  • I've got over 23 years of film photography in my archive but I was so focused on my next photography project I kind of treated my negatives like 💩.... so err... yeah. At best my negs are sleeved and piled in boxes, at worst they are shoved 'raw dog' in LIDL bags.
    My friend Lewis Bush came over and offered to help me but some things you have to do alone. So in this video I go through how and why I am archiving my negatives.
    I hope you enjoyed that and if want to see my videos please do subscribe. I'm reasonably new to RUclips still and it would be cooler if you did:

    In this video you see a bunch of kit, from film scanners to loupes. If you want to get any of it I've found some budget priced stuff here. These are affiliate links, if you buy from them I get some silly fraction of a cut, like 1-2%. But hey, I was going to write down what I use anyway so it seems like a decent way to do it:

    Don't use those binders, they're awful and you will suffer for it. I used some I found on someone's bins for ages and while they are sort of folder adjacent the two rings in the middle only end up tearing your sleeves. They're also not wide enough so things poke out of the end and get crushed.
    Do yourself a favour and buy a dozen of the grey card Conservation by Design ones that are specifically made for this, they're the right size, have four rings for holding the sleeves and are boxes so they don't get crushed. More expensive but absolutely worth it. Parallax and Process supplies both sell them, you can probably also buy them directly.

      Good shout, thank you. I have a few "proper" ones that I got 20 years ago, you can see some of them in the video. For now I'll use what I have, on a budget and I've got to make it difficult for the hipster in 2080 who finds my negs in a charity shop ;)

      Thank you, when I was at uni we used the grease from our nose to fill scratches in our negs when printing in the darkroom. You heard of that one?

    This is why I took a 20 year break in my photography, till I could have an all digital workflow that results in an organized web based/html based system. Luckily, disk drives get more dense every few year, but take the same room on my desk.

      It is a nightmare! Ha! Truth be told I didn't get much more done since. I've only ever had one external hard drive fail and it was the first one I ever bought in 2004. Do you trust the cloud with your data? In a weird way negatives are pretty amazing, like a physical copy of something to reproduce from. They make negatives from digital files now I think.

      @@PicturesOnMyMind I have never had a data drive fail, only Operating system ones, since these get a lot more work. My photos are not valuable enough for the cloud, but I put hard drive in a remote storage unit periodically with a full backup, about 8TB of photos.

    I went through this pain in lockdown and got everything in the right boxes. Next step is to get the print file sleeves and binders sorted. This has inspired me to do so !!

    My gosh, that looks like pure misery to do. I'll never complain about light room again. Well, I will but not as harshly 😂

      Ha! When I was at uni over 20 years ago a Finnish friend and I had an idea of doing a themed exhibition called the dog show. And it would be loads of photographs of dogs by different photographers. Funny as I'm a cat person. 🐈

    • @PicturesOnMyMind
      @PicturesOnMyMind  3 месяца назад

      But yes. I have photographed lots of dogs over the years. I probably would take awesome photographs at Crufts but photojournalism is dead and no one commissions those assignments anymore.
