What I really like about Woolworths, is that it also raises the standards of other shops in their vicinity. I once lived in a suburb where the PnP and Checkers were sort of OK ....then Woolworths opened up their store, and all of a sudden Checkers and PnP revamped their stores and upped the quality of the fresh produce etc. I've been around a while so I can remember that our best fresh produce were exported to Europe, and the excuse was that South Africans were not willing to pay for quality. Then Woolworths opened up their food stores and proofed everyone wrong. Younger people might not realize how big a game changer Woolworths Foodstores were in this sector. But thanks to business visionaries like Raymond Ackerman and Whitey Basson, we also got the Hyper- and Hipermarkets for affordabe quality food stuffs. The business heroes in this country don't really get celebrated that much, but were true pioneers in what they were doing and contributing to all South Africans' quality of life.

Great video guys - it's like you guys lived in SA for a long, long time - the way you carry yourself and talk 😎 Regarding the supermarkets, it basically works like this - in the 1st 2 weeks of the month you shop at Checkers - you still got some money in the bank and want some nice groceries. Next week of the month before payday, you shop at the normal Spars/Shoprite/Local supermarkets trying to survive and make your rands stretch till payday. And then the final week of the month is payday week, you got that paper so it's all about living your best life now and treating yourself, so you shop at Woolworths 🤣🤣

We just got back yesterday! We had a great time. We were shopping in the clothing section of Woolworths and noticed the grocery store in the back! My girls got a kick out of that! They said it reminded them of Target in the US where you can get food and clothes in the same store. Now they say they have no need to go back to the US because they get everything they miss when we visit South Africa. Thanks for all your posts about S. A (and everywhere!).

Woolworths is the best when it comes to overall experience - their stores are consistent (unlike spar), they have a neutral smell (unlike spar or checkers) and their staff are generally friendlier. When you don't see an item such as eggs in this case, don't assume they're out of stock. Just ask one of the workers there wearing a uniform because they sometimes keep the same item in two different locations. You can get one group of eggs in front while the other at the back or middle.

When it comes to low prices, either Spar or Checkers, depending on what products you buy, but for quality, Woolworths is definitely the way to go. In my experience, Spar and Checkers Fresh produce don't last very long, and you end up spending more because you have to throw the food out and go back to buy more. I usually buy toiletries, cleaning products, and pantry food from either Checkers or Spar, but all my meat, fruit, vegetables, salad stuff, among other things get purchased at Woolworths, including the fresh fruit and vegetables for our birds. We probably spend around R5000 a week at these two stores, combined. Woolworths is more pricy, but definitely worth it. Yet, I have found that occasionally, some Woolworths products can be cheaper than Checkers or Spar, and Woolworths do have a lot of specials every week.

All the south african corporate food chains, pay slave wages and hardly any tax in relation to thier earnings. There is also a lot of price collusion. They stock with big foreign companies that have bought out most of our beloved local brands.
Please try Support smaller family owned businesses and street vendors.
Picknpay, checkers(shoprite) and Woolworths all existed during apartheid and just carried on after 1994.... Still all white owned. The ANC government has done very little to change the socio-ecomomic circumstances of most South Africans. Financially, most south Africans are much worse off than they were 30 years ago, the infrastructure is crumbling. We all have to start voting with our money.
We should have a massive street food culture, but permits will not be given if it effects a nearby restaurant that only caters to the wealthy. Be careful, south Africa might be moving towards what you are trying to move away from. Don't fall in the trap.
Cape Town is also catering to foreigners with dollars, euros and pounds, so rentals and property prices in Cape Town have gone through the roof and completely out of reach of the average South African.
Please enjoy our beautiful country, but please don't tell folks at home "it's so cheap here" because it really isn't for us. Love your content though and all the very very best ❤️
