Folks - Please no more comments on me being "woke". My comments in this video were purely meant as a light hearted attempt at some humour - clearly my attempt at irony failed!!
Amazing that some people need that pointed out 😂
Great outro music on this one as well
@TheMissendenFlyer Made me smile!
I got a good chuckle from it
@@TheMissendenFlyer agreed Andy ! 👍🏻
Went for a haircut after watching this video. Came back via the triumph showroom. One test ride later, found my next bike. Muchas gracias.
That was an expensive haircut. Like when I go to the shop just for milk and end up spending £40
SHE is always a reference to objects of “transport” . As in she sails beautifully , she drives like a dream . It is a term of honour , respect and endearment .
Exactly this! Though the old mantra banded around about vehicles being female, as they cost money - it was tongue in cheek, a bit of fun, like the cheeky birthday cards you see with the naked old folks on. It's not there to offend - but people these days have gotten softer to a lot of things, and seem to want to find hurt and offence in everything; when it simply isn't there.
A lot of people need to realise that their virtual life in Twitter or Facebook, doesn't translate into reality, and that their echo chambers have no place in society as a whole.
Pronouns are fine, they have been in use since we all started talking - but trying to force them on people, or trying to 'correct' their use, isn't right - we all have the freedom to say what we like
So peeps getting woke about inanimate objects now- is there no end to it 🙃 Andy, unless the bike itself complains, you can call "her" whatever you like mate 😊
Andy you don't have to follow the gender madness. Reality and common sense will rule and always has
I don't really give a shit on this issue but here on this side of the Atlantic it's an 'it'. I think you'd be hard pressed to find an orifice you can fuck on a motorcycle, but then English men are well-respected for their ingenuity when it comes to such issues.
What’s wrong with ‘it’ and ‘it’s’ ?
Twin analogue clocks would be the icing on the cake😊
@@caroljones3252 as an owner of the Speed, I totally agree!
@@NoFrictionZone I’ll second that, twin clocks would look so much better
And possibly a more 'traditional' looking headlamp as an option for those who prefer a slightly more retro look.
@@oliabid-price4517 yes, good call
One thing I love about bikes in the lower price categories is that they don't load them up with superfluous crap. Simplicity is appealing.
Yes I agree 100%
I have a 400x and have just come back from leading a tour in wales with it. There were k1600, 1250rt, Suzuki 1000, MT09 Ducati It was in front leading without holding the rest up , at times the throttle was to the stops, I had so much fun riding it hard ( licences loosing on my other bikes BMW 1200 GSA. And RT)
I had a ball , the only small thing on Motorway a little vibration at above 70. What’s not to like , it’s great ! I would recommend to anyone. I have been riding for 50 years training advanced and track skills , what a great fun bike 3000 miles done no problem Steve Riches Moto Road Trip. Great review of the speed 400
Triumph have played a blinder with the 2 400’s, affordable, simple, great looks and lightweight. Great review as usual.
Thank you - and I agree on the bikes!
You seemed to be genuinely enjoying that ride. Nice cheerful video- just what we need for a Saturday morning.
Great to hear thank you!
SHE looks absolutely lovely 👍
As a female rider I've had most of my friends tell me I should refer to my bike as a boy, but I've never really wrapped my head around calling a vehicle any kind of gender- feels like I'm missing out a bit, really! 😆 I think there's a world of difference between calling a machine "her" and using it as an excuse to make sexist jokes- and frankly, I think most people can recognise the difference. Never had any trouble with how people refer to their bikes, and your language has always been very respectful 🙌 thanks for the review! I'm a bit sad this didn't release a few years ago, because I think I would've LOOVED one when I first got my licence
So what did you get? ….and congratulations on getting your licence!!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Thank you! I ended up with an R3 and I really can't be happier 😊
Great review as always Andy! Bit random, but would you be able to give us your thoughts on the Kawa z650rs sometime?
When a man slips his leg over something everyday, he tends to refer to her as a shse.
I loved my bikes and named most of them. They grew their own character as I got used to them.
As always, do what pleases you and ignore negativity 😊
Looks really good, nice and simple, the way all bikes were once upon a time.
I love that the headlight looks like a dentist’s lamp - if and when you find a dentist, of course.
Fantastic bike .....after riding one my Honda XBR500 single ( with raised bars and 44hp) still felt great with a few more vibes. Honda did it 40 years ago and now Triumph have perfected it. Who needs more than 40hp on modern roads when its only 170kg ? Excellent work Triumph......an International machine in design and build.
I still like the FT500 the xbr replaced it but it was a different style of bike. Even a vt500 and a cx500 around the same time.
Good comparison, GB500tt / XBR500 are great single cyinder classics, I guess now it just depends on which to choose i.e classic or new.
@@chrishart8548 I ride a cx500 and at 50bhp it's still good enough for modern traffic, overtaking and motorways, it is heavy though and that's where the modern Triumph 400 wins, still I'll keep my classic until it gets too heavy for me.
Your a man after my own heart i also owned the little Honda and a Ducati 450 single and currently a GoldStar. There's nothing like a single.
Always loved my XBR500 for all the reasons that this bike looks a winner 👍
I'm one of the first to take delivery in the States. It's a great little bike. I've been riding since the mid 1960s and have watched motorcycles gain a bunch of weight. A modern day Bonneville is more than 100 pounds heavier than its 60s counterpart. I wanted a lightweight machine that could get out of its own way,, and the Speed 400 fills the bill perfectly. After my big and fast (and heavy) Hondas and Yamahas, it's a real breath of fresh air to ride a bike that responds instantly and predictably to your inputs. You really do feel like a better rider on this thing.
Good info.
Don’t give in to the grammar police!
This would be a good option for one's (ok my) fast approaching senior years. Lightweight, so easy on the creaking joints, cheap to own but still fun and quality enough for pride of ownership.
40 bhp from a 400 is what we got in the 70's from RD 400 & CB 400 four. Considered fast mid sized bikes.
True, but a same capacity 2 stroke will always be more powerful than a 4 stroke, & the Honda needed 4 cylinders to match the triumph's one.
And the most popular bikes to restore are. The two you have just said along with the kh400 because they still make seance today . Any advances we have made emission laws have taken away
True, although the only consideration then was power and not emissions. The big difference is efficiency. I still have a 1976 RD400 and have recently acquired a Honda CL500 scrambler (47bhp) which is 73cc bigger than RD engine and the Honda literally uses half the fuel (often 80+ mpg). You also couldn't compare longevity of the two engines (speaking just after another RD rebuild!). If today's manufacturers focused only on power output, no doubt they would far exceed that of the 70s bikes. RD is still great fun though (and that sound!), but it would never be my only bike, whereas the Honda could be if I wasn't concerned about more power (I also have a K1600gt).
Slight matter of Euro 5 compliance........!
@@clivecartey lol 😆
She's a beauty ! Cracking little bike, I've had many great memories on relatively low powered bikes in the past 👍🏻
It looks like a great little bike. Could be my 60th birthday present to myself.
I'm thinking exactly the same. Happy 60th to you 🏍🎉
I guess Triumph can thank Royal Enfield for showing them there is a market for smaller capacity bikes. Since RE got there first and didn't simply follow others they've got my money, love my 350 Meteor.
Me too, though I envy the Triumph's extra get up and go above 60mph. The Meteor has a centre stand however, lacking on the Triumph methinks, which is a swizz, tho' I suspect to do with the box of electrics hung where a centre stand would sit, as with the BSA Gold Star.
Indeed, love my Meteor...however learning to love my speed 400 as well...😎
And who are RE thanking for showing them the 650 twin market?
Was tempted by the RE Meteor but ended up with the Speed reason the lift in performance and usability more than justified the lift in price keeping it at a smidge under £5k is marketing genius.
Oh, this might just be my next bike! I have an R1200S - a great bike that I’ve had for over 12 years, but as I hit my mid 70s, it’s getting a wee bit heavy for me. Something fun, all-day comfort, lighter than my current bike, yet suitable for a tour. Sounds perfect. Might call in to my local Triumph dealer next week.
Edit: I’ve been for a run to Old Warden airfield (the Shuttleworth Collection), and the problem is, I just love the R1200S (not GS - mine is the rare sports bike that BMW only made for just over a year). I was getting over a bout of covid when I found it a real struggle to push out onto the road. Today, I managed ok. Hmmmm… think I’m keeping it a bit longer. But I’ll still try for a test ride on the Triumph 400.
Well worth a go - great to have alongside your GS!
Try the 660 Tiger Sport as well, it is a very comfy and light-feeling motorcycle, I am nearly 70 and love it! Always worry about having enough power for quick overtakes and getting out of troublesome moments. Bought mine with 900 miles on the clock, by 1200 miles it had smoothed out and the gearbox went super slick - I think the dealer thought it was a bit of a dud hence two grand off the new price and good trade-in offer.
Got one of the first ones in March , amazing little bike ,makes me smile every time i ride it. Have three other triumphs ,but this is now first choice when i go out !!
When I started riding (1971) a 400 was considered a substantial motorcycle. These days they're regarded as practical and economical little run-abouts. I both agree and disagree with that assumption. This new 400 is all real world motorcycle. Some people buy 900 pound touring bikes to bar hop and never venture more than a hundred miles from home. Those people don't know what they're missing. If they ever took a demo ride on one of the Triumphs it just might make them re-think their next purchase.
Well when a 400cc was considered a substantial motorcycle. A 1.3 car was what Normal people drove. Its very Normal to have a 2.0 car now (mine does 60mph and pays £0 ved) I have a 800cc motorcycle and it's perfect and gets 80mpg (it's a bmw)
Totally agree..i have a Tuareg 660 and is considered as a 'medium' size category....30 years ago more than 500cc was considered as a big bike. 400cc engine bike was a medium bike, not small at all.
@@williampeiper292 30 years ago most bikers would have been happy with a Suzuki Gp100 or even better a GP125 .
Hi Andy, glad you have finally got round to reviewing the 400 sport. I have owned the 400 X scrambler for several months now, equally as impressive as the sport 400. The scrambler is more suited to the taller rider as the seat hight is around 835mm. I just love the bike, so impressive and a joy to ride. Great review and thanks Andy
I bought one and it has been a great relationship. A very fun and capable little bike for riding around the city.
Hey Andy, I’ve had my Speed400 since the end of May, it’s just had it’s running in service this week and a replacement front wheel as I dented it pretty badly after smashing it through one of our lovely potholes (£500 to replace btw),
As you mentioned I’ve bought mine as a 2nd bike to use for shorter runs, a bit of commuting and just generally to have a bit of fun on, I feel it complements my Multistrada V4S perfectly.
Like you I’m struggling to find fault with it, I love riding it and the fact it sits in front of the Ducati in my garage has absolutely no bearing on how much I’ve been using it! Shout out to my dealer (Pure in Wellingborough) who have been excellent too.
If this isn’t the bike to get Mrs Flyer on I don’t know what is!!!!
Glad you're enjoying the bike and sorry to hear about that front wheel!
She is lovely she shines she runs well. She looks authentic and despite the fact that she was made in India she is a real triumph and I love her.
If people are offended by you using “she” then that’s there problem also how can it be them or them when there’s one bike
Well precisely….
Logic and reason is bigotry. It's also illegal in Germany
@@logangodofcandyAh yes, those paragons of virtue😂
SHE is a great bike. I might get one of those as a second bike.
In French "la Moto" feminine.
Just been to a Triumph dealer and sat on the 400 scrambler. I’m 6’5 and was amazed with how roomy it was. Didn’t think I would fit.
You seem to really like this bike, I can see you owning one eventually.
Fabulous bike. It just is the gift that keeps on giving when you need it too. As a fairly new rider I have found it so easy to handle and has given me so much confidence( not too much that it’s made me arrogant!). Coupled with of issues that have been sorted 1) immobiliser light now goes off and snatching at low speed control has stopped after first service. Unfortunately had to put E10 in the other day and it definitely did not like it. All sorted now. It’s not my main bike(Scrambler 900) but it’s great on a Sunday around the Peaks. I think Mrs Flyer would love it. 😉
I bought mine today and had a 68 mile ride home from the dealer. I have mobility issues but I found the bike comfortable and a lot of fun to ride, I certainly haven’t been disappointed by my decision.
What a great review Andy. I’ll echo @bikerjack2654’s comment, I too am mid 70s and find my BMW too heavy. Ok on the move but getting difficult in the lugging about dept! Will be crossing the threshold of our Triumph dealer very soon. Thanks again.
What more can I want, well a centre stand.
A cracking little bike that!!
It sure is!
I have owned one for three months now and absolutely love it. You hit the nail on the head on every aspect. Having previously owned Honda CB500F and X which were great bikes to own the Speed 400 has so much more character and more fun on the lanes of the north cotswolds where I live. Being a short bloke the weight and seat height make this perfect for me. The handling is superb especially winding up places like Fish Hill. Great review, spot on Andy.
I changed my T100 for this because of a bit of arthritis in my hip being so lite to manoeuvre about, it’s the same seat height so doesn’t feel small, goes round corners faster than the T100 and I love it for country road riding. I fitted a Dart fly screen which I think makes it look even better with a little wind protection. The only thing I would say about being not perfect is the short first gear, I don’t think it’s needed and to have a higher gear up top for cruising, but you get used to it.
One other thing I find a small problem is I keep knocking the main beam switch on when releasing the clutch lever with my glove and you get the blue indicator light on
I've owned the same black version for 3 months now and done about 1k miles on it, absolutely love it and it does indeed av 80mpg, only negative I have is the Triumph dealership, they still haven't got the extras I ordered, nothing fancy just a tank and radiator protector plsu fly screen, bike itself though is great
Annoying that isn’t it.
My triumph dealer couldn't even get me a bike.
@@dozerbladeI got one within 2 weeks luckily from my local dealer, I think they have to pre order quite a way upfront how many they want from triumph monthly. Another dealer i contacted couldn't get any until 2025.
@@slyfox186 i ordered mine with 250 quid deposit middle of March, promised delivery end of May early June, then put back to mid - late July. summer nearly over . I cancelled it. You were very lucky, although I see several new ones advertised in Auto trader up country, but I think pre registered in 23.
Finally a review who refers to this bike as more than just a “beginners bike” or “people returning back to motorcycles”. I am an Enduro guy, never had a road bike and I do want to buy one to enjoy Portugal’s beautiful weather on a weekend blast and I am seriously considering this one. Don’t want a crazy fast motorcycle with 80bhp and overly complicated. That’s the recipe for bad things to happen. This Speed 400 has the right price, styling is on point and I just need to test ride it.
I’ve had mine for a few months, I’ve put just under 2600 miles on her (it). I’m getting 72 mpg (US) on the average. I agree, it’s fun, light, perfect for my height, 5’,9” as well. One of the main reasons why I switched from my sweet little Hunter 350 was plain, more power. Comfort is about the same. She (it’s) a bit more buzzy than the Hunter. Sometimes on longer rides, my hand is numb from the vibes. I was considering the Scrambler version but I found it too tall for my liking, nice bike though. Thanks for the video and sharing your honest thoughts.
My pleasure thanks for stopping by
She’s a great little bike for the price. Caspian blue one looks better (Same colour as my old Sprint ST1050).
On numerous occasions you mentioned the word LITTLE and their's my problem i am not. I'm much taller and weigh considerably more than your good self, this bike is just too small for me. I also love a thumper and a bike with character plus I'm a sucker for twin clock's so i bought a GoldStar. Great bike.
I had looked at the GoldStar..a beautiful bike... but found out that there's still no distribution in the States. Also, it's heavy...nearly 100lbs more than the Speed 400 with only 5hp more power.. And it costs at least 30% more as well. I think that's a major issue. But you can't fault the style and quality of that machine. It's absolutely gorgeous.
The bike is so well balanced you just don't notice the weight at all.
The guy at my local dealership said this bike has a top speed of 99 mph! Very impressive! The only way my CRF 300 Rally would do that is in the back of a pick up truck.
Definitely a bike I could own as I’m only a dry weather rider. The ability to sit at 70 and the agility really appeals
Needs a bit of a screen as it gets a bit wind blast over 60.
SHE is a beauty
Although there have been other reviews on these bikes - I waited to watch yours first, so this is the first one I’ve seen.
And it’s not made in China - Nice.
Great review, i have a test ride this morning on one .
Enjoy!
Thanks for a great review. Been doing the research for a while. Test rode one today. Perfect for me. Done the fast bikes over the years. Now in late sixties with two arthritic knees just a sunny weekend rider so perfect for me. Cheap to insure and maintain as well. Money paid. Collect in a couple of days. Thanks. Ride safe.
Hello, I purchased this bike 2 month ago, just love it it's my first motorcycle. Thank you for such a promising review waiting for second part of it....... Cheers !
Looks like a hit to me. Well done Triumph.
So it looks like its top.of the pile in this category. Must say it looks great because it not overly retro...I like it. Cant imagine id ever own one...but never say never lol. Cheers for the review Mr Flyer...keep doing what you're doing!
I am super happy with this bike !
Good power from low rpm more than enough power !
Good to hear
Once you have noticed the angle of the front brake hose you'll never unsee it... bit like the clutch cable run on the Hunter. Still a nice looking bike. I rode the Scrambler version at Nathans and like you was very impressed with the motor and gearbox. Personal thing for me is the need for a centre stand and a decent front mudguard. These bikes look nice new but all seem to gain that non removable skid mark up the radiator. Thanks for the positive review enjoyed it.
Had mine for 5 weeks, done 1,200 miles. She's called, "Carmen." Lovely bike. A bit vibratey until run in. Reviewers don't oil the chain. That's my only gripe, it's difficult to get at, no centre stand, nor provision for an after market one. Still hunts a bit at low revs. Been to Portugal on an Himalayan, and a Honda 350i scooter. Hope to go again in September. The 400 will be great in the Picos as it handles so well.
@@tomellis4750 I find mine is a bit lumpy on tickover, guess its normal
quite agree, no centre stand! Triumph just pass the buck on to the owner to sort out ,chain maintenance is essential, no one ever points this out when doing a review, only thing that puts me off!! Anyone know of an aftermarket rear paddock stand to suite?
@@davidemms5176 I'm sure there is one, though not much use when touring. One allan bolt holds the back of the chain gaurd. It can be removed to make things more accessible as it can be pivoted up. Would help if the chain was the same side as the prop stand. After every ride I lube what I can get at, with a chain cleaning brush using gearbox oil, as per Fortnine. I don't have anyone to push the bike for me. The book says to lube every 200 miles, which seems a bit short.
Apart from this gripe, a wonderful motorbike, the most fun I've had on two wheels. Go well.
@@tomellis4750 Thanks Tom
@@slyfox186 TECBike parts channel on RUclips, Brand new parts Triumph 400X Speed and Scram says it's due to lean mixture to meet emission standard. They do a £180 electronic box fix, which I won't bother with. Go well.
She's a lovely bike and being English, we've always said such things. Great review. Ps the hill leading upto whiteleaf is much steeper than the video shows.
Here they is! 😂 Slight bit of sarcasm there! Ridiculous if people are offended by calling a bike 'she'. People need to get a life
Great review as always. I received my Scrambler 400 X last week and love it. Had always intended to get a 900 or 1200 scrambler, but the simplicity, light weight and really nice size of the 400 is perfect for me. Such a good experience to ride something no-frills like this, coming from a 2019 Tiger 800 XCA with every bell and whistle imaginable.
Hi Andy, I own a Carnival Red one, had it since February and covered about 1000 miles. Great second bike for around the city in and out of traffic. I'm 6 foot, and I don't find it too small. The only thing I found wrong with the bike is the very short 1st gear, apart from that it's been faultless and great fun to ride. Enjoy your channel, keep up the great content.
Glad to hear that and will do!
In certain traffic situations i.e. off the line, I'm starting on second gear, that first gear is ridiculously short.
Nicely done TMF, its a cracking looking bike.
Thanks 👍
Lots of 'budget' bikes are referred to as "More than the sum of their parts", but after taking a test ride on a Speed 400, it is exactly that, many times over. The engine feels way stronger than the claimed power, the suspension is great, the fit/finish are top notch.
And, as you said, it's SO LIGHT. It changes direction like a housefly. I was dragging pegs just scrubbing tires back and forth within my lane.
Genuinely, the only complaint I could come up with was not particularly liking the dash, but that was more to do with wishing the tach and speedo were swapped around versus actually disliking the look.
Love theses small capacity bikes, the triumph is definitely on my list to test ride, great review as always 👊
What a great looking lightweight thumper, enough power for urban riding, it's a decent price, and 80mpg isn't bad, either. I think Triumph is on to a winner!
They are indeed!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Andy, did you know that Noraly Schoenmaker (Itchy Boots) had an accident in Tanzania about a month ago? She hit a big rut on her Honda CRF300L Rally, which she calls 'Alaska', and ended up breaking her right clavicle (collarbone), and injured her right foot. The people of Tanzania were wonderful, and helped her out big time-and, you thought you had a shoulder problem!
Yes of course, in fact I was in touch with her only a few days ago....
Great test Mr Flyer.....RE must be worried I imagine.
Pet hate of mine....and being a slightly small bike it loose worse.....what is it.....the horrendous number plate size.
Straight off a 44 ton Truck.
I bought a private 5 digit number and got a fully legal size nice neat smaller plate off JDM PLATES for my 2020 Bonnie T100....so much more pleasing to the eye.
Looks like this new Triumph single is a real winner....SHE looks stunning.

I agree, she sure does!
Same thing I did it's slightly smaller then 6.5x6.5"" it's a bit pricy from JDM but couldn't find anyone else. I got mine in blue 4D crystal.
20:25 I have had a blue one for 2months now. I love it. Just like riding the local B roads. Also love my Street Triple 765, different bikes for different riding, the 400 has become my go to bike.No problems and great dealer service.Love your vlogs.
Wish this was out when I bought my Interceptor 650. Loved the Interceptor, but this seems even better, even though less HP, the lighter weight will make it about the same power to weight, but lighter weight moving around the garage. Have a Tiger 900 gt now, so no worries about it now.
Yes agreed - this is a better bike than the Interceptor I reckon.....
I rode it, didn't like it, vibrations galore, not a patch on the hunter 350 (which I owned).
Really? Not my experience at all!
come on the 350 hunter. won't keep up in the hunt its so slow

How many people have actually said you can't call a bike a she? My bet is you could count them on one hand.
Yes probably true!
Yeah Andy, at 70 years old I was looking to downsize to a light bike from the heavy Burgman 650 I've been riding these last 6 years. The Triumph 400 was at the top of my list but I ultimately went with a 2023 Kawazaki z400 solely on the basis that I have a local Kawazaki dealership here in Carson City as opposed to the more distant Triumph dealership in Reno. It was touch and go for a while, like trying to decide who to go with on Sunday's final.. Ollie Watkins or Harry Kane.. 😏
Great vid! Excellent little bike. I had a run out of a friends who bought it to compliment his T120 and I had a blast. Comfy seat and bar position, energetic engine and as you said, really agile and light.
At 6ft, I’d like to try the Scrambler but I’ve seriously been considering one as a second bike.
Nice one, both film and bike. She looks so good. What about service? Valves etc.
There's a Royal Enfield 450 Guerilla on the way. Looks alot like this.
Cheers!
I'm sure RE will soon use the new 450 Himalayan engine in a road bike. I'd still rather have a Triumph.😊
A great bike no doubt but to keep comparing it to the Classic 350 you are missing the point of the Classic 350 completely.
Nice. I owned a BMW 310 in 2018 and really enjoyed it. This looks like a wonderful update to the lightweight modern single cylinder category. Nice work Triumph.
The Triumph is also a ideal quality bike for those of us of more advanced years ,who still love riding motorcycles but have an existing bike that has become a little to heavy to manoeuvre safely or pick up should we drop it.
They really !! Anyway lovely bike really like this bike I’m glad you reviewed her lol 👍
Pleased to hear that!
She is awesome, anyone that doesn't think she is, "They" can fudge off! Cheers
Amazing. I haven’t seen a bad review for this bike yet, and ive watched a lot of reviews. Im thinking of getting a 2nd bike and this one is on my list. You mention the duke 390 which is also on my list so i will have a look for your video on that bike.
Great video. Here in the states the hunters going for 5000 all in and the triumph 7000 all in. I went with a hunter and really like it. 😊
Well! She looks lovely! 😂
On the subject of using the pronoun 'she' (1:12) when referring to an inanimate object-a motorcycle-as somehow being sexist? 'Usernamekate' has named all her bikes, and I think she has always used a male name, if I'm not mistaken. She called her Triumph Street Triple 765RS, "Donald". 'Itchy Boots' (Noraly), also likes to give her bike a name. 'Basanti' was a female heroine, 'Dhanno' was a female horse, and both these names were inspired and taken from the famous 1975 Bollywood (Indian Hindi) action-adventure film, 'Sholay'. Noraly: "I bought Savannah, a Honda CRF250L. I chose [sic] this bike for being light, reliable, and because she was the most affordable..." Many people, male and female, like to give their vehicle a name.
It was just my attempt at humour - clearly it backfired as many people thought I was being serious.
I'd buy this over any Royal Enfield Scram, Bullet, Meteor and Interceptor because this has so much more power to enter/exit junctions easily, keeps up with traffic on the motorway and feel much safer knowing that you have a bit more power to get out of certain situations. That's not to say I don't like the Royal Enfield's looks, I love them, but the engines are way under powered for my liking
I've owned one since they landed in Australia a few month ago. I have over 6000kms on the clock so far. Loving the bike for all the reasons discussed in the video. The only quibble... a warranty issue with a very innacurate fuel range read out. It reads at least 100kms more than what it should. Discovering this was not fun. Riding down a motorway with one bar and the reading saying 90kms left and then suddenly No bars... and the range went blank! Scary. I got to a petrol station asap. The tank took 12.2ltrs. So 0.8ltrs remaining. Apparently there is a software fix available in India but it hasn't reached Australia yet.
That's interesting - wonder if anyone else reading this has had the same?
It's a mode of transportation. You can call it "he" or "she" and if someone gets offended by your choice of words, well then it is a shame that that is what they choose to focus on. Personally, my car is a "he" because he feels more like a buddy to me.
Nice one - though in general I think of all vehicles from bikes to ships, as “she”….
Hear! Hear!
My first car was a 1997 Opel Barina 1.2L.
I used to call it Barry and referred to the car as a Bloke all the time just because its funny and stupid.
Barry the Blue Barina. 😅 Oh such a brilliantly terrible car it was.
Excellent review as always. I am in the market for one of these or the scram 411. Do you mind if I ask, which you would go for? Thank you
Totally agree, call the bike what you want, as a pile of metal and plastic it can’t be offended itself. My bikes are called Derek and Horace, I’ve never heard them complain once!!!
Hey TMF! Great looking bike. Love it. And ignore the pronoun Nazis. You keep on doing your thing. It's what makes you you and no-one else needs to judge. They can always watch another channel.
Our bikes can identify however they like.
PS did you try the Fantic Caballero 500? Was it a good competitor to the Triumph?
PPS what about the differences with this and the Scrambler version? Worth the money?
Thank you for this review. I've owned a few sub 250cc dirt bikes and scooters over the years but finally bit the bullet and sat my license with the intention of buying a real bike and getting on the road earlier this year. I had been saving for one of these before succumbing to my eagerness to get on the road and buying a 5 yo MT03 instead. I can see why the MT03 is a popular first bike but I already have a bit of buyers remorse. Part of my falling out of love with the Speed 400 is a couple of stylistic things that bugged me - mainly every part that is matt silver (guards, handlebar, gauge bezel) and the two tone tank paint - but this review reminds me I need to get myself on one for a test ride. I'm back to saving and now am weighing up the Triumph Speed 400 against the new CF Moto 450 CL-C. Would love to see someone compare these.
I really enjoyed this review. I haven’t had a bike for 15 years and I’m considering this bike to get me back in the saddle. Previous bike Suzuki Bandit 600. Test ride coming !
Enjoy!
Yea you will definitely piss more people off calling a Bike "They" than "She".. Including me!
How many bikes are we talking about if it's they.
It's now 'they' in the Grauniad. On occasion it turns my stomach, but one can only laugh. Fortunately there are so many other orthographical infelicities in the Graun I have developed endurance. But my bike is definitely a she, and she would be deeply offended if grammatically spayed. Very glad to see that our Flyer has abandoned that nonsense!
It was just my attempt at humour - clearly it backfired as many people thought I was being serious.
She is lovely in black
She sure is!
Nice to hear an unbiased review instead of Stuart Fillinghams typical RE gush. These Triumphs are a definite step up in quality and performance when compared to the Royal Enfields.
I've done over 3,000 miles on my black Speed 400 including a trip to central France, The ABR Festival and just recently the Lightweight Adventure Festival this week in which I took my Lone Rider Moto tent, along the other camping equipment is Rhinowalk panniers and Triumph top box. It's handled all these with consummate ease and that brilliant engine make this bike a joy to ride.
Good to hear!
Andy, I come here to get a break from the woke politics being forced down our throats. Please speak as you always have.
Here, here❤
It was just my attempt at some humour - seems it backfired somewhat....
Great review of a great little bike. He or she is fine because I'm normal. Leave the they and them to the idiots.
I enjoy your channel and reviews. I appreciate your try at being inclusive. I'd like to advocate for "it". First, as a moto journalist or reviewer, it's not offensive to anyone. Second, they don't have gender. It's not a boy or a girl or another form of identity. Bikes don't have feelings. They aren't sentient. It's a machine. Finally, it is a description you already use so consciously making that adjustment will likely prove easier.
Oh and the bike was cool too. 😂

What a great little bike. i took an impromptu test ride a few weeks ago. The Speed 400 reminded me of a more powerful and better handing version of the CB250RS I used for years as a commuter in the late 80's while keeping other bikes for best. What a hoot the small Triumph is, I had to remember a whole different way of riding, keeping the momentum going and then throttling on for more fun. Needless to say my order is in and I am waiting confirmation of a PDI date. Cant wait for the grin factor to come back to commuting. :) Good to see an experienced rider having fun on a lower powered bike. Thanks for the review you reaffirmed my thoughts on the Speed 400. Cheers
Thanks for watching!
Andy, refer to bikes any way you please. Woke has no place on your channel. My bikes, incidentally, have tended to be male (as am I). The only offence I take is people focussing on trivia and their own agendas. Oh, and great review! Cheers, Ian
Cheers Ian!
@@TheMissendenFlyer My pleasure, Andy.
Funny how the word "woke" underwent the same treatment as "they" is😂. The lesson here is to not pile extra responsibilities on top of one word; if the language has new job openings, invent new words to do them, don't overload existing words.
You're kidding? Tell those pronoun abusers to ignore oh, I dunno, say, 3000 years of nautical history just to start with....
I really like the Triumph Speed 400. If I had a local Triumph dealer, one of these would be sharing the garage with my R1250 GSA!
I saw the 400 at a reveal event at a local dealer in Thailand. It is very impressive! The gold forks and Triumph logo on the tank are sharp! It is priced around the new 350 Royal Enfield but considerably more powerful and modern.
