilites of the RF 2.0 could be a reason to own it in addition to the RF-L. When it comes to portability only however, RF 24-105L at 105mm 4.0 serves a a nice portrait lens, too, with a much higher overall flexibility.
You know I have been really considering the 24-105 L. Its very tempting. But I only wish they had a 2.8 version. I would get that In a heartbeat.
I'm considering the 24 to 105 L for my B cam. Currently I run the 15-35L on my B cam. Its great but I think I would like the reach of 105 and then the wide at 24 is plenty. I'm rarely shooting at 15.
Try to shoot a full human body size subject, with all of these lenses at their max aperture and see how deluded you are :)
Thanks for the comment!
Coming up on 1K!!!!
So close! Thanks for the view!
@@TMVVisualMedia Definitely! And this video was 1000% necessary. Everyone big ups the 1.2, but it's not going to make you more money. Buy it, when you start making money.
Facts! I was concerned that some people may not see the differences. Then half way through the edit I remembered that was the point! 🤣
How are your projects going?
To READ MARKETING BLABLA. No point.
My Sigma DG DN f 1.4 is "small" and renders sharp and beautifully already at f1.4.
My ef L85 f1.2 was too soft already on 24mioP (ok for women portraitures).
The DG DN(!) is even better then the (now old) GM F1.4
- even after lens distortion correction (wich it does needs).
You dont mention the 3rd f1.2 alternative BY Canon?
(To me my GM 50mm at f1.2 is more important than f1.2 on (that DN) 85.
