Great video. I also loved the EF 85/1.2 but like you had a hard time nailing focus wide open and once I saw the color fringing on highlights could never unsee it. The RF is a big step up. Still, I expect your example images would have been just as expertly lit and composed with a lesser optic!
Late to this party (video)... thanks Kevin for an excellent review! Your examples are stunning. I just ordered this lens to pair with my R5 and I am anxiously waiting....
Well Kevin, you convinced me, my 85mm f/1.2 DS is arriving in the next hour! I went DS coz for the money I wanted a truly unique look and being here in Texas too, that built in ND works for me! Also pretty much any low light, I use flash/strobe and just figure anything effectively faster than a f/2.8 is just fine in any low light situation I'll find myself in. For some graduations, after the ceremony, we take family/graduate photos and its almost completely pitch black. Shoot that with 24-105 f/4 + flash, or this last time I used 28-70 but still stopped down a bit to make sure everyone was in focus...high speed environment packed with people so not much time and room to make sure everyone is on the same plane.
Congrats! The DS is a fine lens and I'll bet you're going to take some amazing pictures with it. With your username being "White Rock" does that mean you're in the White Rock Lake area in Dallas? The 85 is optically my favorite lens in the entire RF lineup.

@@KevinDeal Really helpful to have such real-world wisdom from you Sir, thank you for helping us with our decision. Will purchase the 85 1.2. Thank you.
I am grateful that you took the time to check out this video and that my images were noteworthy enough to leave a positive comment about. That truly means a lot. Thank you!
i have this lens, and dropped it a few days ago. have a similar crack to the one you have. but lower down on the lens, where the canon logo is next to 85. whats the chances of it having damaged something on the inside? it still takes photos and focuses fine. is it likely the outside plastic absorbed the impact and the inside is ok?
The only way to know for sure is to send it in. I never did. I just keep taking pictures and it was fine. You CAN check to see if it’s misaligned. Put the lens in manual. Turn on focus peaking. Gently sweep the lens focus and pay attention to the false color. If it looks like it’s sweeping focus evenly you’re good. If it looks like it’s sweeping unevenly you may have an alignment issue that was caused by the drop.
I wish you had done some "out of the box" job and showed it's capabilities for landscape shooting! I really need to know if I can use it for landscape with the abilities that this lense has! 😢
If you like the 85mm perspective and you want an insanely sharp lens for landscapes, this lens will do that job. It's stupidly large and not a lens I would want to take for landscapes. If I'm taking a lens that heavy, I'd rather it be a zoom, like the 70-200, which also goes to 85.
I used to shoot with the Tamron Di VC SP 85mm f1.8. While it had that corner to corner sharpness and the image stabilisation was useful, I still sold it and bought the RF 85mm F1.2 to go with my R6. The low light performance of the R6 + 85mm f1.2 is mind boggling. I wasn't expected that. It is helpful when you still want to take photos in the autumn/winter and it's already dark outside at 16:00
I agree. As much as I love bokeh, I opted for the standard version of this lens, specifically for the low-light performance. Tamron makes incredible lenses. If they ever make RF mount lenses, look out.
I talk about the differences between the regular and DS versions in the video. The DS is fantastic, but I decided the bokeh in the regular one is amazing enough and I'd rather have the low light performance.
Thanks for watching. If I am presenting the lens to show it, the hood stays off. If I’m using a variable ND filter, the hood has to stay off, since I can’t put the hood on with an ND filter. When I use it in non-ND situations, the hood stays on for protection.
I am confused between this rf 85 mm prime and Rf 70-200 f2.8. Both costs almost same. Is the smooth portrait comparable with 85 if I use 70-200 leans at 135-200 range at f2.8? 70-200 provides me for flexibility in an event shooting, but I don’t want to compromise with portrait quality. Please suggest.
Interested to know if you get any marks on the front element by not using a protective filter, I have been using protective filters on my lenses (take them off for when it counts). They do get scratched up so am I going to get scratched lens by not having them on?
You absolutely run the risk of scratching without filters. None of my lenses have any. I have a warranty to protect them if I need to replace the front element.
I must be lucky as I have had the canon 5D mk II , 5D mk III , 5d mk IV , and R5 with a lot of different lens and have never put a filter on any of the lens ever and have never damaged the front element of any lens. I have destroyed a couple of camera \ lens by dropping them onto concrete but as far as just scratching or damaging the front element it has not been a concern. Even if it were to get scratched I don't think it shows up in the photo's. I have heard of people buying scratched lens off Ebay cheap and say they can't see the scratch in the photo's.
