When the Speed 1200 gets too big for my aging body to manage the Speed 400 will be at the top of my shortlist. Thanks for a comprehensive review Mr TAYM.
So as you know...I love all bikes. They are all superb...even the quirky ones! The 400 does exactly what it is supposed to do...and it does it well! There is a wonderful addition to the motorbiking landscape! And it is simply beautiful!
Thank you for the review, Taym. Inevitably, given that I'm now 78, the Guzzi 750 is going to end up being a bit too heavy for me. At that point, I'll be seriously looking at one of these Speed 400's.
Saw one at the petrol station in Fridaythorpe, this afternoon. Looks really good in the flesh. I complimented the owner on his good looking machine. Stated he was impressed with everything but the mudguards, because they didn’t guard any mud or crap from bike or rider! 😱lol
I was comparing the power rating of this with my RD400 in1976, which had according to the figures, 44 bhp, so we haven't advanced much. And i agree about the centre stand.
I'm 87 years old, and 3 years ago I dropped to a smaller capacity bike, purely due to the weight of a big bike being a bit much, pushing it into the garage etc. I opted for the Yamaha MT-03 thinking that I wouldn't be needing another bike at my age. But having seen, and watched reviews on the Triumph Speed 400, it looks like I might just have been wrong
Good review as usual . These 400s are going to be real winners for Triumph . I am very glad that you showed it's performance on the highway, which highlighted that you do have a bit of speed in reserve at 70mph . Very important when someone suddenly changes lanes and you have to jump into a gap slightly ahead because braking hard will have a tailgater slamming into the back of you . It always feels safer having power in reserve . IMHO. Anyways , you showed the Daytona sticking it's nose out at Lings . So it's the Daytona next is it ? 😂
Hi nice to see you had the 400 for a nice long time I went to triumph Monday lovely day for a ride and booked my rocket in for 1st service I’m in the market to buy another speedmaster and saw there red one in there have you tried the speedmaster out they are lovely bike I think as well what are you going to try next anyway ride safe take care
Nice job TAYM. Excellent demonstration of it's overtaking ability. Riding it through it's break-in period and getting the 1st service done was definitely taking one for the team there. The 72mph restriction on the Classic 350 is a bit of a shame as there's quite a bit more to go. Though I rarely use Ernie on the faster roads, it would be nice to be able to occasionally squirt past a line of 60mph lorries without an Audi coming up fast and furious behind.
Yes, totally agree 😁 and with the Triumph, it’s from 75 it gets lively 😁 a real good fun bike but perhaps lacks the relaxation of the enfields 😁 can’t have everything I guess 😁 thanks PGB 😁
Not seen any about yet TAYM but I reckon that's gonna change I think they will be everywhere this summer I don't think Triumph is gonna be able to cope with the demand to be honest . and I am sure that Royal Enfield has a real competitor here although this pare aren't exactly classics but they kick out that bit more umff I could be wrong of course cheers 👌👍
You are not wrong !. My Royal Enfield Meteor is a handy bike but its 350cc engine has been stifled and regulated not to allow more than a shade over 70mph. And it hates long uphill stretches. Not good enough, whereas the Triumph has the top end get up and go.
Just hit 600 miles on mine. The bike is much better than it had any right to be for the price. I will disagree with you on the seat, though - but as I bought it for short (under 200 miles) rides, it's tolerable. And I REALLY want a center stand. One thing I would change would be the instruments - I'd rather have an analog tach and a digital speed readout.
It's pretty obvious you are struck with the bike, I have one on order hopefully delivery this month, any advice on any of the desirability of the available accessories? As an occasional commuter on it will it deliver 80 plus mpg you didn't mention what the trip computer has indicated on the fuel consumption?
Thanks AB 😁 I haven’t looked at accessories yet 🤔 I hope they don’t price them the same as they do for the bigger bikes otherwise the cost will double the price of the bike 😂😂😂 I am not sure how reliable the trip computer is 🤔 but I reckon I was getting between 70 and 80 on mixed riding but maybe less on the faster longer runs😁
Mine would not start the first day that i got it. Got it to the shop and they i guess fixed it and now it is doing it all over again and it is back in the shop again. I made a video of what it is doing on my channel. I would turn the key to start and and got nothing, i would then turn it off and turn it back on and it would fire right up. It does this ALL THE TIME!!
Morning TAYM it’s sounds to me like you should of bought the speed 400 instead of the SV650 🤔 or for more comfort and character Moto Guzzi V7 850 😜 carry on that man Caio for now tat ta 👍🏻
The 400 ninja is now replaced with the 500. I did ride the 400 a little while ago and thought it was a well sorted bike. Quicker and smoother and perhaps better equipped. It is also more money than the triumph but guess a better all round bike. 😁 the problem is one of styling I think. If you don’t want a sports bike you wouldn’t go for the ninja 😁 there is also the cbr500 to consider🤔 but like the ninja, once you get to those prices there are a lot of others to consider 🤔 A very good question 😁 thanks S 😁
I can't believe two up on a 400 with single disc made no difference, yeah. I notice the difference on my sv650 when two up. Only the vfr can carry pillions two up with no difference. Yeah.
@@TAYM yes probably down to the size of the pillion passenger I reckon. I got rid of my cbf500 as I didn't like its two up capability, much more sluggish on acceleration and harder to stop with the single disc and it had 56hp.

Sorry to be a downer but it's also an annual oil change OR 10,000 miles - whichever comes first. I don't get the fixation with mileage - for most riders, you're looking at an annual service.
When they say 16000km service intervals they mean valve adjustment oil changes are done every 5000km or yearly. You wouldn't want to wait till 16k do to oil change😂🤣 & manual say valve adjustment service 16k & oil annually or 5000km.On my Trident 🔱 Dealership put Valve adjustment service in the dash & counts down from 16k & you'll get a reminder about 50-100km before 5000km for oil change & check over & a picture of a crescent 🔧on dash.
I was trying to think of other 40bhp 400cc bikes and came up with the Yamaha RD 400 which had reputation as a bit of a naughty boy bike… 40 bhp, 41.1 Nm and a wet weight 171kg. Compare it to the Triumph Speed 400… 39.5 bhp, 37.5 Nm and a wet weight of 170 kg. Not much in it. Just saying.
