I'm Edward Thompson and I've been a pro photographer for 24 years with 10 years teaching experience as a Senior Lecturer in universities in the U.K.
I've been published by National Geographic Magazine, The Guardian Weekend Magazine, BBC, CNN, Huck, The British Journal of Photography and VICE.
I've worked on around 3,000 professional photography assignments for some of the world's leading magazines, charities and organisations.
I'm a pro photographer pretending to be a RUclipsr, not a RUclipsr pretending to be a photographer! 🤣
If you like what I do and want me to keep making it please consider JOINING my channel as a member for £2.99.

You've read this far so I think I can trust you.... this whole RUclips show thing is my crash course in film making! I figured by making a video a week I could improve my editing, lighting, sound recording and interview technique. The aim? To make a feature documentary film about photography! If you can help me PLEASE do

Weird Photo Walk to a 200 A.D. ruined Roman Fort! Let's Quest!
Join me for a stunning landscape photography walk around ancient Reculver in Kent, a site steeped in 1800 years of history! In this video, I’m shooting a roll of Kodak Portra 120 film on my Fuji GF670 analogue medium format camera, while my friend and former channel guest Paul Bence explores the area with his Hasselblad 907x digital medium format camera.
Together, we capture the haunting beauty of Reculver’s ancient church ruins, dramatic coastal scenery, and breathtaking landscapes through the lens of two iconic cameras-one analogue, one digital. Along the way, we discuss landscape photography itself, what makes a good landscape, I drop some film references and somehow are manoeuvred into...

Questing: Marshland Landscape Photography on a Mamiya RZ67
Просмотров 327День назад
This video was filmed exactly one year ago today on the 6th January 2024. There's some ancient marshland I always drive by that I'd wanted to photograph for ages as part of my 'Arthurian Quest' landscape photography project on my Mamiya RZ67. It was a very cold day and I enlisted the help of one of my girls, who was 4 years old at the time, to help me document 'the questing'. I think she did gr...

Well that was a nice Reculver Ramble Ed. Nice seeing your accomplices bonce, used to only hearing his soft welsh drone via the Idle Hands Society pod. Beautiful day. Great team. What's next from the round table exploration? X
Really enjoyed this one - charming, funny and interesting. The range of stuff you talked about too! Like ‘Gone Fishing’, but with cameras. 😊
@@simonlowephoto thank you Simon. Like Jedward, we're just a couple of boys living the dream. 😉
If only everyone had a Paul Bence to go walking with! Nice vid folks 😊
Loved this video Ed! I've always wanted to visit Reculver. You've inspired me to go. Looks great!
@@louisethresa for November we were very lucky with the weather, you should go!
Yes, I will go soon definitely. I've recently started medieval sword fighting lessons in Canterbury, so I've become drawn to visit medieval buildings and sites. The towers look amazing!
@louisethresa that's funny I did Western style sword fighting at uni. There was some crazy guy who made his own chainmail armour who was well into that stuff! Have fun I probably still got giant wooden swords somewhere
Loving your vids Ed!! Really relaxing from this view like watching the camp fire (you're the fire, the centre of chaos bringing it together) Pocket Ed is coming alive and it's good to see! Enjoy yourself Brother, you Sir are the master chef of your channel.
Thank you Stuart!
That is a cool idea for the Berlusconi book
Paul sounds like he's in a box!
@@bnrynlds yes there were audio issues! Ha! Accidentally recorded on two channels which is just as well as whatever reason every time Paul spoke he was totally peaking! Watching back through the video maybe the microphone was too near his mouth. But yeah you got me! you can have your money back! 💰
@@PicturesOnMyMind lol, sorry, wasn't a criticism. We're all learning. You've made me want to go out and shoot with my GF670W again!
@bnrynlds it's funny as I can't work out how it happened. I used my rode wireless 2 go mics as usual and our mic settings were the same. Very strange. I think we're going to start filming on Paul's Z9 from now on. And thank you, indeed, trying to get this to a level where we can shoot my documentary film!
Two of my favourite photographers in one video! A few great photos and some Warren Buffett level investment knowledge, what’s not to love?
@@dan_s_higginson thanks Dan! Buy the dip! 😉

Great vid Ed. Beautiful photography and fun chat, "There can be only one!" Arthurian quest. ;)
@@GELLISFILMS thanks Gav! Indeed!
That was an enjoyable video, a bit of sociable photography. Some people walk the dog, photographers can walk the camera, just to get out and about, see what happens. And I totally get 'made to be a photographer '...
@@AndySnap thanks Andy, for sure. I think there's something special when only two photographers go out together. No more though or it becomes a circus! Ha!
Really enjoyed this. Years ago I went on a mini Arthurian quest where I came away with this piece of wisdom.. Don't get the full English in Glastonbury.
@@EdwardIglesias ha! Thank you! A bit of fun with a friend. And the Arthurian ties are tenous in this one!
Huge thanks to Paul Bence coming on board to test out filming on the DJI Pocket Osmo 3 for this. He is helping me with my documentary film so we took a chance to nip out and have a side quest! Also massive thanks for James Blackburn for composing all the music for this one! That one where you can only see your profile is definitively a great portrait. I'm tired of looking at your pretty face. There are amazing "kids" cameras out there. Those that print receipt paper are far superior than that Mamiya you were wearing.

Oh,this takes me back to going on photowalks with my daughter when she was a kid.
It was a bit of fun, but I can't imagine how Winogrand made all that great work at zoos with his kids! I can't split my focus like that.
@@PicturesOnMyMind I remember tking my daughter while taking street protraits with a couple of fellow photographers, but she was a bit older than your kid, so it was easier and she absoluely loved being included. She took some great pics ss well

There are very few, genuine professionals on youtube that share their knowledge not to be popular but because they want to share it. I know one Optics expert that shares his knowledge on lens design who dies incredible work and has a lot of views.. I think there is interest in genuine advice from professionals, but flashy „content“ is just more popular making the actual good advice much harder to find. My hope is that people will stop wasting their time with social media and „content“ creators, and just do their own art.. So many could be great minds are seeminly forever trapped in a mindless gaze onto the screen.. scrolling endlessly with no objective.. just looking, getting some sort of satisfaction from things that speak to the primitive side of our brains.. completely bypassing any chance of creativity, activity or just relaxation.. The new generation is doomed to not only back and neck pain, but also to an immense lack of ability.. And art, the actually good stuff, will almost die off, with AI crap flooding the internet, and less people actually able to do things themselves… Oh man.. i shouldn‘t think about these things at 1am…
The room you're in is like my mind at the moment!!
@@davidxflood admittedly the pinball machine takes up a lot of real estate.... Ha! I tidied one of the bookshelves in December! It's a process
Hey! You! Reading this! Please share this to people! Thank you!
Love this! Feels like the photography version of Charley Brooker's Screen Wipe.
@@HisBeverness ah that's high praise indeed! Thank you so much, although I'm not as cynical as Brooker surely!?! Someone said that about my protest photography episodes last (last year).
@@PicturesOnMyMind I'm going to have to watch those episodes. I think it's more the dry humour mixed with video games references that give me the Brooker vibes. BTW I think the tone of this channel is great - you're on to a good thing! Would be interested to hear which RUclipsrs you DO rate. Personal favourites (aside from this channel obvs): @fredandharryborden (so good!), @alecsothyoutube, @kylemcdougall, @onemonthtwocameras, @mattdayphoto, and @willemverb
Yeah, they all check out! It was actually Harry Borden, many many years ago in 2013 who heard me interviewed on A Small Voice Podcast (episode 27) who emailed me to say how much he enjoyed it that probably planted a little seed for this show.
Wow that scrubbed up well mate!

What a moving tribute to your teacher. And what an amazing photographer he was. Not only do you carry forward his expertise as a photographer, but as a teacher too. Loved the story of your interview for the MA course., My son just got a Desmond from Manchester uni in film and history, so maybe there’s hope for him yet
@@paulamaguire498 I didn't remember for the video but I recall someone telling me "The best people get Desmond's". I'm now 99% sure it must have been Paul who said it. Thanks Paula
Thou shall not criticise RUclips Photographers - a lot of their content (which their audiece love) has inadvertently become satire / parady already which makes it even harder for you to parady them...
saying that, a good old fashioned reaction video might ruffle a few feathers and be fun
@@bcremin1 ah, true. Hmmmm.
@@bcremin1 the thing is I actively don't want to be popular on RUclips, at least not in the way they are with their err hem content 🤡. In reality I should be interviewing them to raise my profile and pinch some subscribers off them... but ugh. That's also why I didn't name any names in this video. I don't want to get into a thing with them because it would actually make my channel more popular. A reaction video would be funny (and easy to do) but again, it's that 'social media language' I see that is sooo puke 🤮. Then again so is a video game / chat video and I just did that didn't I? Ha!
I had this game as a kid! Unwrapped it along side Sonic 2 Christmas 94 i think. I don't know what my parents were thinking getting it for me, it was bonkers
@@thomasgrant1850 it was soooo difficult! That and Fatal Rewind....brutal.
This is so funny because i know exactly who you are talking about. There definitely is a real problem with overly confident people who have the ability to talk with such authority and create content online. Not just in photography either. These people are close to being cult leaders.
@@tomhopkins3431 It's so insane. So what can we do to change it? I believe we can do anything. What about if I engage in some good old fashioned satire? I do like to dress up. Or am I just being childish? Maybe I think doing what I'm doing focusing on other good photographers that I want to share their work is a way forward? Like ignore the loud terrible photographers and elevate the amazing unknowns?
Yeah I totally agree elevate the amazing unknown photographs and share genuinely engaging good work. But saying that I do love a bit of satire. I love brass eye and Chris Morris, so you could always take some inspiration from him.
@tomhopkins3431 great idea, I'm actually feeling more suggestable through the keyboard right now!
These days, there are pro' photographers, amateur photographers, and social media photographers. Being a jobbing pro' photographer has such demands, that over time, it really does separate 'us' from others. Live and let live I suppose...?
@@AndySnap I guess. It's so weird though isn't it? It's like we need a new indie photography to push back against the mainstream social media vibe.
Yes, live and let live! :)
@jbentosimoes what does it matter to you? When you've got a job to do you've got to do it well. You gotta give the other fella Hell 😜
Oh yeah, my stepmother does photography as a small hobby, nothing serious and it's still light years beyond what I produce as a layperson, plus it takes up a lot of her time. Nothing but respect for those artists out there. I will check out that game, thanks for the recommendation.
May your dreams come true as well!
God, I hope so. Thank you
Wishing you all the best for 2025. Sadly, there are a lot of muppets who think they know everything about photography. For me, the reality is the older I get, the more I realise how little I know about photography, and how I need to be more open to different ideas and styles of photography. Whilst, there is a lot of dross about, I do also think there are some absolute gems on RUclips: The Photographic Eye is a great example. I respect Alex as a photographer, and he is very knowledgeable and is able to get over information really well. The same goes with Ted Forbes, who is really likeable and enthusiastic about photography, and Alex has a superb knowledge of photography and photography. The other thing I love to do is look for interviews with photographers, and also see how photographers shoot. SHOWstudio is a wonderful resource where you can see interviews, shoots and a whole host of other things, within the world of fashion and photography. The skill is finding the right sites, and whilst it is easy when you know a decent amount, it is challenging for someone who is just coming into photography.
Your book sale of “ Welcome to Dungeness” finally arrived to me today due to a postal strike we’ve had in Canada. Initial thoughts: a great sense of community captured in a place I wasn’t expecting that. The pull out landscape was a nice surprise. It’s good to connect!
@@J.AshleyNixon yes I posted a book to Kyler Zeleny and paid for a speedy delivery only to have a message about a Canadian postal strike the day after! And yes, thank you very much for getting a copy and glad you got it safe and sound.

You see, this video essay and the story it has told has the potential to become a book :) Enjoyed this. It’s given me some ideas. I keep telling myself I should print more work, and this has helped. Cheers pal.
@@derrenleepoole ahhh! It's working then, thank you. My plan for RUclips is to become a better documentary filmmaker. Obviously this was just filmed on a phone but you know, it's storytelling.
@ it’s good story telling and honest. I think it’s important to show the realities of any artistic endeavour. For consumers of content like this on this platform, to see the very real likelihood that you may not sell a book or zine is quite grounding. You always have a positive vibe to your videos, seeing the upside to any situation. But I’m sure (assuming of course) you were quite deflated on the day, even if it may not come across on the video.
@derrenleepoole that day I was hungover from my old professors wake the night before, so to pay £20 to sit quitely with books rather than wrangling my twins at home on a hangover... Ha! It was still a win!
@derrenleepoole as for the tone of 'the show', well I've found that the worst photography lecturers I've had are very serious and absolutist as they are coming from a place of little empirical experience. Which means they have to play the 'Draconian card'. I'm experienced in what I do and can be light hearted as I have nothing to hide. RUclipsrs do the same thing in this strange 21st century 'hustler power of positive thought huckster social media hellscape' we find ourselves in. Failure is fine. You know who you truly are in failure, not success.
Highs and Lows, but we keep going because we love it! Stefan’s project looked interesting, really great combination of narrative and amazing images. Hopefully it makes it to book form!
