It's not my style of pond. But, ponds are as unique as hair styles.

Hey :) Yes, and they say *I'm* OCD with the tidiness! Ha. Seriously though, tidying as you go means a lot less mess at the end. Such a big pond for such a small space. Honestly though I can get behind that lol. I think lawns are overrated!
Haha! Yes, unless they're nectar lawns they don't have that much benefit for wildlife as a "standard" lawn unfortunately - this habitat will provide many insects, larvae, water, hibernation opportunities and cover for so many creatures - I hope to get back to this pond in a few months to do an update for you guys :) Best wishes, and have a great weekend - Joel
What a great addition to this garden, goes to show no space too small to house an essential addition to a wildlife garden. They’re going to have some fabulous nature watching in their garden which was obviously already attracting an abundance of bird activity. The insect that this will attract will only add to this little sanctuary. Brilliant work Joel and team, great watching from start to finish you deserve a break over the bank holiday weekend.
I did get a break! That pond looks gorgeous, beautiful size to🥰 My back garden looks similar in size, nice to see how a pond that size looks in such a space. Gorgeous pictures of very grateful, cute birds to🥰🐦💦 They constantly kept checking the process in the background and not scared to come close to the humans, amazing 👍🏻🐦

They should do this instead of those ugly retention ponds. Maybe adapt the ponds into canals with naturescaping...

The neighbour is the star of the show! 😁 Enjoyed your return to South Wales in your vid about winter maintenance (or non-maintenance! 😊). Planning on getting a ground level wildlife pond dug in the new year, here in our town garden in Selkirk in the Scottish Borders, so making lots of notes watching. Bit perturbed by the lack of teas & coffees provided for you guys! 😂 Our guys and gal will get through at least one jar of Gold Blend completing the job and several packets of biccies! Fantastic, and revitalising to watch in such troubled times as these. What was the reddish brown material added to the upper edge of the pond at the end? Thanks
Hi Marco - thanks so much for your kind words and support, it means a lot. The reddish brown was additional subsoil that we had to bring in as there was insufficient soil of this low-nutrient type in the pond area to be able to back-fill and plant. The subsoil is best for keeping the pond clear and also allows you to plant directly into it, meaning no plastic baskets are needed :) You can see a few of the many ponds created this way in this short video here:

Joel your channel is great. I have a small 3 x4m wildlife pond that Mallards keep invading. Are pond nets the best way to keep the mallards off while not affecting other wildlife
Hey Scott - this can be a problem with larger ponds, we can't blame them for utilising the space of course but I completely understand how much "damage" they can do, unwittingly. Pond nets I do believe work as a deterrent and once the birds have learned that there's no access you can soon remove it. Only other thing, which is a lot more time consuming is to "shoo" them off when you see them, but of course if you're not at home all day and able to sit at a window this isn't as effective ;) Thanks for your kind comment and support, that means a lot - best wishes, Joel
Starlings are very aggressive birds and drum out and take over the native birds habitats. Not sure of their origin but we have them here in Canada also…
All that and not one cup of coffee for the workers! 🤣
I'm sure we were provided with coffee, not sure about biscuits tho!... either way the client is a very good friend now and I need to go back to this pond again next year for more updates on it :)

Lovely and lively pond :). Could you please do a video on the mosquito issue with ponds (is there one or wildlife takes care of it if made right)? Would love to make one but live with a person that's allergic to mosquito bite. Thank you for all you do!
Hi there - I will try to do this as soon as I can. The bats, amphibians, birds and larger insects (like dragonflies etc) that are attracted to these waterbodies all make a huge impact on any mosquitoes and their larvae, any water source will of course attract them but these wildlife ponds certainly give a balance. I am going back to this pond in a few months when I am back in Wales and will ask the client about how he's found the mosquito numbers etc. I am not sure which country you are in so it may be that there are higher mosquito numbers anyway, but I'll certainly try to include this information :) Thank you for your kind words and support, it means a lot - best wishes to you and yours - Joel
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton actually mosquitos are the only thing that stops me from making my own pond near the house (Ukraine). It would be nice to have a video about it. People usually get fish to rid of mosquitos larvae, set up streaming pumps, or use special bacteria that kill larvae. Neither option is ideal for me, but a pump that works on solar panels looks the most promising.
15:59 that plant is ragged robin is released saponins when mixed with water this can be use to clean but also poison anything that drinks the water if it mixes with the water.
Yes it is - the Saponins are in the roots and fish will not normally come into contact with it of course as it's a marginal plant - but these wildlife ponds aren't for fish, I do like fish in a pond but not in these wildlife ones as they add too much nutrient to the water and cause murky water and algal growth, hence filtration pumps etc are used in most Koi ponds etc. Best wishes - Joel

i think i may have screwed up digging out my pond, ive done a 4m by 2m with a 2 ft centre well, but because my ground is so uneven its kind of all over the place. also tried do some shelving but think my edges are too steep.

The water on the pavers at the bottom of the retaining wall - is that leaking from the pond?
Hi there - thankfully no, the pond is fully and securely lined, the water excess that you could see was from the pond plants being carried and planted into the pond area :) The pond is doing really well and the client regularly updates me with photos and video of the vast array of wildlife that uses the pond already - I hope to return in the next few months to do an update on the pond :) Best wishes, Joel

What's the white stuff on top of the liner ?
Hi Dwayne - it's industrial fleece - it is under the liner as well for protection, and then placed on top for extra protection and to allow the low-nutrient subsoil to remain in place and planting to be directly into this soil, negating the use of baskets. Could anyone tell me the rough price of purchasing the aquatic plants for an average size wildlife pond? Also the best place to purchase them. My work have just give me permission to put a pre fab pond we have on our grounds. Thanks

Where is the aeration?
Hi Coco - the native oxygenating plants provide aeration and if you ensure that you have 60-70% surface cover with floating leaved plants, and ensure you use very low-nutrient subsoil the ponds remain clear without any need for artificial filtration or pumps - they also don't include fish of course that cause ponds to become mucky, hence all the artificial filtration needed in ornamental koi ponds. This video shows just a few of the many ponds I have created this way and how they establish over a few weeks - I hope this helps:

What a lovely wildlife haven you and the team have created, especially after the arduous journey to Wales, that route is often a problem especially near Bristol. I'm off to the Isle of Wight next week, but hopefully when I get back I will have the energy to continue work on my pond.
