All these little towns are what America is, and its history. Unlike anywhere else. You are right when you hear some state is boring. Its all in the eye of the beholder. Wavey says every town has its own smells. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

It just seems to get better I see a Emmy for best Shanty Documentory, that should be a category. Everyone should be forced to slow down and see the best that this world has to offer and get off the interstates and on the back roads.
I spent years riding motorcycles and would avoid the main roads and meet the most amazing people and see the beauty that the Lord made for us. I spent years on the ocean and every day was a blessing. Thank you for sharing this with so many others. God bless my you my Brother looking forward for more. Mack in SC

See, this is exactly why I enjoy watching these videos.
Seems like so many videos are about showing people at their worst. Too much drama!!
People fighting at Walmart, or getting into fisticuffs over ridiculous things like shopping carts at the grocery store??
    Nahhhh...not for me.
I too like it simple and I love how there's so much history to enjoy and how beautiful this world really is!
It's all about what you're looking for.
You want drama and violence? Yep it's there.
But so is peace and quiet and kindness. It's there too.
It's all about what you're looking for.
Great video Brenton. I'd love doing a trip like this! Enjoy!

You really missed the best part of McGregor. You would have needed to unload the scooter and ride up the main drag until you saw signs for Pikes Peak State Park and the burial mounds at the National Monument( I forget the name). They are some of the absolute finest burial Mounds in the US. The view downriver from the top of the bluffs is a killer view. The river makes a gradual bend eastward giving you a fantastic view of the bluffs coming right down to the river.

Hi Brenton and Wavey! Well, the voyage downstream just gets better and better! You could not have timed the changing of the leaf colors any better than what you've done. I get the sense that you've found your perfect element here, being on the Upper Miss. I see you caught a brief glimpse of one of our USCG river tenders entering the lock. That was most likely the CGC Wyaconda, homeported out of Dubuque, IA. Dubuque is interesting in that it has an "ice harbor", from which river flow is cut off from the ice harbor when the gates to it are closed at ice-in at the coming of winter. That tug boat within the lock: On the US western rivers (ie, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio and any other navigable river that empties into the Mississippi), these beasts are called "towboats"........ even though all they do is "push" their barges filled with commerce! Another Mighty Miss tidbit is as you are going downstream, the river bank to your right is known as "The Right Descending Bank". If you monitor Channel 14 enough, you've probably heard the pilots of these towboat maybe mentioning "right descending bank" . I guess it's all about piloting in the current.......the towboat coming "upstream" has a distinct maneuverability advantage compared to a towboat going downstream with the current on it's stern. Often in a tight channel or bend in the river, meeting towboats will most often have the upstream towboat be the "give way" vessel to allow the downstream boat full use of the channel or bend in question! Looking forward to the next video, thanks for having everyone come along on your dream voyage of a lifetime!

Between malls, and the jobs of those communities now offshore, they struggle to survive. Sad commentary on our American way of life. Correct me if I am wrong here. You can crank of deep cycle batteries, so you could hook up the outboard to the two in parallel, that way when you are running the motor it will charge them? Or even have an A/B switch and crank off the starter battery then switch to the deep cycle to charge them while moving? Lithium batteries are crazy expensive too, might consider adding two more lead acid in parallel and add two more solar panels.

    • @backwatersandbackroads

Very nice! That first town you stopped in looked like a time capsule from the 19th century. I love stuff like that. And how those Tugboat captains maneuver those huge barges into those locks is amazing. And oh, I'm very impressed with the stamina you have when you're working out, 3 hours of push-ups is amazing.😉

Both sides of the river have busy mainline train tracks... BNSF on the east (Chicago to Seattle) and Canadian Pacific on the west.

Really awesome content, so enjoyable. I wonder if you install a marine grade wind turbine, it would help keep the batteries charged up on cloudy days. Several offerings on Amazon. We have the Automaxx Windmill Turbine mounted on our Corsair 880 Sport Trimaran. It actually does a better job of keeping our 4 Battle Born batteries charged than our solar panels, It's rated at 1500W 24V 60Amps....

I've thought about it. One issue: I live on a spot on the Ontonagon river above a train trestle that the barge literally fits under by inches. It would have to fold down. I can't even realt add a roof rack for my kayak on the roof unless it's level with the peak of the roof. That trestle is the bane of the river I tell you ,)

@@backwatersandbackroads maybe for the rest of this trip one would benefit you.... you could actually mount it on the stern down by your scooter. You're always moving forward so the turbine will be generating power most of the day...

Sweet footage of the old towns . I visited a distant relative in Iowa when I was a teenager , turns out he was a good friend of Jimmy Carter ... how cool eh ? We found a street called ( No Name Street ) in a country road town , with maybe 15 houses tops . I guess it was getting tough to find a name for the new street . We got gas at a country road " gas station / ice cream shop " turns out the employee ( around 20 years old ) had never been to a city . We were only about an hour away from Cedar Rapids , that's just nuts . I met the girl of my dreams there , never to be seen again after our 1 week stay . Next farms daughter . She drove her dads old pickup on their farm property , My first time on a horse ( called Rocket , because he had a tendency of taking off like a bullet ) . There was a real nice pond with a huge tree and a old tire swing . Good memories man .

Hi! I found your channel a couple weeks ago while researching The Great Loop. I really identified with your style, particularly after watching your video from 4 years ago about "Reluctant Loners". I've been trying to find a manufacturer of houseboats who use an aluminum barge as a platform but I'm unable to find one. Do you have any suggestions? This setup you have looks ideal for the rivers because it's tough, is easy to run up on a beach, and if it becomes accidentally grounded it presents a flat surface instead of a (fiberglass) tri hull. I hope you and Wavey can get south soon as winter is coming soon brrrrrrr. Thank You!

Another nice video. I'm like you, I love to explore the backroads of America, check out the little and small towns, hammocks and villages. The first town you chrcked out still looks to be pretty vibrant to this day. Its obviously not as small as you had first thought. I grew up in Ohio, running the Ohio River. Sadly, many of those old river towns along the Ohio, especially in the upoer reaches as it comes down out of Pittsburgh, they are clearly places in a death spiral. Most of the downtowns are all boarded up. There are abandoned, derelict houses. The ones people still live in don't look much better. Its really sad and depressing. Glad to see that the gloomy weather seemed to be clearing and the sun came back out so you can get the batteries back up to full charge. I'm enjoying living vicariously through your videos of sonethihg I hope to do nyself, get another boat or build one to explore the rivers once I have fully recovered from this cancer I have been fighting. One more chemo treatment and i can begin to rid my body of the poison that is chemo and get my body to heal up from all I've gone through this year. Safe travels and I look forward to you and Wavy's next exploration.
