Yes, you do build a high quality product! Love your videos. I have learned a lot watching them. But really I just find it relaxing to watch and learn from folks that obviously take pride in their craft! Thank you.
Luv the quality, and aiming as high as is possible. I'm getting so many great ideas from Dr. Deck! I am retired from a punching a clock, and starting my own handyman business. 63 and still spunky, Thanks Man!
Beautiful deck amazing work. We really appreciate your input on addressing the details. I believe the post notch at 9:58 needs a bit of clearance to allow for contraction. That small piece will brake. Call back!
I don’t live in OR, and have never hired, worked with or for, and can’t personally testify to Dr. Decks workmanship. Despite all that, this guy really appears to have a level of integrity that isn’t as common as it should be.
Do you run your composite decking straight into the patio door, or do you leave a little gap between deck and door for water purposes? Thanks Dr Decks!
Thank you for all your posts. I was stumped trying to replace my wood porch decking with composite, until I watched your videos. I was doing picture frame joints, but will now I want to use your technique for gluing trim pieces to the end of the boards. You said a fewer sent you a drawing for a rig to safely cut the trim pieces. Will you share that with me? Gary
Thank you for the videos. I'm building a deck with Fiberon Goodlife and I want the decking on the stairs and the rim to go over the 3/4" fascia just a little but was wondering if this will work okay. The Goodlife product has three large scallops which means one of the scalloped areas would need to sit on the PVC trim board. Will this work okay? I'd love to see a video on this. No one that I have seen has addressed this very well.
Great videos, Dr. Decks, always helpful and informative for us DIYers. I plan to expand my existing 8 x 28 rear deck to 16 x 28. I intend to use picture framing and a breaker board down the middle to avoid splices. I plan to use Timber Teck Prime Sea salt grey which is a scalloped bottom. I'm confused about 2 items: 1. Adding fascia under a 3/4" deck board overhang or flush mount to top of deck boards with NO overhang. Which do you recommend. 2. this is related to item 1. If I install a breaker board all the way to the edge of the deck (with a 1/2" overhang and fascia installed under the edge deck board), the deck material will show and not have a finished look. (Especially with a scalloped bottom board.) Should I plan to have a splice at the breaker board location and run the breaker beard before the picture frame. FYI, i won't have this problem since the other end of the breaker board abuts to the house and won't be visible. I much appreciate your help on this.
Hey Dr. Decks, great channel full of useful insights! When you build a waterproof deck using EPDM pond liner, do you also wrap the furthest (outside) joist in rubber before you install the Timbertech fascia? Or, do you count on moisture/water dripping through between the last joist and the fascia? If you do not waterproof a deck, do you put EPDM between the last joist and the fascia?
Great info!! Love the picture deck without the 90 degree angle which make me feel inadeguate. Will make mine like that. One tip though, the fast motion is cool but made me sick to my stomach, not cool 😂
Hey Jason, I hope you do well at NADRA this month. We are so busy with our deck bracket premanufacture I'm not planning on attending. My son remembers seeing you in Vegas last November, but once again it was a quick trip. If I get to NADRA it will be last minute. So good luck. Tom W
How to lay deck boards at 45 degrees when multiple pieces are needed to cover the length? Do you have to cut them at 45 degrees in order to screw it to the joists also can fasteners be used somehow?
Your an artist man, it does get confusing sizing a deck for no seams or ripping down boards, im building one now, ive probably measured this frame a few thousand times lol
I love it!! Hubs and I working on a diy 9x9 ground level deck just for looks. Not much use. So that said, it’ll be by all means a diy finish and that’s just fine enough for me. Not special ordering anything so working with what’s available at the blue and orange box stores. Which are sneaky at not selling everything you need. Starting boards in a 8 feet but matching groove planks in 12 feet. But we making it work and might put in a center board to buy 8 footer instead of 12 (inside the pic frame)or can put 2 boards to pic frame it. Also using the groove boards as starting boards since our deck is ground level with 2 sides covered by walls , one side continues on to out entrance floor (concrete) and the one visible, I’ll cover with rock or something. I do know my deck will outlast my frame (treated wood with ground contact) and I’m fine with that, as I love to change things anyway. But I do love your professional work. Looks so good!
Thanks Dr! I have a question, when you use the track saw to trim the boards for your border or inlays, do you set it with a slight angle or is it at 90?
Jason, most people use a 45-degree corner on the deck border to hide the cuts. How to you treat the exposed (cut) board edge on your herringbone corners?
Hi Jason, I'm a frustrated deck build customer. I've moved off my original contractor who messed up on laying down my Trex boards and finishing on a step assembly. At the 2:00:00 mark you mentioned that you had to rip a board more narrow due to the house design. My contractor ripped a board at the most visable threshold onto the deck from our porch. The raw "core" material shows (light beige) and contrasts badly with the medium gray Trex board along the board seam. Have you ever run a radiused router (1/8" or 1/4") along the ripped edge of the board and then painted (color matched) the radiused edge ? Or would it be better to just leave the ripped edge as a "rectified 90% edge" and still use touch up paint along the edge? The contractor used hidden fasteners. Thanks for any help ! Don
I use a 1/8" round off bit to ease the edge. Any more and you'll just expose more of the core composite, which, can be touched up with some color match paint. Either way, the PVC cap (or UV stabilized polyurethane, depending on the product), has been compromised. Exposing the entire length of a composite board to the elements will shorten it's life span, as any of the organic material in the make up of the composite will be susceptible to decay, moss, etc.
As the Marketing & Communications manager for a new and upcoming contracting company, VTP Contracting Group Inc, I love your social media presence, how you deliver your content, & how well you and your team seamlessly work together...keep up the great work, media team, and oh yeah, the decks are pretty cool, too ;) #ITurnWoodIntoStuff
Thank you for the amazing work you guys do. will you be able to show the proper way layout /measure /cut the board that cut through the deck and creating those sections?
Love your work some simple questions? With your saw blades what is the tpi that you normally use and how to you clean the blades because I noticed a lot of plastic build up on my blade after doing a lot of cuts. Cheers.
Jason, you were showing me the deck board pneumatic nailers at the FastenMaster booth in Vegas, yet you're still using Cortex in this video. So which one do you use more?
I can answer this because he told us in Vegas. He uses "Real-time Landscape software for more complex decks or the free software from Simpson Fasteners for more easy designs.
Two smaller rips on the design would have given you that board back and standing off of it would look like an optical illusion. And the flaw is not laid out in the upper middle of the floor. It's looks great and I imagine you and the owner decided which would look better just another option.
I have watched U for a very long time. and I have been wondering if U would be amenable to allowing me to come up and work for U, for a month, free labor, to get a feel of how Ur working flow really works, along with being able to see the tools being used, in action, in addition to getting a feel for Ur actual working stratagem and concepts. I do many deck repairs, and builds. but nothing of Ur close to Ur caliber. I will continue to watch Ur videos to learn more. My customers are considerably happier since I have adapted many of Ur applications. I do appreciate Ur tutelage and always look forward to all next videos. Ur craftsmanship is at another level. Thank U 4 raking the time to enlighten us all.
Sorry, that’s a no, We don’t do free training. There are some things we just don’t share with everyone . That’s why we are DrDecks😊. But thank you, keep up the good work, do you!
I have ideas about doing this without ever cutting the tape.. because, if you cut the tape- what tf put the tape on in the first place?? This part of the process drives me crazy each time, I will try out my new idea on next deck and report back on how it worked!
Only 18% 'cmon fellas, help em out. Great info. Im heading out to add fasteners to clients deck where they rusted out. There is also a breaker board in the center and ot shows no fasteners. 🤔 The planks on one dide of the breaker board are lower than the other side. I saw the deck after it was installed and i recall it was nice and even then.... 10+ years ago. I think they may have installed screws from the underside somehow. The deck is low, so no way to view the under side to see what caused this unevenness. Im going to use some magnets from the top side to locate fasteners then see if i might pry the board loose, fix the problem, the screw back from the top. I dont know if this is Trex, Timber tec or something else.
I just cant get over you paying 140 bucks for each deck joist, you material cost is insanely high, your voice is nasaly and higher pitched, and it appears you really love to hear yourself talk... I know you said you work for high end customers, WOW THATS GREAT, the reason you don't have as many subs as you like, is because you come off as having an elitest attitude. Try and remember, your not a brain surgeon, your a doctor who builds decks, where do I sign up to get the most expensive decking materials in the world, your videos are great, ive been a carpenter for 40 years, I build additions, garages etc, but nothing as difficult as a deck , thank you for showing us all the right way to build things
Your always going to have a rip, you should always put it against the house. The board dimensions/spacing/squareness etc. will never be perfect/even/uniform.
Great content, but the editing makes this visually impossible to watch - all the choppiness in the cuts, and literally cutting to the beat of the music makes this visually unwatchable. Please have your cameraman hold the camera steady and please tell your editor not to splice out microseconds of footage. I honestly had to turn my laptop away and just listened to the content because the editing was so choppy.
Your cameraman forgets to show the work, we enjoy your face and beauty but show more of the decks please!!! 🤣
Thanks for saying what I was going to say Baba! 👍🏾
Yes, you do build a high quality product! Love your videos. I have learned a lot watching them. But really I just find it relaxing to watch and learn from folks that obviously take pride in their craft! Thank you.
Subscriber who loves all your videos. Not a deck builder but interested in the details of how (almost) everything works.

I don’t live in OR, and have never hired, worked with or for, and can’t personally testify to Dr. Decks workmanship.
Despite all that, this guy really appears to have a level of integrity that isn’t as common as it should be.
I like the way you guys did the flooring on the deck

Your detail explanation helps tremendously
Beautiful work Man! I learn something new every video. Borders make all the difference in finish

Awesome use of composite/polymer boards. Gave me some inspiration for fixing my porch.
Ok , I subbed.very Informative , I’d like to see more of the work you do.

My question exactly. Looks like they were going to glue thin end pieces on. No bueno but the rest of the job looks great
Why have the outside edge on the two boards that go around the perimeter? Seems like the other boards would keep running past the joint
Great work guys!
what do you to to that exposed cut end hanging off the end of the deck on the breaker board?
Hi Jason, I'm a frustrated deck build customer. I've moved off my original contractor who messed up on laying down my Trex boards and finishing on a step assembly. You obviously don’t live in a place where fall protection over 6’ elevation isn’t required.
DOCTOR..... WHEN YOU MAKE A CUT DO YOU HAVE TO PAINT THE BOARD AFTER YOU CUT IT ?
Dr. Decks, question: I noticed in this deck build video you did not miter any corners. You kept them square. Could you please explain. Thanks
what are the support stands for the the miter saw?
so is the facia flush with the top of the deck or does the decking overhang an inch or so? is this just preference?
Love your work some simple questions? With your saw blades what is the tpi that you normally use and how to you clean the blades because I noticed a lot of plastic build up on my blade after doing a lot of cuts. Cheers.
When you install borders and the centerpiece, don’t you need more support underneath?
Yes
Nah. Just kinda float it. It’ll be fine. 😂
please have camera show the deck details and less focus on you
Do you have a Fascia installation video or short.
Great stuff from a professional builder
Curious, what is an average price per square ft. on the Labor?
Jason, you were showing me the deck board pneumatic nailers at the FastenMaster booth in Vegas, yet you're still using Cortex in this video. So which one do you use more?
did it for treated 5/4 flooring and it looks awesome as well. I even chamfered the ends of every board and it looks professional AF.
thanks
Do you use any software or tools to help design/layout so you have something to work from when building?
I can answer this because he told us in Vegas. He uses "Real-time Landscape software for more complex decks or the free software from Simpson Fasteners for more easy designs.
What brand of boots do you wear?

I wish Azek was $6-$7 per ft in NY, close to $11-$12 here 😔
Close to 60$ here so shut up
$6-$7 per foot is his discounted price I'm guessing
We'll you should leave NY
@@Beholderoffate Nah
Meticulous attention to detail. Very nice work.

Okay, the drilling on point with the beats tho.. your editor is doing too much. 🙌
You need the Eliminate ft DrDecks mashup now

When you’re taping…
More deck and less doctor.
It’s easier to visualize the design and execution of the build if you show the deck.

Calling yourself "doctor" just because you're a skilled carpenter is a form of stolen valor because you haven't earned that title. I'm outta here...
To much “me” and too little “pics”.
How do you trim the boards against the house with the track saw?
Can we see the deck installed of you talking?
