  • NEWS FLASH: This is just how I've done it for over 20 years and have delivered files to National Geographic Magazine, the Sony World Photo Award and The Guardian.
You'll find a load of RUclipsrs using their cameras to photograph their negatives with funky DSLR camera adapters. Thats not what I do or will ever do. To me, with my experience, this is the best & cheapest way of scanning my negatives. But if you want one you can get your DSLR film scanner holder here: t.ly/Ptejy
I use the Epson V700 to make digital contact sheets (not paying for them when having the film developed), and the Imacon for then scanning ONLY the final photographs I want to publish, exhibit or deliver to a client.
A shoutout to The Margate School here in Margate, England who now have (spoiler alert) a working Imacon 848 scanner that me and Ed (other Ed, Margate School Ed) got working! You can see information about the Still & Moving Image Course, new cohort starts October 2024 www.themargateschool.com/the-...
I'd put in affiliate links to the scanners but I can't be bothered. If you can use Google you'll work it out. Think of it as a side-quest.
You can buy my photo books here, including the recently crowdfunded 'Welcome To Dungeness' photo book: edwardthompson.co.uk/Book-Sales

Brilliant scanners those imacons! I miss my uni days using them as much as I could. Loving the auto subtitles “removing dust from these olden eggs”.
I’ve never tried these v700 scanners but I might have to keep an eye out. Great vid as always

Thank you! Someone didn't like it already! Clearly a fan of photographing their negatives with a DSLR 😉

That rolled back the years! Congratulations on getting the 848 running. I switched from a Perfection (it wasn’t!) but got better results from Vuescan than Silverfast. Then spent lots (£3k I think) on a used Imacon Precision II which was SCSI & envied the FireWire 646 & 848. Always found colour neg very hard to get colours right. E6 & B&W no problem.
Look forward to seeing the project progress.

@@baxterbradford7063 thanks you. After graduation in 2003 I was so bummed out by the scans of my Epson v700 I nearly stopped shooting film... The silverfast software helped but the colour negative scans don't come close to that of Imacon. We need to get in
Imacon holders for 35mm and 5x4 still... They are crazy money on eBay and always missing the plastic strip on the bottom.

At least you have established some scanning capability. In addition to monitoring eBay, perhaps an appeal on behalf of the school might unearth some holders (& possibly backup Mac computers running old OS just in case!). They were ridiculously expensive to buy at the time. A complex design with the spring steel & rubberised magnetic material. Plymouth Uni had some 646s I think a year ago & they were about to switch to digital scanning with Fuji GFXs, so perhaps Higher Education might be a fruitful source of holders & other resources?
It was the colour depth (dynamic range) of the Imacons coupled with that superb Rodenstock lens which made their scans sing.

@@baxterbradford7063 yeah they seem pretty niche these days. Most older photographers have got rid of them by now as they digitised their archive. Anyway we'll see what happens. That one holder we've got can scan all 120 film (645, 6x6, 6x7, 6x9) so that's a good start!

How much to come scan my negatives? I’ll donate coffee and cakes.

@@andrewlarking7492 I'm chatting with the Margate School about the idea of people hiring out the scanner for the day. It's still in the pipeline. But I think the closest competition that lets you hire an imacon in the south-east want 120 quid a day! If the Margate School did it, it would be a lot cheaper than that!!!

@@PicturesOnMyMind I’ll keep my eyes open for an update :)
I guess I could buy my own, about £2k but if it goes wrong… 😨
DSLR scanning is just a faff.

    • @PicturesOnMyMind
      @PicturesOnMyMind  19 дней назад

So what would be reasonable to come and scan at The Margate School? I think £60 for 6 hours is a bargain. Some places want £10 a single scan on an Imacon! Ha! What do you think?
