I remember watching a live video of Noel singing this in Argentina, and like many of the fans of the years, he actually started crying on stage while singing it. The perfect song. Strong lyrics, great structure, a solid beat, well sung and written in such a way that those of us who couldn't carry a tune in a bucket can bellow along to it. All you need is the beer!

Oasis were on top of the world because of their brilliant combination of a couple of key factors: idiosyncratic/unmistakable vocals, huge arena rock vibes, and a fundamentally Beatles-esque sense of songwriting. People accuse them of ripping off the Beatles but that's entirely unfair; they clearly understood how the Beatles wrote music and wrote a lot of their own in the same vein but with their own quirks and sound.
Can't believe you guys have managed to avoid "Wonderwall" thus far; you couldn't turn on the radio back in the 90s without hearing that song. My personal favorite is "The Importance of Being Idle," though, so maybe check that out next. Edit: Pachelbel's Canon in D, not Beethoven...
Mint Oreos is an absolutely perfect example for Oasis, given that they are from Manchester. The reason is that using the word "mint" to descibe something good is a very Mancunian phrase.
Hi guys, Lex you're right, the chord sequence is a take on Pachelbel's Canon in D. Lots of music is based on the sequence, 'Altogether now' by the Farm for example. Why, because it works and stimulates both sides of your musical brain at the same time. Love and peace from the UK.
@@Besaid06 Nice catch. I didn't realise that song was largely lifted from Neil Innes' (The Rutles) original recording. Which, itself is a clear example of Pachelbel - Canon In D Major influence, in the chorus, at least.
I was at University in Manchester when I came across Oasis. They are one of the music influences of my youth. I absolutely love this song, don't know why and that's what music should be like.
Oasis is my childhood growing up, defo a rabbit hole for you to go down....plus I literally said outside in shock he hasn't paused it yet, what's going on 😂
One of the greatest bands of all time. And Noel has one of the all time guitar tones. Basically make it super loud and control it in the mix. I love it.
Wow, I absolutely agree, Lex does have a keen ear - I had to go back & listen to it again to hear it. And as I've said somewhere in another comment, you also have a very good voice, you really should consider exploring your musical abilities, Lex! Back to Oasis, all I can hear is the Beatles influence, and there again, your definition is spot on; Oasis took the Beatles sound and made it their own flavour.
Yeah Lex it's got the exact same chord progression as Bob Marley's no woman no cry cause the first band I played in used to run this song straight into no woman no cry, funny story, Very first gig I ever played in a band as a drummer we played this song, had a female singer who said "next song is an Oasis song" then some drunk dude in the audience shouted "Wonderwall" an Oasis song we didn't know, our singer didn't miss a beat she said right back at him "don't look back ya Wanker" as we kicked off the song. Best comedy burn moment I've ever witnessed and the whole bar erupted with laughter and applause.
You don't have to be an Oasis fan to salute their greatness. They were the soundtrack of 1994-5. Perhaps because I'm a contrary git, my favourite track is She's Electric.
yes you do have to be a fan. any one who has good taste in music know they suck. and this was the only good album they produced. they spent 7 million in a recording studio and it was the worst thing any one ever heard.

I never got into Oasis as a big fan, but they did release a lot of good music. Their live shows (only watched here and there on video) looked pretty amazing too. One of the biggest strong points in their music is that just about all of their songs were great songs to play live.
Just a great live band. Saw them late 90s in Barrie Ontario with Neil Young. Arrogant cocky combative with the crowd lol they were awesome. Dudes brought the heat that nite. Go see them again in a minute. Gotta see them live they were impressive.
Yes! Canon in D, I totally hear that. I don't like all the words to this song (I love the "Don't look back in anger" part).. but I absolutely love the music for it. Another great song is "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" if you haven't heard it. Makes me cry. The video for it is thoughtful. Edit: You might check out the Coldplay cover of Don't Look Back in Anger... it's live at a concert supporting Ariana Grande after her Manchester concert had a violent attack (not sure if youtube will let me write teh word for what happened).. but i really love the vibe of the cover and the way the whole massive crowd is singing along.
Great observation. Oasis are massive fans of The Beetles and have been heavily and openly inspired by them. A lot of The Beetles sound has been filtered right through music for 50 years now so has a "classic" sound, they themselves were inspired by classical music. Oasis were huge, really huge here in Britain, if they reformed.. man.... They'd conquer the country instantly. :)
I was a huge Oasis fan in the 90's after I listened to What's the story Morning Glory, then I went back and checked out their older catalog. The 2 brothers Liam and Noel used to actually get into fights onstage, brothers will be brothers.
I had to listen to Pachelbel's Canon in D to fully understand, and yes I started singing the chorus to Don't look back in anger. It fits, and I never realized how much their production was so classical until you pointed it out. Thank you😀
There is a great live performance of this by Noel Gallagher at River Plate where the audience sings the song word for word after Noel invites them to sing the chorus.
Nevermind the classical influences, I think it actually makes a lot of sense to call Oasis a "remake" within the context of pop rock too. They were HEAVILY compared to the Beatles when they came out, sometimes even to a critical degree. So calling them a remake in that sense actually kind of works.

That made me laugh.
what does 'mint' mean in manchester?
And for an Oasis song that blows the roof off, "Columbia"
Hi guys, Lex you're right, the chord sequence is a take on Pachelbel's Canon in D. Lots of music is based on the sequence, 'Altogether now' by the Farm for example. Why, because it works and stimulates both sides of your musical brain at the same time. Love and peace from the UK.
That about sums it up. That's one reason why you can anticipate chord changes in most popular (western) music. It's popular for that reason.
interesting
One of the greatest anthems of all time. A classic.
'Oasis - Whatever' is probably the clearest example of Pachelbel - Canon In D Major influence in Oasis' catalogue.
Haha...actually Noel lifted it from Monty Python's "How Sweet to be an Idiot".
@@Besaid06 Nice catch. I didn't realise that song was largely lifted from Neil Innes' (The Rutles) original recording. Which, itself is a clear example of Pachelbel - Canon In D Major influence, in the chorus, at least.
Your faces did not appreciate that drum solo drop. Gives me chills every time 😂👌
I was at University in Manchester when I came across Oasis. They are one of the music influences of my youth. I absolutely love this song, don't know why and that's what music should be like.
The use of orchestral instruments probably more of a Beatles influence
It's from John Lennons imagine. Noel said so himself is where he got the beginning from.
Oasis is my childhood growing up, defo a rabbit hole for you to go down....plus I literally said outside in shock he hasn't paused it yet, what's going on 😂
This takes me back, working in Germany. All I can remember are great times and great people, Seven years of bliss
piano at the beginning of the song is inspired by john lennon's imagine
This song always relaxes me. It's perfect.
One of my all time favorite bands from the 90s. Seen them live multiple times (front row) and each time had a blast. Thanks for the reaction!!
One of the greatest bands of all time. And Noel has one of the all time guitar tones. Basically make it super loud and control it in the mix. I love it.
Trust me, no one involved in this thing has a degree! Just magic in the soul.
This is my favorite Oasis song.
From UK and never met anyone who dislikes Oasis's music even my kids who are in their teens occasionally play some Oasis on their amazon alexas
So much of the Beatles in this song you could of tucked away in the middle of the Abbey Road album with ease.
Lex, always the voice of reason.
First 3 albums from this band is pure rock n roll excellence. 90s were banging
Iconic. Love love love
Yep it's Pachelbel's Cannon. You should see the video of Oasis playing in Argentina where this massive crowd sings along. Amazing.
More specifically it's John Lennons imagine at the start, from piano to guitar.
"Whats understood, dont need to explained" - Ancient YTBC Proverb. Spot on analysis Queen. Excellent Song...Shoutout to yall...Peace!!!
the memories I have as a kid hearings oasis growing up in the UK was the best year's by far!
Could play this anywhere in the UK and a crowd will gather and sing it, live versions are incredible
This song is like Manchester’s anthem, it was sung everywhere after the Arena bombing in 2017.
Their first 2 Albums are pure class, pure pure class. 👍🇬🇧
Totally. The rest of them.....zzzzzzzzzz.
Brad and Lex are ready for the most British song ever.
Evidently Chickentown- John Cooper Clarke
'Filling is different but the framework is the same'......couldn't have said it any better. Compliment to them and the inspiration. Well said.....
Oasis - Don't go away
You don't have to be an Oasis fan to salute their greatness. They were the soundtrack of 1994-5.
Perhaps because I'm a contrary git, my favourite track is She's Electric.
yes you do have to be a fan.
any one who has good taste in music know they suck.
and this was the only good album they produced.
they spent 7 million in a recording studio and it was the worst thing any one ever heard.
@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 what you talking about they have 3 masterpiece albums which highly sold and are critically acclaimed definately maybe, what's the story and the masterplan are amazing albums be here now remastered without the overproduction is also superb
@@bt9762 crap.
@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 Go on then. You must have amazing taste in music so what is your favourite band?
@@jackthehat1093 Zappa!
I had a fraternity brother who was OBSESSED with this band at their height of popularity. Lex, you’re right about how their fans felt. (Not sure how he felt about Mint Oreos though).
Musical perfection
Absolutely an amazing song!
The Beatles of our Generation. Im from the UK and can assure you this is a Anthem over here
I never got into Oasis as a big fan, but they did release a lot of good music. Their live shows (only watched here and there on video) looked pretty amazing too. One of the biggest strong points in their music is that just about all of their songs were great songs to play live.
Oasis live is amazing! So sad I never got to see them live. At least I can see their solo acts.
This would make the soundtrack of my childhood, singing this with my buddies at parties, good times.
Modern classic - great live audience participation song that gets everyone singing along and swaying to the beat.
You've got it.Oasis are the Mint Oreos of pop.
You should check out Supergrass and Blur, and Paul Whellers Changingman, from same time frame of mid 90s. It was known as Britpop
Just a great live band. Saw them late 90s in Barrie Ontario with Neil Young. Arrogant cocky combative with the crowd lol they were awesome. Dudes brought the heat that nite. Go see them again in a minute. Gotta see them live they were impressive.
So many times had this as the end of the night song in a club, everyone drunk singing.
Holy shit. This reminded of One Life by The Pillows. They're a Japanese band. I definitely hear the Oasis influence now.
The Pillows rock hard
Definitely some Beatles and Mott the Hoople influences
Oasis was a great band
The soloing all through- out the song is just smooth.
This was a classic as soon as it was released. So happy to see you experience this song for the first time 😊
Oasis weren't a band for lyricists to enjoy. Noel was happy to find a rhyme.
@@srodgers66 though "please don't put your life in the hands of a rock n roll band /who'll throw it all away" was a particulaly inspired lyric
The Beatles...
Thank you😀
To me this song is about not looking back at things in anger
There is a great live performance of this by Noel Gallagher at River Plate where the audience sings the song word for word after Noel invites them to sing the chorus.
Weird that I am finally getting into Oasis 25 years later. Live at Knebworth 96 is one of the best live albums I have ever heard.
"It's definitely not plain Oreo's" is one of the funniest things I've ever heard in trying to explain why something is excellent and for the ages.
Nevermind the classical influences, I think it actually makes a lot of sense to call Oasis a "remake" within the context of pop rock too. They were HEAVILY compared to the Beatles when they came out, sometimes even to a critical degree. So calling them a remake in that sense actually kind of works.
Fantastic song & Band
For awhile there they were the biggest band in the world
